Can we have an adult conversation about this?
In the 1959 movie, “On the Beach", the government furnished suicide pills to the elite and some others. I've read "Final Exit", and based on what I've read, there is no pill readily available that will provide a quick and painless death.
I'd be pleased to hear from any of you that have been considering this alternative, to a slow and painful life termination from radiation poisoning. I know this subject is morose; but, if you have not considered it, you are living in a dream world.

Don't kill yourself! The ultimate test of strength and humanity may be to endure to the end. I believe we were created with the capacity to rise up and claim dominion of our mind, body and spirit. Our life is what our thoughts make it. When in pain, think thoughts of courage and love. Fill your thoughts with the spiritual power of the word and peace. Give your body healing thoughts!
Do not live life in fear of loss. Live life in hope of gain. When one door closes, another will open.
I remind myself that life is precious…make it a commitment to excellence!

@cisco…
In my opinion such "medications" do indeed exist…
However your questions on alternative are vague; I suppose most people will do what most people do (their pursuit of happiness). Which ever method in which best suites them, in all reality…
However
A slow radiation death is what many of us are facing now, In the broad scope of events, and in addition to the reactors current status's I feel that this event in particular may indeed not pan out as slowly as you may be expecting…
Take reactor 4 for example. If it collapses it will fry all wireless / electronic signals and human life within x miles (likely 40 or more) This will all happen almost immediately… (within a few hours if not days)
Then comes the domino effect, and within weeks of the crisis beginning: The cooling systems to reactors 1, 2, and 3 will all begin to fail… (due to the conditions on site).
Making the common spent fuel pool, the reactors 5 and 6, and also 2 go all fuku… Then we can expect the sfp's of 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6, to dry up within hours of cooling system failure, unleashing its fuel into large amounts of hydrogen and also radioactive peroxides… Which in turn will lead to heat and beta decay, as well as the fuel pools collapse's…
This will be equal to the equivalent of hiroshima with a x 1,000,000 if not 1,000,000,000,000

once the radiation takes flight, killing most of japan, Each and every nuclear site in the continent of japan, will be effected, and share the same fate…
Leading to apocalyptic amounts of radiation all across the globe. (Both hemispheres will be effected)….Then once western nations citizens are effected with severe acute radiation poisoning; the domino effect will lead to multi national, implications at their nuclear facilities…
In all reality, this effect has nothing to do with only reactor 4…
If reactor 1's china syndrome has a hyper criticality, or a tsunami hits, or a eq cracks the number 4 fuel pool, or a random unintended plutonium chain reaction re occurs, or reactor 2's hydrogen level rises, or reactors 5, and 6, have a problem that effect the state of any other reactor…
Or ect ect ect…
Its a dangerous time to be living on planet earth…
Very very very dangerous indeed…

Based on your remarks, I think I made almost all the assumptions you did regarding the big spark (SFP #4) that starts the chain reaction of a radiological firestorm at Fukushima Daiichi. Of course, this is the first domino of approximately 350 other NR’s to follow…53 others in Japan, within months. I don't agree with your 1,000,000 X Hiroshima's’s. Based on my research, I used a more conservative estimate of 1500 X Hiroshima's.
I imagine most geographies being irradiated with radiation in the rain. I only see some geographies receiving airborne radionuclides. I imagine airborne radiation reaching the N&S Korea’s and China.
Beyond the Daiichi radiological firestorm and the ongoing meltdown of the remaining Japanese NR’s, I believe most radionuclide dispersion will be deposited by rain events. The Pacific Ocean will be off gassing thru evaporation (probable airborne radionuclides) and certainly cloud formation, resulting in radioactive rain, too.
I think the ELE will take about 10 years of a very disruptive and painful time to be on planet Earth. There will be geographical clusters of minimally irradiated locales over the 10 year period (I imagined) where people will survive; but, within 10 years, I predict humans will be virtually finished as a species.
We are on the same page; my imagined timeline is just longer than yours.
Unlike you, I believe if you experience acute radiation poisoning, your death will be bloody, painful and…

seriously ugly.

