Watch reporter Anthony Gucciardi call the Department of Health and Human Services about the order of 14 million doses of potassium iodide here

Nuclear expert Arnie Gundersen of Fairewinds Energy Education, Jan. 6, 2014 (1:39:15): I don’t know why the government is buying 14 million KI tablets […] The United States has bought a large order — 14 million pills — but the interesting part about this is that the iodine from Fukushima Daiichi is gone. It decays away — in less than 90 days, there is no more radioactive iodine left. So the question is why are the buying pills now? Are they going to stock pile them for another nuclear accident, another nuclear bomb explosion? […] The pill doesn’t protect you from depleted uranium, it doesn’t protect you from cesium, or anything. The pills that the government is buying is just to protect you from radioactive iodine. When a nuclear plant shuts down, within 90 days there’s no iodine left. So, I don’t think they’re buying them for Fukushima Daiichi, but I don’t know why they placed this big order right now.

Soon after 3/11 we provided Japan with 15 million potassium iodide pills:

Do they seriously think those pills are going to save their snake skin hides?
Correct AG of F E E, These pills do NOT protect you from much after a few months. Further expertise in these matters of survival are where we must all go.
Somehow I doubt they are for any "future" event. This may indicate the Monarch has emerged from its chrysalis and is drying its wings.

One more thing, the readings on greens of leafy veggies like leeks, still are dropping after a few days from purchase levels. This is indicative to me of ongoing I 131 production however. So effectively 90 days after the first exposure of day one fades, but the intake of I 131 today has 90 days yet to go.

The only benign reason that I can imagine for the Government to be purchasing these pills now is that they may have one of those scheduled legal requirements to discard old stock and purchase new stock of supplies as drugs pass their best-buy date.

I read a statement that the gov said that the pills they had were outdated and they were scheduled to put in a new order , however they went thru a different payment channel , health and human. Services I believe and that was when the alarm bells went off . It also said that the prices now have gone up 5000 percent . Someone care to google that ? My cut and paste inabilities are not helpful.

The current price for potassium iodide at the walgreens in Berkeley CA is listed at 8.98 for 90 pills at 32.4 mg x 90 pills. As whether or not the price has increased 5000 times I would say it hasn't cause the price would have practically been free, no? I would say that it is relatively cheap. I'm going to ask my doctor for a scrip just in case. She put me on calcium tabs with vitamin D to aid in preventing strontium uptake a few months back. Medicare picked up the tab. So she might be apt to give me the scrip for this as well although Medicare will not cover potassium iodide.

My expertise only lies in one area, medicine. Think I can explain the iodine purchase as I have known about it since day one. Here we go: Certain medications take time to enter the bloodstream , and reach a 'therapeutic' level. Hence the need for blood draws periodically. With me? Now I know that the dose of iodine purchased by these bastards was 65 mg each, 20 per card [punch out type called unit]this is NOT enough iodine to help with radiation exposure. Here's what I think. Apparently, there are certain government officials ordering it for themselves under supervision of a nuclear trained MD. And, they have already been taking iodine as this 65 mg would be considered a 'therapeutic' dose. Uptake of iodine into the thyroid and tissues takes time. Months even. One can take as much as 300mg a day, but not for a long time [taxes the kidneys] unless you were getting high rads all the time, then you would die anyway. So, what I have figured out is that they have been taking iodine for a long, long time. They just got caught ordering it this time. Please also note that a proper diet has to be maintained along with something like organic Chlorella [natural iodine/minerals] as a supplement to keep healthy. It would get expensive to live in a radiated world. I hope this helps but I am still learning about thyroid/body issues concerning radiation.

Is it true that long term use of iodine could cause reactive hyporthyroidisim ? I thought i read it somehwere , as a warning if i am not mistaken .
And are there diferences between different types of iodine , in molecular form or bound to another molecule etc ? These are questions we have been discussing in another forum .

See information online for David Brownstein, M.D. He is considered the world's foremost expert on the use of iodine for health.

Maybe you and GOM can discuss this off this site? It might be more appropriate.

