Can one person make a difference? Ask Ben Davis:
California’s Secretary of State approved a ballot initiative November 18 that seeks the closure of San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station and the Diablo Canyon plant.
The initiative was filed by Ben Davis Jr. [who] drafted this and an earlier petition that led to the closure of the Rancho Seco power plant in June 1989.
As drafted, the latest initiative parallels existing state law prohibiting the creation of new nuclear plants until the federal government finds a solution to dispose of radioactive nuclear waste and reprocess spent fuel rods. If enacted, the initiative would essentially shut down the state’s two remaining nuclear plants by stopping them from creating additional waste until a federal solution arrives. […]
Davis has until April 16, 2012 to collect the 504,760 needed signatures to allow the initiative to go the voters in the fall presidential election. He expected to start the signature drive after the Thanksgiving weekend.
Post your petition links, ways to contact decision makers, ideas for future projects, action plans, news reports, inspirational words, tips for increasing signatures/exposure, questions… whatever you can think of concerning this issue. Here is a video to get things rolling:

Hi Whoopie and others,
Am trying to alert local officials (mayors, city council members, water board officials, etc.) as to the danger of incoming radiactive debris/tsunami in the SF-CA Bay Area. Am hoping to coordinate efforts with others. Perhaps we can do this as a regional effort (and not duplicate effort). Have journalistic,, business, and some scientific background to offer here, plus other professional writing ….
Presenting to local city council/water board meeting tomorrow night. Have only three minutes, but if it goes well, can share what I’m putting together with others.
If interested in further discussion, you have my permission to contact the moderator and ask for my off-list e-mail address. I’ll see if I can figure out how to contact him myself, and give him the OK to share my e-mail address.
Also interested in coordinating with others for the upcoming CA ballot initiative to close the San Onofre and Diablo Canyon plants.
Totally of topic… To all of U in the United Stated (including me) have a happy Thanksgiving or the beginning of the persecution of the Native Americans day as I refer to it…. either way enjoy the day for whatever it means to you.
Same to you oscar!! A whole bunch of interesting NEW revelations in H.Zinn’s The Peoples History of U.S if your interested. ASHAMED i am after reading it. 🙁 It’s a book that should be in every Americans library.
Oh, Whoopie! My favorite book ever. I loaned mine out last year, couldn’t remember who borrowed it, so had to go buy another copy. All TRUTH, and all documented.
Mine too PD! It TELLS IT LIKE IT WAS/is. Indexed with every fact. I’ll miss Howard Zinn. Truth teller.

You’re a rock star, Whoopie! 🙂
A spy in the midst?
Now that I got your attention…I noticed when “Auntie Nuke” linked the poll at enenews on California’s nuclear plants, there was an increase in pro-nuke votes…
Pro-nuclear lobbiers and lobbyists will fight tooth and nail to keep California’s nuclear plants open.
If they get shut down, it could cause a domino effect across the country.
They have the money. All we have on our side is the truth and the facts.
If you have a Facebook account and you see polls/articles like this, please take a minute to write a comment educating people on the truth about nuclear energy.
http://taxdollars.ocregister.com/2011/11/23/poll-would-you-vote-to-shut-down-san-onofre/139673/
You can see by the comments that some Californians don’t understand how dangerous nuclear energy can be…that radiation is spewed into the environment from power plants during their “normal” operations…that their tax dollars are used…that if there’s an accident, their children can end up with cancer and leukemia, and their million dollar mansions could be contaminated and then worthless…that California is on the Ring of Fire where 90% of earthquakes occur…
Again, please take a minute to comment with facts whenever you see articles and polls like the one linked above.
Here’s an online version. Full text. 🙂

Aww, bugger it. That was supposed to have been in reply to Whoopie and PoorDaddy. I don’t know why my comment popped up in a wrong place. 🙁
I’ll try again: Here’s the online version of Howard Zinn’s “A People’s History Of The United States”

Remembering the atrocious way the people from my part of the world with their insensitivity, greed, and brutality, lost the moral high ground forever on encountering an unspoilt land and a people of great personal honour, courage, and talent.
Some Native American morality lives on, very much, south of the Caribbean Sea. I am privileged and feel humbled to have been embraced by that world. To those “half brothers” north of the Isthmus of Panama, condolences, and take heart for the continuance of your line and a better life for your descendents.
– somehow, I would like to think, this will happen –
Best wishes