If you are just asking my personal state of action…
I will follow my own pursuit of happiness; the choice of taking such a pill would only exist and be effective if there was a need and a pain…
I doubt the events described will be very painful…
Almost like going to sleep and not waking up…
Maybe a slight bloody nose and head rush…
We will just have to wait and see.

Arclight, for you!
"Kurday in Kazhakstan and Taboshar in Tajikistan were U mining sites operated during the 1950s and 1960s as part of the USSR nuclear weapon program. Today, they represent sources of potential U contamination of the environment. Within both mining sites, open pits from which U ore was extracted have been filled with water due to ground water inflow and precipitation. These artificial pit lakes contain fish consumed occasionally by the local people, and wild and domestic animals are using the water for drinking purposes. To assess the potential impact from U in these pit lakes, field work was performed in 2006 in Kurday and 2006 and 2008 in Taboshar. Results show that the U concentration in the lake waters were relatively high, about 1 mg/L in Kurday Pit Lake and about 3 mg/L in Taboshar Pit Lake. The influence of U-bearing materials on the lakes and downstream waters were investigated by measuring the U concentration and the (234)U/(238)U activity ratios. In both Kurday and Taboshar, the ratios increased distinctively from about 1 at the pit lakes to >1.5 far downstream the lakes. The concentrations of (238)U in gill, liver, muscle and bones in fish from the pit lakes were much higher than in the reference fish. Peak concentration of U was seen in bones (13 mg/kg w.w.), kidney (9.1 mg/kg w.w.) and gills (8.9 mg/kg w.w.) (…)

I have been trying my best to understand this info. The governments know what they have done to us the reason for the silence. Mr. Channin provides an application, (PC only) that works out all the details of a nuclear accident. The big problem I see with this software is that it relys on user/owner input to make it's calculations. I'm sure they have run this thing all over the place with man made/fudged data to get the results they want. The truth be damned. A hand full of morphine will do fine for me.

Converted Bomb Plutonium to Fuel Nuclear Power Plants Under Agreement
TJan 8, 2011witter traffic on the Nuclear Summit
“Nuclear power plants will begin to receive fuel from fissile material from nuclear weapons programs under provisions of an agreement signed at the nuclear summit.
“The United States and Russia agreed to reprocess 34 metric tons of plutonium into fuel for nuclear plants that produce electricity. The combined total of 68 tonnes would produce enough fissile material to make 17,000 bombs.
“The agreement is a protocol of the 2000 Plutonium Management and Disposition Agreement. Both countries plan to begin disposing of their plutonium in 2018, although some facilities were already operating or in the planning stages before the agreement was signed.
“The protocol concentrates on plutonium because that element, unlike weapons-grade uranium, cannot be blended with other materials to be rendered unusable in weapons. But it can be turned into mixed oxide uranium-plutonium (oxide) fuel for nuclear power reactors. The United States will pay Russia $400 million over the next decade to assist with the conversion program.
“Also, during the nuclear summit, the United States said it would begin converting many of its high-enriched uranium reactors to low-enriched uranium status.”

Nuclear Regulatory Commission to meet in Nebraska
June 30, 2012
“OMAHA, Neb. | The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will meet with officials from the Omaha Public Power District in the coming weeks to discuss the agency's oversight of the Fort Calhoun nuclear power plant.
“OPPD operates the plant, located 19 miles north of Omaha.
“The Fort Calhoun plant has been offline since April 2011. It was initially shut down for refueling maintenance, but flooding along the Missouri River and several safety violations forced it to stay closed.
“The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on July 17 in Omaha and will be open to the public. OPPD officials will brief the commission on the status of efforts to prepare the nuclear power plant to restart operations.
“OPPD officials have said they hope to restart the plant in September.”

