Am trying to find references from the period that I remember reading of at least one chopper flight into Fuku Daiichi by US military. Apparently they were seen fighting a fire (possibly Unit1). Possibly linked to clandestine weapons (or other tech) programme. Does anyone have any info on that? Thanks…

A measurement of 20 millirems of radiation exposure over 12 hours was made at Naval Base Yokosuka, not Naval Air Base Atsugi, although officials at the time recommended personnel at both locations take precautions.
Though health officials agree that’s not a harmful level in itself, it could become serious if it becomes a pattern. A 1998 U.S. Army guideline on low-level radiation set 50 cumulative millirems as a threshold at which exposed individuals should begin being monitored for harm.
From 50 to 500 millirems, one extra cancer death will occur in a population of 4,000 people, according to the Army’s data. The next threshold is 500 millirems, at which an extra cancer death will in a group of 400 people.
Though they won’t talk about specific disaster plans, base officials in Japan are trying to ease concerns among their military communities.
In Misawa, Air Force officials have repeatedly told residents they are in no danger of radiation from the failing nuclear reactors in Fukushima, which is about 240 miles south of the base.
“I am not moving my family out or secretly taking iodine pills,” Col. Michael Rothstein, the base commander, told Stars and Stripes Wednesday. “There is no threat here.”

And let's not forget how the NRC tried to run the show in Fukushima (even though they were mostly ignored). While they were busy wrangling information and sanitizing detail, they ignored what their lame modeling and spin meant for five thousand U.S. sailors. RASCAL only models out 50 miles? Well, the sailors have nothing to worry about since they're more than 50 miles out. They don't exist!
An innocent mistake? I don't think so. On one of the early transcripts, and unidentified speaker suggests putting a lead shield over the helicopter's radiation detector (the ones dumping water) so the pilots wouldn't turn back when it alarmed.
The NRC wasn't too worried about a few dead sailors, but do you think they would have risked any 'federal family' personnel to help at Fukushima? Hardly. They got assigned water pump duty, paid Betchel a zillion to 'design' the plumbing, but were damn sure not going to have any of *their* people go down and help set it up.
They expected the TEPCO guys to read some directions and put it together for themselves in their spare time. Gee… thanks for the help, NRC losers. Go home and stick to what you're good at: killing Americans.

Operators of electric companies can't deal with meltdowns. Water dropped from a helicopter dissipated into steam, and missed the target anyway. Was total panic.
As for knowing the quantities of radiation erupting from the blown reactors, seems the US military would have those measuring devices.

said awhile back Heart, the truth can be buried for only so long before it makes its way to the light. Those at the top have been suffering from the national security mindset, for so long, other than instructing their mouthpieces to ignore it, they didn't know any-other way to respond to this catastrophe. They must've made the mistake of thinking their ability to contain things in the past would apply here as well.
Quick aside but not entirely unrelated: I'm starting to see a lot of people around me coming down with serious flu conditions. I'm not sure – yet – if this is attributable to immune suppression from increased exposure to Fuku-rad-toxins or if it's just a bad year. We know the medical industry will suppress any of their internal findings, so we need to keep our eyes and ears open to this ongoing pandemic…

I think what is happening is more radiation sickness but they are covering it up with this so-called norovirus thing. (Granted, I'm not a doctor and the norovirus might sometimes be real and accurate), but I think they are using this more as a cover-story to hide the radiation sickness from people.

Aftershock, I have my first case of the flu in 15+ years. Everyone, make sure you have some Oscillococcinum or other homeopathic flu remedy on hand. Took this and it reduced symptoms down to those of a cold, with minor aches and cold-like symptoms, in a matter of hours.
Now just trying to recover from the feeling this is trying to work its way into becoming bronchitis. Hyssop tea helps a lot, too.

The far right seem to be taking ownership of the story so far. First the WSJ (owned, like Fox, by Murdoch), then the "top conservative blog" cited here, now Fox.
Something is up, but what? I continue to speculate that, after various twists and turns, this will be an attempt to revive the nuke industry. Plot synopsis: "Bad (former) Tepco management. Bad (former) foreign government. Noble navy would-be rescuers – throw them a crumb if necessary. All settled, restart the renaissance."