You're into the realm of asking medical questions. Unless GOM can dispense online information here (practice online medicine), you question, IMO needs to be posed elsewhere.

Please let's not get into trouble by putting people into the position of "practicing medicine without a license."

That's a good way to get this site shut down. Just saying, artika. I've belonged to a lot of online health forums, and I know things get dicey when people ask questions which can be construed as asking for medical advice.

I'm not trying to be a jerk; I just know the FDA is very particular about this kind of thing, and we all want to stay out of trouble here.

My advice is always, "research it for yourself," or "ask your personal physician."

If you stay in the parameters of the two things in the sentence above, though, there can be a certain amount of discussion. Just please don't go over the "practicing medicine without a license" thing; it truly can get people into trouble. Admin, too.

To answer the iodine question it is not wise to mix iodines [with other high potent natural forms] or even take it. I wouldn't. Organic Chlorella is what I take. From New Chapter, grown indoors in Central American rainforest. Also wheatgrass supplement. As for longterm use, it is not slated for that. Ask a Big Pharma doctor? lol You are so far away from your knowledge base it's pathetic.

Ho taters I tought people should be warned about NOT taking too much of it since the issue is radiation protection . That s why i thought its important to know . I mean people should know right ? For example , If there are people with heart problems arythmias etc and they start taking KI tablets they could get into trouble and i dont see why we shouldnt inform them . In the end many people will be taking iodine i think . am i wrong ? I am just worried about people taking too much of it and getting hurt . thats all .
I am only asking an opinion , i am not going to hold anyone responsible . In any case thanks for the warning .

many moons Well it is neither gold nor coffee but both and many more . So basically you have all kinds of radioactive materials , they usually start with high molecular weigth substances (like uranium ) and then they disintegrate into something else :) then you have another substance (an isotope ) and a lot of radiation is produced in the mean time , and than it can turn into something else again and so on and on .it can start as uranium and end up in iodine caesium strontium enz enz . So in total it seems there are more than a thousand substances ,and all sorts of radiation , alphe beta gamma etc .
But EVEN IF , it was a single substance , it wouldnt be a seperate substance like gold just sitting at the bottom of the ocean waiting for us to go and find him , but it would be integrated in your cells in your body , in the trees, animals , in the water in your blood in air your breathe etc etc . It would BECOME a part of everything . Impossible to find it and collect it . We are talking about tiny particles , up to molecular scale . There can be thousands of them in just one cell and you cant even see the cell itself . Thats the scale .
Once they spread around they are impossible to collect .
And some of them have half lives of millions of years ,,AND STILL some idiots think the accident is confined to japan ,, FOR MILLIONS OF YEARS ?? JAPAN ITSELF WILL NOT BE THERE!! and these poisons will still be killing everything around then (if anything alive would be left )…

These plants were designed to minimize the risk of meltdown, but if/when one occurs, there is NO PLAN B. Assumptions were made that understated the risk, but the price of being wrong is an un-correctable catastrophe. We should have never accepted those odds in the first place, but now we will face the consequences. If the nuke cartel is allowed to continue, we can expect this to be repeated again, and again, until we reach an ELEvated enough level that we don't have to worry about the consequences any more.

Clarification: I had also quoted 90 days, but I checked make that every 8 days. 131I (half life 8 days) is the most common radioactive fission-product of nuclear fission, and is thus produced inadvertently in very large amounts inside nuclear reactors. Due to its volatility, short half life, and high abundance in fission products. If there is any further ongoing I 131 production it is due to the fact that the fuel that melted is still very hot. Called ongoing criticality, it can continue making I 131 & Xe 133. Also the wretched condition the fuel pools are there, they also contribute to I 131 production as well as they cool over the years.

I think Arnie was referring to a one time criticality event, that perhaps the government may be preparing for in the future.

Our local emergency management supplies in East Coast USA are out of date, per the local health departments. We are close to a nuclear power plant, so having KI is important in a nuclear accident at those plants. However, the numbers of pills..would only cover less than 1M people, you dont just take ONE pill, its a couple. Plus as said above, its for a NEW radiation exposure or nuclear fallout with I-131. So agree, not sure what this is about, suppose they could be filling outdated stock supplies. Kind of like all the AMMO purchased recently. No clue what the plan is, or if there is a plan.

