Fukushima Risks Chernobyl ‘Dead Zone’, Bloomberg by Yuriy Humber and Stuart Biggs, May 30, 2011:

Radioactive soil in pockets of areas near Japan’s crippled nuclear plant have reached the same level as Chernobyl, where a “dead zone” remains 25 years after the reactor in the former Soviet Union exploded. [...]

Soil samples showed one site with radiation from Cesium-137 exceeding 5 million becquerels per square meter about 25 kilometers to the northwest of the Fukushima plant, according to Kawata’s study. Five more sites about 30 kilometers from Dai- Ichi showed radiation exceeding 1.48 million becquerels per square meter. [...]

How dead is a “dead zone”?

I dont think you will be able to compare the two sites as Chernobyl is way less virulent than Fuky. initially in Chernobyl trees died, most of the cleaners died (people who went in to decon, which they evenutally gave up trying to do after bankrupting the country), the people who built the sarcaphagous are all dead, 100,000. There were thousands of cancers in the zone folks and birth defects to the children. Then the count for cancers world wide from Chernobyl is a million and counting. So take that to the power of 10 and you have Fuky. You can go to you tube and google chernobyl dead zone, cleaners, birth defects, etc and find lots of interesting videos. Also there you will find a three part about how the animals are taking over the dead zone. So in chernobyl, because of the sarcophagus, the wildlife have been able to reclaim the area and survive…. only because of the sarcophagus though… which we dont have even a hint of for Fuky. And the cover on the Chernobyl mess is deteriorating and may crumble soon, which means all bets are off and rad will start spewing out again. oh the joys of nuclear power.

The animals may be able to go back into the area, but they can still have tons of birth defects, shorter life spans, and pass that radiation off to humans or other animals if they are eaten.

I just wonder as there is a overwhelming component of negligence in the situation starting back at the plant site selection process where relevant prudent facts were willfully ignored despite the dangers to innocent victims if the risk taking failed.

The US Supreme Court just set a precedent about class action suits against corporations in the Bank of America case. In a 5-4 decision they barred the class from due process by stating class litigants must go separately into arbitration pre-selected by the bank and could be denied a court hearing based on pre-existing arbitration clauses.

In effect, the cost, time and burden of proof would be very high hurdles for individual litigants to meet and the damages lower. Without collective suits, more reputable firms or lawyers couldn’t take these cases. Without class action punitive and treble damages that effectively change corporate policy would not apply.

The Free Trade agreements and WTO also have clauses Internationally which make it hard and there’s no political will – except for “tort reform” or the opposite. The SCOTUS, Executive, Legislative branches and media have never been more unbalanced and pro-corporate in our nation’s history. So, they’re all scoffing the Constitition, Bill of Rights, Rule of Law, enforcement, regulation, precedent and tradition in matters like this.

Miracles can happen overnight in Fukushima, Japan. In a report released Earlier today: May 29th 2011. (By Nhk), Cooling systems in all of reactors 1-4, have been restored. “As another cooling system breakdown occured on the fukushima daichii reactor 5″… yet again a miracle for the eye to see, as NHK Has also reported only 5 hours later that tepco has also repaired function to the reactor 5 cooling systems as well…

      Lets see how miracles unfold…

Now in another report issued on May 27th, article headlines read: USA Nuclear industry was fortunante that the BP oil disaster happened – “It Helped shape communication strategy for the current crisis at fukushima”… I.E. Press Coverage…

      Lets also include our other great news articles: NRC Commissioner citing that a : 50mile evacuation zone in fukushima was very conservative (May25th 2011)” Crippled Nuke Plant not prepared for heavy rain, and wind, (kyodo News, May 28th 2011);

There is a serious message being sent to us here. The Japanese economy has now crashed completely. Japan will not recover. As they say: “all bets are off”…

Let me explain how we can infer that…

      “Tepco” to date has contaminated 25% or more of the mainisland island of Japan; “Oceanic” life is forever tainted in areas that the government has refused, to allow independant measurments in; More importantly Countries globally are worried about the implications on international buisness relations in which Japanese exports are now contaminated with growing levels of radiation as exports are expected to be cut internationally by 50% or more. This in addition to the destruction of recent earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, and hurricanes which have interupted daily business;

Japan’s holding on to the edge of the cliff by its finger nails.

What the Japanese are now realizing is that embaresing its face…

TEPCO: High Radiation Level at No.2 Reactor of Fukushima Nuclear Plant Detected
The amount of radioactive material detected around reactor No. 2 at the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant increased drastically over the weekend.
TEPCO, the operator of the plant, says it detected levels of radioactive Iodine 131 that were 130 times the legal limit on Friday, BUT levels 600 times the limit were detected on Saturday.
Since Iodine has a half life of 8 days this announcement shows radioactive materials are still leaking from the reactors.
Meanwhile, as heavy rain and strong winds are expected to hit Japan this week, fears are rising that contaminated water could be carried into the air and sea.
And as the Typhoon season is coming to Asia soon, Korea is becoming increasingly concerned about the possible spread of radiation from Japan.

