Enthalpy [comment to Krypton-85 in our atmosphere]

“Krypton-85 85Kr is a beta emitter with 687keV maximum energy and 10.7 year half-life. It's produced by uranium fission with 0.27% yield (137Cs and 90Sr: 6%). Here is a report, a bit old and in French, but figures read the same in English anyway:
    http://www.irsn.fr/EN/Research/publi…ts/Kr85SAN.pdf

“When reprocessing used nuclear fuel rods at La Hague, solid fission products like 137Cs and 90Sr are separated for storage, but 85Kr is just diluted and emitted in the atmosphere. For instance in 1999, La Hague emitted 2.9*1017 Bq of 85Kr, more than the radioactivity of 137Cs and 90Sr released by the Chernobyl disaster.

“Iodine, caesium, strontium radioisotopes fall on the soil more quickly and locally if emitted, and accumulate in the food chain. Krypton, as a noble gas, dilutes in the whole northern hemisphere's atmosphere, where in 2001 it added 1.2 Bq/m3, with 3/4 of it coming from La Hague – it must be worse by now.

“How bad is such an added radioactivity, much smaller than natural sources anyway? It irradiates a human body by 4nSv/yr, or 500nSv/yr at the skin as beta rays don't go deep. No experimental data tells the effect of such a low dose; scientific near-consensus is to extrapolate proportionally from higher doses, taking 1% more risk of a fatal cancer per 0.2Sv exposure.

    Report Comment

    • anne anne

      [cont.]
Over 30 years, this adds only 6*10-9 risks of casualty – but for each of the 6 billion people in the hemisphere, meaning an estimated 36 casualties.

“Note the 1% per 0.2 Sv is a whole-body average, but external beta rays damage essentially the skin. It seems that 500 nSv/yr at the skin is a bit worse than the deep 4 nSv/yr taken here.

“Some people challenge that the risk is proportional to the dose; they want to see some dose threshold below which the risk vanishes. Among them is Areva, the operator of La Hague.

“I consider that since 85Kr arrives from the power plants confined in fuel rods, keeping all 85Kr confined in some storage can't be that difficult. And to avoid three dozens possible deaths, it should be done, without arguing about risk models.”

    You Can't "Nuke" Global Warming!

“….Nuclear Power Itself Causes Global Warming!

“While nuclear industry spokesmen are fond of pointing out that nuclear power plants release no greenhouse gasses in operation, they always fail to point out that Uranium Enrichment accounts for huge percentages of some CFCs released in this country. For example, United States Enrichment Corporation's sites in Ohio and Kentucky released 800,000 pounds of CFC-114 in 1999. CFC-114 lasts 300 years in the atmosphere, and causes 9800 times more global warming per pound than CO2. So US enrichment activities in 1999 released the equivalent of 3,920,000 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere. In addition to global warming, CFC's in the atmosphere cause another problem. They destroy the ozone layer. CFC-114 is one of the worst substances know to man in terms of ozone destruction. This is all just more evidence that Nuclear Power is not a clean technology!

“Nuclear Power Won't Work in a Global Warming World

“Nuclear power plants require water. Lots and lots of cooling water. The majority of water used for any purpose in Illinois – more that 75% – is used as reactor coolant.

What happens when global climate change results in more hot, dry summers (punctuated by violent storms which create runoff but don't raise river levels for longer than a few days? With increasing electricity demand for air conditioners, higher environmental temperatures and less water in the rivers, the reactors will have to shut down or cook the fish. It has already happened here, and in France in 2005. NEIS has a two-page .pdf report discussing the ways in which Nuclear Power Plants can't operate in a Global warming world.

Good stuff Anne.. How about this for a sound bite from that article on water source problems for cooling nuke plants?