INEXPLICABLY, RADIATION OVERDOSING CONTINUES IN HOSPITALS
“In 2009, Cedars Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles made headlines when it was revealed that over 260 patients at the hospital had been overdosed in CT Perfusion scans. Patients had received over 5 to 10 times the normal dosage for a period of approximately 18 months. The growth in diagnostic imaging has led to an exponential growth in the average American’s radiation exposure. According to the National Counsel on Radiation Protection and Measurements the average exposure dose is up seven times since 1980. Excess dosage can cause leukemia in children, and cancer in adults. Most of the machines of concern were General Electric and Toshiba. There are no federal standards, guidelines or recommendations with respect to safe levels of radiation dosage….”

Food irradiation uses high-energy Gamma rays, electron beams, or X-rays (all of which are millions of times more powerful than standard medical X-rays) to break apart the bacteria and insects that can hide in meat, grains, and other foods. Radiation can do strange things to food, by creating substances called "unique radiolytic products."
These irradiation byproducts include a variety of mutagens – substances that can cause gene mutations, polyploidy (an abnormal condition in which cells contain more than two sets of chromosomes), chromosome aberrations (often associated with cancerous cells), and dominant lethal mutations (a change in a cell that prevents it from reproducing) in human cells. Making matters worse, many mutagens are also carcinogens.
Irradiation also causes stunted growth in lab animals fed irradiated foods. An important 2001 study linked colon tumor promotion in lab rats to 2-alkylcyclobutanones (2-ACB's), a new chemical compound found only in irradiated foods. The FDA has never tested the safety of these byproducts. Irradiation has also been shown to cause the low-level production of furans (similar to cancer-causing dioxins) in fruit juice.
Report Comment
Irradiation is an after the fact "solution" that does nothing to address the unsanitary conditions of factory farms, and actually creates a disincentive for producers and handlers to take preventative steps in production in handling.
Additionally, irradiation does not work to stop toxins produced by some bacteria (like botulism); viruses, like foot and mouth disease or hepatitis, are resistant to the irradiation doses used in food; and prions (thought to be the cause of BSE, or Mad Cow disease) are resistant as well.

I posted this information because many are not aware of how many foods are regularly irradiated.
I also wanted to question the combination of intentionally irradiated food to being irradiated by airborne & waterborn radiation. What are the health effects?
"In essence, certain government and industry factions have historically coveted food irradiation as a convenient and profitable way to dispose of nuclear waste. At a House Armed Services Committee hearing in 1983 the Department of Energy declared, "The utilization of these radioactive materials simply reduces our waste handling problem."
Report Comment
The original sponsor of food irradiation in the US was the Department of Energy, which wanted to create a favorable image of nuclear power as well as dispose of radioactive waste. These goals have not changed. Cobalt-60, which is used for irradiation, must be manufaactured in a nuclear reactor.
Many foods cannot be irradiated using electron beams. E-beams only penetrate 1-1.5 inches on each side, and are suitable only for flat, evenly sized foods like patties. Large fruits, foods in boxes, and irregularly shaped foods must be irradiated using x-rays or gamma rays from nuclear materials.
Rats and mice fed diets containing freshly irradiated wheat showed increased levels of polyploid cells [cells with chromosome abnormalities] in their bone marrow. This was repeatedly observed in several separate experiments.
Normal monkeys and undernourished children fed diets containing freshly irradiated wheat showed elevated levels of polyploid [abnormal] cells in circulating lymphocytes [white blood cells]. Several months after the irradiated wheat was withdrawn, levels of polyploidy returned to normal.
Mice fed freshly irradiated wheat-based diets showed evidence of dominant lethal mutation as indicated by increased numbers of intrauterine [prenatal] deaths.

When hearings & research is done on how to handle Nuclear waste….this use of it is never brought into the equation….we know why…but then ask Why is there no *Official plans on handling the waste?…becasue the Nuclear waste is already being handled!!!!
It is being used as fertilizers & irradiation as well as Nuclear weapons & to power Nuclear plants & for treating cancers.
So these uses of Nuclear waste must be considered when looking at shutting down Nukes. We must also consider the billions made by reusing the wastes. As well as the additional health effects.

