Scientists from Tokyo Institute of Technology, Univ. of California San Diego & Kyushu Univ., made available Oct 16, 2014 (emphasis added):

  • We estimated a lower limit of 5.2 × 1021 slow neutrons m–2 sec–1 [m–2 sec–1 = per sq. meter per second] were emitted from the nuclear fuel rods to the sea water injected in the reactors
  • Priyadarshi et al. (2011) have estimated a release amount of 4 × 1011 slow neutrons m–2. The large difference with our estimation [13,000,000,000 times higher] comes from the intrinsic limit of the box model study by Priyadarshi et al.
  • Our model directly estimates the amount of material released from the reactor core
  • The estimated… number of neutron represent a lower limit of the amount of radiation emitted from the nuclear reactors… These values can be used as a proxy to the total amount of radiation emitted since the melt down
  • [The authors] express their gratitude to… the Japanese Ministry of Environment…Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, and Technology (MEXT)… [and] the Cabinet Office

Priyadarshi et al.: Evidence of neutron leakage at the Fukushima nuclear plantDespite the obvious implication for human health… there are no quantitative estimates of the neutron flux leakage… [T]ons of seawater were used as a coolant… A consequence is that salts and minerals present in seawater become radioactive by reaction with thermal neutrons… We calculated the total number of neutrons that leaked from the reactor core [and] estimate that a total of 4 × 1011 neutrons per m2 were released before March 20.

Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Coordination: Neutron radiation is a kind of ionizing radiation which consists of free neutrons… Neutrons readily pass through most material, but interact enough to cause biological damage. Neutron radiation is considered to be the most severe and dangerous radiation available. Neutrons can travel great distances

    GMI has hit Japan:

    • Japan has been in constant economic recession for more than 20 years now. It's gone way to the right of politics, as usually happens in these circumstances, and the latest prime minister, Abe, has been very belligerant towards China.

The economic mess that is Japan, and the wider mess that is Fukushima, is a direct result of 30 years of neo-liberalism. Fukushima is how the neo-cons handle things. Compare that to Chernobyl in 1986, and how those big, bad communists threw the entire resources of a nation at what was a much lesser problem than Fukushima.

Rob, Abe is apparently not just "the latest Prime Minister" at all. He was P.M. before and (according to journalist Yoichi Shimatsu) personally responsible for bringing (at that time) illegal MOX fuel into Japan from the Cheney cabal in Texas. His grandfather was also (as per Shimatsu) a notorious war criminal during WWII who wrongfully escaped conviction as such, but was responsible for atrocities against the Chinese.

People do not always follow in their forebearers' footsteps, but Shimatsu marks Abe as an entrenched militarist.

Since Japan (along with Germany) was internationally barred from military build-up following WWII, the move now is apparently to justify such as "defensive" against China. Meaning that provocations, false flags and the like would hardly be off limits.

But coming from Abe, it may be just what is expected — dangerous yes, but not a surprise.

Why must we tell the nuclear regulatory agencies and the nuclear industry in general "what to do"? Is it not hard enough to oppose them conceptually without telling them what to do operationally? TEPCO is the classic example. People all over the world offered advice directly and honestly and what method did they choose but to try to freeze what is intrinsically hot water. Not a good choice of methods as their children would later point out. A great deal of taxpayer money was spent without much progress in stopping the leaks. By the time the world realizes that this may be the largest problem that the world has, it may be too late. Humans have always been slow learners and throughout history and herstory, this may have served us well. Will our luck hold yet again – stay tuned.

You can throw out that SP500 lotion and sun-glasses. Why mess around with expensive chemicals that people just resent. Go for the big solution and I don't mean dilution. • It is obvious that ash from volcanoes 'cools' the planet.

But the extension of that logic is that volcanoes are 'cooling' the planet and that global warming does not exist, correct?

Despite the 'cooling' of volcano ash, the Earth is still warming up, at an accelerated pace.

Scientists are looking at setting off nukes under a super volcano to cancel out the global warming and cool of the planet.

This is where that logic leads… set off a nuke to help the globe cool off, inside of a super volcano, which then creates an artificial/natural ice age for at least a few years.

What could go wrong with that?

Some of FD-NPP's neutrons may be coming from USA made MOX (unit 3#..remember that explosion?)
"It sounded like a good idea back in 2000. Two decades after the Cold War ended, the United States and Russia each agreed to dispose of 34 metric tons of weapons-grade plutonium — enough for about 20,000 warheads — by combining most of it with uranium to create mixed-oxide (MOX) fuel for commercial nuclear reactors. Proponents boasted it was a modern-day fulfillment of the biblical call for nations to "beat their swords into plowshares and spears into pruning hooks."…

"Given the MOX project requires about $800 million annually, MOX boosters will be looking to squeeze more out of the upcoming federal budget. Even if they succeed, however, there's another major sticking point: There's no market for MOX fuel, which is far more expensive than conventional uranium fuel. U.S. reactors would require modifications and security upgrades to handle the fuel, and the program lost its only customer, Duke Energy, in late 2008. Since then, no other utility has signed up, despite the DOE's offer of generous subsidies."

