Arnie Gundersen Press Conference
Sept 5, 2012

At 8:45 in

I was able to ask [Tepco and NISA] questions for the very first time since the accident.

And frankly, I was surprised and appalled by their responses.

It was as if they were wearing blinders.

Arnie gunderson is really a actor from hollywood

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGKF_OOgsSk&feature=plcp

They use actors to appear like they are on our side delivering the facts, but every single thing they say is spoken with the intent to minimize as much as possible

    remember this headline

Gundersen: “I think Fukushima Daiichi released somewhat more radiation than Chernobyl” (VIDEO)

If you cant see the minimization in that youre blind, this guy is supposed to be the ex VP of a nuke company, If that was real he would have awareness of the extent of the damage on day 1. A real whistleblower would not let you forget that there are already scores of workers at the plant dead, and children with lumps in their throat, a real whistleblower would post a map of the radiation on the west coast, not vaguely mention some hot particles…remember how he went to tokyo and only took five samples…? Who would only take 5 samples? oh ya and his wife got in a low speed carwreck the week before the trip and couldnt go…arnie does not care about you, or anyone in japan. Every appearance on CNN is money in his pocket.

Japan and the world is in denial about this nuclear accident. The only hope is to act on Gundersen's suggestions, which are based on facts.

IMO Arnie G. is a gift seldom experienced. I appreciate that some might prefer he deliver his message with more blunt, even accusatory language. To my observation, that is simply "not his way".

To my observation, from his core, he appreciates the potential for "defensive reaction" to unwelcome message. He appreciates that people busy "digging to defend position" can't be receptive – and by 'rules of normal human psychology', there's a fair amount of resistance in minds of those who need to shift. He's using language that may be most effective.

IMO, the world needs other voices also, voices that are direct, blunt, and appropriately accusatory. But we also need a "slew" of Arnies. (I've only listened fairly carefully to first half.)

Let those that don't like Arnie suggest someone else that has done nearly as good a job at calling out TEPCO since 3/11/11…

All of us that have been around since then are dyeing to hear your reply

    OVER…

Be sure to listen to all of it. 55 minutes onward he explains the time-frame for decommissioning…. And he simply could not be any more honest..

"In 90 years there will be 8 times less radiation than there is now…And perhaps in the best interests of protecting the people that will have to dismantle this plant to wait for 60 or 90 years to get the exposure low enough that 1000's of people will not be overexposed."

"My response makes me very sad, I don't want to admit that we're talking about 3 generations of Japanese having to face that problem. But I do believe it is realistic."

No he does not list all the radionuclide s etc etc…he so very simply says it like it is, with out all the details…but simple enough for anyone to understand…to hear the Truth…

And for him to be in Japan telling them that…is a great responsibility he has taken on.

Thanks MaidenHeaven … as I typed comment above sound was on, I heard, "My response makes me very sad, …" and felt Arnie must have sustained his style throughout. You're right, "a great responsibility" – he has and does step forward to meet it. I have deepest respect and appreciation for him being who he is, doing what he's doing.

I have to be perfectly honest right now. I am tired of hearing about the horrific exposure to the poor Japanese children, when so many American children and folks on the West Coast are bearing the brunt of the eastbound tsunami of radionuclides without a peep from anyone. Where is their voice? Who will speak up for them when their windpipes become restricted from diseased thyroids? Hey Arnie, when you get back to the States, why don't you investigate our West Coast with your geiger counters and report back to us. Perhaps you can get a reading while you ride Disneys matterhorn.

Hi hbjon … By posting comments in support of Arnie I don't mean to dismiss any individuals or groups anywhere who're presently dealing with radioactivity contamination – on the West Coast, or even elsewhere in the world from non-Fukushima sources. I don't even mean to dismiss suffering that has nothing immediately to do with radioactivity.

I don't think anyone here is "prioritizing" as if one group's issues are more pressing than another's. It's just that Arnie was the focus here. (and the entire site is strongly focused first on Fukushima, with attached wider concerns often discussed.) You probably already know what I'm saying or mean to say.

I agree – it *is* discouraging, sometimes *very* discouraging, to be keenly aware of a very real need – in this case directly related to Fukushima – that appears neglected. It's good for me to be reminded to prevent my 'over-focus'. Thank you.

(I doubt Arnie will necessarily become the voice for the American WC and other contaminated regions except in general remarks – but who knows – and if not he, then someone surely will!)

Arnie has done a great job and in a non-accusatory manner. The fact they seek the advice of a non-Japanese nuclear consultant speaks volumes.

Guess what American nucleocrats? The people in Japan don't want any more nuclear poisons. They have had more than their share of the enormous grief when Pandora's box is shattered. Their health is rocky and the beautiful land has been scarred forever. Refugees, scared parents…terrified children. Toxic dangers lurking in every bowl of food. Organic farmers in Fukushima feel like a hara kiri tanto lodges permanently in their stomach, killing them ever so slowly,

I wouldn't blame the citizens for being angry at their occupiers as well as their government.

They have paid a dear price for nuclear power plants and electricity too deadly to meter.

The arnie bandwagon comes out in force with a collective unified voice!

This whole website has to pull Arnie's gunderson out of their mouths…

This is simple math…everything posted to date about fukushima has been riddled with lies

Could the only guy who tells you everything you know about fukushima be lying? Hes the only person…you know how easy it is to control one person.

How could anyone say something like "I have to be perfectly honest right now. I am tired of hearing about the horrific exposure to the poor Japanese children…" like the commenter above?

What do you think Chernobyl was? A puff of harmless smoke?

Reportedly, just 20% healthy children in some areas
DNA damage increasing through insect generations – yeah, what about the humans

You don't care, Chernobyl didn't deposit much in the USA, compared to Fukushima. Therefore Arnie is a shill in your America-centric world for not calling Fuku a million times worse than Chernobyl.

      Prick. Selfish, selfish prick.

Or a nuclear shill trying to sow discord?

Humanity won't be dead in 1 year due to Fukushima. Not in 30 years either (humanity, not talking about individual humans). 120 years? Eeek… but same goes for Chernobyl. Think positive – the coming apocalypse may be just regional. In both cases.

Seems a few people can't handle Gundersen telling the world the nuclear industry has no way to safely store nuclear waste. Ever.

But he's the only one telling it like it is.

  • I appreciate Gunderson's work very, very much.

However, I have also seen him avoid discussing issues.

In one of his recent interviews Caldicott pushed him on unit 3.

After being unable to change the subject, he finally said that not much is known about the status of unit 3.

I think that unit 3 is something he is not able to talk about.

So, I appreciate Gundreson's efforts very much and am grateful for his tireless work, but I also recognize that there are taboo subjects for him.

I don't know how bad Fukushima is but I suspect that people who really do understand have been given ground rules.

    Remember Matt Simmons?

You may be right, Majia. The art of saying what needs to be said without actually saying it mixed with knowing when going too far will render you totally ineffective or take you out of the action all together! Caldicott's more impatient and bold style is also needed. I appreciate the dedication and different styles of both so much! I've noticed before that dialogues between them have a dynamic that works well.

I don't understand why you would jump down Arnie's throat for some slightly non-super alarmist comments. I mean, he's still over there and his message is pretty consistent and it doesn't appear that he's lying. I don't think he would get his point across very well if he shouted at everyone how deadly the radiation is and how their kids are going to die. He's not saying its raining cotton candy over there though…give the man a break, at least he's saying what needs to be said, listen to the whole damn interview.

There is the pitch for small reactors.

The corporations strategy is to divide and conquer. Get people to fight each other instead of paying attention to them.

This strategy seems to be working well so far.