One has to have a place to EVACUATE to, a clean and safe new environment which KI will allow you to reach in a week or so. Don't think that's possible in this scenario.

jec, great advice and I have done the same. The governments of the world are the dealers of the game they set up, and they, just like all of us out here, must prepare for what ever comes this way in the near future. Only 4-7 years until the next "out of control" Nuclear Plant meltdown! :(

Nuclear Technology has proven itself to be a failure at all levels in less than 60 years. :(

They are worried and they should be. These governments around the world have allowed Nuclear Power Plants to be built when there is no "shut off switch" if and when they blow up or fail. They bought the scientific lingo, hook, line and sinker, and they now know they are in big trouble.

Those poor sailors are having their balls cut off along with other ailments and that is one reality that the world needs to face. We are not safe from this Nuclear Technology and never were and we humans and those governments that allowed this folly have made a huge mistake for the planet and all the biological life present here. :(

We all should take appropriate steps to prepare for the dire uncertain chaotic future this Nuclear Technology has foisted directly onto our living world.

Hi HoTaters, It may mean that "Dropsila" of the "S" species is a bot; or that several component flies under the same persona can't keep up with references from prior threads. The "S" response doesn't make sense, even for this character. I take that as a good indicator of acute failure of the flies.

My post (song lyrics above) is a direct reference to the misuse of the scientific taxonomy; i.e., so-called scientific experts calling a "drosophila" a "dropsila."

The name was jokingly applied to such expert on several of the threads.

@Homo Insapiens, HoTaters, I think HI is right about the "S" timing of posts. I wonder what the response rate of "S" is across threads, at any given time, i.e., auto-track on 4 threads, live "S" on 1; or just on auto at select/all the time. All new to me but very interesting.

Also, I think Bot-brain "S" is set to recognize certain words, e.g., specific "S" or "O" or "Mr. B." name; or a profanity, which would trigger an "appropriate" response.

So…we should continue to not to state the entity's moniker and not use profanity (at least not in conjunction with the entity's moniker). From my limited experience with these creatures, 'seems pretty sophisticated, and perhaps expensive. Damn, Enenews and Enenewsers must be quite the thorn in the side of the N-beasties for them to go through all this trouble and expense! Excellent! :-)

Potassium Iodide pills are just a scam. I remember as a teenager when they decided to do away with the Civil Defense System and closed down all the bomb shelters. All the local schools, fire houses, police stations, apartment buildings, everywhere the shelters were being emptied and there were gieger counters, glucose tablets (Christmas candy of all varieties) and iodide pills by the tons. The candy came in 55 gallon paper drums and it was the same assortment of hard candies that you can buy today. I actually got several of my friends to help me bring home 2 of those barrels full of candy from the local firehouse basement. It lasted for years. I had several Victoreen geiger counters, the 700 models. (I lived in Brooklyn where the Victoreens were made) a dozen or so dosimeters and other paraphernalia and at least 10,000 potassium iodide pills. The jars they were in had loose tops and the iodine smell permeated the house so my mother threw them out one day when I wasn't home. There was an article about the pills in Popular Science and it mentioned that the Govt paid a fortune for these pills that were being thrown out and they showed that it cost (at that time) only 1 cent to produce a thousand of those pills because potassium and iodine are dirt cheap to produce. It was an article on how the Govt is responsible for running up the costs of things by paying loads of money for cheap items. They were paying through the nose for that stuff. A scam to enrich politicians friends.

The bitter waters, fountain "heads" are the entries to the ocean from ground water, the rain full of Cesium chloride as a result. A plague the super TB and other horrible new "flu". What future? This is now.If the electron is completely stopped by the strong positive force of the nucleus, the radiated x-ray energy will have an energy equal to the total kinetic energy of the electron. This type of action occurs with very large and heavy nuclei materials. The new x-rays and liberated electrons will interact with matter in a similar fashion to produce more radiation at lower energy levels until finally all that is left is a mass of long wavelength electromagnetic wave forms that fall outside the x-ray spectrum.

