Title: No big Fukushima health impact seen: U.N. body chairman
Source: Reuters
Date: Feb 1, 2012
The fact that some radioactive releases spread over the ocean instead of populated areas also contributed to limiting the consequences, said Wolfgang Weiss of the U.N. Scientific Committee on the effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR).
“As far as the doses we have seen from the screening of the population … they are very low,” Weiss told Reuters. This was partly “due to the rapid evacuation and this worked very well.” [...]
Title: Nuclear accidents pose little risk to health: NRC
Source: Reuters
Date: Jan 31, 2012
The risk to public health from a severe nuclear power plant accident in the United States is “very small” because reactor operators should have time to prevent core damage and reduce the release of radioactive materials, U.S. nuclear regulators said in a study on Wednesday. [...]

[...] The long term goal of TEPCO and the Japanese government at this stage in the game is to ensure that the public is safe and that the areas around Fukushima are cleaned of contamination and made safe for future public use. [...]

ChasAha – I don't know about 'formal legality', but this authoritative, calm, reassurance is criminally negligent to me
"if you need to wash your livestock – wearing clothing used when handling pesticides would be a good choice" should fire off a mental alarm for the farmer, but those who have made a habit of using pesticides will interpret the risks similarly. (In my experience they dismiss pesticide dangers, especially cumulative and long-term. They remind me that "the instructions say it's safe if used properly."
"wind can carry it to where it's less harmful" – suggests it's OK if the neighbors or next county takes the hit!
"Understatement" prevails from start to finish of this document. Emphasis is on "brief" consequences to be dealt with. Wonder when it was last updated? I hope citizens of NJ and elsewhere will approach their state advisory bodies and legislators with evidence from Chernobyl and Fukushima!

I agree. It is criminally negligent!
The 'understatements' do prevail.
They also use the words, MAY and 'most likely' quite a bit.
Like a 'disclaimer' it probably helps with the 'legalities'.
I wonder what others states radiation pamphlets look like?
That's a project for another day.

1. "— the heroic workers… barely averted a catastrophic disaster that could have contaminated much of eastern Japan, including Tokyo."
(NOT an understatement: "could have contaminated" should say… "did contaminate". A CATASTROPHIC DISASTER was NOT averted.)
2. "…the workers successfully shut down all of the reactors and averted a catastrophic nuclear chain reaction."
(The 'chain reaction' part is debatable perhaps, but saying that it 'averted catastrophe' is NOT TRUE and misleading at best.)
The 'heroic workers' part is true, but the rest is more than 'disinformation'.

atomic rod adams the nuclear mouthpiece
Anyone care to b***h slapp this blind nucleocratic tool with the facts?
He says:
Arnie Gundersen Caught on Video Lying About Risk of Radiation Released During Fukushima Event
Arnie Gundersen, the sole engineer of Fairewinds Associates, continues to tell lies about the radiation released from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plants. He also continues to lie about the potential effects and seeks to spread fear and uncertainty where neither one are justified. He is a dangerous man on a mission to make money by harming the industry that once employed him – until he was fired for poor performance of his assigned duties.

Rod is just jealous of Arnie's expertise. And angry because his little dream of getting rich building small reactors never got any interest.
We all know how he would fare in an open discussion on TV with Arnie… Rod would be exposed as the liar and an ass to boot.
Get over yourself Rod, you've got nothing they want to hear at CNN. You should have stayed in the Navy a few more decades. Life underwater is exsctly where you fit in best…with a bunch of manly men.

Lol, thats what I'm talkin about. Das Boot! Gives new meaning to his name. I bet he enjoyed "collecting the garbage" on that big deep diving submarine.
I always wonder about the ones who back up their words with "check my resume listed, it proves I know what I'm talking about"
And I apologize for giving a tiny little man riding on a tiny little reactor any more exposure than his tiny little blog gives him…

This is about as inaccurate as it gets. Obviously the author is not researching the reports from TEPCO or anywhere else for that matter. IMO – this is an outright lie!
Dis or Mis information stated is bordering on criminal, as many could suffer as a result of this horrible inaccuracy."

My biggest fear is that misinformation, such as this clown is spewing, will cause harm. It goes beyond negligent.
Note: My observation. The FEAR factor, radiophobia, seems to be a media push over the last several weeks.
IMO – If meltdowns did nothing more than cause mass psychological damage, then that itself is too much. A broken windmill has never caused mental stress to an entire population.

Nuclear energy opponents use scare tactics
The storage of used fuel at Limerick is another Cuthbert fear-mongering tool. The pools are safe by strict NRC standards. We saw at Fukushima that even a huge earthquake and tsunami did not result in fuel overheating in the pools.

Forrest Remick is a Senior Nuclear Safety Consultant to Talisman. He completed a five-year term as a Commissioner of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) on June 30, 1994 and is now a private consultant to various government, industry and university clients.
When appointed to the Commission by President Bush, Dr. Remick was Associate Vice President for Research and Professor of Nuclear Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University. He was also serving as Chairman of the NRC's independent statutory Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards. During his tenure as a Commissioner of the NRC, the relicensing rule was written and adopted. Dr. Remick was intimately involved in the development of the rule and was instrumental in resolving differences between the NRC staff and the nuclear power industry. At his request, a series of meetings were held between the staff and representatives of the industry to rewrite certain provisions in the final rule to make it acceptable to both parties.

DR. FORREST J. REMICK
Nuclear energy opponents spread fear and disinformation
The size of the equipment in such a plant including how nuclear plants are generally similar to other steam-electric plants except: (1) that the source of energy necessary for the process comes from the fissioning of uranium in contrast to the combustion of coal, oil, or natural gas; and, (2) that there are no unmonitored or polluting gases, particulates or other material released to the atmosphere.
That all steam-electric plants require cooling, mostly by the use of water; that not only nuclear plants use cooling towers; that cooling towers are used to reduce the amount of heat discharged to nearby streams for environmental protection reasons; and, that the discharge from the cooling towers is water vapor containing no pollutants.
