Title:Sellafield nuclear waste storage is ‘intolerable risk’
Source: BBC News
Date: 7 November 2012
h/t Anonymous tip
An “intolerable risk” is being posed by hazardous waste stored in run-down buildings at Sellafield nuclear plant, a watchdog has found.
The National Audit Office (NAO) [...] concluded that over the five decades it was open, operators failed to plan how to dispose of the radioactive waste and some of the older facilities have “deteriorated so much that their contents pose significant risks to people and the environment”. [...]
Margaret Hodge, who chairs the public accounts committee, said: [...] “Hazardous radioactive waste is housed in buildings which pose ‘intolerable risks to people and the environment’. [...]
Dr Ruth Balogh, of West Cumbria and North Lakes Friends of the Earth [said] “We shouldn’t build any new nuclear reactors if we can’t deal with the radioactive mess that’s already been created.”

ONE RESPONSE–
That doesnt make sense “allows them time to get backup systems ready”
Sheesh, if its a backup system, it ought to be ready 24/7
I heard your EDGs don’t get tested under load and operating the actual emergency circuits they would need to operate in practice. Please comment on this.

Just last week Sellafield delivered a load of MOX (recycled German plutonium) for the NPP Grohnde in northern Germany.
We need to shut down all the cancer factories.

PARIS, Nov 7 (Reuters) – EDF’s 1,300-MW Penly 1 nuclear reactor stopped in an unplanned outage at 1450 GMT on Wednesday, France’s power grid RTE said on its website.
RTE did not give a cause or a restart date.

Thanks arc! Last week Cattenom's director had to admit that their clunker tripped into emergency shutdown twice as often over the past 4 years than EDF reported!

For various reasons, I have dark chocolate at hand any time…

"Intolerable Risk" applies to every reactor in the world. Each is a time-bomb, train-wreck, ready to happen.

"An “intolerable risk” is being posed by hazardous waste…. And it is true in the U.S. as well. They have no place for it to go and some plants are almost filled up with nuclear waste.

@ 53north. I'm so sorry for your dad, not only his challenges to become healthy once more, but, what it did to him to see sometimes what others were doing. There are others like him who have stories that would make our jaws drop. Wouldn't it be a kindness if there were a support group for those who saw such things and worked in such conditions? They probably wouldn't feel comfortable telling the whole world, but, they could at least share their experiences with others in the group ad not feel alone. I hope the doctors are taking into consideration the materials he was exposed to back in the 80's that could wreak havoc on his immune system now.

Margaret Hodge did not mince her words in the report. Not just 'intolerable risk' but 'intolerable risk to people and the environment'.
If intolerable for the people of Cumbria, why has the UK government facilitated the takeover of the Horizon nuclear facility in Anglesea by Hitachi/GE, a facility abandoned by the German investors? Because of the company's outstanding safety record? Or because there are no jobs in Anglesea?
And why did none of the press reports in the UK on the takeover mention the link between Hitachi and GE? Has GE had some adverse press coverage recently?
The UK government is playing high stakes roulette with its energy policy. The poor people of Fukushima know what it is like to lose.

Britain’s nuclear push may stall as risks mount -Reuters
“To put money into UK nuclear would be crazy,” said Dominic Nash, a utilities analysts at London-based investment bank Liberum Capital.
Energy Fair, a research group of energy economists opposed to nuclear, said in a report last month that the true cost of nuclear could even be over 200 pounds per MWh once “hidden subsidies” are taken into account.

Nuclear waste to burn at Sellafield?
MARK LEFTLY
SUNDAY 01 JULY 2012
GE Hitachi is poised to hand nuclear authorities a report that the US-Japanese joint venture believes will prove that Britain can solve its 100-tonne plutonium waste problem by burning it.
The UK’s stockpile is the biggest civil waste deposit in the world, and the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), which is responsible for cleaning it up, had planned to convert the plutonium into fuel for other reactors.
However, GE Hitachi will say in a feasibility study to be handed to the NDA in the next two weeks that its Prism fast-reactor design could eliminate the waste, with the bonus of producing low-carbon electricity. The group wants to build a plant at Sellafield in Cumbria, and has agreed to submit a study to the NDA, which has previously been sceptical over fast-reactor technology.

Hammerfest LNG set sails for Japan via Arctic route with 2 nuclear ice breakers -norway (escorted by russian nuclear icebreakers, nuclear free norway? if the money is right, maybe not?)
By
Thomas Nilsen
November 06, 2012
When the tanker makes port call in Japan in less than two weeks’ time, her LNG cargo is highly appreciated by energy companies. In the wake of the Fukushima disaster in March 2011, Japan is in nearly desperate need for energy sources to replace nuclear power. So far, only two reactors have been restarted after all of Japan’s plants were shut down for stress tests after Fukushima. Anti-nuclear movements have good times in Japan.
The LNG-tanker will be escorted by Russian nuclear powered icebreakers for most of the route along the north coast of Siberia. The 2012 season for sailing the route will be historical for two reasons; never before has the sailing season been so long – and never before has so much cargo been shipped along the route.

Russia’s Arctic national park will be cleaned for €37 million
In a study published earlier this week in the Marine Pollution Bulletin, marine biologist and deep-sea expert at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research Dr. Melanie Bergmann, examined 2100 photographs of the Arctic seafloor at a depth of around 2500 meters in the Fram Strait between Greenland and Svalbard.
The quantities of waste observed are even higher than those found in a deep-sea canyon near the Portuguese capital Lisbon.

…she suspects that the shrinking and thinning of the Arctic sea ice may play an important role. “Ship traffic has increased enormously since the ice cover has been continuously shrinking and getting thinner.

hmmm..arclight, a case where global warming and sea ice melt leads to greater use of hydrocarbons which increases global warming and sea ice melt. The USA, Russia ad Japan and some European countries are already placing claims for the seafloor mineral extraction rights once all the ice melts enough. So, i don't think we'll see that industry admitting to global warming anytime soon and i fully expect them to continue to spend billions in spin campaigns every year to confuse the public about the actual global warming science. Remember the "Warming Earth" campaign back in the 1990's when they still admitted to global warming and tried to fob it off as a good thing? Big, big, bucks the likes they haven't seen in a long time if they can keep people from worrying about a warming earth.

As shown in this link I previously posted, Hitachi-GE Nuclear Energy is a subsidiary of Hitachi. Hmmm.
(excerpt)
Hitachi will use its Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR) that it can offer through its joint venture arrangements with General Electric. The subsidiary Hitachi-GE Nuclear Energy will manage the engineering and manufacturing of the Horizon ABWRs while three engineering firms have signed memorandums of understanding with Hitachi to explore cooperation: Rolls-Royce, Babcock International and SNC-Lavalin.