When conditions are right hot pink can be observed in the sky 45 degrees from the sun, that may be cesium inclusion refraction scatter. When looking around the sky area of solar disk illumination pink will occur where sundogs would form in frost clouds, this pink beryllium color is a direct scatter, not a reflected red sun on opposite(180 degrees) sky white clouds to REFLECT the color of both, red and white, for pink. Coastal area photos of sunsets on many news sites are showing the phenomenon. Something to check for while relaxed, and enjoying our designer sunsets.

I think they were trying to quietly restock NPP's that are suppose to have so many on hand. With suburban growth building practically on top of plants now that were once out in the country, i bet they never increased their stocks to match the surrounding population. Under the new take-a-look Jaczko managed to get started, while watered down after his departure, having enough potassium iodine on hand in the store room might be a requirement to getting a renewed operating license.

    • They just pretended there was "No Danger To The General Public." They didn't have KI even for the responding workers. So we bought the local health food store out of Kelp capsules. The government did fly in several million doses of KI to be passed out, but it was kept under armed guard in a hanger at the Harrisburg airport because between the time of ordering and the delivery, it had been decided not to 'stress' the public by making them think there was radioiodine on the loose.

Japanese experts recently found that singing is just as effective in radiation prevention as smiling and drinking beer.

So let's sing radiation away once and for all !

Please find below my charming new song NO FUEL TODAY which is dedicated to TODAY'S FOOLS who are still dreaming the nuclear dream which – I'm sorry to say – is more of a nightmare in terms of the real world we unfortunately live in most of the time [at least we still do as of now, ha ha].

Take your copy of the lyrics, everyone ! I'm sure you all know the melody, it's a natural match, if only I was able to remember the name of that song, damned ! Total lapse of memory – must be an effect of the radiation… (of course there isn't any, right ?)

    NO FUEL TODAY

No fuel today, lost in a tragic way
The vessel stands forlorn, a symbol of the dawn
No fuel today, they state the plant's alright
but anyone who's wise knows Tepco always lies

Most of us know just what this message means
The end of mankind (and other life, it seems)
We knew for long that Fukushima scene
Has ramifications never told on TV screen

No fuel today, the pool has gone away
As water levels fell, broke loose a fire hell

But all that's left is a place dark and lonely
    A crippled plant in Japan's north-eastern part
Radiation horrors don't stay local only
So we've just seen the start

They published the results of their joint effort in 1928, under both names.

Fukushima, from 2000 miles away, caused the radio nuclides to spike to high levels. These same islands in Alaska were used for nuclear bomb testing in the 1960's. And the increase in radio nuclides was about the same as from Fukushima.

Wrap your head around that one. It is almost unfathomable. Proof is here.

Sunspot AR 1944 was facing earth several days ago with the highest (60%) NOAA estimate of X class flares I have seen in 4 years of watching, prompting us to wrap our backup solar charge controllers and other electronics in heavy aluminum baking pans and put in the microwave for faraday 'cage' protection in case of another fast (18 hour) 'geoeffective' solar blast.

NOAA sees these large sunspots coming around 2 weeks ahead in the 26 day solar mid-latitude rotation with the rear-facing sun camera, so I'll add my speculation that despite their ubiquitous 'all is well' misrepresentation of real potential dangers, they saw the recurring grid collapse threat to nuclear operations and prompted the KI order to cover the needs of the operating staff of the totally CME-cooling-system-vulnerable 99 remaining u.s. NPPs.

Disconcerting that gov't lying and secrecy reduces us to this guessing game as to our fate.

What makes me come with this idea? Iodine spikes were registered several times – in Japan, and even in Europe. The same bahaviour was typical for the bastards ruling in Eastern Europe. They told the public everything is just fine, while providing their own food and supplements from abroad. Bastards are bustards everywhere and they tend to love higher positions, because they are not able to gain genuine respect and love. They need advantages and profits to feel themselves meaningful.