Suffolk Co. NY to hear proposal to ban chemtrails
On Dec. 6, New York’s Suffolk County government will hold a public hearing on a proposal to ban aerial spraying of aluminum oxide, barium, sulfur, and other salts into the air over the county without first filing an Environmental Impact Statement with and receiving approval from the county’s Department of Health Services, Division of Environmental Quality.
The hearing will be held at the Riverhead Legislative Auditorium, Evans K. Griffing Building, 300 Center Drive in Riverhead, NY at 2:30 pm.
If the public is able to convince legislators of the risk from such geoengineering operations, the legislation will then be voted on at the Dec. 20th session. Otherwise, the proposed ban will be tabled indefinitely.
The Piloulases and Ciresi will speak on Dec. 6 and are urging people to “pack the hearing” to show support for the ban.
“If this proposal becomes law in Suffolk County, Long Island, it would be the first in the nation. It would be a starting point for others to follow,” said LISW in a press release. “Eventually, our governments would have to investigate why our trees are dying in record numbers; why our waters contain toxic levels of aluminum, barium and strontium; why 90% of us are vitamin D deficient; why our crops are failing; and where all of this crazy weather is coming from.”
Cindy Pikoulas of LISW spoke with New York Sky Watch radio on Nov. 20, when she advised that tree samples from Suffolk show high levels of barium, strontium and aluminum. She is asking Long Islanders to have their water and trees tested for these chemicals in order to build a body of evidence that would spur investigations by health and environment authorities.
In addition to attending the Dec. 6 hearing, Long Islanders can contact their county legislators via http://legis.suffolkcountyny.gov/legislators.html
http://foodfreedom.wordpress.com/2011/11/24/suffolk-co-ny-to-hear-proposal-to-ban-chemtrails/
You can read the full text of Suffolk’s proposed legislation at the source linked to above.
If successful, maybe this can be a tool to find out where things like the strontium is coming from.
NO NUKES ACTION — for/by people in the Bay Area who are against nuclear renaissance

Right now, the Japanese whaling fleet is barrelling south to hunt thousands of majestic whales, escorted by a 30 million dollar security force paid for out of the nuclear disaster relief fund!
Anti-whaling champions were actually stopping Japan’s attack on whales — which is why the government swiped relief money for security to block activists from bothering the boats during their brutal slaughter. This, while thousands of mothers and children languish in radioactive hotspots without the support they need to escape.
Japanese PM Noda is already under enormous pressure after scandalous failures to tell the truth about the nuclear leaks and failures to compensate victims. We can shame him into returning the relief money to victims and end the whale hunt before it’s too late — sign the petition and forward to everyone:
http://www.avaaz.org/en/japan_disaster_funds_whaling_b/?vl
Japan’s ailing whaling industry is astronomically expensive to maintain – it costs up to $35,000 to kill a single whale, and the industry already receives $6 million annually in government payout. But now the Prime Minister will squander an additional $30 million to provide security for whale slaughterers to make sure they’re not bothered by environmental activists in the ocean. With added muscle, Japan plans to kill over 1,000 Minke whales for commercial meat sales this year.
Officials claim that whaling subsidies will support coastal communities hit by the tsunami — even though Japan has had to stockpile whale meat because so few people wish to consume it. All the while, the government has turned a blind eye to victims trapped in radiation hot-spots, with the few who are entitled to compensation pocketing a pitiful $1,000.
Let’s urge Prime Minister Noda to stop caving to the whaling lobby and spend relief money on the people who need it most: the victims — sign the urgent petition now, and forward widely:
http://www.avaaz.org/en/japan_disaster_funds_whaling_b/?vl
Last year, our community came together to win the preservation of a global whaling ban — only to see our efforts attacked by Japan’s government using money intended for needy families. Just last month, 130,000 Japanese Avaaz members joined together, urging the government to protect radiation-exposed children. Let’s keep pushing for safety and justice for disaster-affected families, and the health of our planet for future generations.
With hope and determination,
Stephanie, Jamie, Emma, Morgan, Laura, Wissam, Ricken, Wen-Hua and the rest of the Avaaz team

