  • RUSSIA / BARENTS SEA

27th June 2017 – Russia begins removal of nuclear waste from Cold War-era submarine base

    Extracts:

For the last 35 years, the old submarine base at Andreyeva Bay has held some 22,000 nuclear fuel assemblies, enough for over 100 reactors’ worth of fuel, from over 50 nuclear submarines, in three storage containers. According to Anatoly Grigoriev, Rosatom’s leading specialist in the coordination and implementation of international programs, removing them will take around 10 years.

In 1982 one of the storage tanks was damaged and started leaking radioactive water into the Barents Sea, and a new emergency facility had to be set up. But by the early 1990s, all operations there were terminated and the naval base was closed. Since the late 1990s Russia has been co-operating with Norway, and later Sweden, Italy and the UK, to clean up the site and eliminate the leaks as a source of pollution.

    Comment:

100 nuclear reactors worth of fuel is a massive amount of radioactive waste that has to be dealt with. How much nuclear pollution has leaked into the Barents Sea? Great to see a multinational effort to deal with this issue.

    Report

    Alert Caloundra June 2017

There was a steady increase in background levels in early June, that increased to alert levels towards mid June.

As this event started in early June, the bench area around the monitoring GammaScout Geiger counter was cleaned, and the GammaScout was also cleaned to eliminate the possibility of dust contamination. This has made no difference, as background levels remained higher than usual. This is the Southern Hemisphere winter. Until now, no June pre or post Fukushima background has been higher than 7% above average. We have 10 years of local records to refer to.

It was mostly dry for the month, with only 20mm of rain for the whole month. The local live radon monitor did detect small increases in local Radon levels that co-insided with recorded background radiation level increases. These Radon level increases were still relatively low, and would have only been part of the contributing cause to the background level increase.

So what caused this significant increase in local background levels for June 2017, here in the Southern Hemisphere?

RE: Caloundra data – That yearly avg chart slope seems to indicate a steady rise, any idea what was causing that ?

I also notice the yearly cycle is fairly consistent.

Could the elevated summer readings be related to increased dust born particulate rad from mining operations?

What's the general wind direction for the months?

Is there some other source nearby? ie an ore processing facility or waste storage site, or maybe an export shipping port.

        Interesting data.

        • "I also notice the yearly cycle is fairly consistent."

Yes, it has been a consistent. We see background levels drop as the seasonal change in wind direction occurs. Air flows change from a tropical North direction in summer, to Souther Ocean air flows in the winter.

"Is there some other source nearby? ie an ore processing facility or waste storage site, or maybe an export shipping port."

No, as far a I can tell, none of these suggestion are a factor.

I notice that during June this year when there were elevate detections, the wind was mostly was coming for an easterly direction, off the Pacific ocean. The monitoring station location is on a headland facing the Pacific Ocean.

Volcanic releases?? The live Radon monitor here didn't show anything that would account for such a large increase.

          Still investigating.

        • "That yearly avg chart slope seems to indicate a steady rise, any idea what was causing that ?"

Well the upward trend started after Fukushima, before that it was pretty consistent averaging around 0.10 uSv/hr.

Four year local background radiation levels recorded from 2007 to 2011.

            Caloundra Water Tank Filter Test

Here is a test of 34 grams of organic material caught in a local water tank inlet filter.

            http://sccc.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/Tank-filter-organic-mater-34-grams-240617-TV-7.2-89849-text.png

The main isotopes detected were Beryllium Be-7 and Lead Pb-210. Beryllium Be-7 can be created naturally in trace amounts by spallation in the upper atmosphere by cosmic rays. Lead Pb-210 is the decay daughter of naturally occurring Radon-222 decay.

The scintillator device used for testing loses sensitivity with increasing isotope energy (keV). Taking the difference in sensitivity into account, the Be-7 peak is around 14 times higher than than the chart indicates. The Pb-210 would be around twice as high as show on the chart.

That is a lot of Be-7 in 34 grams of material. Would the levels of Pb-210 and Be-7 detected in the organic material collected from the water tank filter be sufficient to explain the significantly elevated local background levels here in…

            • Would the levels of Pb-210 and Be-7 detected in the organic material collected from the water tank filter be sufficient to explain the significantly elevated local background levels here in June?

              My Theory

There must have been a significant amount of cosmic ray spallation happening in the upper atmosphere recently, to produce this much Be-7.

