Title: Elderly Fukushima plant volunteer appeals for U.S. help
Source: Kyodo
Date: Aug. 17, 2012

A cofounder of a group of retirees who have volunteered to help contain the Fukushima nuclear crisis is seeking U.S. pressure to get the central government to act more swiftly in addressing the dangerous situation.

“The Japanese government is very sensitive to American voices,” [former technician with Sumitomo Metal Industries] Yasuteru Yamada, 73, of the Skilled Veterans Corps for Fukushima said Tuesday

[...]

“A private company can’t handle such a long-term project,” and Tepco’s cleanup plans have not adequately addressed such issues as building a permanent seawall or replacing plastic hoses with something stronger, he said.

[...]

“Fukushima No. 1 is not just an accident for Japanese people, but for you people (around the world) as well,” he said.

Sharp 2197. I apologize to you if I offended you and/or for making you feel like you needed to give me advice to calm down.

I'm a practicing Tibetan Buddhist. I have spent years, much time and energy attempting to see and understand my motivations, to realize the desire behind my actions.

I consider blogging to be a very productive training in this because of the time, the gap required before the reaction. This gives me the time to notice what I am really doing.

On several sites I have had the refputation of being the kind, compassionate one, the person who took the time to examine and understand what was happening.

The only other site where I have experienced this kind of pie-throwing flame war is GOS, Daily Kos. On that site, I have learned where to go to avoid confronting this kind of person.

I said nothing wrong that this person should have jumped all over me and told me that he/all should spit in my hand if I came asking for help. Should I have just ignored his comment? Perhaps. Should I just ignore your judgement also? I don't think so.

So I'll wait to see what explanation rambojim will give. Is that fair, Sharp? Let's both see what rambo will say!

The way I read this is every country on earth expects the US to jump in and bail them out of a jam. And I agree with him that we should not always be there to help. Some of the countries would not lift a finger to help us, in fact some would cheer when we got into a jam.

But in this case I think we need to jump in and help for two reasons.
                    1. This has the potential to change life on earth.
                    2. We are downwind of it.

So I agree that we should not help every country that gets into a jam, but this is definately not one of them, we need to jump in with both feet and do everything possible.

In conclusion I do not feel he was attacking you, he is just frustrated that we are always looked at as the country that will bail anybody out of any problem.

Just lost a long reply I wrote to you. Briefly, I appreciate your reasoned response. I do have more to say and wish I had not lost my post, but it is just too late to say what I would truly like to say here
Goodnight. Sweet dreams of a better world. Just one thing. I'm 79 years old. I went with my physics dept friends at UCBerkely during the Pacific tests; we went with geiger counters to measure the radiation on cars in the parking lots — 1950s. I wonder if rambojim was even born then?

I hosted and did the press work for the 40th anniversary Hibakusha tour in the 10 SW states in 1985. I worked with Sane/Freeze, the Mobilization for Survival, numerous Nevada test site actions. Was rambojim even alive yet?

During those actions I met Michio Kaku, Helen Caldicott, Robert Bowman, and John Gofman.

Please do not belittle me nor my credentials. Thank you for allowing my hurt and bruised explanation/rant.

I have felt very unappreciated on this site. It is true that I do not contribute as much as some others. But I am old and sick. I have COPD and emphysema, partly from living at peace camps like Nuremberg Actions at the Concord Naval Weapons Station. I was standing 8 feet from Brian Wilson when the US Navy train deliverately ran over and cut off his legs.

I could use some love, thanks and appreciation, or at least some understanding, not chastisement.

Thank you for sharing detail of where you've been, of your service along the way. I'm a few years younger, but sneaking up on you age wise. I look back on the 60's and wonder how that spirit seemed to subside even while it seemed to stay active, then recently re-emerged with new energy of strong promise, yet at the same time so fraught with tensions and accusations. I can build an informed narrative, one that reaches even farther back to generations leading to mine .. but still, at times, it's quite stunning to find where we are now.

I am pleased that you have spoken up to remind that much now being understood has, in all-too-significant manner, been understood before. The reminder in itself can serve — how many times must humanity begin to come to its senses only to "escape" again from that which we each deeply know?

Big sigh! (Big smile). Be well.

Maggie 123…Yes, many times we seem to fall back asleep, to lose the awareness again and again.

There are many people and deep thinkers who believe that what will grow out of our new awareness today, the Occupy movement, political understanding, and more will combine with what we learned in the 60s to bring an even better development. Chris Hedges, whom I deeply admire, is one of those.

As I've said here many times before, we are in an evolutionary process. Taking the "power of the stars," the power of the universe into our hands by splitting the atom, we mandated that we must evolve a consciousness, an ethical morality to match that awesome, godlike physical power.

That is the challenge. We must evolve beyond fighting with each other, beyond war. This is what I believe. Will we make it….? The answer is in the future

Thanks for you kind thoughts and words, Maggie.