Hi everyone. Wanted a to add a way to get information out to a larger group of people. Posting on the Occupy Facebook pages help big time. But you are not allowed to spam or you can be blocked from posting anywhere but your own wall for up to 2 weeks. So post on at most 2 or 3 sites at a time so you do not get *punished. The best times to post are Fri nites, and Saturday & Sunday afternoons & evenings. Generally posting after 8 pm through the week will have more reading it & less chance of it quickly scrolling off the page. Note: You can search for justOccupy in Facebook to find various pages. Some of the pages do not allow for others to post so I just bypass those.
When creating a post about radiation on your wall be sure to set it as Public~!~
They can also prevent you from commenting. So now I go to Occupy facebook pages & direct them to my wall where I have collected a group of video’s & links that tell the most information in the briefest amount of time. I also included 2 petitions. Unfortunately the AVAAZ petition in no longer available. You are welcome to go my wall & copy & paste everything from the post & my comments & add it to your wall. Then you can go to Occupy facebook groups or other pages & direct them to your page. By posting it on your wall you can add more links as you see fit.

Petition: For a total transparency on the airborne radioactivity we are breathing http://petitions.criirad.org/?For-a-total-transparency-on-the
NOTE: Available in different languages by choosing your language near top of page.
There are 60 certified radionuclide stations fully equipped with high precision detectors that are set up around the world to monitor airborne radioactivity on a daily basis with unprecedented accuracy. Their objective : Find low quantities of radioactive particles that could reveal a possible nuclear test in violation of the Comprehensive nuclear test ban treaty (TICEN).
Results of the analyses would allow a follow up, day by day since March 12, 2011, of the evolution on the contaminated airborne masses linked to the radioactive rejections of the FUKUSHIMA DAIICHII nuclear plant. To date this is still impossible as the data are being confiscated by the States. The results are communicated to pre selected official organizations required to keep all information away from public awareness.
This global measuring network is financed by Public funds. Populations have the right to have access to this information. All the figures without exception must be published and not just a few figures carefully selected by the authorities.
I hereby demand that the results of the analyses conducted to measure the airborne radioactivity by the global network (TICEN) be made public, ENTIRELY AND WITHOUT ANY FURTHER DELAY.
Funded by all the citizens of member states, these figures must be made available to public knowledge to serve their right to protection and safety.
Dear fellow American,
Gun-grabbers around the globe believe they have it made.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton recently announced the Obama Administration will be working hand-in-glove with the UN to pass a new “Small Arms Treaty.”
Disguised as an “International Arms Control Treaty” to fight against “terrorism,” “insurgency” and “international crime syndicates,” the UN’s Small Arms Treaty is in fact a massive, GLOBAL gun control scheme.
If passed by the UN and ratified by the U.S. Senate, the UN “Small Arms Treaty” would almost certainly FORCE the United States to:
*** Enact tougher licensing requirements, making law-abiding Americans cut through even more bureaucratic red tape just to own a firearm legally;
*** CONFISCATE and DESTROY ALL “unauthorized” civilian firearms (all firearms owned by the government are excluded, of course);
*** BAN the trade, sale and private ownership of ALL semi-automatic weapons;
*** Create an INTERNATIONAL gun registry, setting the stage for full-scale gun CONFISCATION.
I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that this is NOT a fight we can afford to lose.
I’m helping lead the fight to defeat this radical treaty in the United States Senate and I want your help.

A Simple Statement On Nuclear Power and Climate Change
We’re getting a little tired hearing nuclear industry lobbyists and pro-nuclear politicians allege that environmentalists are now supporting nuclear power as a means of addressing the climate crisis. We know that’s not true, and we’re sure you do too. In fact, using nuclear power would be counterproductive at reducing carbon emissions. As Amory Lovins of Rocky Mountain Institute points out, “every dollar invested in nuclear expansion will worsen climate change by buying less solution per dollar…”
The simple statement below will be sent to the media and politicians whenever they misstate the facts. We hope you and your organization will join us and sign on in support here.
“We do not support construction of new nuclear reactors as a means of addressing the climate crisis. Available renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies are faster, cheaper, safer and cleaner strategies for reducing greenhouse emissions than nuclear power.”

