Fukushima Dismantling to Start as Cold Shutdown Announced, Bloomberg, Dec. 16:
“A stable condition has been achieved, and we can consider the accident itself contained,” -Japan’s Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda
[...] Arnie Gunderson, a Vermont-based nuclear engineer who has testified to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission on Fukushima, said in a phone interview. [...]
“That nuclear core is still in a configuration where the center is extraordinarily hot.” [...]
Gunderson said that declaring the cold shutdown at Fukushima risks further eroding people’s faith in the government’s ability to regulate the nuclear power industry.
“I actually think it’s going to blow up in their face,” he said. “In the eyes of the Japanese public, the last thing they need to do is exaggerate. And this is an exaggeration.”

I love the headline. Arnie is not saying, in this article at least, that the plant will literally explode again (well aware that it has at least three times), but is using the common figure of speech here.
I await the hydrovolcanic discussions in 5…4…3…2…

I thought the same thing when I first read it. There will probably be Arnie bashers here saying he changed his stance again. Just the fact that they can’t be transparent there alone should be enough reason for us to put all the other 400 plants into a real cold shutdown. Good job Arnie and bloomberg and everyone getting out the word.

He is right that Fukushima is not over. To spill (not leaking) that much contaminated water at an tremendous rate will not go without impacting the eco-system. He knows very well that radionuclide propagation in it will not stop at the bottom of the sea. But it will propagate everywhere in a wide array of ways such as wild birds eating fish full of plu, fish being eaten by people, plankton being eaten by shrimps, and the list goes on forever. One risk is that no one should eat fish from oceans again ever. Looking at the sharp fate of the journalist from Fukushima who was living often by eating contaminated fish (he died from acute leukemia in a few months only), we face a real threat here. And not only us but all the sea living creatures of the birds that feed on them and the animals that feed on birds and their eggs. It won’t go without notice and all those people who are continuing to live in Japan as if there was no danger. It just makes things worst and will be hard to hide under a carpet and some people will not like that at all. As well as the montain of costs on the reactors, people’s health and eventually reimbursement, that can’t be hidden in a budget that easily.

I trust Arnie when he says the corium could be in primary containment. That still does not change the fact this plant is decades away from a cold shutdown. So, blow up in their faces means more public support against nukes because everyone knows this is a blatent lie.
The conspiracy theorist in me, postulates the possiblility of some people in government having an actual soul wanting to change the system, but not in great enough numbers to affect change. So, they make these obvious lies and sell them as truths to the public. They are making such obvious lies now it is like they are sending a message to the public. They make it easy for even the most uninterested person to say, “They are lying to me face.” Maybe, some want to get rid of nukes in the government and hope is not lost. That’s the fantasy world though. haha

Arnie never said that the fuel is still in the primary containment. Only that he thinks it hasn’t gone completely through the concrete barrier. The primary containment has 20 holes for each reactor, this was before even the first earthquake on Mar. 11. The fuel started melting through these holes the first week after the earthquake when the pipes broke.

this from the bloomberg article
““Now the hardest part starts, which is the cleanup,” said Najmedin Meshkati, a professor of civil engineering at the University of Southern California, who worked as a consultant on decommissioning Chernobyl.
Experiences in other countries show the scale of the task still facing Tepco as it begins decommissioning the reactors, and cleaning contaminated waste, even without the complications posed by the damage at Fukushima.”
and what Najmedin Meshkati isnt telling anyone! this
“It will take about 100 years to decommission the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in full, Dmytro Bobrov, first deputy chairman of the State Agency of Ukraine for the Alienation Zone, reported.
“The whole period of decommissioning Chernobyl NPP is designed for a hundred years,” he said. The specialist noted that this is associated with a significant contamination of equipment and grounds.
According to him, the same applies to the Shelter facility over the destroyed fourth power unit of Chernobyl NPP. He explained that the reason for such a significant term is that it is dangerous from the standpoint of radiation safety. According to him, it takes a lot of time to reduce radioactivity of the reactor and other parts of the object.
Dmytro Bobrov said it is now extremely difficult to estimate the total cost of decommissioning Chernobyl NPP during the said period. However, he added that in the next five years, about 1 billion UAH should be allocated for these purposes annually (1 USD – 7.96 UAH).”