It's recommended but not required that states with nuclear power plants maintain a stock of potassium iodide pills sufficient to provide a dose (one dose is two pills) to every person living within a ten-mile radius of each plant. The pills' shelf life is about 6 years, and since stocking is not required, it's likely that most states don't maintain current stocks. I did some rough calculations – reported them about a week ago in another post — and found that it would take about 8 million tablets to cover the residents within ten miles of all the nuclear power plants in the US. That's the right order of magnitude to suggest that the government might be oerdering these 14 million pills to distribute to the states to have on hand, in keeping with the stocking guidelines. And while all this is conjecture, one reason for doing this stockpiling now could be that news about Fukushima may be about to go mainstream — when that happens, it seems reasonable to think that announcements will be made that all people in the US who live near power plants are "protected," with the potassium iodide stockpiles as evidence. The RFP says the pills must deliver to one location in Maryland by February 1, so perhaps there's a feeling that Fukushima news may go mainstream shortly after.

Hey, at least they are thinking ahead to the next nuclear disaster, especially given that the government is extending the operating years of aging reactors another 10 to 20 years when they were built to last 40 and are most all already over that, having been built in the 60's, 70', and early 80's. The good news is that some public protests did force the NRC to decline renewals they had fully intended to grant, even to leaking reactors with long histories of frequent accidents and periodic releases into the environment. The other good news is that US reactors are also now being required to have back up safety plans. Imagine that. Alright, they had plans before, but, they didn't actually have to apply to actual possible scenarios, just best guesses of a few things that might go wrong but probably never would, like there would never be a big earthquake ever anywhere near a nuclear power plant, or never be a big tornado anywhere in the vicinity of one, or never a dam breaking up river of one, or never a hurricane creating high inland water drowning cooling pumps or snarling cooling water intakes with storm debris, or never have operators pocket money instead of fixing and maintaining about to break parts, or never do a retrofit that doesn't meet code and not turn themselves in to the authorities, or never show up drunk at work, or… . So, now they have to come up with some scenarios that might happen after all and plan for those. Maybe all the potassium iodine pills…

The potassium iodine order is part of the NRC’s feeble response to the perceived dangers of and lessons learned from Fukushima.

The NRC hasn't yet made a single U.S. nuclear power plant any safer, based upon what we now know happened at Fukushima, than they were since the Fukushima accident. The NRC may debate this, with analysis based on false data and irrelevant propositions.

After the Fukushima disaster, a task force assembled by the commission's chairman identified a list of safety improvements including top tier items to be "started without unnecessary delay." These included “reliable hardened vents, additional venting capability, enhanced spent fuel pool instrumentation, flood and seismic walk downs.”

But these important safety upgrades are still years away from being implemented, if ever. In fact, some of these safety improvements have been on the commission's to-do list since the 1990s, and do not address what we know actually happened at FU with regards to mechanical, electrical, and structural failures.

Regulators in the US and across the world continue to ignore geological, terrestrial and space weather risks on relevant timeframes.

Fission can occur in spent fuel pools as we’ve seen at FU. None of these actions address the FU SFP structural failures, the potential risks related to terrorism, or safe management of the enormous quantity of spent fuel in pools scattered across the entire US.

US NRC Response to Fukushima-Commissioner George Apostolakis,U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission,CmrApostolakis@nrc.gov, PSAM Topical Conference, Tokyo, Japan, April 15, 2013

      http://www.nrc.gov/about-nrc/organization/commission/comm-george-apostolakis/apostolakis-04-15-2013-psam.pdf

Report Conclusions : NRC implementing safety enhancements at U.S. plants; No imminent risk from continued operation of U.S. nuclear power plants; NRC is sharing best practices from lessons-learned implementation with the international community; NRC continues to evaluate additional lessons learned for applicability to U.S. plants.

These conclusions completely lack credibility when compared to the facts underlying the disaster at FU. Their application in Japan would in no way have stopped the contamination of the entire Pacific Ocean.