Many people are not aware of how invasive this Bill is & how concerned both Lawyers & Privacy Commissionaires are. I quoted Privacy Commissioners & also showed examples of what is occurring in the U.S. in the Handout.
Please share this handout even weekly in different areas in order to keep people talking about it & to ensure they are informed. Below is one quote I used in the handout:
“The new powers envisaged are not limited to specific, serious offenses or urgent or exceptional situations. In the case
of access to *subscriber data*, there is not even a requirement for the commission of a crime to justify access to personal information – real names, home address, unlisted numbers, email addresses, IP addresses and much more – Without a Warrant.”
“The true importance of privacy protection is that it underpins our democratic freedoms. It allows us to exercise these
freedoms openly, without fear, mistrust or censorship. This is why caution is so critical, to avoid the possible erosion of
our free, open society.” …Stated by Jennifer Stoddart, Federal Privacy Commissioner of Canada on Oct. 27/2011 in the 3rd
letter to government stating her concerns.
Privacy is not about secrecy, it is about the right to determine Who has your information & How it is used.
One point to consider about warrantless spying. Have you ever gone to a site & read or watched something on a website that you did Not agree with or even hated? Well *authorites will not know that. They make conclusions based on what you type online & the sites you have been on.
Something to consider as well with this Bill, if there is no judicial oversight then if abuse occurs or you are wrongfully accused No one is accountable. Also the large databases required will allow hackers access to your information & allow someone to steal your identity.
~Do you think you data will be safely stored by the government? You best think again.

A new report from McAfee reveals the existence of a major hacking scheme that persisted for years and pilfered data from governments and organizations from around the world.
Four Canadian targets were among the scheme's dozens of victims, which also included the U.S. government and ASEAN, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
The attacks also struck the United Nations and the International Olympic Committee, as well as various defence contractors, local governments and two U.S. news organizations.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. is reporting that key government agencies in Canada were the targets of a sophisticated cyber attack aimed at stealing sensitive government information.
According to the CBC report, issued Thursday, the attacks on the Finance Department started with spear phishing attacks aimed at senior Finance Department personnel, but spread to other targets.

Today, NIRS and 37 other organizations submitted a formal Petition for Rulemaking to the NRC to expand emergency evacuation zones around U.S. nuclear reactors and make other improvements in emergency preparedness. We're calling this the Nuclear 911 campaign.
You can join us as a co-petitioner below!
The widespread radioactive contamination caused by the Fukushima nuclear disaster (and Chernobyl before it) makes clear that the current 10 mile Emergency Planning Zones in the U.S. are woefully inadequate to protect the American people.

HELP US HELP YOU ORGANIZE AND MOBILIZE!
Dear Friends,
The first anniversary of Fukushima is rapidly approaching and groups around the U.S. and across the world are organizing protests and other actions. Not far behind are the Three Mile Island and Chernobyl anniversaries–traditionally times of action. And this year there is a also a call for support actions against Vermont Yankee on March 24, which was scheduled to close on March 21.
We've heard about protest rallies and other events in Vermont, Georgia, Maryland, New York and elsewhere; now we want to learn about and help with your plans!

Your welcome BreadAndButter & Good morning. 🙂 I think planned events will help motivate people more & get the word out. It also shows others that they are not alone & will help encourage them to speak up. I know this site helps people do that & is a perfect stepping stone to becoming an even louder voice against Nuclear power.
Remember everyone there are many ways you can help even if you are not able to attend any rallies. I will quote from this link: http://org2.democracyinaction.org/o/5502/t/0/blastContent.jsp?email_blast_KEY=1193993
"*Not part of a group or simply can't get out to an action? During March and April take advantage of the attention nuclear issues will be receiving and help build it: write letters to
(or e-mail) the editors of your local newspapers, blog postings, posts on social networks, call into talk radio shows, etc. Demand nuclear shutdown. Help let the world know that it's time to implement a nuclear-free carbon-free energy future!"