The sun is becoming far less radiant. The sun is going into one of it's quiet periods. These occur approximately every four hundred years. Less radiance means the sun's heliosphere is much weaker. The sun's heliosphere acts as a shield, protecting the Earth from in coming cosmic rays. A much weaker heliosphere means more cosmic rays strike the upper atmosphere, which results in more atmospheric spallation, hence more Be-7 is detected in the water tank filter test.

I notice that when the elevated detections occurred in June, the wind was mostly coming from an easterly direction, off the Pacific Ocean. This suggests that volcanic and earthquake releases of naturally occurring Radon-222 into the atmosphere, was also a contributing factor.

5th August 2017 – Hanford nuclear workers swallowed radiation particles, test positive for contamination – report

    Extracts:

Several of the workers tasked with one of the largest nuclear cleanup efforts in the world have tested positive for radiation contamination. Out of the fraction of workers tested, 20 percent were found with “internal exposures.”

Several workers told KING they were shocked by the number of employees that were contaminated internally as the result of a single event.

“In 36 years I’ve not seen this many people with internal exposure,” an anonymous Hanford worker told KING. “It’s a monstrous deal. And the workers know it, but they don’t want to say anything. They’re afraid.”

    Comment:

There must have been a significant amount of airbourne radioactive material released during this event at Hanford site.

2nd February 2016 – Dogs fed sardines show high Strontium levels

    Extracts:

This month, I have had two dog patients with severely elevated levels of the element strontium. The interesting part is that these two dogs were fed a high amount of sardines and I highly suspect that strontium is coming from this source.

Strontium acts in the body the same way as calcium and deposits in bones. Sardines and other small fish are eaten whole with the bones and that is why they are more likely a source of this toxic element.

The reason why I am concerned is that the radioactive isotope strontium 90 is a toxic carcinogen and it has been released in Japan’s Fukushima disaster.

Thank you, MVB. Yes, there is something unusual going on. Your summary is much appreciated.

Haven't had a chance to see if perhaps events at Hanford have changed things. Did consider some contamination may be working its way southward.

But cities like Redding, CA, have not shown noticeable increases in radiation since July. It has been pretty stable (low CPM's) there.

The CA west coast in and around SF Bay, inland to Sacramento, have been high.

Can't comment on other CA, Oregon, or Washington cities.

Something noteworthy, though — since the Hanford tunnel collapse, the Boise, Idaho, and Spokane, WA NETC data monitors have been offline most of the time. Haven't seen any data from Boise, Idaho for several months. Idaho Falls has been monitoring, and their levels have been overall high. Montana levels are high – but that's not out of the ordinary.

Reno, Nevada has been relatively high. But that's also not out of the ordinary. Reno's levels are pretty high today. It looks like something is blowing in from the west here (Asia?)

      • HoTaters HoTaters

Earth nullschool wind map and this:

        http://hint.fm/wind/

show the jet stream is pulling air from Asia (including Macau region) northward to N. America, then southward along the U.S. West Coast.

So as far as California, Oregon, Washington go, we're likely getting air flow from Asia. Plus any possible contamination coming over from there.

And IF there's a problem at Hanford, the upper AND lower level winds are carrying it southward along the coast.

I know you Vital1 and MVB were observing Texas, but MVB you commented on uptick in radiation since at least the beginning of July. And there's something suspicious looking going on near Macau.

And God only knows what's going on at FDNPP and with Tepco.

They're supposedly going to dump tritiated water, but when did they ever keep their word? Who knows what they are actually dumping and what's getting out of that plant – both in the form of airborne and water-borne contamination.

Spokane showing 506 cpm on NETC. Reading from Spokane have been so elevated for so long that 506 no longer triggers an Alert flag because the averaging of high readings is now becoming the norm.

How long till 500 cpm is 'background' with spikes to 1000 to trig an Alert ?

Richland and Seattle lit up again also.

    Olympia showing a slight increase.

Hi freebywill, yes, have been observing same. Boise, Idaho, has been offline for months. And you are correct, the Spokane levels have been so high alerts are no longer triggered.

The West Coast (California in particular) has had a big uptick since the beginning of July, but esp. in August.

Today it's so high out there I don't even want to leave my house.

Time to turn up the HEPA filters, FWIW.

