No Proof of Serious Quake Damage at Fukushima:Government Panel -Nikkei
TOKYO (Nikkei)–The government committee investigating the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster will report that it has found no evidence of earthquake damage to vital plant equipment, contradicting a strongly argued claim by a parliamentary commission, the Nikkei reports in its Monday morning edition.
The Investigation Committee, headed by University of Tokyo Professor Emeritus Yotaro Hatamura, will issue a final report July 23. It has interviewed workers at the stricken power plant and examined reactor data from the early hours of the crisis that began March 11, 2011, when a massive earthquake struck northeastern Japan.
So far, the committee sees no sign of damage to major plant systems before the ensuing tsunami, although the report will not make a definitive conclusion, since no on-site examination was possible.(we just checked the ouija board)

3% is owned by IHI
That should leave Toshiba 39% instead of 49% mentioned in the news.

I have a question I would like some of you to answer. I have noticed this year a drastic reduction in the number of earth worms around my home in Blaine MN. USA. We have had plenty of rain and usualy after it rains the driveway and street have many many dozens of worms crawling around. This year I have made an effort to go out after it rains and have seen a grand total of 2, yes, TWO earth worms this year. I have also noticed far fewer bugs in general around my house. Anyone else noticing anything similar? Thanks.

Have you asked this question on a local gardening blog?
You can also call you county extension service to see what they have to say and ask for the contact info of the local county master gardener (if you have such a program in MN) to get their opinion.
Local farmers at the farmers' market may have some info too.

SPS sez… Where are the earthworms?
SP: Sleeping with the fishes (bluefin tuna). In other words… Radiation hits worms in the soil worse than shellfish. That's why the birds are croaking.
http://www.sott.net/articles/show/229523-US-Earthworm-Plague-Sweeps-Cincinnati
This worm death plague in a three state grid three months after 311 came after nearly a month of daily rain. How do you spell H-o-t-s-p-o-t?
If researchers looked here at the soil I think they will find ten times the radiation they found in San Francisco.
BTW… The original MSN article about the Ohio worms was removed. Coincidence? I think not.
Also BTW regarding my comments yesterday about about the muttonbirds from New Zealand (estimated population 22 million prior to last years annual trek to Fukushima. Over 7 million failed to return to New Zealand where they breed.
"Recent tagging experiments have shown that birds breeding in New Zealand may travel 74,000 km in a year, reaching Japan, Alaska and California, averaging more than 500 km per day."
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sooty_Shearwater#section_3
SP: The birds rested near Fukushima NPP in late 2011 and were feeding on squid, small fish, and shellfish. I am surprised the New Zealand scientists haven't tested some of the 15 million that made it back in the spring. Maybe they have, but publishing radiation bad news about food sources for the Maori may not be possible in Kiwi land. I thought they are pretty anti-nuke in NZ…

Last year, they were much reduced. This year, there haven't been any crickets at all.

Crickets have played a strong role throughout Chinese, Japanese and Native American cultures as a symbol of good fortune, vitality and prosperity.

2 StPaulScout re: insects and worms. I'm in San Francisco Bay Area. Yes, there are far fewer worms and insects here than pre-311. Many, many more dead worms at all times of the year than last year. This year they seem to be crawling out of the soil and dying, even during warm weather. It's like they are trying to escape from something in the soil. I've never seen them emerge from cool, damp soil during hot weather, before.

EPA Notice because ""This is a great step toward reducing risk to the Columbia River." HAH! There is a whole BASIN worth of contamination..
BUT by law EPA has to notify community(s) if risk is expected..or possible contamination at certain levels where the contaminates are carried thru..Or so I understand it. Others with environmental law background chime in here..
"..to remove the rest of the sludge from the basin by the end of 2015, the agency said. "This sludge has been stored underwater in the basin for more than 30 years, and today marks a turning point in our cleanup," said Matt McCormick, manager of the Richland Operations Office, in a statement."
So guess this announcement will cover multiple years(2012 thru 2015)???