And make this ACTA Bill go away
“The agreement will create an “ACTA Committee” to make amendments to the agreement. The problem is that this committee is not accountable to anybody. It is outside the public and judicial process, and not accountable to a nation or an international body. The committee won’t even be accountable to those countries governed by the agreement, including the U.S. government and the European Commission."
~Update: 10 February 2012
Amazing! We smashed our 2 million target as we delivered to key decision-makers in Brussels this week — let's get to 3 million before the crucial parliamentary debates
"The oppressively strict regulations could mean people everywhere are punished for simple acts such as sharing a newspaper article or uploading a video of a party where copyrighted music is played. Sold as a trade agreement to protect copyrights, ACTA could also ban lifesaving generic drugs and threaten local farmers' access to the seeds they need. And, amazingly, the ACTA committee will have carte blanche to change its own rules and sanctions with no democratic scrutiny."
http://www.zdnet.com/blog/london/how-acta-would-affect-you-faq/2773
"Generic drugs are at risk of being considered illegal, and could be confiscated at borders, making the global fight against disease far more difficult."
"Corporations would in effect be able to prevent generic, non-branded medicines and drugs from reaching those who need them."

Head of Mozilla Says ACTA Is 'A Bad Way To Develop Internet Policy' http://blog.lizardwrangler.com/2012/02/10/acta-is-a-bad-way-to-develop-internet-policy/
"One aspect of the controversy about ACTA is the closed process where only a tiny subset of people affected by the law were allowed to participate. Another great controversy is about the actual content of ACTA. We know that the goal of stopping unauthorized access to digital content can lead to very dangerous results. The proposed SOPA and PIPA legislation in the U.S made this abundantly clear. This is an area where even good intentions can lead to imbalanced and dangerous results."
Building a healthy Internet takes all of us. It cannot be left to private, invitation-only process that excludes most of us. Some links for more information are below, and there is a great deal more information available. Please consider learning more and making your voice heard."

Following a long list of countries including Poland, Latvia and the Czech Republic, Bulgaria's government has now announced it's halting the ratification of the ACTA-treaty. Bulgaria's Minister of Economics and Energy even went as far as offering his resignation, while commenting:
"Since there are no damages for society, I believe the move is sufficient as a sign of assuming responsibility. I was convinced that this agreement would be beneficial for Bulgaria. Even now experts say its positive effects would outweigh the negative ones."

Tell our politicians: We're not monkeys!
We’re all monkeys, that’s what Tokyo governor Ishihara insinuated on Sunday when he heard that over 250,000 people in Tokyo had signed a petition supporting a referendum on nuclear power — finally gathering the signatures we need to push Tokyo's Assembly to call a free and fair vote!
Ishihara is resorting to insults in order to avoid honouring the right of citizens to choose Japan's energy future and has pledged not to bring the referendum forward in Tokyo. But we can drown out Ishihara's insults with a national cry for a free vote that no politician in Japan can ignore.
Let’s show our politicians we’re not monkeys and that they can't silence democracy with crude insults. Together we can build on the efforts of people in Tokyo with a public outcry in favour of a national referendum on Japan’s energy future. Sign now and forward this page widely.

The spearhead of this movement is the group; 10 Million People’s Action to say Goodbye to Nuclear Power Plants. This group, headed by the Nobel Prize winning author Kenzaburo Oe, has as its main promoters a number of leading Japanese artists and intellectuals, including the musician Ryuichi Sakamoto.
The aim of this group is to present a petition of 10 million signatures to the Japanese Prime Minister on the first anniversary of the triple disaster. To date, they have obtained around a million signatures.
About the Petition Form
In Japan, a personally signed petition is still more forceful than an Internet-based signature. Therefore, please print out the English petition form (pdf file) and send it to us by postal mail.