A racist (?) sounding comment nonetheless, and not spoken in any spirit of cooperation. The Japanese volunteers are heroes and are unpaid for the risk they're taking. What we need now is international cooperation, not suspicion and race baiting comments.

Americans are NOT afraid. The problem lies in the corrupt government, who for the most part do not reflect what average Americans believe in…IMHO.
I think I can safely say that the government of Japan is corrupt as well and does NOT for the most part reflect the beliefs of the Japanese people.
Hell, I think I can safely say that MOST governments of any nation have pulled away from coming close to representing what their people believe and want and strive for.
That being said, I'm a big believer in doing as much as you can for yourself and family where you can, before asking for help.
But the situation at Fukushima seems to be like a stubborn father letting his children starve to death after a half hearted attempt to provide them with food, but being too proud to ask for help.
I don't have a doubt in my mind, that if Japan would ask for some help from the US and other countries, that in a matter of days there would be the help needed right there.
I for one, don't think it is fair to criticize any country for not being right there near ground zero helping with the problem, when the Japanese government refuses to let anyone else help in the first place.

@rambojim and everyone else kicking out fighting words on this post – whoa, ease up, please. Many countries around the world help others. But, the media you're reading tells you different. Just like the media tells you what it wants you to know about Fukushima. The US still occupies Japan, remember? No other foreign nation occupies Japan. The US IS over there advising at this very moment. So is Britain. Japan and China have little love for each other, which is also the case for most on rambojim's list. America spends less than 1% of it's annual gross domestic product on foreign aid and the bulk of that aid is for US military occupation of resource rich nations. Even many of the poorest countries give well above that percentage from a much smaller pot. But, since the American pot is so much bigger than everyone else's, it adds up to a lot of money. So, Americans are told they give more than anyone else. The US currently has a surplus of nuclear scientists and can spare a few. Japan's stated hope is to come out of this the "experts" at nuclear containment and remediation. Accepting help from others will foil those plans.

Could we stop calling people cowards and stay focused instead of getting so ugly? I would really appreciate it. Everyone in their right mind is afraid of nuclear power. Isn't making people better aware and rationally afraid of the dangers of nuclear power the whole point of this website? Thx.

    3) love watching people suffer and die (sadistic!)
    4) truly believe they are contributing or doing a favour by killing people lawfully

Data for the west coast of the United States, which received the Fukushima radioactive fallout 6-10 days before France, reveals that levels of radioactive iodine-131 concentration are 8-10 times higher there, the institute says.

      Rain water and tap water

According to CRIIRAD, a huge proportion of the inquiries it has received concern the risks associated with rainwater and drinking tap water.

The institute stresses that there is no risk whatsoever, even for children, of standing in the rain without protection. But consumption of rainwater as a primary source of drinking water should be avoided, particularly among children, it said.

As for tap water, underground catchments or large rivers should not present any problem. But the institute suggests that the situation of water from reservoirs that collect rainwater from one or more watersheds, such as hillside lakes, should be examined more closely.

As for watering one's garden with collected rainwater, CRIIRAD advises watering only the earth and not the leaves of vegetables, as absorption is faster and more significant on leaf surfaces than through roots…

Since July, there have routinely been 3-6 reporting stations above 50cpm. Last year, reports of 50cpm were rare at this time of year. 100cpm is considered Alert Level. All of the US has now been contaminated, and it is clearly getting worse by the day. End nuclear power. Utilities must decommission all nukes now. Peace.

"risky behaviour" = drinking milk, eating spinach, and doing intensive outdoor exercise (not to mention standing or walking in the rain)

Only in the nuclear age could these activities become "risky" and unhealthy. What a wonderful world they have given us.

By the way, above you wrote: "the usa is the largest user of depleted uranium weaponary and its likely that japan is involved with this manufacturing process not to mention other military development." I have never heard anything about Japan's potential connection to the depleted uranium weapons industry. Do you have any references to articles discussing it?

I don't have links to this issue, either, but, it is common knowledge that Japan takes Britain's used plutonium using it as MOX fuel, which, of course, was Reactor 3 at Fukushima. And, if i remember right, the US takes depleted uranium from Europe to add to our own for weapons manufacture.

The Japanese do have at least 10,000 tons of DU in inventory:

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depleted_uranium

While it was probably made at one of these US facilities:

        Quite a disturbing map.

You know I would post something about the DU you have questioned but how can I prove that it is true? No one will ever know, it's not as if the government is gonna say, "horray! We've got stash of DU bombs, come and have a look!!" So I won't post the information. But there are some information floating… that much I can say.

I can say this much!! :D
Apparently, there is a group called "Osaka group against Mihama, Ooi, Takahama NPP" (美浜・大飯・高浜原発に反対する大阪の会) and Green Action attended a meeting with Kansai Electric (KE) and KE said that they have handed over DU for free to USEC but since their connection ceased they don't know if USEC made DU bombs with it or not. So there is at least one of the connections.