Wishing everyone blessings, hopefully we can find things to be thankful for, despite the curse of man-made radiation.

Praying for all the souls in and around Houston.

    Tradecraft: Radiation Sickness http://thefifthcolumnnews.com/2017/08/tradecraft-radiation-sickness/
by Friends of The Fifth Column • August 17, 2017
This report prepared by Joe Alton MD for Doom And Bloom

[ some excerpts, detail is at the link ]

A nuclear power plant meltdown is usually less damaging than a nuclear blast, as the radioactive material doesn’t make it as high up in the sky as the mushroom cloud from an atomic bomb. The worst effects will be felt by those near the reactors. Lighter particles, like radioactive iodine, will travel the farthest, and are the main concern for those far from the actual explosion or meltdown. The level of exposure will depend on the distance the radioactive particles travel from the meltdown and how long it took to arrive.

Different terms are used when describing the amount of radiation being given off by a source, the total amount of radiation that is actually absorbed by a human or animal, or the chance that a living thing will suffer health damage from exposure:

BECQUERELS/CURIES – these terms describe the amount of radiation that, say, a hunk of uranium gives off into the environment. Named after scientists who were the first to work with (and die from) radioactivity.

RADS – the amount of the radiation in the environment that is actually absorbed by a living thing.

REMS/SIEVERTS – the measurement of the risks of health damage from the radiation absorbed.

    [ cont.]

    • freebywill

      PROTECTION AGAINST EXPOSURE TO RADIATION

In the early going, your goal is to prevent exposures of over 100 RADS. A radiation dosimeter will be useful to gauge radiation levels and is widely available for purchase. This item will give you an idea of your likelihood of developing radiation sickness.

      1) Limit the time unprotected.
      2) Increase the distance from the radiation.
      3) Provide a barrier.

[ info on diff thickness of barrier materials ]

      TREATING RADIATION SICKNESS

Remove contaminated clothing and gently wash with soap and water.

[ for thyroid protection from radioactive iodine (I131) ]

Protection is available against some of the long term effects of radiation. Potassium Iodide (known by the chemical symbol KI), taken orally, can prevent radioactive Iodine from damaging the specific organ that it targets, the thyroid gland. The usual adult dose is 130 mg daily for 7-10 days or for as long as exposure is significant. For children, the dosage is 65 mg daily. KI is available in a FDA-approved commercial product called Thyrosafe.

      [ cont.]

      • freebywill

ALTERNATIVE REMEDY FOR RADIATION EXPOSURE [ for I131 ]

Don’t depend on supplies of the drug to be available after a nuclear event. Even the federal government will have little KI in reserve to give to the general population.
[ The gov't will keep the KI they have for themselves, your not the gov't so no KI for U ]
In recent power plant meltdowns, there was little or no Potassium Iodide to be found anywhere for purchase.

If you find yourself without any KI, consider this alternative: Povidone-Iodine solution (brand name Betadine). “Paint” 8 ml of Betadine on the abdomen or forearm 2-12 hours prior to exposure and re-apply daily. Enough should be absorbed through the skin to give protection against radioactive Iodine in fallout.

For children 3 years old or older (but under 150 lbs or 70 kg), apply 4 ml. Use 2 ml for toddlers and 1 ml for infants. This strategy should also work on animals. If you don’t have a way to measure, remember that a standard teaspoon is about 5 milliliters. Discontinue the daily treatment after 3-7 days or when Radioiodine levels have fallen to safer levels.

        [ cont ]

Hi freebywill, we have taken low doses of Lugol's for years. Had KI onhand when the tsunami first swamped Fukushima, and began taking it right away. Not sure if we did it in time.

Everyone on the planet got hammered by FDNPP releases, esp. the N. Hemisphere. To this day, remember how bad my lungs felt.

There are better products out there. Thanks for the info. on Povidone Iodine solution, too. We keep some of that around, too.

It's just too risky out there not to do it.

Too bad we can't protect ourselves from all the other airborne, water borne, soil borne nasties.

          Sigh.

Hi freebywill, I'd add this – put some baking soda into your rinse water when washing clothes. And or Borax.

The U.S. Navy uses baking soda to remediate contaminated clothing. Not sure what else they wash with it. RadChick left a good post here once re: this.

A solution heavy in bleach can also help in de-contamination.

Not sure why that works; and of course the bleach may be harmful under some circumstances.