TELL SECRETARY CHU: STOP DOE LOANS FOR NEW GEORGIA REACTORS!
February 23, 2011
Dear Friends,
Two years ago, President Obama personally announced approval of a conditional taxpayer loan for new nuclear reactors in Georgia. Much has happened in those two years that make this conditional loan questionable at best, and more likely an $8 Billion+ loss to taxpayers. Indeed, two years later, President Obama's new budget asks for no new loan money for nuclear reactors–a dramatic shift from the past and one that reflects the reality of 2012. The DOE should now rescind this conditional loan for new reactors in Georgia, before the losses pile up.
Tell Secretary Chu to stop these loans now. http://org2.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=7b9Bx1kdZeUB7ZKLGOfvV6tcJcwJDh%2B1
While the NRC has granted a construction/operating license to these reactors–the condition that was to spark the taxpayer loan, several environmental groups, including NIRS, have filed suit in federal court charging that the granting of this license was illegal. Clearly, taxpayer loans must not be granted before the outcome of this suit is known.
The conditional loan guarantee was granted under the presumption that the reactors would be built on time and on budget. Today, even before real construction has begun, these reactors are already behind schedule and over budget, according to the Georgia Public Service Commission's own watchdog. The original Vogtle reactors were 1200% over budget when completed. The potential for taxpayer losses that would dwarf the Solyndra debacle is extraordinarily high. After all, this loan would be 15 times larger than the Solyndra loan, and is probably 50 times riskier.
At the time the conditional loan was granted, there was a belief that there might be a nuclear power "renaissance" in the U.S. After Fukushima, that is clearly not happening. Even Standard & Poor's last week http://org2.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=a0a72XcOLZNhviKwG1GHG6tcJcwJDh%2B1 found the prospects of such a "renaissance" to be "faint." The Georgia reactors have not been required to meet post-Fukushima regulatory guidelines, and will not inspire construction of other new reactors. There is simply no justification to continue with these loans.
Tell Secretary Chu to stop these loans now. http://org2.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=KnsMv8KuPPEvxChEIH%2BH6hnVGAhF7i5h
Last week, we told you about our Petition for Rulemaking to expand emergency evacuation zones around nuclear reactors. http://org2.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=Kn%2BJDayCDC5P%2FhNTWBxtWhnVGAhF7i5h We would all prefer that nuclear reactors simply closed, and we wouldn't have to deal with such issues. But the reality is that there are 104 nuclear reactors operating in the U.S. and despite our best efforts they are not all going to close tomorrow. And as long as they are operating, the American people deserve the best possible protection–and we're not now getting it.
Our petition would require the NRC to expand evacuation zones to reflect the lessons of Fukushima and Chernobyl, and, for the first time, require emergency drills that include natural disasters as initiating or concurrent to reactor meltdowns. Utilities that could not meet these new requirements would have to permanently close their reactors.
We've been gratified by the response to this petition. But if you have not yet signed on as a co-petitioner, please do so now. http://org2.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=t42wRGcm7BAds12p7BDJXKtcJcwJDh%2B1 The reason we are seeking the maximum possible co-petitioners is simple: the more people are telling the NRC they support us on this issue, the more likely the NRC is to take this seriously, open up the issue for public comment, and, eventually, implement the regulations we are recommending. So again, please sign on as a co-petitioner now! http://org2.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=hWeDfBOgNWlPE8lLC84amKtcJcwJDh%2B1
Finally, last week was NPR's fundraising week. We noticed that our local NPR station was raking in more per hour online than NIRS earns per month. Not that we have anything against NPR (although their nuclear power coverage ranges from non-existent to simply uninformed), but consider: we provide you with the best nuclear news daily–far more than NPR does. We do that on the new Nuclear Newsreel on our own website (www.nirs.org), on Facebook and on Twitter. Plus, we encourage you to not only read the news, but act on it! Can NPR say that? In short, if you believe in what NIRS is doing, and we hope you do, please contribute what you can and, in true NPR fashion, please consider becoming a sustaining member of NIRS and make a small monthly contribution. Monthly contributions may cost you one extra latte or six-pack a month, but for us, they are critical in making our cash flow work….. http://org2.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=yPDpNVzoefvh%2F31fr%2FC2yKtcJcwJDh%2B1

