Japan utility knew of tsunami threat: government, AP, August 24, 2011:
Japan’s nuclear regulator says the operator of a damaged nuclear plant knew it might be hit by a far bigger tsunami than it was designed to withstand.
The Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency says the operator informed it just four days before Japan’s massive March 11 earthquake and tsunami that waves exceeding 10 meters (33 feet) could hit the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant. [...]

There is probably no way of knowing for sure if it was the quake, tsunami, or combination that did it. The stories have been all over the place. I dont think they even know for sure, its definately hard to know what u can believe or not when coming from the japanese goverment.I just hope they get what is coming to them, even the american and canadian goverments should be held responsible for not warning thier own people of the radiation levels and dangers. Would love to hear of some of these people being sent to prison where they belong.

Meltdowns occur because of a loss of cooling. Misitu is correct – it has been finally dribbled out that some of these six plants had pipe damage before the tsunami hit.

If you will remember, just a few days ago, information was leaked that there were pipes all over the place, it was an insave set up of pipes, pipes and more pipes !
The whistleblower said that some were so close to the buildings that they only ‘soldered’ the parts they could get to, so…. let’s say 1/4 of the pipe was not sealed.
BAD maintance leads to BAD problems down the road..
remember, the DH gives me pipeline lectures whether I want to hear them or not, often.

Remember that the workers may have manually shutdown the cooling system for Reactor #1 BEFORE the tsunami hit. Could it have survived both the quake and tsunami if this was not done? Human error may be the important factor with this disaster.

The operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant says workers may have manually shut down the No.1 reactor’s emergency cooling system in order to prevent damage to the reactor. It says pressure inside the reactor had dropped sharply after the earthquake struck the plant on March 11th. Tokyo Electric Power Company on Monday disclosed records of its operations at the plant. They show that the reactor automatically halted operations after the earthquake. The emergency cooling system was automatically activated but stopped about 10 minutes later and remained off for about 3 hours until after the tsunami arrived. TEPCO says plant workers may have manually shut down the cooling system
because pressure inside the reactor had dropped sharply from 70 to 45
atmospheres. The system is designed to cool the reactor even if all external sources of power are lost, but the move to shut it down temporarily means that it did not fully
function. TEPCO says the decision may have been made based on a manual to prevent
damage to the reactor. It says if the system had worked, it may have had more time until the meltdown, so it will investigate developments leading up to the decision to turn it off and whether the move was correct.

Probably beyond DBE. How do you design for a 8.9? However, even if DBE was 9, there is a likelihood some
multitude of things failed. Offsite power is gone for the forseeable future as the grid is down. I think the weak
link is the “median fragility of ceramic insulators in the electrical grid” NUREG CR 4910 (I have a copy from the
old days from somewhere).
With an 8.9, if a pipe support or snubber fails, pipe whip would probably cause a LOCA. EDGs must function.
With 8.9 they may not for a whole lot of reasons. I have a hard time believing we are transporting water in to a
facility on the coast. I hope the news article is wrong. I saw the story on MSNBC website and I know how
accurate their US political reporting of our beloved President is.

The earthquake that hit Japan last Friday resulted in the ground shift of 8 ft ; i.e., roughly the site PGA of
2.67g. The site experienced a peak ground acceleration that was more than 2.5 times the upgraded PGA
capacity of the Fukushima units.
In March 2008 TEPCO upgraded its estimates of likely peak ground acceleration (PGA) for Fukushima to 0
.61g, and other operators have adopted the same figure. In October 2008 TEPCO accepted 1.02g PGA as the
new seismic design basis for Kashiwazaki Kariwa, following the July 2007 earthquake there. Reportedly, the
Fukushima units were upgraded to 1.02 PGA in 2009.
By comparison, the certified designs of new reactors in the US are based on PGA of 0.3g.

Jebus > The pressure dropped because the pipes broke from the 9.0 earthquake, 8 ft ground shift, and 2.67g PGA, causing a loss of coolant. The emergency cooling kicked in and pressure did not come up. They shut down the emergency cooling so that it would not pump all the coolant out of the reactor exposing the cores. Then the tsunami hit.

Another thing to remember is you can have a 9.0 earthquake and only .5g PGA. A slow roller.
And you can have a 5.9 earthquake and a PGA of 1.0g. A short sharp quake.
There are many factors that seperate the two…

… A couple who has supervised various dorms in Fukushima Prefecture for Tokyo Electric Power Co. over about two decades considered their residents like their own children.
So, they are at a loss for words when some who continue to work at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant say things like they will never marry because of cancer fears due to the leaked radiation from the plant.
On March 11, the couple was working as supervisors …