The groups asked why they handed over for free and KE answered because it's unwanted *~groan~*

On the other hand, USEC denies that they've used DU from Japan to make weapon out of it and they are sure it is only used for peaceful purposes.

Maybe I should have used the proper term – DU munitions. The Japanese are listed to have 10,000 tons of DU munitions. DU is just depleted uranium. It's used in not only munitions, such as anti-tank and larger rounds, but also plates used to cover tanks and carriers, as it offers superior protection from enemy penetration.

Just imagine spending hundreds of hours in a tank completely surrounded by depleted uranium plates. Do tankers wear dosimeters? No.

The soldiers of the world have no idea of the consequences of what they are told to use. But their commanders do . . .

All NPPs produce depleted uranium. It's just left over fuel rod material that's spent. Lots to go around.

You are almost correct. We have an international treaty that requires us to invade and take over if any non-nuclear state cannot prevent any nuclear materials from a nuclear weapon state from causing harm. (paraphrasing non-proliferation treaty)

The belief in the truth of a law increases with the number of favourable instances of the law. This is a basic science principle.
The number of favourable instances of the so called low level radiation being unsafe so as to result in illth and filth and death is overwhelming. See for example the citings in ECRR 2003/2010 and confirmed by my own analysis of hard Indian data of prenuclear era compared with nuclear era. Also see Forum: Effects of Low Level Radiation,enenews.com. This is unequivocal. The concerned people who are spreading radiation in the world as in this case must be tried for crimes against all life for all time. Piercing comments!
They saw the true colour of the fascists the Nazis and fought them to victory. But die haben den falschen Schwine gschlachtet. The cold war came and went.Hydrogen bombs exploded in the atmosphere by the tens of hundreds. How many millions of children died in the world because of the true colour of the cold warriors! Then the arch enemies became sufficiently tamed that they had cups of tea in front of their children and exchanged pleasantries and a little politico. With that however the nukes had continued into Three Mile Island, Chernobyl and Fukushame. And there is still no sign of surrender to the truth. The wicked have concluded a nuke deal to litter India with thousands of megawatts of nukes. The other party the Russians are supplying nuke litter to India and the French as well may litter India with their powerless lethal poison spewers the EPRs. ECRR 2003 put the figure at 65 million who died due to nuclear activities in the nuclear era. The infant mortality count in India alone according to my analysis is around 23 million from 1945 to 1999( http://deathdealersnukes.blogspot.com/ )
Hope with life still in existence, colourful willing peace will still be dynamically achieved. Action!

          hi Rama,
I am worreid for Indian people because the country is separated into wealthy/educated vs poor/uninformed that yes they will take any old rubbish to turn into gold eg old computer parts to extract gold, they bought contaminated aluminium from Russia, now Japan is selling nuclear to India and the country is contaminated with Co60.
We have many Indian people lives in the UK so naturally there are lots of Indian products as well as spices, curry is supposed to be the nation's favourite food. So the contamination just circulate around the world via different routes. I am concerned about the future of nuclear situation in India as well as China very much.

I think, to convince people in India that nuclear is really bad move, we must spread the facts to asians in the UK and US so that they will inform the facts to the relatives in India, Pakistan. I have a feeling they are less inclinde to accept the facts from outsiders.
I think you are the only asian, that I have come across, keeping up with the nuclear problem. I guess India is no different, many people are just interested in making money or playing games?

What a giant sledgehammer effect producing advice. Thanks. I do hope that the Love and Rayleigh waves generated by the surge waves will travel via the Asians to the rels in India and Pak and Srilanka and Nepal…Somehow it must reach. I am sad to note that I am the lone Indian with this trait!

Watch it grow :) You don't have to lecture anyone with the nuclear physics. There will be time that you have to explain to people why the way you make your choices and I just say "it's because it is radioactive." That's all there is. I am expressing my choice and people may wonder, may be they don't.
              All the best!

Now, that may very, very well be true, which means it would then be as it is now with the hottest spots contained for short periods of time, fires, flare ups, earthquakes and entropy toppling more structures, continued leaks…and eventually only in the media when something dramatic happens.

Thx for the post heart of the Rose. The biggest obstacle is probably the territoriality issue of who owns what, who does what, who gets credit, who pays? That's going on in one room and is the deal breaker. In the other room are the engineers, physicists and technicians sharing information and coming up with a group plan they all like and will have the greatest chance of being effective, then, the other group in the other room will send someone over and say that the plan is too industrious or can't be agreed on so design something less effective and smaller, and the engineers will do this, unhappily, and then send it over to the other group- the deciders in the other room – and…

“Fukushima No. 1 is not just an accident for Japanese people, but for you people (around the world) as well,” he said.

Yes, but it did happen in your front yard. The Japanese Government should, in a very public forum, request help from all comers. Once they tell everyone what has actualy happened, people could put great pressure on governments to act. All governments.