Finland starts uranium mining:
"On 1 March, the Government granted permission to Helsinki Talvivaara mining and processing of uranium.
Environment Minister and his Niinistö Greens were overruled by the cabinet members of a conservative-liberal coalition majority. Euratom has given the green light, but environmentalists are trying to stop the uranium project still in court and using petitions.
With an estimated annual production of 350-500 tons of uranium Talvivaara would in fact be Europe's largest uranium mine. And this, without having been discussed in principle in Finland ever, whether the country should ever become a uranium producer.
The nuclear and uranium lobby has used the back door. "Entirely surprising" they found that the nickel ore mined in Talvivaara contains such a high percentage of uranium that is worth obtaining, said the operator Society 2010.
In fact, back in the 1970s the local uranium deposits have been mapped by geologists and appeared in 1981 in the IAEA and OECD statistics. With the Canadian Cameco there is already a willing provider who wants to process the raw material for use in nuclear fuel rods. Talvivaara and could soon be everywhere in Northern Finland: a veritable patchwork of mineable quantities spread out over Finnish Lapland."

Doing a little backtracking tonight on the May 2012 report on radiation dose estimation by the WHO (who as we know when it comes to any nuclear health issues they turn into the little bastard step-children for the nuclear cabal).
Of interest to me was not the brouhaha prior to final publishing over their initial high rates of contamination of infants which they lowered after the Japanese government complained and provided new cooked books of fresh "data" (fake shit of course), but the nuggets of information about a couple of things.
Aussies and other On the Beach southern hemisphere folks will be interested in page 42 about the estimated percentage of fallout from Japan crossing the barrier into the lower globe (15%) and when exactly they first discovered Fukushima radiation in the lower countries (April 2011).
On page 43 read how sloppy their research was on tap water. Just atrocious for such a prestigious bunch of nuclear eggheads to whitewash and dismiss the dangers completely.
Some of these scientists are the same bastards who traveled to Belarus 26 years after Chernobyl and avoided visiting the hot spots, brought their own food and water, and then proclaimed all was well, the area was so much better, no medical problems. These naked apes have the compassion of a serial killer.

3 more DPJ members to quit as nuclear power issue fractures party further
House of Councillors members, from left, Yasue Funayama, Kuniko Tanioka and Kuniko Koda speak to reporters at a news conference in Tokyo on July 17. (Mainichi)
拡大写真
Three more sitting Diet members of the ruling Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) have announced they are leaving the party, not over the consumption tax hike bill that led to the defection of former leader Ichiro Ozawa and his followers, but over the government's decision to restart nuclear reactors.
"If the administration of Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda says it will take responsibility for the restarts, then we want the government to take responsibility for stabilizing the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant reactors as well," said House of Councillors member Kuniko Tanioka at a July 17 news conference. "The administration's use of the word 'responsibility' is altogether too flippant."
The departure of Tanioka and fellow upper house members Yasue Funayama and Kuniko Koda points to smoldering differences within the DPJ not just over the tax hike bills passed by the House of Representatives against stiff opposition from the Ozawa camp, but over the issue of nuclear power in Japan.

The plant had an 11-day automatic stoppage in March.
EDF said it was not predicting when the plant would begin generating again.
The company said the March shutdown had been the first automatic one in three years and was for an electrical fault in the non-nuclear side of the plant.
There was a controlled stoppage in May to fix a lubrication problem.
EDF Energy said Sizewell B produced enough electricity for two million homes, or about 3% the UK's electricity needs

And if anyone's wondering if it's really all GE-Hitachi that carries the larger blame for industrial nuclear crimes.
One word, patents…
(Reuters) – General Electric Co on Friday reported a 2.5 percent rise in profit from continuing operations, topping Wall Street expectations, as solid demand in the United States and emerging markets offset weakness in Europe.
The largest U.S. conglomerate by revenue stuck with its forecast for the rest of 2012, saying it would increase earnings at a double-digit percentage rate by pushing profit margins higher.

