Belgium has temporarily shut one of its seven nuclear power reactors on suspicion that one of its components might be cracked, the country’s atomic power regulator said Wednesday.

“We have found anomalies,” said Karina De Beule, spokesman for the ACFN, the federal agency for nuclear control.

The agency is “evaluating these anomalies, if they can cause cracks,” De Beule said

Title: Belgian nuclear authority mulls closure of two reactors
Source: AFP (via Voice of Russia)
Date: August 8, 2012

Belgium’s nuclear watchdog is mulling the closure of two of the country’s seven reactors producing electricity due to safety concerns, according to an internal document seen by AFP Wednesday.

The move comes after possible cracks were detected in the Doel 3 reactor. The vessel of the second reactor, Tihange 2, was produced by the same manufacturer, the document said.

Could be where the steam pipe connects to the reactor. Usually a piping problem. Another area is the connection at the reactor where the water from the condenser is pumped into the reactor. Thermal shock.

    Just speculating.

30 year old reactor, no surprise the vessel has some cracks.

if they found cracks, then they should x ray these, or just go ahead and shut down the racs.

Lets get out of a bad technology now

    Hello,

if you know Dutch, or if you can use google translate or something, this is the official article from FANC:http://www.fanc.fgov.be/nl/news/doel-3-foutindicaties-m-b-t-het-reactorvat/537.aspx

Anomalies are found in the steel pressure containment vessel, made by a Dutch company: Rotterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij. In Belgium there is a second unit from that company: Tihange 2. I heard on the radio that that unit will be checked thoroughly next week, during an planned offline-time.

There are probably more pcv's in the world which are built by the same company… those should be checked too (I heard about 20 possible units, Borssele in the Netherlands was named among others)

As a Belgian living about 50 km from Doel and Tihange (lucky us), I think it is time for us to close all these nuclear cookers: after 30 years of usage they can't be trusted anymore. Hopefully some politicians will pick up our concerns!

Doel 3: error indications regarding the reactor vessel

As mentioned in our post from July 26, a new analysis of the reactor using a new type of ultrasonic probes performed during the scheduled overhaul of the Doel nuclear power station 3. Although the results of these analyzes are not yet complete at this stage, it now appears already that the ultrasonic transducers on the vessel numerous indications have detected that could indicate possible cracks. As mentioned earlier, the reactor Doel 3 silent until the results are not complete. The FANC will announce his opinion after all the information received was analyzed and only begin to speculate. The closure of Purpose will until (at least) 31 August.

Electrabel has in the first place rapidly mention is made of a number of abnormal findings in the context of the ultrasonic reactor of the controls on the Purpose 3. After these findings, Electrabel decided to move to new controls, using a different type of sensors whose reliability in the past could be demonstrated. The analysis of the second set of results, additional time is required. During this time, the reactor was stopped and the fuel discharge. There is no danger for the population, workers and the environment.

Tihange 2, which will soon be shut down for the planned revision will undergo the same inspection in September 2012. Tihange 2 features a forged barrel from the same vendor from the years 70 (Rotterdam Drydock Company). The results regarding the possible implications for this vessel are scheduled for late September.

Moreover, FANC, given the recent decision to Tihange 1 ten years longer to keep it open already such an inspection required for this reactor in 2013, knowing that this is another manufacturer (Creusot).

The vessels of Doel 4 and Tihange 3 (vessels of more recent plants built by another manufacturer: Japan Steel Works) should in time according to the FANC also undergo such inspections.

The opinion of the FANC will ultimately be based on the safety assessment of the complete dossier and on the advice of its Scientific Council and will be subject to an international audit. The FANC will only be a license to provide further operation if there is any convincing arguments are provided. It is his job to ensure safe operation.

Based on the available information, this incident was provisionally classified as a Level 1 on the INES scale. If more information or new conclusions from the analysis of this incident followed, a reassessment of the INES level are implemented with a scale not be ruled out.

Oh well, apart from the nuke sites in Doel, Mol and Tihange, we have much more nuke sites within kilometers from our borders (France, Netherlands, Germany…) Belgium is the most probable country in Europe to get fried by radioactivity ;-)

hi glow in the dark.. and that reading is largely cesium.. :(
the eurdep stuff is low but the above reading is just 1 radionuclide.. i think it likely that there is some iodine in the air in london too!

i am getting heavy quick hits on the giegers..

the inspector is showing an active range on 0.07 to 0.22 mcSv/h

the rises are frequent and strong.. i had a big drop earlier to 0.05 mcSv/h and holding at 0.08 mcSv/h after this mornings high average of 0.13 mcSv/h

currently the average is 0.12 mcSv/h because of the large range and it dropped toward the end of the reading..

the isotopes can be read on eurdep across europe from london to poland.. hamburger gieger has noted a higher reading recently and has posted a graph on the rad forum..

hopefully croatia should be ok as the prevailing winds take most stuff down the med coast to turkey by-passing croatia, fortunately! imo.. so bnb should be ok! ;)

i am on the dark choclate and orange juice (south american produce) and am buying soya milk (gm free) tommorrow! if anyone can get on criirads map and could check the graphs for iodine peaks, that would be cool.. appears my ip is partially banned?? ces la vive!

3 bleedin reactors and maybe more… and has anyone told the olympic committee about this pollution?? :(

going to post the weather links but my bookmarks seem to have largely disapeared?? naughty police handler! :(

@arclight, Thanks for the interpretation. It's hard to understand different units, I can just manage about Bq/kg, cpm, mcSv :(

I might have to start waving a magic spectrometer wand in the air in the future.

"going to post the weather links but my bookmarks seem to have largely disapeared??"

Oh, that sucks!!! Think outwards mirrors surrounding your house arclight. Reflect all the bad karm back to the handler ;)
