After Fukushima: families on the edge of meltdown […]

‘Each anniversary we will be thinking, “Is this the year one of our daughters will get sick?”’ Kenji and Aiko Nomura with Sakura, 3, and 15-month-old Koto. […]

In the aftermath, radiation levels in Koriyama spiked at 30 to 40 times higher than legal limits, contaminating the city with caesium and other long-life radionuclides for decades to come. […]

“Nobody trusts the government any more,” says [restaurant’s owner Katsuko] Arima. She cites recent cases of official incompetence when supplies of beef, rice and vegetables declared safe by the authorities were found to be heavily contaminated. “You can only trust yourself.”

Aiko and Kenji Nomura agree. […]

The government decreed that the radiation risk to health was “minimal” beyond a 30km radius around the plant and has provided no support to help people leave independently. Kenji says it is afraid of triggering an exodus that would impoverish the disaster-hit region even more. […]

I could see this happening in the USA. I already imagine if my kids will show symptoms any day now.

      I don't buy this 'report' !

The reality was in the news a month ago : 62.7 % of Japanese voter DO Trust the government , a nuke-friendly one on top …

The combined readers of the Fukushima type News blogs do not exceed 100,000 … and is not growing .

Is that what the government told you?

Japanese voters used the system designed by and for the major political parties. They had to vote for politicians (that they didn't chose) to represent their (voter's) interests in 1000's of issues – only one being nuclear. Even a child will observe that such a rigged system isn't going to work.

Show me the line on the Japanese ballot that said "I'm forced to chose among the listed weasels, but I don't even trust the one I'm voting for: YES NO"

The majority of Japanese do not trust the Japanese government in any regard to nuclear power, just like most countries. Damage to the Japanese government is still accumulating and it will continue to do so. The government there *is* falling. To Western eyes, it's not doing so because it's moving at rate of imperceptibly slow motion and is accompanied by a lot of unrelated theatrics.

It's like watching the minute hand on a clock. I'm not sure if it's moving, but I know were it's going to be in a half-hour.

Something incredibly fundamental has happened in Japan.

The people can not be held responsible for the local economy.
The people have to look out for the welfare of their loved ones.
    Nothing else matters.

The area was wiped out the moment the ground stopped shaking,

what's more important a house and some stuff or your kids.

Would these people stay in a burning house?

Their region is on fire with nuclear waste.

So is ours in the USA…time will tell, sadly. The "exodus" would damage the economy of Fukushima..what about the lives of the people living there? Its all money to Japans government. Who said slavery was over? Its alive and well..just called a different name…Fukushima.

    • PavewayIII PavewayIII

Exactly, jec. The governments have morphed into for-profit businesses. Taxpayers are nothing but a host for the parasitic, self-sustaining, over-priced bureaucracies claiming to 'serve' the taxpayers.

The artificial political boundary known as Fukushima is not a concentration camp. Japanese citizens that made up Fukushima have no obligation or interest in remaining there as a host feeding a government that had abandon them. Leftover Fukushima politicians that stand to lose their jobs are the only ones crying for people to 'come back'.

The end stages of these governments are always the same: outsource taxpayer slaves by encouraging immigration. Guest workers and temporary residents generate tax revenues and don't demand much in return – they can't.

Bi-pedal tax-revenue generating units are required for government survival. Foreign workers just make the job of a parasitic government easier. Citizens are both a nuisance and a liability.

Correction, its not just Japan..its all the governments and their agencies participating in the Great Lie of Nuclear Safety.

      Capitalism run a muck, IMHO

      • Time Is Short Time Is Short

I don't know if capitalism is to blame, or a complete lack of financial and securities law enforcement.

The repeal of Glass-Steagall was the last of the consumer legal protections to fall, but no one at street level at the time saw the complete capture of international banking laws – and the governments that enforce them – by the criminal banking class.

And now it's far too late.

Russia and China are building the most new nuclear plants and have the worst pollution history. Neither is capitalistic. If the US forced the nuclear industry to pay their own way including all liability, there 3would be no nuclear industry. Even the US does not practice capitalism when it comes to the nuclear industry. In the US, the nuclear industry is an example of fascism.

No,it's not just Japan. But this was one of the most TERRIBLE countries for this to happen in. The national temperament has a cruel streak, and the national penchant for "saving face" seems to mean that it is fine to kill off others in the process. Other countries would be having riots in the streets, but in Japan, they are trained from childhood to be socially compliant. They will keep forcing these people to live in areas that will kill them, and then the whloe rest of the country will shun them like lepers because they are from that area! And whole TEPCO outfit needs to be arrested and jailed forever, but who will do it? Either in Japan or by international authority? We're here in America, but when we read articles like this, we want to scream! I cannot even imagine the horror it is for the Japanese people right now.

    • We Not They Finally

It just like the Manchurian Candidate. I hear all the time that nuclear energy is the safest energy no plutonium nothing just like candy. Yes the media has done a fabulous job spreading lies and protecting the fat cats wealth….People dont realize that Plutonium is man made and a single molecule can kill….Sadly I feel that there is little time to do anything….

  • We Not They Finally

THis is a genocidal, criminal government. And no, millions upon millions CANNOT just fend for themselves without high-powered help. First evacuate Japan!! These people are in the hands of monsters. They may look like fellow Japanese in the mirror, but they are inhumane monsters.

  • nedlifromvermont

You nailed it, jec, "the Great Lie of Nuclear Safety" stems from the same era as the Nazi lie about Jews, blacks, gypsies and Muslims being a different (inferior) race to Aryan German or British …

… and Goebbel's style propaganda (the bigger the lie, repeated often enough …) sold it to the western world, over the protests of scientists and generalists who knew better … and the rest of us were too busy growing up, skiing, blowing dope, whatever, to notice.

This nuclear insanity must stop now.

Entergy preparing to refuel Vermont Yankee, despite having no current Certificate of Public Good, because the nuclear business writes its own laws and owns its own corrupt, incompetent agency, the NRC, which reserves the right to decide if this stupid technology is safe enough; so Judge Murtha, in Vermont, ruled "It's so safe, you're not even allowed to discuss it …" or something to that effect …

I am sick of having to point out to people how stupid this all is, and they are sick of me trying. The Great Lie of Nuclear Safety … the nucleocrats will lie about the damages … the monetary value, the contamination, the cancers … they are all pathological liars!

Why license an unnecessary industrial facility, that, when it blows up, as they all may, you lose every business, home, farm, school, for thousands of square miles, forever, with no ability to return, ever, and which raises chances for cancer, everywhere?

    Why? Money …

  • We Not They Finally

And the Dow is soaring, and people are still saying that Japan has the third largest economy in the world. Japan — the country with NO GENETIC FUTURE BUT DEFORMITIES AND DEATH. Our every realistic, much less humane, reality check has gone off the rails. But at least GET THOSE PEOPLE OUT OF THERE!! It's hurting the hearts of EVERYONE by now — anyone who has half a heart and any eye to see.

  • japan guinea pig

Theres an old saying and it goes like this…"The people of a country get the government that they deserve " !!, The Japanese people are so politically dumb, its unbelieveable !!.Most of them believe every word that comes out of their politicians mouths. They are brought up to not question older people or authority !!.The government said Fukushima is safe, the food is safe and they believe it. Although there are a few who realize their being screwed, the VAST majority accept the government line.
