Title: Permit given for fracking near nuclear plant

Chesapeake Energy has a permit to frack just one mile from the Beaver Valley Nuclear Power Station in Shippingport. Whether that is cause for alarm, experts can’t say.
[...]
As the fracking continues, does anyone, driller or geologist, know what really lies beneath the surface? Does the improbability of seismic activity as a result of fracking become more likely as more wells are drilled?
[...]
“Our regulations do not speak to off-site wells,” [Nuclear Regulatory Commission spokesperson Neil Sheehan] said. “Our focus is on on-site activities.”
In the past, seismic issues have been linked to injection wells, the accepted disposal system for wastewater generated from fracking. In 2011, a 4.0-magnitude earthquake was linked to activity at a Class II injection well in Youngstown, Ohio, operated by D&L Energy.
[...] because fracking is a relatively new technique, there may be aftereffects or dangers that have not yet surfaced.

“Hydraulic fracturing near a nuclear plant is probably not a concern under normal circumstance. If there is a pre-stress fault that you happen to lubricate there (with fracking solution), that is the only thing that might result in something that is (seismically) measurable.”

Going to have a earthquake right under the Nuclear facility another fukushima in the making

So that means that the analysis of earthquake potential that was part of the basis for the NRC to license the plant, is now invalid, as the earthquake risk will increase.
How can these people be so oblivious?

Hey, with today's technology, we no longer have to build them on faults, we can create the faults afterwords. Genius!

This is very similar to maji's current blog about the NRC.

Yep, NRC is as broken as any captured agency.

"because fracking is a relatively new technique, there may be aftereffects or dangers that have not yet surfaced."
But let us go ahead and endanger the aquifers and the whole water supply and then we shall see if it's a problem. (Extreme sarcasm).

And you STILL THINK THEY'RE OBVILIOUS? Pulleeze. This would not make them money hungry. Even greed has its limits, when the money has already mostly all been scarfed up… 23 Trillion by last count, since Bush. This makes them killers. There is no shortage of resources in the U.S., one of the most resourse rich places on the planet. So, why choose next door to a nuclear plant when fracking has clearly shown causality to EQ? So … one must truly begin to look to motive, and we're going to have to loose out innocense…stop saying…no, they could NEVER have MEANT this to happen!!! Really? Well, HOW DO YOU FIGURE?

Totally insane…..Fracking = shattering the subsurface structures over a wide area…latest tech allows branches to be drilled horizontaly up to 4.5km, and at multiple levels.
1+1=…?
Have a attended a lecture in which a (pro-fracking) geologist put the increased chance of subsurface seismic activity as increased by a factor of 10 (Not known if that's direct or exponential), by fracking in shale and tight formations… So I assume he was DOWNPLAYING the risk too..
It's proven that earthquake NOT tsunami knocked out cooling to FukuSteamer, which means ALL nuke plants have potential to have been under-rated (to withstand seismic activity) for the size of earthquakes that the earth can produce, and is producing on an increasing scale and frequency.

Ahumhum… Why all the panic? There is no "immediate" cause for concern for the wellbeing… Just keep on watching crap on the telly, smile (take a one of these happy pills if necessary) and let the big boys do their job.

"Spain Earthquake, Drilling Wells Linked In New Study Of Lorca Tragedy"
–
MADRID (AP) — Farmers drilling ever deeper wells over decades to water their crops likely contributed to a deadly earthquake in southern Spain last year, a new study suggests. The findings may add to concerns about the effects of new energy extraction and waste disposal technologies.
Nine people died and nearly 300 were injured when an unusually shallow magnitude-5.1 quake hit the town of Lorca on May 11, 2011. It was the country's worst quake in more than 50 years, causing millions of euros in damage to a region with an already fragile economy.

Issuing that permit is completely insane. Completely.