Stop the raping of the land, learn the truth about Keystone XL, it's devastating impact to the United States and support the effort to stop it:
http://www.tarsandsaction.org/spread-the-word/key-facts-keystone-xl/
Energy Security: Tar Sand will not Reduce Dependence on Foreign OilKeystone XL will not lessen U.S. dependence on foreign oil, but transport Canadian oil to American refineries for export to overseas markets.
Keystone XL is an export pipeline. According to presentations to investors, Gulf Coast refiners plan to refine the cheap Canadian crude supplied by the pipeline into diesel and other products for export to Europe and Latin America. Proceeds from these exports are earned tax-free. Much of the fuel refined from the pipeline’s heavy crude oil will never reach U.S. drivers’ tanks.
Reducing demand for oil is the best way to improve our energy security. U.S. demand for oil has been declining since 2007. New fuel-efficiency standards mean that this trend will continue once the economy gets back on track. In fact, the Energy Deptartment report on KeystoneXL found that decreasing demand through fuel efficiency is the only way to reduce mid-east oil imports with or without the pipeline.
Gas prices: Keystone XL will increase gas prices for Americans—Especially Farmers
By draining Midwestern refineries of cheap Canadian crude into export-oriented refineries in the Gulf Coast, Keystone XL will increase the cost of gas for Americans.
TransCanada’s 2008 Permit Application states “Existing markets for Canadian heavy crude, principally PADD II [U.S. Midwest], are currently oversupplied, resulting in price discounting for Canadian heavy crude oil. Access to the USGC [U.S. Gulf Coast] via the Keystone XL Pipeline is expected to strengthen Canadian crude oil pricing in [the Midwest] by removing this oversupply. This is expected to increase the price of heavy crude to the equivalent cost of impo

Dear Friends,
A very brief update. We have posted many new actions all across the U.S. on our Action page here.http://org2.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=pDDnhUqM%2FECvGk59wWAttWTGYS8tRnLG
From Alabama to Wisconsin, New York to California, there is almost certainly one not too far from you.
We are still adding actions as we receive word about them. If an action in your area isn't listed, please send the info to nirsnet@nirs.org. Actions taking place after this weekend will be added early next week.
Don't forget to click the link for global actions at the top of our action page to see the amazing number of events happening this weekend all across the world!
We sent out a press advisory today http://org2.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=Zl7WfZV5YkYSvnV3X7ryWWTGYS8tRnLG
to thousands of reporters across the world on anniversary actions. We encourage you to send it to your local media so they will realize the large number of events going on this weekend.
New England's SAGE Alliance has put out a call for actions across the country on March 24 to defend democracy and support the shutdown of Vermont Yankee and all GE Mark I reactors (and, for that matter, all reactors!). As you probably know, the Vermont legislature voted for permanent shutdown of Vermont Yankee on March 22. http://org2.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=jcGTAh4ApJ9PnrHsAn88dGTGYS8tRnLG
But legal wrangling from the Entergy Corporation will almost certainly delay that. Actions already have been set up for Vermont, Massachusetts and New York. We encourage all groups, and especially all groups near Mark I reactors, to set up a support action. For more information and to help coordinate, contact Kendra Ulrich of the Sage Alliance here. mailto:gaialuvnpeace@gmail.com?subject=March%2024%20support%20actions
Our movement is growing! Let's join together this weekend and beyond…

Please sign this petition of Physicians for Social Responsibility:
“The nuclear weapons danger is real and growing–nuclear terrorism, nuclear proliferation, and the thousands of weapons still on hair-trigger alert in the United States and Russia put the planet at risk. Fortunately, there also are new opportunities to eliminate this threat.
“We need your help to send a strong message to our government in favor of a nuclear free world. President Barack Obama is currently in the process of developing a Nuclear Policy Guidance Review that will help to set the United States on a path towards nuclear disarmament or, if the military-industrial complex succeeds, towards a massive increase in wasteful and dangerous spending on our nuclear arsenal. Help us now by signing this petition to let the President know that Americans want a future that moves towards the elimination of nuclear weapons.”

Another petition from Physicians for Social Responsibility:
Can Congress Prevent Cancer, Infertility, and Diabetes?
March 22, 2012
"Some of the most intractable health problems of our time — such as cancer, infertility, and diabetes — have been linked to toxic chemical exposures. But our current regulatory system allows chemicals to be freely sold with almost no information about their health effects.
"We think our regulatory system can do better. And Congress is considering a bill which does just that.
The Safe Chemicals Act (S. 847) would require greater safety of chemicals used in your consumer products, increase public access to health and safety information, and protect vulnerable populations like pregnant women and children.
"Ask your Senators to support the Safe Chemicals Act of 2011 today!"

Markey (D-Massachusetts) and the Institute for Policy Studies' Robert Alvarez on the ongoing impact of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster to public health 25 years after the accident, the continuing nuclear catastrophe in Fukushima, Japan, and the lessons from both for U.S. public health and safety.