1st August 2017 – India’s Nuclear Graveyard: Haunting images show the devastating effects of uranium mining in Jadugoda

    Extracts:

For years, the local population has suffered from the extensive environmental degradation caused by mining operations, responsible for the high frequency of radiation related sicknesses and developmental disorders found in the area. Increases in miscarriages, impotency, infant mortality, Down’s syndrome, skeletal deformities, thalassemia have been reported. With raw radioactive ‘yellow-cake’ production to increase and more than 100,000 tons of radio-active waste stored at Jadugoda the threat to the local tribal communities is set to continue.

More than a hundred thousand tons of nuclear waste stored in the tailing ponds is constantly producing large amount of toxic gases and nuclear radiation that contaminate the environment. The dumped nuclear waste remains radioactive and dangerous for millions of years.

9th July 2017 – Radioactively-hot particles detected in dusts and soils from Northern Japan by combination of gamma spectrometry, autoradiography, and SEM/EDS analysis and implications in radiation risk assessment

    Extracts:

Samples were collected and analyzed over a five-year period, from 2011 to 2016. Detectable levels of 134Cs and 137Cs were found in 142 of 180 (80%) Japanese particulate matter samples. The median radio-cesium specific activity of Japanese particulate samples was 3.2 kBq kg− 1 ± 1.8 kBq kg− 1, and the mean was 25.7 kBq kg− 1 (σ = 72 kBq kg− 1). The U.S. and Canadian mean and median radio‑cesium activity levels were < 0.03 kBq kg− 1. U.S. and Canadian samples had detectable 134Cs and 137Cs in one dust sample out of 32 collected, and four soils out of 74. The maximum US/Canada radio-cesium particulate matter activity was 0.30 ± 0.10 kBq kg− 1. The mean in Japan was skewed upward due to nine of the 180 (5%) samples with activities > 250 kBq kg− 1. This skewness was present in both the 2011 and 2016 sample sets.

freebywqill, yes, what's up with all the missing RadNet stations? NETC is missing a bunch of stations. I'm assuming those are the RadNet stations NETC shows as part of its data points.

It appears these stations have been offline for at least two days. I noticed this on 9/9/17 also. Today the stations are still offline.

Are they up to monkey business again? Hiding nuclear accidents or meltdowns on behalf of their dirty bedpartners (i.e., the hens in the henhouse, RadNet/EPA being the foxes? Or is that vice-versa?)

As many of us know, RadNet shut down almost everything when the plume from Fukushima hit.

    http://protectingyourpocket.blog.palmbeachpost.com/2017/03/22/nuclear-regulators-inspecting-fpls-turkey-point-plant-after-electrical-fault/

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission began a special inspection Wednesday at Florida Power & Light’s Turkey Point nuclear power plant to assess the failure of a safety-related electrical bus that resulted in the plant declaring an alert.

The plant is located near Homestead, Fla., about 25 miles south of Miami.

Saturday, an electrical fault occurred in a Unit 3 switchgear room, resulting in the loss of a safety related electrical bus — similar to a circuit breaker — and a reactor trip. Other safety systems functioned as required, ensuring adequate reactor cooling. There was no threat to local residents or the environment, and the alert, the second-lowest NRC emergency declaration, was terminated later that same day.

The electrical fault, which caused an arc flash, or small explosion, also damaged a nearby fire door, which may have left other safety systems vulnerable had there been a fire. A plant worker who was in the room was injured and was treated at a local hospital.

“This was an event that could have had serious safety consequences and we need to know more about what happened and why,” said NRC Region II Administrator Cathy Haney. “We felt a special inspection was warranted to gather more information and also determine if there are generic issues that may apply to other plants.”

Vita!, The food article is unbelievable, the member states of the EU accepting this crap. In the US and EU levels were raised from 25 Bq to 100Bq and up to 1,000 Bq was the last one to accept food. While Japan only accepts 100 Bq. Sure is a level playing field, isn't it. And I wouldn't believe the Japanese government if my life depended on it. They don't even allow their Japanese Doctors tell their patients they have Radiation illness and all the children with Thyroid disorders. "You get sick if you don't smile enough"

Japan is dead!!! The whole place is radioactive!!! Watch out for Japanese food being send to China to be packaged and shipped from China as a Chinese export. Be-careful particularly of Sunflower oil- the Japanese are raising massive fields of it in and around Fuku because sunflowers are great for sucking up toxic materials including Cesium 134 & 137 from the ground. The Russians used them around Cher, but didn't make oil or sell them. The Russians are honorable unlike the nasty, lying Japanese government. And the 2020 Games are a joke!!!