"In August 2003, temperatures inside the Fessenheim plant reached 50 degrees, and the facility's authorities ordered high pressure hoses to wet down the exterior walls — a rather primitive method to cool off the reactor in an era of advanced technology."

        http://www.neis.org/Content/Global_Warming_Shuts_French_Nukes.htm

SP: That imagery sounds way too familiar now based on the water cannon usage at Fukushima after Elvis has left three reactor buildings. Fighting nuclear fires with buckets of water is still the primary method to preventor remediate a nuclear accident. And we can certainly see water has been losing the Battle for Fukushima.

If the battle to contain Fukushima Daiichi nuclear megaplex becomes hopeless and workers flee forever… what kind of spin will the Tepco PR men invent to explain how they murdered the human race?

19 years ago warned of the dangers of antidepressants during pregnancy [7], according to Dr. Michel Bosnian, and 3 years ago and warn that taking antidepressants was associated with the appearance of malformations. Women who are taking antidepressant medications selective inhibitors of serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) like fluoxetine, Prozac of the multinational Eli Lilly, had twice the risk of your baby being born with a congenital abnormality. The period of greatest risk was during the second and third month of pregnancy.
In another study, the warning came even from the authority of the Food and Drug Control in the U.S., the FDA alerted doctors on the increase in birth defects in pregnant women who ate another antidepressant, paroxetine.
The antidepressant paroxetine (Paxil) the multinational Glaxo SmithKline Beecham, increased the risk of fetal cardiac malformations, they recommended that pregnant women should not be prescribed. Here too, the studies found this increased risk in women taking the drug during the first three months of pregnancy.
The U.S. regulatory agency FDA indicated that a second study on the drug showed a substantial increase in risk in the hearts of the developing fetus if administered during pregnancy. Actually this is the second paper on the effects of Paxil or any of its generic composition identical (paroxetine) have in pregnancy:

All studies agree that the greater sensitivity of fetuses occurs in early pregnancy
It is proven that this is the period when the fetus is more sensitive to radiation and chemical mutagens and generally for all poisons.
Especially for a whole category of chemical contaminants grouped as hormone disruptors, xenoestrogens or environmental estrogens such as dioxins, furans, etc…
Studies of antidepressants that have seen once again remind us that within the chemical contaminants do not forget the drugs. The case is emblematic of thalidomide. He is not alone: the case of the first hormone that marketed the pharmaceutical complex is even more instructive. It was not until a generation it became apparent that DES had caused an epidemic of vaginal cancer in daughters of mothers who took it when they were in utero.
Although it is recognized that chemical toxicity does not affect the genome, there is abundant evidence that this is not true and the most dramatic example we have in Vietnam. It's been several generations since the army of the United States committed the war crime with impunity even sprayed Agent Orange dioxins high in the country, including crops, and continue to be born deformed children.

Some researchers believe that genetic changes influenced by our environment, including food and behavior, they can be transmitted from generation to generation.

Cont'.d – it is known that much that is presented as information by those in power is actually dis-information & that there are agendas behind these dis-info ops.

Surely this is the important issue here – not me, not Monckton, but the actual issue under discussion.

& yet the responses my posts have generated have been emotional, personally derogatory of me & of Monckton, & have not confronted/engaged with several important facts which cast doubt upon the validity of the anthropogenic global warming theory/dogma, nor upon the anti-populist police-state totalitarian agendas & policies which this theory is being used to justify/implement.

This global warming meme seems to be some sort of sacred cow to which its adherents are personally attached/identified.

I have tried to point out that in such debates it is important to try to be mutually respectful, avoid ridicule & ganging up on one who disagrees, to stay issue-focused, & to try to cultivate humility & honesty & keep in mind that the facts are important – important to us all, if indeed the global warming meme is based on false/mistaken science & is being used to justify more repressive Big Brother legislation that is not in the public interest & is increasing the powers of the forming fascist world govt.

It has reminded me of school yard gangs & cliques which attack 'odd man out', less socially popular/successful kids.

I have made repeated efforts to keep the discussion respectful issue-focused.

