I am concerned that too many don't recognize the scope of this drought. Everything about it contributes to an already taxed and troubled earth. Every habitat, including aquatic, is under extreme stress with heat and lack of moisture. Furthermore, global warming predictions say that drought prone regions will see increasing years of repeated, deepening, drought. Insufficient annual moisture accumulations will not let earth restore itself to what has been "normal".
I truly feel we in the US, especially those of us in drought affected regions, should already have shifted to extreme water conservation. But news and reports coming my way suggest that whole community populations operate without independent foresight, ("officials have not yet announced water restrictions".)
It seems we're so geared to high consumption that we're unable to think beyond daily habits. Commonly held, relatively simplistic, understandings of our economy reduce conversation of losses to whatever is thought "worthy" of being considered a "loss". Collateral or externalized losses are seldom mentioned. (The barge shipper spoke only of costs to commerce).
IMO, our limited imaginations and limited thinking do not bode well for our willingness (as whole populations) to fully analyze and appreciate costs to earth (and therefore life) of our high consumption lifestyles.
I'm likely preaching to the choir! Thanks, Heart of Rose, for the link! Helps me note wider 'conversation'.

Here is an article about droughts and nuke power plants:

Report Comment
Duly saved among my 'files' on climate/nuclear/etc matters. Thanks!
There may be an additional drought-related issue for nuclear (as if what is described in article you linked is not enough). An article I read about a week ago described home foundation stresses/cracks in the Kansas City area. This can happen with drought anywhere that clay is a significant part of subsoil mix. Clay shrinks and hardens (a lot!) the drier it gets. Foundation contractors reported high levels of contacts from homeowners on cracking foundations. City water and sewage lines were also losing "normal ground support" under pipes, etc as clay shrinks, putting them at risk to crack and break.
I wonder about n.plants! What are they built on? (We already know too many are built on fault lines!)
… Now that I think about it – non-clay heavy subsoil supports would also tend to 'sink' as normal subsoil moisture disappears …
I am flabbergasted at continuing, even increasing, human activity of earth/life destruction. It seems "the place" has been left in care of (stereotypical) irresponsible adolescents. Some are trashing the place, others engage in deadly fights; still others are digging up the backyard; fridge doors hang open, and all faucets on the property run freely!
Report Comment
@Maggie123
Sounds as though you are suggesting that ordinary householders are making the drought worse. The truth of the matter is that over consumption of water has little to do with householders–most of the water is used by agriculture, nuclear power and industry. Only about 8% is used by householders. Agricultural permits to large agribusinesses to withdraw water are routinely given. Huge farms use wasteful sprinklers and government looks the other way.
Also, why does nobody seek to determine the cause of the drought?
The situation reminds me of those seeking to "cure" cancer. Why aren't they seeking to prevent it? The causes are known. I believe the drought is being purposefully caused–it is not natural.

Another phone call from the Obama campaign. I cried, "please remember my children. Please don't kill my children." I hope they stop phoning. The latest ugly campaign slogan. Mitt Romney is going to win in Colorado by 3,000 votes. Like anyone could possibly know this today. I just kept talking about how much radiation we are facing from Fukushima and no one is warning any one about all the radiation in the food.
I also reminded her that Secretary Clinton was against nuclear energy and won the primaries, and the Democratic party gave the nomination to Obama. I won't vote to kill my children.

Hillary did sign the treaties with Japan and Canada not to test for radioactive contamination in any imported/exported food products.
She is a genocidal killer just like the rest of them. Even Ron Paul supports the nuclear industry.
We need someone to stop this madness, and it isn't anyone running now. Both parties in the US are heavily supported by the nuclear industry.

"Show says 'no' to CSG money"
26th July 2012
"THE North Coast National has decided not to accept any sponsorship money from coal seam gas companies for this year's show.
Show society president John Gibson said that last year Metgasco had contributed $15,000 in sponsorship towards the North Coast National and had asked for a sponsorship prospectus again this year.
In light of the number of people concerned about CSG, we thought until the government makes a decision, it was better for the show (not to accept the sponsorship money).
"It will be a big loss to us… To my knowledge it has never happened before and certainly not in the last 25 years."