BE AWARE..most of the fruits or vegetables that you buy in the grocery store that are irradiated. Including those bought from Asia and the Pacific and the North and South America regions.
"With a view to harmonizing standards in irradiation worldwide, the IAEA is also collaborating closely with the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) in the completion of Guidelines for the Use of Irradiation as a Phytosanitary Measure, including irradiation treatment for specific insect pests such as fruit flies, to meet increasingly rigorous quarantine requirements. Limited international trade in several varieties of irradiation treated fruit has now commenced in both Asia and the Pacific and the North and South America regions.
The long term goals of the Subprogramme include the strengthening of the national capacities of FAO/IAEA Member States in applying irradiation as a phytosanitary treatment to control insect pests in exported fruits and vegetables."
So PLEASE buy from your local growers & or Farmers market. We must not let them radiate ourselves or our children. The costs of irradiated food is also more expensive becasue of the process. So lets break them. STOP buying store bought fruits & vegetables. Buy only in season. Take a drive on a Sunday & stop at the roadside farmers stand & buy fresh. Avoid foods that are out of season where you live.

Genocide and Crimes Against Humanity
Article IV of the United Nations (UN) Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (1948) states: "Persons committing genocide . . . shall be punished, whether they are constitutionally responsible rulers, public officials, or private individuals." Article 7 of the International Law Commission's (ILC's) Draft Code of Crimes Against the Peace and Security of Mankind (1996) states: "The official position of an individual who commits a crime against the peace and security of mankind, even if he acted as head of State or Government, does not relieve him of criminal responsibility or mitigate punishment." These and other authoritative sources clearly indicate that individuals committing crimes against humanity or acts of genocide are individually responsible for them. Even heads of State, when they commit, authorize, attempt, incite, or conspire to commit acts of genocide or crimes against humanity, are personally liable for their actions, their official positions notwithstanding.

In particular, official capacity as a Head of State or Government, a member of a Government or parliament, an elected representative or a government official shall in no case exempt a person from criminal responsibility under this Statute, nor shall it, in and of itself, constitute a ground for reduction of sentence.

Just an FYI for those who didn't know. Enenews (last year) featured an article on radioactive tissue boxes from China being sold at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. The boxes were found to be highly radioactive, and were seized, and banned from sale.
I spoke with the agent from the California Dept. of Health who did the testing. He was testing some ceramic water vessels I had which showed signs of having radioactive contamination. (The water vessels, I was told, had contamination levels which were not of concern.)
He told me he was the agent who went to B, B & Y and conducted the tests.
What was found, he said, was a high level of contamination from Cobalt 60.
So we'll pull the products when it shows up in consumer products you may come in contact with a few times per average day, but we'll use it (Cobalt 60) to irradiate your food, which you ingest.
As Mr. Spock would say, "This is not logical."

Google urges governments to share disaster data

"Roughly 430 participants gathered for the first "Big Tent" in Asia, held in this northern city, which was badly hit by the deadly earthquake and tsunami in March 2011.
"We are still seeing quite a few governments globally who are quite closed with their data. If we could have… greater access to that data, I think we could do even more amazing things," Whetstone said.
Tokyo was criticised for not publishing data it had as reactors at Fukushima went into meltdown, spreading radiation over a large area and forcing tens of thousands of people from their homes.
Public officials have said they were worried about sowing panic with information that was not readily understandable.
Engineers at the Google event also complained how Japan initially released radiation contamination data in PDF format, making it difficult for scientists around the world to easily edit and analyse them.
The global rush to access the data also caused the science ministry's servers to crash, prompting private IT firms and academics to scramble to help disseminate the data in easy-to-use formats with English translations."

Gerald Holtom, a British graphic designer, came up with the peace sign design in 1958 to be used at a protest against nuclear weapons. It's actually a kind of double entendre: People have adopted one interpretation of the symbol, two superimposed semaphore letters — N and D — which were meant to stand for "nuclear disarmament."

The Nuclear Industry and Venting, Round 2
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has required that certain boiling water reactors in the United States that lack vents should install them by the end of 2016. This delay was granted because much of the work must be done while the reactors are shut down for an extended period, something that generally happens once a year or even less often.
This has raised another question: should the vents be filtered? American plants that currently have vents do not have filters. The thinking is that the initial puff of gas does not contain much radioactive material in the first place.
But the commission recently instructed its staff to study the question of filters, which would probably take the form of beds of sand through which the gas would be bubbled.