An alternate plot synopsis that would suit WSJ, Fox and the like: "Frivolous lawsuit dismissed. All settled, restart the nuke renaissance."
Try as I might, I can't think of a viable version of this story that matches my own preference, namely that the nuke power and weapons industries go out of business permanently.
I try things like "Tiny gallant band of victims topple nuke establishment" (yea!) but that's not the script so far – the plaintiffs just seem concerned with getting compensation for their health issues. Good for them, but that doesn't seem to have much big picture potential, except as a possible precedent along the style of the early tobacco lawsuits.
At this stage, I feel that the media storyline is herding the public in a direction that the WSJ and Fox are entirely comfortable with.

OK, if we follow the money, what does this tell us? What kind of clout do Japanese banks and industry have in other countries, and in the U.S.? Good questions, AIG. I've been trying to figure that out, too.
Could media outlets like the WSJ possibly think they will be deemed culturally irrelevant if they continue to suppress this news?

aigeezer & all, it does seem to fit with the official acknowledgement of "lack of safety culture and bad habits" on Tepcos' part.
As in – "OK, now we'll have safety culture and good habits so nuke power is safe in our hands. Of course it always was and is in the hands of those others."
"Oh yeah, and it was still the tsunami that did it."
Tepcos' responsibility is but one thread being woven into the fabric, on a loom with many weavers.
As to this US Navy personnel lawsuit, I feel like a cat on a fishboat, the butchers' dog, a worm in compost – many smells.
Should it ever come to trial…there is potential for info to come out on the specifics of radioactive atmospheric plumes relative to the ships' position and – possibly – more about who knew what when in Japan re: the plumes.
(And of course onboard implementation of decontamination protocols.)
BUT – apart from specifics re: the ship and its' personnel, are these not side issues to the inherent dangers of these plants, their siting, the geologic faults, their restarts?
Would this case, if successful for the plaintiffs, not open a floodgate of like cases fatal to Tepcos' financial and corporate existence?
At most, I expect this to be "back-paged" soon, and IF there's a trial, the conclusion a long time away, and IF "successful", to be out-of-court settled.

Yes, or-well. All your points match my sense of what is going on. The details change moment-by-moment, but the smell builds and lingers.
If this is the way of it, then there will probably be a lot of smoke and mirrors here and elsewhere before this particular story gets resolved – on top of the natural complexity and fuzziness of the situation.
Whatever lies ahead will test everyone's critical thinking skills.

This story repeats a big concern I have, namely the scapegoating of Tepco.
Or rather, the illusion that's happening.
It is… and it isn't.
In a word – distraction.
Or in two – fall guy.
We need to distinguish PROCESS from END RESULT.
Maybe Tepco will disappear.
And something like The Japanese Peoples' Nuclear Trust And Administration will run former Tepco plants, contracting out operation to a consortium of other nuke-tilities.
Whatever.
Tepco is just one criminal player.
THIS story is a "natural" for US consumption – aircraft carrier, US Navy, young Service personnel, disaster aid, lawsuit (!).
But it's a story without Big Media staying power. I'm not saying that's as it should be, just what is.
It won't acquire the heft of Agent Orange, Gulf war syndrome etc.
Trying to be positive – it may be a needed reminder and crack open a little more consciousness of Fuku, but I see it easily being COMPARTMENTALIZED in terms of media selectively covering more easily "managed" sub-issues.
I'd rather see the Japanese peoples' lawsuits being covered. I won't hold my breath for that.

or-well, I think my priority list would be something like:
1. Stop the ongoing emissions from Fukushima, Chernobyl, Hanford… who knows where else, if possible. (I fear it is not possible with any existing technology).
2. Shut down all the potential future disaster sites – every nuke plant in existence – before the next crisis gets one of them. Get the "spent fuel" to relative safety, and so forth.
3. Decommission all military nukes.
4. Identify and treat all victims to whatever extent is possible.
5. Identify, convict and punish various perps.
6. Put safeguards in place so society doesn't forget.
Some of those things could be done in parallel, of course, if society has the will to do it.
What intrigues me about the present "big news story" is that it is a little nibble of items 4/5 from my list, far far down from the most urgent priorities.
As human beings, we are potential suckers for any version of item 4, and many people are suckers for any version of item 5, even at the risk of forgetting that items 1 through 3 can destroy us all if not resolved.