“The U.S. Department of Energy has testified that there is no level of radiation that is so low that it is without health risks,” Jacqueline Cabasso, the Executive Director of the Western States Legal Foundation, told Al Jazeera.
Cabasso explained that natural background radiation exists, “But more than 2,000 nuclear tests have enhanced this background radiation level, so we are already living in an artificially radiated environment due to all the nuclear tests.”
“Karl Morgan, who worked on the Manhattan project, later came out against the nuclear industry when he understood the danger of low levels of ionizing radiation-and he said there is no safe dose of radiation exposure,” Cabasso continued, “That means all this talk about what a worker or the public can withstand on a yearly basis is bogus. There is no safe level of radiation exposure. These so-called safe levels are coming from within the nuclear establishment.”
Report Comment
Gofman and Tamplin documented that low levels of radiation can cause cancer and other diseases, and they argued that federal safety guidelines for low-level exposures should be reduced by 90 percent.
A military briefing written by the U.S. Army for commanders in Iraq states:
Hazards from low level radiation are long-term, not acute effects… Every exposure increases risk of cancer.
~You & I are the acceptable risk, Army commanders & those that think they are better do NOT take that acceptable risk.~
That the radiation is being released 5,000 miles away isn’t as comforting as it seems…. Every day, the jet stream carries pollution from Asian smoke stacks and dust from the Gobi Desert to our West Coast, contributing 10 to 60 percent of the total pollution breathed by Californians, depending on the time of year. Mercury is probably the second most toxic substance known after plutonium. Half the mercury in the atmosphere over the entire US originates in China. It, too, is 5,000 miles away. A week after a nuclear weapons test in China, iodine 131 could be detected in the thyroid glands of deer in Colorado, although it could not be detected in the air or in nearby vegetation.

The Endocrine Society, 14,000 researchers and medical specialists in more than 100 countries, warned that “even infinitesimally low levels of exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals, indeed, any level of exposure at all, may cause endocrine or reproductive abnormalities, particularly if exposure occurs during a critical developmental window.
Surprisingly, low doses may even exert more potent effects than higher doses.” If hormone-mimicking chemicals at any level are not safe for a fetus, then the concept is likely to be equally true of the even more intensely toxic radioactive elements drifting over from Japan, some of which may also act as endocrine disruptors.

Ionizing radiation includes beta particles, alpha particles, gamma rays, and x-rays;
Beta particles are electrons — but they differ from the ordinary non-beta electrons in the human body in one important way. Beta particles are endowed with biologically unnatural energy. This energy causes them to travel through the cell (and beyond) at high speed, like tiny bullets.
The biological damage caused by ionizing radiation, including gamma rays and x-rays, is due to high-speed particles traveling through cells and unloading concentrated amounts of energy in unnatural places at random. Each particle creates a very narrow path of disturbance (called a primary "ionization track") as it unloads energy at irregular intervals.
Conclusion: It is factually wrong to believe or to claim that no harm has ever been proven from very low-dose radiation. On the contrary. Existing human evidence shows cancer-induction by radiation at and near the lowest possible dose and dose-rate with respect to cell-nuclei. By any reasonable standard of scientific proof, such evidence demonstrates that there is no safe dose or dose-rate below which dangers disappear. No threshold-dose. Serious, lethal effects from minimal radiation doses are not "hypothetical," "just theoretical," or "imaginary." They are real.

George Yoshitake, Nuclear Test Photographer, Recalls Filming Nuclear Blast 55 Years Ago (VIDEO)
The Huffington Post | By Timothy Stenovec Posted: 07/20/2012 9:37 am Updated: 07/21/2012 4:37 pm
****When the countdown reaches zero, one of the jets releases a missile tipped with a nuclear warhead.
"We felt a heat pulse," a narrator says. "A very bright light — a fireball. It is red. The sky looks black about it. It is boiling above us…"****
****It wasn't until after the test that Yoshitake found out he was making a propaganda film meant to demonstrate the safety of nuclear explosions.
"It was a publicity stunt to show the American public how safe it was during an atomic bomb," Yoshitake told CBS, "and if there was a war or something, with atomic bombs going off, that it was going to be safe for the general public."****
****Yoshitake said that of the six who were there that day, only he and Luttrell are still alive.
All of them were diagnosed with cancer at one time or another, CBS reports, although Yoshitake said that after chemotherapy and surgery last year for stomach cancer, he's now healthy.
Yoshitake said he knows a lot of cameramen who filmed nuclear tests died of cancer, adding that he's not certain it was related to the blasts.****