"The organizer says that the children will not go to heavily contaminated area. Well, Tokyo has many hotspots already. Also, water is only checked for cesium, not for tritium or other 100s of isotopes. Food labels are faked because they have to sell Fukushima rice, veg, fruits, meats and fish so people will buy the stuff thinking it’s not from Fukushima but they are conned to eat it. In Japan, children are used as guinea pigs. There is a currently human experiment going on e.g. children are asked to carry a glass badge to measure how much radiation they are exposed to but not to treat them. In fact, if anyone goes to hospital and ask for screening or treatment for radiation, they are refused. You don’t know all of this unless you are following closely what’s happening with locals. I don’t want 100s of more children to die, which would cause misery to 1000s of their parents, family and friends. Michael wanted to save children and this is my part to follow it. He’s even informed us by embedding the message/names in the song Money…"

FYI: Got a birds eye view of the radioactive haze today driving southwest from Joplin 600 miles diagonally across Oklahoma and into west Texas. Tollway roads give a good longrange view of the lower atmosphere.
Unlike three months ago when the radioactive haze was solid from Oklahoma City to west Texas, today it was much further north of Tulsa and then dramatically cleared a few miles south of Oklahoma City. There was some lowlying haze in west Texas, but the air inversion stagnant masses were not as bad as in months past.
The faster jetstream has moved very far north. I witnessed it today.

"In dispraise of Integral Fast Nuclear Reactors"
"The nuclear lobby seems to get quite irate when some amateur comes along and criticises their latest gimmicks. They sure revel with delight if some non-technical peasant should make any mistake, however small, in using the approved language of nuclear terminology. It’s really like the Catholic Church in earlier days, when they had all their dogmas and liturgy in Latin, so that the people just had to believe it all, with no explanation available in the vulgar tongue."
http://www.independentaustralia.net/2012/environment/in-dispraise-of-integral-fast-nuclear-reactors/
"David Biello from the Scientific American comments:
‘Ultimately, however, the core problem may be that such new reactors don’t eliminate the nuclear waste that has piled up, so much as transmute it. Even with a fleet of such fast reactors, nations would nonetheless require an ultimate home for radioactive waste, one reason that a 2010 M.I.T. report on spent nuclear fuel dismissed such fast reactors.’"

[.'The TEPCO Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant accident was the result of collusion between the government, the regulators and TEPCO, and the lack of governance by said parties.'
[.The news renewed doubts about the plant's stability and provoked fears the other two reactors that had meltdowns could be in even worse shape.

I'm a bit irate at Max's comment about me confusing the story.
Here is the deal.
There is very little systematic review of the accumulating data/ evidence that goes on here.
That is a function of the never ending stream of information coming over a long period of time, spread out over numerous threads.
I have spent considerable effort as have some other posters here tying to test current claims made by Tepco and the media against older claims made by the same and other sources.
That is called analysis.
I don't like being called out for engaging in that activity.
I've found that others so engage in it also are occasionally criticized for the practice of re-introducing older information into new discussion threads (e.g., Heart has been criticized for this I believe).
I will stop wasting me time.

Sorry for sounding pouty but I feel that we are being led around by our noses by carefully packaged bits of information.
We talk to ourselves, and yet nothing happens.
Japan re-starts reactors and the NRC writes up a bogus whitewash of a "lessons" report. The US goes on using radiological weapons in the Middle East.
At least the Japanese are protesting. Good for them. I like to see mamas, and papas, and grandparents out there trying to protect their children…
In the US, Canada, UK, Australia, etc, we cannot seem to get enough people around us involved.
Letters to our elected officials are politely ignored or totally disregarded.
And we start policing ourselves so that we can agree on some basic facts when even those are highly suspect.
It is a fricking nightmare. It is like Tim Burton's worst dystopic nightmare.
Even in On the Beach people were widely aware and the government responsive.
I've already stated that I personally don't think its an ELE (at least, not in the short term) but I do think it will kill millions and millions of people and we cannot even get the public to pay attention…
I think the people in the radiation discussion forum are doing us a great service. Maybe we can bring those numbers to the attention of those around us….