            MAY 30, 2011

This goes completely against the reactors cooling systems being repaired…

Radiation cant be leaking and submerged, unless there is a china syndrome taking place…

            Hmmm…

Cause all the fuel is in the spent fuel pools… Or in the reactor hot seats…

And according to the news the pools are all not boiling… so according to this article. Radiation is being released from the reactors… Which aren’t being cooled… And they melted through all the containments… Sooo the high radiation? Its coming from a… Oh No… ! Oh Oh MY GOD…!

China syndrome Is the only explainable theory in my mind… Hence why…

            E. Ever see fog in a hurricane? cause I cant see the cam…

Work suspended at Fukushima plant due to hard rain

The operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant has suspended some of its outdoor work due to heavy rain and strong winds caused by a tropical storm.

Tokyo Electric Power Company says it is watching closely to ensure that contaminated water in reactor buildings and elsewhere do not flow outside as the water levels have been rising because of the rain.

It has been raining since Sunday in the areas around the Fukushima plant.

The utility has stopped spraying chemicals to prevent radioactive dust from spreading. It is also considering suspending work to remove debris.

It has piled up sandbags to prevent rain from getting inside electrical facility buildings to ensure the reactor cooling systems continue to function.

TEPCO has also secured a giant storage barge that was deployed to contain contaminated water to a quay.

A tropical storm, downgraded from a typhoon, is bringing heavy rain across a large area from western to eastern Japan.

The Meteorological Agency is calling for caution against mudslides.

The agency says the typhoon changed to a tropical storm around 3 PM on Sunday, after passing near southern Kyushu and reaching waters south of Shikoku.

Wet air from the south continues to blow into the front that stretches along the southern coasts of western and eastern Japan, causing heavy rain in the Shikoku, Kinki and Tokai regions.

Some parts of western Japan have had up to 250 millimeters of rainfall in the past 24 hours, heightening the risk of landslides.

Winds of up to 117 kilometers per hour were observed in Okayama Prefecture.

Wet air from the south is expected to hit cold air from the north above Honshu through Monday, and some parts of western and eastern Japan will have 50 to 70 millimeters of rainfall per hour. Heavy rain is also likely along the Pacific coast of the Tohoku region.

Gusts of up to 90 kilometers per hour are expected along the Pacific coast of western Japan through Monday. Waves will top 6 meters on the Pacific coast of eastern and western Japan as well as the Tohoku region.

Quake-hit areas have become vulnerable to mudslides and floods due to the loosening of the ground.

The agency is warning of possible flooding in low-lying areas, overflowing rivers, strong winds and high waves.

Dairy farmers have begun moving cows out of a village in the evacuation zone for the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident.

The move came after radiation levels in raw milk from Iitate Village and part of Kawamata Town cleared the government’s safety standards. A ban on the shipment of raw milk was lifted last Wednesday on the condition that these cows are kept outside the evacuation zone.

        Excerpt:
Sievert is a subjective measure of radiation dose based on the Gray, a Joule of energy delivered to a kilogramme of tissue. Note that a radioactive element (the radionuclide being Plutonium 239 or Radium 226 (mining uranium or in a coal fired plant, the flyash)) lodged in a living cell may deliver (5000000 to 6000000)x10^-19 Wattseconds(Joules) in 10^-17 seconds(Ref 2) to a DNA molecule in a cell weighing 512×10^-15 kg. The dose to the cell then is about 1000 mSv. The dose to the DNA weighing much less is much much more (a million times or so)! The dose to the cell is delivered at the rate of 50-60 KW or at a power surge of average muscle power of more than a thousand people! What the ECRR is recommending is that nukes should not deliver a dose of more than that corresponding to a 5 W-6W hit to a single cell. Since there are hundreds of thousands of DNAs in a single cell, the hit should not be more than say 5-6 megawatts(MW) or equivalent to those delivered by a hundred thousand musclemen to a single DNA! And the ICRP says 5 mSv or 50 times the ECRR’s dose or 250-360 Megawatts( equivalent to the power of 5 million muscle men to a single DNA or 25% of the 1200 MW at Tarapur ) causes an unmeasurable effect! Surely stop this madness!

This disaster has two dead zones to deal with.

    1. the dead land zone
The same variables as Chernobyl; the disseminating of radiation coming from rain, snow, runoff, wind, living organisms absorbing and transporting, birds, animals, etc.

    2. the dead water zone
This is much worse than Chernobyl. The ocean is in constant motion; tides, waves, fish, food chain dissemination, absorption and dispersion of radiation.

Dual dead zones, with two different sets of concerns, are far more likely than a single dead zone.