URGENT~!~ Sign the petition to STOP the Northern Gateway pipeline in order Prevent damage to the Great Bear Rainforest and protect its fragile ecosystem.
June 14, 2012 Instead of a comprehensive list, Fisheries and Oceans Canada offered just two examples of risk assessments. Only two – out of 600 to 1,000 rivers that will be crossed by the pipeline.
“It is absolutely unacceptable for our premier to play a game of The Price is Right while putting our lands, our waters and our futures at risk to devastating oil spills,” said Terry Teegee, tribal chief of the Carrier Sekani Tribal Council.
He said the company has demonstrated "years of inadequate behaviour," highlighting the oft-cited report by U.S. investigators that describes employees' response to a calamitous leak near Michigan's Kalamazoo River in 2010 as the "Keystone Kops."
And he was critical of the company's failure to give the National Energy Board the names of the companies that will be contracted by Enbridge to get the bitumen from Alberta to Asia.
Pressure on Christy Clark is mounting — as the head of the province where the pipe will end, she has tremendous power to put the brakes on this reckless deal. Call on her to reject the Northern Gateway pipeline by signing the petition below and forward it to everyone. When we reach 50,000 signatures, it’ll be delivered straight to the meeting in Halifax.

Sea Shepherd fugitive Watson says Japan after revenge
CRIME AUG. 01, 2012
Watson, a white-haired Canadian national known as “Captain” to supporters, did not reveal his location in the message and said if extradited to Japan, he would “never be released.”
“I am presently in a place on this planet where I feel comfortable, a safe place far away from the scheming nations who have turned a blind eye to the exploitation of our oceans,” he said.
But he indicated that he would continue to harass Japanese whalers.
“I can serve my clients better at sea than in a Japanese prison cell and I intend to do just that,” he wrote, saying that Sea Shepherd would sail on its ninth campaign against Japanese harpooners in December.
Watson, who is widely known in Australia from where he annually departs on Sea Shepherd’s pursuit of Japan’s boats, has claimed credit for having seriously disrupted Tokyo’s “scientific” whaling in recent years.
“I know the whale killing poachers of Japan will continue to exploit all avenues to find a way to stop me,” Watson said. “I have, however, eluded them once again.”

While we are on the lympics discussion, I wonder what the artist, activist, the cabby aka chunkymark's got to say about this? So much for using alternative energy.
"Hydrogen-fuelled taxis, introduced in London for the Olympic Games, are being transported on a 130-mile round trip to Swindon to refuel.
The fleet of three low-emission cabs was introduced to ferry VIPs and officials during the Games.
But the hydrogen fuelling station, at Lea Interchange near the Olympic Park, has had to close for security reasons."

My preemie granddaughter has been home since Sunday night. She weighs over 5 lbs and rides around in her car seat. She still has a tube in her nose getting oxygen. Otherwise she gets too tired from eating. Also so she won't stop breathing. She saw the doctor last Mon. and goes again next Mon.

Sad for you Anne, there is nothing worse than losing or having a sick child. My daughter in Portland, had a miscarriage in early November. It would have been my first grandchild, and I blame the poison from Japan. The tears that will be spilled from this nuclear nightmare, would fill an ocean.

Mitt Romney confirms he would end US wind power subsidies
"Romney's campaign confirmed this week he wants to end long-standing tax credits for wind farm projects when the incentives come up for review later this year.
The pledge means the popular production tax credits (PTCs) – which have helped drive a surge in new wind energy investment in the US, making it the second largest wind energy market in the world after China – would be allowed to expire at the end of this year if the Republicans secure the White House in November.
Shawn McCoy, a spokesman for Romney's Iowa campaign, told the Des Moines Register earlier this week that Romney would "allow the wind credit to expire, end the stimulus boondoggles, and create a level playing field on which all sources of energy can compete on their merits". (…)
However, green groups, renewable energy industry insiders, and Democrats were all quick to point out that Romney's desire for a level playing field on energy policy does not extend to oil and gas, where he has pledged to retain up to $40bn of subsidies and tax breaks that President Obama wants to see phased out.

When one reads of ancient cultures that practice child sacrifice it is the epitome of barbaric rituals. How much worse is the use of nuclear reactors to kill off all the world's children.