As you already know, the only way we can learn is to bounce things off of each other, and to investigate. Sometimes we are right, sometimes we aren't. Most of us are learning about something that is horrendous.
You are one of the people who are looking for the truth, this is not an easy task. There is nothing easy about this disaster.

I have been doing a lot of research today on the 2011 earthquake and resulting tsunami (actually there were seven tsunami waves in varying height at Fukushima). As many Enenewsers know there has been a preponderance of blame by the nuclear industry and mass media on the water damage versus the earthquake damage.
While I do think the earthquake alone could have created meltdowns alone we may not have clear evidence of this for hundreds of years as the buildings will be too hot for onsite research.
On the other hand it is undeniable the tsunamis created a rapid path to disaster. Their damages brought the plant inexorably to the nightmare still continuing at Fukushima nearly 16 months later.
Tepco made many safety decisions culminating in the tsunamis at Daiichi being a suicide bullet to the brain of the massive complex.
Take for example the inane decision to install the electronic switching gear and backup batteries in the low lying turbine buildings along with the EDGs (Emergency Diesel Generators). Within 10 hours the loss of batteries for Units 1 and 2 guaranteed they would blow up. The loss of backup DC power was a nail in the coffin for all of Japan. Units 1 and 2 had absolutely no battery backup from the first hour,
The lack of heavy equipment like bulldozers to remove impediments on the plant grounds left by the giant wave meant it was very difficult to transport fire engines by the early responders was a bad mistake.
Report Comment
The sad thing is Tepco had been warned a huge tsunami was possible from historical research and yet dismissed those scientists since obviously nobody can pinpoint when the BIG one will hit in a millennia:
http://forum.gloresis.com/2011/09/24/fukushima-the-myth-of-safety-the-reality-of-geosci/
Yet with a toxic fuel that requires safekeeping for 250 millennia…why not require the safety features be in place to meet the certain future natural disasters? The answer is money.
Modern societies are based on capitalist profits for a few and socialist bailouts for them when they fail. They never lose.

Hi all,
I just put some time into an essay for my blog, and finally got it to say what I wanted it to say. I hope you will all read it and find it to your liking.
Essay: The design basis and collusion
"In a regime of captive regulation of nuclear power, safety engineering is insufficient to prevent 99.5% of failures."
http://geoharvey.wordpress.com/design-basis-events-and-collusion/
(By the way, that 99.5% is the result of a calculation, not exaggeration.)
Report Comment
I used to work with a top flight civil engineer on hydraulics projects. When analysis is being done for a public works project such as bridge footing, a good engineer will analyze data like 50, 100, 300, and 1,000 year flood events. Then the numbers are crunched according to the planning scenarios they develop, to develop the design basis for the project.
I'm not an engineer, but having done a job supporting one who coordinated projects for a large geographic area, I got some good exposure to the civil engineering planning and design process. I was the "grunt" whose job it was to find the historical data.
There is just no excuse for the way the plants at Fukushima were designed. There is plenty of historical data on earthquakes and huge tsunamis there.
GeoHarvey, I haven't read your article in its entirety yet. I do appreciate your analysis of the design basis of the plants.
I'm getting the impression the nuclear industry just threw out solid engineering and design practice in its rush to build its projects. They have done things no one in their right mind (or who should truly call himself/herself and engineer or designer) would do.
Report Comment
The flood event data thing was an illustration of the kinds of design considerations plant designers and engineers should be looking at. Not necessarily pertinent to nuclear plant design.
Report Comment
I've really oversimplified the description of what an engineer does when developing scenarios to develop a plan and design. It's a very, very complicated process and follows a very strict methodology. Just rest assured they will take into account the worst possible scenario when considering what the bridge, plant, etc. will be subjected to ….
A responsible planner/engineer/designed will spare no effort in securing and reviewing the best and most accurate historical data available. The time horizon will go back as far as possible, if adequate and sound data/documentation is available.
We had somewhere here in the past year (pro nuke) stating there was no way to predict the size of the tsunami which swamped Fukushima 1. That is pure and utter hogwash.
Report Comment
Ah, yes, I can just hear the designers' rationalizations …. There isn't a record of such a large quake in this (partcular) area in Japan. A tsunami exceeding the design basis we're going with hasn't occurred here in X years, etc. And they threw out or ignored the rest of the data from which it could be extrapolated a gigantic quake or tsunami could happen in the area where they sited the plant.
When it's pretty obvious gigantic earthquakes and tsunamis have occurred all over Japan, in the past.
Doh!
Report Comment
Hey, AfterShock, can I be part of that prosecution team?