Suffice it to say there are many incidences that can relate the development of cancer to much earlier exposures to radiation. But still no "proof." The Atomic Energy Commission and subsequent Nuclear Regulatory Commission have done their jobs well. In reality, you can't prove the cancer isn't related, and you can't prove it is. All you know, is that radiation can and does cause cancer. And per John Gofman, PhD, MD, all cancers are due to radiation. That would include natural and man-made forms of radiation.

This is made ever more complex because a person's cancer could be caused by past radiation damage to their grandparents' germ line cells…
Maybe we've already accumulated enough genetic damage to make reproduction impossible in future generations…
I'm fascinated by genetic mosaicism…

Majia, have been wondering if radiation works in the human body in any manner similar to how GMO's impact the genetic material of human beings. Am thinking on an energetic level, wondering if there is any similarity. That is, a GMO can trigger the DNA in the body to make the cells start producing pesticides. GMO's literally change the manner by which the DNA tells the cells to do their jobs.
I wonder if the information traveling between cells/DNA about radiation in the body (and causing the body to literally damage itself in a distant area) is similar to how cells communicate about the "instructions" given by GMO gene splice material.
Am not sure how to articulate my thought process. Would you please suggest some reading on the Mosaic Effect? Thanks.

Nuclear event in New Jersey USA on Tuesday, 24 July, 2012 at 03:05 (03:05 AM) UTC.
Description
The Oyster Creek nuclear plant in Lacey Township was shut down early today after a power failure, according to plant owner Exelon. Electrical service from the outside grid was disrupted at around 3:41 a.m., and the plant’s emergency diesel generators kicked in and powered the plant’s safety systems, said a statement from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The problem appeared to be a grounded 230-kilovolt line, according to the NRC. Jersey Central Power & Light crews fixed the problem a little after 5:30 a.m., Exelon said. Afterwards the plant was taken to cold shutdown, in which the reactor and associated systems are cooled down and depressurized, according to the NRC. The plant will likely start up again in a matter of days, said Exelon spokeswoman Suzanne D’Ambrosio. “We make sure the plant is shut down and cooled down and then if there’s any little maintenance we need to do we may take advantage of down time to do that,” D’Ambrosio said. “Obviously with the hot summer it’s in our best interest to get running as soon as possible, but it’s a very slow and deliberate process.” Oyster Creek produces 636 megawatts of electricity at full power, enough electricity for about 600,000 homes.

So does this sort of unexpected shut down typically result in the dumping of (tritium-laden) steam?

Soaring costs for new nuclear power leave UK govt with a dilemma
"..Strike price key to new nuclear plants FT.com By Guy Chazan and Rebecca Bream, 23 July 12, When the Blair government first backed the idea of a new generation of nuclear plants in 2007, energy companies insisted they could build them without any public subsidy. Five years later, that claim seems painfully naive.
In the intervening years, the cost of new reactors has risen so fast that constructing them without any government support has become unthinkable.
The evidence for this change is not hard to find. The first two new reactors to be built in Europe for decades, at Flamanville in France and Olkiluoto in Finland, have suffered repeated delays and ballooning costs, with safety changes in the wake of the Fukushima disaster in Japan a key factor. Flamanville’s pricetag is almost double its original budget of €3.3bn and it is four years behind schedule…"

Am considering talking with people representing sister cities in Japan. Nirasaki, Chubu is my cities' sister city. Am thinking partnering with someone there might be a good means of finding out how their area has been affected by the earthquake tsunami (indirectly), and Fukushima. Nirasaki appears to be southeast of Tokyo, so it's some distance from Fukushima and possibly Tokyo contamination.
Would like to know if people as far away as Nirasaki have been impacted by the Fukushima accident.
Just an idea I'd like to float out there for anyone who might be interested in partnering with someone through the Sister Cities program.