interesting article talking details… except for reactor 4 chernobyl, that is…?
“Around 10 t of equipment from unit 1 is shipped off site each day, and at that rate, work could be complete by 2020-2.
Meanwhile, defuelling – the first stage in the decommissioning of a nuclear power plant – is taking place at unit 3. After nuclear fuel assemblies have been left to cool in the reactor core for a few years, they can much more easily be removed for storage and eventual recycling or disposal. At unit 3, nine of the reactor’s 1000 assemblies are removed by rail each day for interim storage at the nearby INF SF-1 dry storage facility. However, the facility does not have sufficient space to hold all the fuel, and some must be kept in buffer pools until a second store is constructed.
Defuelling of units 1 and 3 began in December 2005. Unit 1 was defuelled by the end of November 2005 while unit three should be defuelled by late June this year.”

You would have thought they would have at least put tents up over reactors #3 and #4 before they declared cold shutdown.
But they can’t because they would blow up again due to hydrogen buildup.
The radiation from #3 has crumbled what was left of the walls. The SPF in #4 is now in open air. They can’t even hide it, so they resort to Hitler’s “big lie” technique.

IAEA to coordinate Pacific monitoring
14 December 2011
“It is expected that the enormous dilution capacity of the Pacific Ocean will lead to low residual concentrations of radionuclides in ocean waters such that any significant contamination of marine food in coastal waters outside of Japan will not occur,” said IAEA technical officer Hartmut Nies. “To date, only caesium -134 and caesium -137 were detected far offshore from the Japanese coast in the prevailing Kuroshio Ocean current at levels of less concern.”
The first meeting for the project took place in Australia in August, while a training workshop was held in the IAEA Environmental Laboratories in Monaco from 21-25 November. The workshop led to the adoption of a quality management system and database for the future monitoring efforts. The project is expected to run till 2015, with a first progress report due in 2012.

Excessive radiation found in sea organisms off China

“According to the statement, the levels of strontium-90, a radioactive isotope of strontium, found in squids are 29 times higher than the average background level of samples taken from China’s coastal waters.
This indicates that these waters have been clearly affected by radioactive material that leaked from the crippled nuclear power plant in Fukushima during the massive earthquake and tsunami disaster on March 11, the statement said.
The samples were also found to contain argentum-110m and cesium-134, which are normally difficult to detect in biological samples from China’s coastal waters, the statement said.”

Cold shutdown? So where am I going to roast my radioactive marshmallows now?
I think that what they REALLY might mean by cold shutdown at FUKU is that this whole industry is full of people who have hearts that are stone cold and dead. It is dead people walking around, much like zombies.
No compassion, no caring, no empathy… their hearts are stone cold and hard as a rock..I actually feel sorry for them. They sold their souls for a few pieces of worthless paper.
If they really cared, they could be fighting to shut down all nuclear reactors and switch to renewables, zero carbon fuels, like hydrogen, solar, wind, water, tides, geothermal, etc.
There are plenty of solutions, just not enough will and too few warm hearted, caring people who think seven generations into the future, while not selling their souls for a few measly $$.

But from the evil ones’ POV, it is a ‘numbers game’ – just so long as most people are deceived, that is scored as a successful op.
Took me a long time to realize that tptb (powers-that-be) are not ‘like’ organized crime. They ARE organized crime. Ruthless, crooked as can be, in it for the money, and human life (and the environment) mean nothing to them at all. This describes government and big business/banking – including the nuke industry, of course.
Most of us due to being fed dis-information all our lives from earliest infancy are exactly like people brought up in a cult – brainwashed but simply do not realize it.
Anyone who is involved on de-programming cult victims/members can tell you that it takes a long time, does not happen overnight.
And the truth about our world today, poised on the brink of multiple man-made crises and incipient disasters, is so scary that most people are in denial and would rather believe the MSM and govt. lies.

Yeah, I’ve heard that one, maybe true.
I’m more inclined to think that they are so full of fear from generations of trauma endured by our species. In some way it is all divine planning, and we are being released from our contracts to learn specific lessons while recycling here on earth. Some are choosing to move to the next level of teachings and being, and some are opting to help see this doomsday scenario through to its completion.
Actually, quite a purge going on for us, earth, the universe, what ever micro-macro situation you can imagine, and a few you can’t. When we start accessing a higher percentage of our minds (and the time is near) we will understand more completely and will forego our fears for a perpetual state of bliss, wether we reincarnate as vapour, or a rock (or paper and scissors for that mater). I feel driven to assist as many as possible to moving to the state of vapour, not that there is anything wrong with rocks. Love and humor and peace are the ultimate directions, with such divine complexity.
Something like that.