GeoHarvey, I have a question for you.
"The report is not based on estimates, but on empirical data. Its calculation considers the number of reactor years accumulated and the number of core damage events that have happened. Worldwide, nuclear reactors have accumulated about 14,500 reactor years, and produced four catastrophic meltdowns. This means the actual likelihood of a catastrophic core damage event is about 1/3625. For all core damage events, including those that are not catastrophic, the frequency is about 1/1210 for all reactor types, and about 1/635 for older reactors."
Would you please clarify what timeframe is covered in those probabilities? Is that over the lifespan of a plant? Is it defined as 20 years, 40 years, etc., or does it depend upon the type of plant being reviewed in this analysis?
How do researchers at the Max Planck Institute arrive at these numbers?

Polar Bears & Seals
Has there been any results on radiation testing to the polar bears & seals that had what looked like radiation sickness?
Just wondering if I missed it.
Would like to know for event I am participating in to bring awareness to nuke issues this coming Wed.
Thanks!

There were news articles late last winter saying the cause was not radiation, but I have seen nothing since. I found the articles rather unconvincing.

Did you look at the posting I made just before yours? Perhaps that could help you.

This is the latest info. I have been able to find dated June 25, 2012.
These seals were found a long enough time ago that results should be available by now.

What is the new date for release of University of Alaska Fairbanks radiation testing results?
Muscle and liver samples from sick and healthy seals were collected in 2011 and 2012 for radionuclide analysis, specifically cesium 134/137. All the muscle samples had to undergo an extensive four week freeze-drying process in preparation for analysis and are currently being analyzed. Preliminary analysis of control samples from healthy seals has been completed and composite tissue samples from diseased seal samples are undergoing analysis. As soon as final results are available they will be provided.

GeoHarvey, I posted this comment at your blogspot -
Good analysis.
Here's another sort of analysis–when pondering how it can be possible for human beings to make decisions that seem to fly in the face of common sense & science both–that place at risk the survival of an eco-environment on earth capable of sustaining life–I realized that those in power in industry & government see themselves in a sort of competition with other wealth-at-any-cost seekers – a competition to ‘get there first’–to nail down the sweet ‘taxpayer funded for private profit’ deals before the competition beats them to the punch.
By their analysis, it is a race for the bucks – a race that will NOT be won by any who are held back by moral or even practical/pragmatic scruples, such as concerns for the viability of the biosphere or for the survival of our posterity/the human race.
As they (correctly) analyze it, even if they personally are constrained by reasonable concerns for the safety of the people & the survival of the biosphere – well, that does not mean/guarantee that OTHER competitors will be similarly constrained – it just means that they themselves have bowed out of that particular race-for-riches – have voluntarily disqualified themselves – thrown in the towel, so to speak.
Even if THEY voluntarily act responsibly & prudently, other ‘movers & shakers’ probably will not. Therefore, why should they voluntarily put themselves under any such 'reasonable' constraints?

Yes.
The underlying system we use for business and government is self-destructive. And it will take the rest of humanity down with it.

Yes, that is what I see happening – actually, happening 'right before our very eyes' so to speak.
Also primates like chimps – and most 'primitive' human societies – fight with each other for territories. This behavior is 'hard-wired' into our species. Now that humans have nuclear weapons, we have the power to destroy that which sustains us – this living planet – and seem to be in the process of doing just that.
