Some of the people evacuated from Okuma have settled in Aizuwakamatsu, located more than 100 km from the Fukushima Daiichi plant…

Recently their son had his thyroid gland tested in a program run by the prefecture…

It says that he has a small lump or cyst, but a second exam isn’t necessary…

[Mother:] They found something, but they’re not going to do anything about it — Strange…

They said 95% of the time thyroid conditions in children develop slowly so there’s nothing to worry about…

They’ll examine him in two years and if they find something they’ll take the next step then… no need to worry, just wait and see…

[The family has] no choice but to accept the prefecture’s policy of one exam every two years and seeing how things develop…

"They found something, but they’re not going to do anything about it "

What should we expect? They will just leave us to bleedout. That's what they do, it's what they have always done, why should we expected a different action at this time?

  • The family has other options, but the question is whether they will sit back and listen to the bureaucrats from the government and the hospital or will they actually do something to save their son's life and the lives of the millions affected by this tragedy? If my son had a thyroid tumor that I knew came from Fukushima, I would not sit silently. I would do more than complain. When people actually hold the doctors and government responsible by any means necessary, then we might see some progress. A year and half after this disaster started, no one has been held accountable. All the protests and publicity haven't stopped this. Stronger action is necessary.

Doctors can't do anything about radiation. Cutting/removing can buy some people a little time, but aren't fixes.

True, but, they did not have to be there, they could have been relocated.

This would have required TPTB to admit a SNAFU, and this just can not be done.

She's assuming there will be medical care there in two years.

I doubt it. A 30 day prescription of pain pills for the affected, with no refills. If she's lucky. There is no government on earth that can afford cancer treatment for the levels of cancers we're about to see. That will all go away, other than for the very wealthy and their political employees.

American Thyroid Assn president says today's ultrasound technology is much more sensitive than used in the past

"Dr. Bryan Haugen, president-elect of the American Thyroid Association and head of endocrinology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, hadn't heard of the report before Business Insider contacted him.

Haugen agreed with the Caldicott's assessment that it is surprising for kids to "have this many nodules and cysts seen, especially this soon after the accident," and the fact that "this something that is not more widely known."

He added that ultrasound technology is much more sensitive today so cysts (i.e. small sacs of fluid) smaller than 2 centimeters don't need to be biopsied but solid nodules (i.e. clumps of cells) larger than 5 millimeters should be biopsied.

After Chernobyl, Haugen notes, radiation physicists calculated the radiation risk to children by measuring exposure and then finding out how many kids had nodules and how many had cancer. Chernobyl children were found to have a lot of solid nodules, but the Fukushima results reveal a lot more cysts so "it's a bit different."

the national thyroid societies are rallying to protect the good name of isotopes and thank you Dr. Bryan Haugen for your nearly balanced assessment..

but you forgot to mention this.. non cancer but can be VERY debilitating…

      Thyroid Nodules/Lumps and Goiter (Enlargement)

"….Some symptoms of thyroid nodules include palpitations, insomnia, weight loss, anxiety, and tremors, common in hyperthyroidism. Common hypothyroidism symptoms might include weight gain, fatigue, depression. Some people will cycle back and forth between hyperthyroid and hypothyroid symptoms. Others may have difficulty swallowing, a feeling of fullness, pain or pressure in the neck, a hoarse voice, or neck tenderness. And finally, many people have nodules wiht no obvious symptoms related to thyroid dysfunction at all…."

Ultrasound Technition quality and adequate training critical for diagnosis in cases of thyroid masses–cysts or solid tumors/masses. In the case of Japan, it was reported the people doing the tests and providing results had limited training. So….those parents need to get a REAL ultrasound diagnosis. Right now they are getting a "plug the dike fast" diagnosis..while the rats are jumping off the sinking ship…correctly said in this blog..about medical treatment in two years..may not have enuf resources left then..doctors, hospitals, medicine or funds…

@BigPic Actually "cutting" does work – unless you do not count the 70+ years of my life since I was diagnosed with papillary cancer from "X-ray treatments to the thymus gland" as a premature baby in 1942. Total thyroidectomy with associated lymph gland removal in early 60's and an ultrasound of the thyroid bed last year in March (ironically!) which was clear. BTW I'm 5' 113 lbs and carry a high bowling avg.

I've been a mostly silent ENEr since 3/11, but I do have a real problem with disinformation.

I have heard of more thyroid cancers than any other kind from co workers from the past. It struck a couple friends who were in the industry in the early days when there were much less controls.
For the government to do these first tests and then say come back in 2 years is criminal. According to the medical link below much follow up is recommended. Also interesting that radiation exposure can make this worse after detection. http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/853737-overview