In dealing with these kinds of issues for the next 1,000 years at least, complexity is an understatement.

Here’s a question. WHY are commercial airlines still flying passenger planes straight over the top of Fukushima??? In fact they’ve been taking this path from the beginning. Why don’t they fly well behind it? This jeopardizing of their passengers health just so that they can save money on gas (if that’s the reason) in unconscionable.

Here are two flight paths which my family recently took. The first from LAX in Los Angeles to Hong Kong, and the reverse on the flight back.

This needs investigation. I very much doubt that passengers know what they are flying through.

By the way, the green line is the path as tracked by this tracking technology. The blue dotted line is the path that the airline, in this case Cathay Pacific, logged as their intended path.

    Again, WHY?

Don’t think they have much choice if disaster as bad as we all think if they don’t raise the limit they are effectively legislating no work be done to fix problem.

Can’t just walk away if only for the bad PR.

Sure is messed up though should be the death of nuclear industry everywhere but its not thanks to complicit cover-up of all governments. What a bunch of A**holes!

Obama has or will approve continued use of similar reactors in US some over fault lines. Just cause he’s black and has a nice smile doesn’t make him much different then Kan. Isn’t Japan a free and democratic society? Morbidly interesting to see the cover-up and lies, like a bad science fiction movie with Dr. Evil heading up dark crime syndicate. Where is Superman?

In today’s press conference both secretary’s that gave the presentations were questioned about their thoughts in relation to the poll of the Japanese people in which 80% of the people polled distrusted the govt and it’s handling of the Fukushima disaster. Talk about dodge ball.

“The poll conducted by Fuji Television Network also found that nearly 85 percent of respondents said the utility that operates the stricken Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant is dealing with the crisis poorly.

    http://www.forbes.com/feeds/ap/2011/05/30/general-as-japan-earthquake-poll_8490855.html

So does anyone have a guess as to what a poll in the US would say?

5% Think radiation is good for you.

5% Think there is no problem in Japan.

    20% Know nothing.

    70% Don’t care.

People must get really jiggity and start bombarding the US govt and those other place that were doing the animations with questions as to why they are covering up the truth and WHY THEY ARE DOING NOTHING TO PROTECT THE PEOPLE OF AMERICA and other countries. People should demand the truth from them.

Please start writing, calling, and e-mailing those agencies that are supposed to protect the people. Same with your congress critters and senate toads. Call them, fax them, write letters and email them all and make as much noise as you can. it is downright CRIMINAL for this COVER-UP to continue. This is a disaster that is far beyond comparison to anything else and it is getting worse every day.

Reminder to all who suggested we sue TEPCO, the gov’t, etc. for causing us harm and giving us cancer, it probably will not win in court! There were 2 big U.S. Supreme Court rulings in 2011:

    1. No more class action suits!! Scalia writing for court’s majority that companies (like utilities operators) can enforce contracts that bar consumers and employees from banding together to bring class action suits. See summary http://www.npr.org/2011/04/28/135785797/supreme-court-imposes-limits-on-class-actions . You think PG&E Smart Meters are bad? Nuclear is death? Too bad.

    2. Supreme Ct/ Scalia also ruled that federal law shields vaccine makers from product-liability lawsuits in state court seeking damages for a child’s injuries or death from a vaccine’s side effects. See http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/02/22/us-pharma-vaccines-lawsuit-idUSTRE71L41420110222 .

I’m too lazy to check it out right now but Tepco, or an expert recently stated that Reactor 1 started to meltdown in response to damage caused by the earthquake, NOT the tsunami. If so, then it’s reasonable to assume that ALL reactors in that area may have suffered serious damage. Of course, they wouldn’t want to admit to that because people might panic.

  • Nuclear sector growth cools down

    By FT reporters

    Published: May 30 2011 19:33 | Last updated: May 30 2011 19:33

As the shock and fear created by the crisis at the Fukushima reactors have faded, its effect on nuclear power worldwide has become clearer: growth will be slowed, but not stopped.

Countries that were already sceptical about nuclear power, such as Germany, have had their doubts confirmed. A few, including Italy and Switzerland, have moved away from plans for new reactors. In others, such as the US and India, government support for nuclear power has faced increasingly vocal criticism.

  • Oil found leaking near sea close to crippled Fukushima nuke plant

TOKYO (Kyodo) — Oil has been found leaking into the sea near the crisis-hit Fukushima nuclear power plant, possibly from nearby oil tanks that may have been damaged in the March earthquake and tsunami, the plant operator said Tuesday, adding that it will set up oil fences to prevent the liquid from spreading into the Pacific Ocean.

The oil slick was found at 8 a.m. by Tokyo Electric Power Co. workers who were patrolling the premises of the plant on the Pacific coast, and is believed to be spreading at a 200-300 meter range inside breakwaters.