Cold shutdown? German and Austrian experts think this:
“Experts from the German Society for Reactor Safety (GRS)are criticizing the handling of the concept of cold shutdown. This is usually provided for normal operation – and not in the event of a disaster, the spokesman said in an interview with SPIEGEL ONLINE. “This suggests a sense of normalcy, which is not given in Fukushima,” says Sven Dokter.
In fact, the “cold shutdown”, an internationally established concept, has various definitions. The most common definition is the one that is dictated by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), says Doc. According to a cold shutdown three criteria must be met:
- The plant must be in a deactivated state. Experts speak of “unterkrititsch”, which means that no more nuclear fissions take place.
- Inside the reactor no increased pressure must prevail (while operating the pressure is up to several dozen bar).
- A certain level of temperature – 100 degrees Celsius – inside the reactors must be undercut.
All three criteria must be met in Fukushima, says the GRS expert. He’s not sure if this is the case.
Previously, a nuclear expert at the Austrian environmental organization Global 2000 had declared that temperatures are likely to be significantly higher in the reactors. “To speak of cold shutdown borders on a deliberate lie,” said Reinhard Uhrig. The molten fuel would have burned through the bottom of the reactor pressure vessel, and now lay in a lump at the bottom of the casing. There they pointed to continued temperatures of approximately 3000 degrees.
(…)
Report Comment
(cont.)
Too early for an all-clear
At a temperature of 3000 degrees you no could longer speak of a “lump”, because then the fuel would be liquid: The GRS experts, however, consider this scenario as unlikely. If rise in temperatures over 100 degrees there would be vapor over the reactors – and increased radioactivity be measurable.
“At the present temperature values can be assumed that there is currently not in the reactors on a large scale leads to nuclear fission,” says the GRS spokesman. In such a case would be in greater quantities of decomposition products such as xenon or iodine measured 133 131st “The stable state can, under certain circumstances, however, change quickly,” says Doc. Another quake, the precipitation of the newly created cooling systems – there are many conceivable scenarios that could again lead to a critical situation.

it’s all ‘maybe/maybe not-land’ to me.
Talking about the spiritual realm as some kind of answer/ solution to our very worldly practical problems reeks a bit of desperation. It really is what we resort to when we see no practical solutions.

I was a bit concerned when I saw the previous report from Arnie saying he didn’t think it would blow up now because the corium had cooled off greatly now(?) But this current statement is more inline with both what I’d have expected from him as a scientist/expert in the field and what I too expected at any second for the last week every time I watched the live video streams & read reports relevent to getting an accurate picture of what’s going on there & I couldn’t see anything that would’ve given me as a casual observer any indication of things stabilizing there at all! I had company pop up while I was watching what was happening & they got scared & as always asked why the regular TV news programs they’d watched didn’t have anything about it! So I had to explain for the umpteenth time about the “Family Tree” of strategic purchases of the major MSM outlets by the parent companies & highly-vested groups & the relationship to the World’s Largest Disaster being buried from view with an occasional “partial” truth being contained in newscasts being aired at 2-3a.m. when nobody’s likely to be watching! Anyway,I’m glad Arnie threw that last statement out there via Bloomberg’s phone interview because I couldn’t see him watch the eruptions of red, glowing “lava”(?)from the ground several kilometers from the reactor bldgs. while globs of multi-colored crap drip from holes in R2 with clearly visible, obviously “bad” things happening in all 4 Reactors while purple “snow”fell and bright flashes eminating from the precise direction R5 & “6″-which is rumored to be in “big trouble” & the weekly monitoring data from TEPCO itself shows the monitoring points nearest R6 displays the highest level of the entire plant at I believe it said “350uSvt”!(?) compared to 20 to just under 100uSvt at all other mon.&det. station points near R1 thru R4?!!It’s obvious “something” unpleasant(er) seems ready to occur.(sick again-goin’2sleep)~PEACE~