Another idea: FUNDRAISERS to aid Fukushima children, and help provide much needed medical care to those impacted by the Fukushima accident. This is an incipient idea, just in beginning stages.
Will post more details at "Political Events" area in Forum.
Have some ideas and met with one of the owners of Dharma Trading Co. of San Rafael, Calif. yesterday. He'll work with any groups interested in doing fundraisers. Dharma Trading imports beautiful, high quality T-Shirts, scarves, and a full line of high quality, non-toxic dyes and artist's supplies.
Idea: have T-shirt design workshops or parties in local areas. Teach people to do tie dye and special dying techniques for a small fee. They design the T-shirts and can take them home. (They're beautiful when done.)
Or have Ikat dying workshops taught by a Japanese person. Part of fees for classes to go to Fukushima relief fund.
Issues: organization, communication, liaisoning between Japanese persons in U.S., suppliers like Dharma Trading, finding trustworthy persons to distribute the money in Japan and handle trust fund accounts. Developing teams to put on workshops on the ground. Accountability of all participants in handling monies, and representing the concept of Fundraiser events properly, i.e., what do we want to communicate? Why are we educating? Agreement of all participants on desired outcome of Funraisers.

FUNRAISERS — Freudian slip? FUNDRAISERS. Would really enjoy being on the ground to do S.F. Bay Area fundraisers. Also have experience coordinating teams. Would like to help facilitate a "master plan" of some sort (flexible of course) so we can begin doing fundraisers in our local community.
For me, it's logical to begin with T-Shirt design parties and classes. Probably a good idea to have a speaker explain at some point why the class and fundraiser are being done, or have literature at a table there.
Also have a cousin in Denver who has had a T-Shirt design company for over 30 years. He might be able to facilitate printing of Fukushima T-Shirts for sale.
Would need lots and lots of help to get these things going. Would just like to float this as an idea to see if anyone is interested. For me, San Francisco, S.F. East Bay, Sonoma County, Napa County, and even Sacramento area are logical participants.
San Francisco has a large "Japan Town" and Japanese Cultural Center. Perhaps we here in Calif. could partner with them.
Please write to me at HoTaters@hush.com to discuss ideas. Am thinking we need to find a 503c organization (or organizations) or that kind of counterpart organization in Japan. Lots of "logistical" and organizational details to work out. But am thinking this is a great grassroots way we can have fun, educate people, and provide financial relief to people in Japan.
Your ideas please?

BTW, what ideas do you have out there for Fukushima T-Shirts?
Please send them to HoTaters@hush.com if you're willing to share your ideas for the common good.
Any graphic designers and artists? I know you're lurking out there! At least one of us is an artist. I'm a painter, graphics, block printing, fiber arts, and music type (aside from the other worldly work things I've done).
Ready to move forward with making a positive change here, and supporting the people in Japan. Pls. let me know if you think we need to partner with others, so we're not "re-inventing the wheel" every time we do something.
Report Comment
Request: please contact me re: interest in Dharma Trading Co. so that we can coordinate this, and not swamp them with too many requests right away.
HoTaters@hush.com Put something in the subject line identifying why you are writing to me, thanks.
The idea is to make a coordinated effort. Better to have one person as the point of contact with them, at first. Not that I want to run things, but until we decide who is the "front person" and point of contact for liaison with Dharma Trading, please let me work with them directly on our behalf.
Dharma Trading will provide support in helping to organize the fundraisers (i.e., the methods groups have using working with them in the past). And they'll coordinate in supplies, etc. Nice group of people.

OK, over to "Upcoming Meetings, Political Activities" area of Forum with this. Just wanted to let people know I'm starting to work on this, and see if there is interest. Or please tell me if you're already doing something like this.
Thanks, HoTaters, and hope you all have a blessed day.