I made a sincere effort to communicate/dialogue, & was met with ego-based cute/clever wise-cracks at my expense, & subtle, snide, quite cruel, hurtful, condescending remarks (the purpose of which seemed to be to shut me up).

If people are not interested in (find 'boring') a topic, all they have to do is just not read those comments/entries – no need to personally attack the poster.

If these are the kind of people who end up having a heavy presence here, who tend to dominate/control at least some discussion threads, then I really don't want to be a part of it.

You, Choto (& a couple of others), posted a couple of good posts which questioned anthropogenic global warming, & in the heavily negative & hostile/hurtful, intolerant climate that had developed, I appreciated that very much indeed.

As seems to be often the case, a clique of 'love & stroke' each other strong personalities might end up dominating, I guess – people who are more interested in being in the in-group, coming up with the clever put-down, & 'being right', controlling/ limiting content than in exploring a topic with an open mind & an attitude of goodwill & tolerance even for those who dare to differ with them ('depart from the party line').

The climate change debate is relevant on these pages in so much as the Nuclear cabal has used it to boost proliferation and have rested the renaissance on it as being the "clean green fix."

That said, the science that has been presented is scary. The anecdotes the deniers forward effective. The bottom line? We are increasing fossil fuel use and still hoping the majors in this industry will "phase in" alternatives. Well good luck with that!

    Apr 10, 2012

Exposure of pregnant women to organophosphate (OP) pesticides, a widely used class of pesticides in North American agriculture, may be associated with decreased gestational age and lower birth weight, according to a study published on Thursday. The new study, conducted by Vancouver-based Simon Fraser University (SFU) researchers, finds that the decrement in birth weight for OP pesticide exposure was comparable with the decrement seen for women who smoke cigarettes. This findings again raise people’s concern about the harmful effects of low-level exposures to environmental toxicants. Although the use of OPs in Canada and the U.S. has declined in recent years, exposures remain widespread.
The conclusions were made after studying a population of …

To make up the short falls, US imports increase the problems with pesticides in foods. So WE stop or limit our food supplies –letting in the non-regulated foods. Imports are "signed off" as safe due to meeting the foreign countries safety rules–not tested or protective of human safety. Money talks. Just found a recall for our pet foods. Ingredients are provided from China suppliers, and are killing pets with pesticides, melamine, plastics (looks like more protein in testing) and bacterias per the FDA. So chicken treats, dental treats, sweet potato–they are all in the "suspected" list, with recalls and FDA warnings as to safety of the animals..and the handlers of the foods. Do you think there will be a difference for HUMAN food products? Heck Chinese companies have even given Melamine to infants in their formulas. Study links dental X-rays to brain tumor risk
    By Jennifer LaRue Huget
A study published Tuesday in the American Cancer Society journal Cancer reported a link between certain kinds of dental X-rays and the most common brain tumor, one that is almost always benign but can still be debilitating.

The study found at a general level that people with meningioma were more than twice as likely as people without the brain tumor to have had a bitewing X-ray sometime in their life. For a bitewing X-ray, the patient holds the film in place by biting down on a tab.

Well maybe this is the way I will go, if it ain't one thing it's another.

And I had a thought. With manufactured austerity measures taking place around the globe & with services & medical care reduced, it will become more likely that governments will take a more Proactive approach. If you will be a burden to social programs as a result of your ill health, maybe *doctors will be putting you out of your misery.

The reason services ect. are cut is because the elite in effect do not need them. They have their own medical staff, schools, libraries & universities ect.

The *love for robots & their push in music videos ect. is so that you will accept them as normal, fun & for positive uses. Until they just keep replacing more & more of us. Do you think that governments will pay you to sit home becasue you have been replaced by a robot?

We are being brainwashed & when people wake up enough to realize you are no longer needed it will be too late. It is not just becasue there are no manufacturing jobs that there are fewer jobs. Who says that just becasue technology advances that robots should take our place? It is those that will not have to pay a you salary, or medical costs ect. or ever have to put up with unions or employees demanding a pay raise.