The "adjusted" figures keep rolling in. The authorities [sic] are counting on public apathy and they are correct in that assumption. As George Carlin once said, "Nobody seems to notice. Nobody cares."

We notice and we care, but there aren't enough of us to make our voices heard. Most people are either more concerned about the latest iPhone update or are struggling with personal crises.

I tried to talk to two acquaintances about the health dangers of both cell tower proliferation and the nuclear radiation coming from Fukushima. They had blank looks on their faces and brushed off my concerns with pap like "We're living longer, so we eventually get cancer" and "Just as many people got cancer long ago, but they didn't know what it was." Wrong on both counts, but they remain convinced that all is well and I'm sure they think I'm a paranoid alarmist.

A previous article here cited the teaching of sixth graders in Japan that "Cancer is just an expectable part of life." Here in the U.S., the NIH says that cancer is "over-diagnosed and over-treated."

People actually do notice if it turned out that they or their loved ones are sick. But connecting the dots may not follow even then. When there was a huge upsurge in cancers in the eighties due to bomb tests in the sixties, it was all turned into "the war against cancer" with little mention of radiation at all, except how it is used to CURE cancer, with no citing of the recidivism rate on that.

People also get addicted to convenience. They will use their cell phones UNTIL something alarming comes right into their own face. They think that illness is just like lotto — some positive or negative act of chance.

The public apathy is obviously a huge problem. But unclear that anything changes unless and until some very big "everything" changes, like a major societal crisis.

But keep talking to people. It's the least we can do.

    Report comment

      'Protection'

"Exposure to free neutrons can be hazardous, since the interaction of neutrons with molecules in the body can cause disruption to molecules and atoms, and can also cause reactions that give rise to other forms of radiation (such as protons). The normal precautions of radiation protection apply: Avoid exposure, stay as far from the source as possible, and keep exposure time to a minimum. Some particular thought must be given to how to protect from neutron exposure, however. For other types of radiation, e.g. alpha particles, beta particles, or gamma rays, material of a high atomic number and with high density make for good shielding; frequently, lead is used. However, this approach will not work with neutrons, since the absorption of neutrons does not increase straightforwardly with atomic number, as it does with alpha, beta, and gamma radiation. Instead one needs to look at the particular interactions neutrons have with matter (see the section on detection above). For example, hydrogen-rich materials are often used to shield against neutrons, since ordinary hydrogen both scatters and slows neutrons. This often means that simple concrete blocks or even paraffin-loaded plastic blocks afford better protection from neutrons than do far more dense materials. After slowing, neutrons may then be absorbed with an isotope that has high affinity for slow neutrons without causing secondary capture radiation, such as lithium-6…" Continued

        'Medical therapies'

"Because neutron radiation is both penetrating and ionizing, it can be exploited for medical treatments. Neutron radiation can have the unfortunate side-effect of leaving the affected area radioactive, however. Neutron tomography is therefore not a viable medical application.

Fast neutron therapy utilizes high energy neutrons typically greater than 20 MeV to treat cancer. Radiation therapy of cancers is based upon the biological response of cells to ionizing radiation. If radiation is delivered in small sessions to damage cancerous areas, normal tissue will have time to repair itself, while tumor cells often cannot.[79] Neutron radiation can deliver energy to a cancerous region at a rate an order of magnitude larger than gamma radiation.."

"…Free neutrons are unstable, having a mean lifetime of just under 15 minutes (881.5±1.5 s) from a radioactive decay known as beta decay…"
        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neutron#Fission_energy_neutrons

It is not easy to understand but you need neutrons to create fission. Neutrons can fracture elements or be absorbed by elements. Technically has neutral properties but very destructive either by energizing (ionizing) any element it hits making it radioactive like all elements in seawater or can destroy human cell structure. Ya need to wear a different suit to stop neutrons and you don't need a sustained chain reaction to create neutrons just a reaction.

razzz, thank you very much for that explanation, even though I only comprehend it partially. "…People tend to just lump everything into one category. Yet there are distinctive forms of inflation outside of the hyperinflation that is the collapse in confidence in government. I have desperately tried to explain that the very concept of hyperinflation as touted by so many pretend analysts is just wrong. This type of inflation has NEVER taken place within a core economy, which collapses from deflation. As taxes rose in Rome, people just walked away from their property and left the city. The courts became corrupt as we have today and only rule in favor of the government. Once that happens, we lose all rights and that begins the economic decline for there is not true ownership. Solitary neutrons don't travel far as they are easily absorbed. If solitary neutrons resisted absorption, there would be no nuclear problem as the neutron is the fundamental particle of chain reactions. Neutrons can travel far and wide within the nucleus of various radionuclide atoms. Neutrons are active decay particles. They are not discussed much as Geiger counters do not detect them. In fact they are difficult to detect but are considered to be ionizing radiation so they do have adverse health consequences.