The NRC elephant in the room: “Emergency Planning Zones
For planning purposes, the NRC defines two emergency planning zones (EPZs) around each nuclear power plant.

The exact size and configuration of the zones vary from plant to plant due to local emergency response needs and capabilities, population, land characteristics, access routes, and jurisdictional boundaries.

The two types of EPZs are: The plume exposure pathway EPZ extends about 10 miles in radius around a plant. Its primary concern is the exposure of the public to, and the inhalation of, airborne radioactive contamination.(Cont)

The ingestion pathway EPZ extends about 50 miles in radius around a plant. Its primary concern is the ingestion of food and liquid that is contaminated by radioactivity.”

How many people actually live within 10 and 50 miles of nuclear power plants? Depending on the available sources which all extrapolate from census data, an estimated 4-6 million people live within 10 miles of a plant, 110-140 million live within 50 miles of a plant. By the way, homeowners should take note, insurance policies will not compensate for nuclear damage. You are likely on your own, perhaps with the exception of a few pills given from the NRC.

It is a wishful fantasy by the NRC and other US agencies that any portion of these populations could be evacuated or even a response could be executed in a plant disaster.

The purchase of the potassium Iodine pills may be related to two items mention in the FU Lessons Learned related to Tier 3 Recommendations: “Additional items added by NRC staff or external stakeholders…Revisit Emergency Planning Zone Size… Pre-stage potassium iodide beyond 10 miles”

NRC: Keep the pills. Advocate for the elimination of the Price Anderson Act, require comprehensive liability insurance for all nuclear power operators and related NPO corporations to ensure full coverage of the cost of NP waste through its life cycle by the corporations who produced it. Require all spent fuel which can moved to dry storage to immediately be stored Hardened Offsite Storage Systems.

Let’s see how many NPP are economically viable when they compete in the open market with some semblance of safety and responsibility to taxpayers and citizens.

My sarcastic response may already have been said in the thread since I don't have the usual luxury of having the time to read all my peeps and a few nuke-puke creeps responses to the storyuline-but I'll just add that the 14,000,000 iodine tablets are only for the use of 150,000 nuke-pukes,govt. a-holes & their elite families(?)!! :( FUKu the rest of us schlepps who aren't spending enough money(or making it!)to buy, buy, buy more useless crap in addition to all the overpriced necessities needed in our daily lives. There's probably at least a little bit of FUKU in EVERYTHING we buy, use, eat, drink by now anyways I'd imagine(?)…..it is what it is & no-I'll NEVER get used to living in this foul.post-311 FUKuP world where EVERYTHING is suspect & the worst of conspiracies probably pale in comparison to the truth/reality??!! (Anyone wanting to hear something "nice" or offering a glimmer of "hope" should NOT read my posts!! ;) PEACE :|

I wish I had the luxury of being able to pre-order/purchase whatever a "lifetime" supply of Letrozole would be for my wife, since she was told that she HAS to take the anti-cancer pill every day for the rest of her life and her Medicare plan MAKES her use WalMart Pharmacy for all her prescription drug purchases and for 4 mopnths straighjt they didn't have any on hand to fill her prescription when we fill the other 16 prescriptions there and ALWAYS have to come back "next Tuesday"??!! When, not "IF" TSHTF,how,WHERE will we get the crap from and how will it impact her??!!-It's not like I can pick up the phone and order a 10-year supply??!!(10 yrs. being very over-optimistic re; her life expectancy at this point in time :( ) It's kinda disgusting that we still have to grovel & kiss TPTB's ass even though I have NO use for them or anything they got personally and do NOT intend to EVER file for ANYTHING they dole out via Medicaid,LINK,Sec.8 housing, etc. in my own name or in my behalf,my wife however is another story and she PAID through the nose for many years before she became sick & unable to work so she earned it and we have to do what we have to do,but when she dies & IF I survive a bit longer THEY will have a hard time tracking me down & keeping track of me because I will handle my own affairs & see to my basic needs WITHOUT any "help" from Uncle Sam & his dysfunctional family or contribute to fascism in any way! ;) PEACE