The US government even announce this were going to do it here. I think they started in Feb. of either 2016 or 2017. After that the readings were higher here. But I think they may have cut back a little now.

    • "what is happening in your area as June, July, and August, 2017 are so high in Radiation?"

Historically from the recorded data our background here is lower in the cooler months of June, July, and August.

What is causing the increase? My question also.

I cleaned bench area around the monitoring GammaScout Geiger counter. The GammaScout was also cleaned to eliminate the possibility of dust contamination. This made no difference as background levels have remained higher than usual for this time of the year, which is the Southern Hemisphere winter.

It has been very dry, hardly any rain, and radon levels have been low.

    Report

Caloundra September 2017 – In the last few months there has been a steady increase in month averages at this location in the Southern Hemisphere. The months have been very dry. The month rainfall total was 15mm and the wettest day was the 23rd, with 13mm. Radon levels have been low, so it did not contribute significantly to the day average increases we have seen through September.

I have been trying to work out why there has been an unseasonal increase in background here in winter, on top of the normal Fukushima increase.

So what created these recent increases?

    Here are some theories.

    1. There has been more mixing of Northern and Southern hemisphere tropical air flows, allowing more radiation from the Northern hemisphere to enter the Southern Hemisphere.

    2. Research is showing that more cosmic rays are now reaching the Earth because the Sun's heliosphere is decreasing in intensity. (2017 chart of Cosmic Ray increases.) This is part of a normal Sun cycle that occurs approximately every 420 years.

2nd October 2017 – Scientists find new source of radioactivity from Fukushima disaster

    Extracts:

Scientists have found a previously unsuspected place where radioactive material from the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant disaster has accumulated—in sands and brackish groundwater beneath beaches up to 60 miles away. The sands took up and retained radioactive cesium originating from the disaster in 2011 and have been slowly releasing it back to the ocean.

The team sampled eight beaches within 60 miles of the crippled Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant between 2013 and 2016. They plunged 3- to 7-foot-long tubes into the sand, pumped up underlying groundwater, and analyzed its cesium-137 content. The cesium levels in the groundwater were up to 10 times higher than the levels found in seawater within the harbor of the nuclear power plant itself. In addition, the total amount of cesium retained more than 3 feet deep in the sands is higher than what is found in sediments on the seafloor offshore of the beaches.

  • EUROPE (Multi country radiation detections)

6th October 2017 – Environment Pollution in MultiCountries

    Extract:

German officials say that a spike in radioactivity has been detected in the air in Western and Central Europe but there's no threat to human health. The Federal Office for Radiation Protection said Thursday that elevated levels of the isotope Ruthenium-106 have been reported in Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland and France since Sept. 29.

Spokesman Jan Henrik Lauer told The Associated Press the source of the Ruthenium-106 isn't known but calculations indicate it may have been released in eastern Europe. Ruthenium-106 is used for radiation therapy to treat eye tumors, and sometimes as a source of energy to power satellites.

  • Checkmate

It doesn't look good in Australia, Vital1. Your average for this year 2017 has exceeded the total average for the complete year of 2016 so far and you still have 3 mos. left to go… Its out of sight there.
And I hate to think what the readings for the US are- since we are farther North and in direct fire of Japan. It must be totally unbelievable!!!
Nothing like building Nuclear Reactions on swamps in earthquake zones and having 4 melt-downs and stupidly starting up 5 more in the same small country.
Well as long as we are corporate citizens the Presidents/C.E.O. will protect us from all evil. Just ask them…

    • The rain water filter testing is not showing any significant fallout from Fukushima. What has been detected recently is Lead-210 and Beryllium-7. The amount of Be-7 detected points to a lot of cosmic ray spallation occurring in the upper atmosphere.

My conclusion below is based on what has been detected in the environmental tests, that have been conducted here recently.

Recent increases in cosmic ray activity, plus the post Fukushima increase, and occasionally Radon releases from eastern Pacific volcanic activity, are all now contributing to the local background levels we are now seeing locally here.