Very fine priorities. Often now, I think of overarching principles that would inform and enable the implementation of such, and other priority lists dealing with our problems.
I can't avoid returning to the issue of those who would stand as roadblocks between "here" and "there".
"Identify" is such a key concept for all 6 points, and for revealing…I'll say "facts" instead of "Truth"…identifying "who we are" as opposed to who we are told we are; identifying the tendencies and susceptibilities that lead to the success of various machinations…
May I reword #6?

I can't help feeling this lawsuit story will be inconsequential as regards the big picture.

No I can see it going like many "major" governmental issues. They will announce that the "accident" of the Fuku incident was "mishandled" and a multi-governmental review board will be setup to investigate the incident and provide "go-forward" recommendations. From there news releases will slowly dwindle off over the next month until eventually you will hear practically nothing about it. A year or two later there will be a minor news announcement that the review board results have been released along with the recommendations. Tepco will be find X million dollars and be charged with the clean-up to be completed over the next x years. There MIGHT be medical payments required for the workers and US sailors included, but there will be nothing for the other millions of people that have been, and will be affected by this for generations to come.

To some extent I can sympathize with the situation, but I have the uneasy feeling that we have just peeked into an unpleasant future.

Mr. Binney stated in the first video link above:
"And under executive order 13526 sec. 1.7 governing classification, you cannot classify information just to cover up a crime. And that was signed by President Obama. Also President Bush signed an executive order, a very similar one."
Binney said the U.S. government is doing everything in its power to keep the EFF lawsuit Binney helped to put together, out of the courts.

You've got to watch the interview to understand what Binney is getting at, in terms of collecting information on everyone and all electronic communications and telecommunications. He puts it into the context of the government's attempting to classify all kinds of things to hide illegal acts.
Having heard first hand accounts of family members who survived the Nazi occupation of parts of Europe, and Soviet control of Eastern Europe, IMHO there is great cause for concern.

'Why can't the nuclear industry be more reassuring at a time like the height of the crisis at Fukushima?
I wonder if Stephen Chu, perhaps inadvertently, pointed to an answer in one of his recent speeches. Eg: he wants to "to bring computer simulation to reactor design". Chu thinks a computer model may one day actually be able to accurately model a given reactor design, so "scientists and engineers will be able to stand in the center of a virtual reactor, observing coolant flow, nuclear fuel performance, and even the reactor's response to changes in operating conditions", and after they build the reactor, they’ll find out the simulation was correct. He set up a nuke R&D Bell "lab-let" to create the capacity to do just this and funded it with stimulus money. He’s bringing "some of our nation's brightest minds to work under one roof" to get it done.
We can simulate atomic weapons and certify them to be safe to store and use yet we can't figure out what could happen in an event like this? Or is it the case that we already can? Does this event show the uninitiated that Tokyo could have been rendered uninhabitable until the cesium decayed?"

One cannot wish away the truth which is intrinsic to each and every nuke! I'm astounded by reading obituaries stating cancer was the cause of death in 2011 and 2012. Read some from Fresno, CA, which has had high gamma and beta levels over time, per EPA RadNet. Lots and lots of people are dying of cancer. How many more than before, I wonder?

Everybody covered it up & the buck stops at President Obama! Having worked for Homeland Security & the DOE, the government now fast paces this data. We are talking about "MASSIVE DIRTY BOMB ATTACK LEVELS OF NUCLEAR FALLOUT!" The President was given command of the CIVIL DEFENSE EARLY WARNING PUBLIC ALERT SYSTEM & had "4" chances to use it! Every mother, father, sister, brother of a soldier in Japan needs to call and write their representatives to demand an immediate withdrawal of all forces from the entire island of Japan, as it is "WORSE THAN A CHERNOBYL FALLOUT ZONE!" I posted a document on facebook… 110920e.pdf one of their internal GOV. ones… shows just how MUCH non-MOX type fissile PLUTONIUM was in that BIG BANG but fizzled-out type criticality EVENT !!!
The 137, 131, 132 and such that those guys on the Reagan took in are minor… when one considers that amount of PU-139, 140, 141 that they all got… it's a a death-sentance level, and even we standing in the USA… it's just a time factor for us all, really.
