Gundersen: I’m now not eating Pacific Ocean fish — Bio-accumulation of Fukushima nuclear waste concerning — Effects of lower-level radiation worse than predicted (VIDEO)

Published: January 9th, 2014 at 8:21 pm ET

Nuclear expert Arnie Gundersen of Fairewinds Energy Education, Jan. 9, 2014:

At 0:30 in — We’ve spoken to other scientists we respect; radiation chemists, environmental engineers and ocean biologists,  and we all agree that while the contamination of the Pacific Ocean is serious, it’s not as dire as some bloggers are urging you to believe. […] According to the National Academy of Sciences BEIR VII report, and contrary to what the nuclear industry would like you to believe, all radiation is harmful. The math is quite simple — the more radiation you receive, the bigger the risk, the less radiation you receive, the smaller the risk. […] However, many scientists also believe that radiation effects are actually worse at low levels than the BEIR 7 report predicts — and we at Fairewinds support that analysis. In Dec. 2012 radiological biologist Ian Fairlie wrote an excellent article detailing the discrepancies […]

At 5:00 in — [The Pacific is] being contaminated by water leaking from Fukushima Daiichi. Is the ocean safe? If I lived on the Pacific coast, I would feel free to swim in the Pacific Ocean, and run along the beach on a foggy morning. The amount of man-made radiation is currently quite low. But I do remain concerned about eating fish caught in the Pacific Ocean because the government is not releasing data about bio-accumulation of radioactivity in the Pacific Ocean fish. Until there’s a fully transparent radiation database on fish, eating them is a risk I personally have chosen to avoid.

Some doctors and scientists are somewhat more concerned about radiation exposure while at the beach, especially for young children:

As public awareness hits critical mass, I want to remind all of my fellow ENENewsers that the amount of shills AND trolls will be on the increase. If you want to follow my lead and pledge to ignore any and all identified shills and trolls, please comment below to show your commitment.

I'll start. I will not allow a shill/troll to distract my attention even for one post. I will not respond, reply, engage, or acknowledge their existence here at ENEnews. I will remain commited to discussing and disseminating the terrible truth with my brothers and sisters in arms.

    • I will do my best to follow your lead…

Has anybody noticed the wave of Radioactive high's which moved into the West Coast today on and has moved into central USA reducing as it moves across the country ??

I presume a few days ago, Fukushima experienced increased readings between meltdowns and them working on removing spent fuel from the damaged pools. Now that output out in the Pacific is over the USA, pushed along with the Jetstreams.

mr socref, also states nobody has died from Fuku,
Like OMG., no one has died? you wanna bet? deaths globally have gone up since Fuku,, in places most affected figures are through the roof,,, you wouldn't dare be in Japan would you? the reports coming out of Japan are terrible, even some famous people dropping dead,, suddenly, the heart stopped, its constant daily bombardment.. weakening your immune system leaving you unable to fight, if your already weak, sick or frail, radiation doses are enough to finish you off, try living in Tokyo recently? how many ambulances have rushed left right and centre? non stop sirens… Before Fuku this wasn't the case so Yes, its true people are dropping dead everywhere as a result of Fuku radiation.. i have first hand proof coming out of Japan and have spoken to many JAPANESE, but alot of them are still in the dark and believe the governments and nuke industry, shame on you.

May I have an useful suggrstion

In some boards, you have a "personal ignore list" in a way, you don't see the posters you don't "like". Everone have his own idea of what is a shill / troll / disturbing force or whatever. With such a list, it's on everyones OWN hand what (s)he will see. You can be your own censor.

I know, sometimes I'm argue to harsh against (nearby) lies or this kind of "half truth", some "professionals" exsudate. Yes, I'm on this site to get informations, but … not only. …this whole troll shill thing has been around for a long time wearing a variety of names. I have been unclear about what makes the most sense in keeping with our goals of getting truthful reports and sharing and supporting what we know to help each other.

I don't know that we will all agree on who the shills and trolls are at times, other times it is quite obvious. That makes your pledge offer a bit tricky.

I guess I would say that if what someone says on here allows us to share what we want to be sharing then whatever. Sometimes the comments do enlighten. We each need to make our own decision on that perhaps. But If the information gets hijacked, I agree, ignore.

I also would be supportive of blocking some comments to keep the thread on a useful course. It is meant to inform, get to the clear facts that are being denied and obfuscated other places, so that needs to stay numero uno.

But what I really want to say is that Arnie Gundersen is a brave man and I thank him for speaking out as much as he does.

I'm all for being brave and changing the world, so, in essence, I like your idea. However, since there is sometimes a discrepancy between what is a shill and what is not (same for potential trolls), I don't think it wise to display user's private info on a public site. Furthermore, I doubt that it will be practical or even useful, as resistance and criticism to shills and trolls should be nurtured from within a user by themselves. The user should also learn to disengage said shill/troll of their own volition. Otherwise, what would be the point of displaying everyone's IPs if a headstrong, especially principlistic user wants to keep arguing with some obvious troll asshat?

      • cooterboy

I suspect that there are individuals, you visit this site and comment, that have worked for governmental agencies and signed nondisclosure documents along with oaths of secrecy. Also there are personal reputations and credentials that demand protection. Worse than any shill idiot is the NSA. I can ignore a shill but I cannot ignore those who may have ill intentions.

This action would destroy any reasonable and intelligent person from even visiting this site, let alone make a meaningful contribution. Privacy is a cherished right.

Agreed, there have been individuals here lately whose purpose seems to be to distract participants from sharing meaningful conversation about the topics and stories being presented.

anyone else wondering if arnie is 100% against nukes and really telling us what he knows? like is is holding alot back? then sticks his foot in his mouth…ie the video he did about the FOIA releases and now wont eat fish yet says the beaches are safe??? even after, now multiple videos of high CPM on Geiger…

    • sunpower

Aloha Mindrive. My friend just asked the same question. Why does Arnie talk about all of us getting together to stop hazardous pollution, when it is known there is no clean configuration for nuclear power from the time the cledge leaves the ground in mines? How can you create a lot of DU and hydrogen bombs without stuffing the planet? How exactly do we all join hands to bury the waste when Tepco can't even grout three reactors and stop polluting the ocean? There is no solution to nuke waste and there is no clean way to fix nuclear industry nor will there ever be. So why doesn't Arnie proclaim himself anti nuke? I'm sure many here wonder.
Arnie comes across as scientifically savvy by discussing the superlinearity of the dose response curve, which most anti nuke kids have known about for years. He throws out this truth but then blesses running on hot beaches because he claims it is only natural background.
There is a huge gaping flaw in Arnie's 'logic' however. If the ocean's natural background is the reason for the hot Cali beaches, then all beaches worldwide washed by the oceans would be similarly hot. Are they?
A good friend with capable device tested the beaches in Hawaii after he saw the San Mateo data. Sorry, Arnie but you are so busted. There is no such thing as natural sea contamination going on in Hawaii and your theory old boy does NOT explain that discrepancy between Cali and HI.
Anyone is welcome to duplicate this simple…

  • mindrive mindrive

don't get me wrong he has spoken out way more on this than most, but it is so obvious that the waters and the beaches are becoming more and more radiated so much so that people are going to stop eating fish yet we are told to run on the beach, swim,,that would include kids and kids play in the sand and use a plastic shovel to play in the sand then some will cvhew on the shovel/…the beaches are no longer safe for being on..

    • 250mSv is beyond the limit, especially for kids.

    • sunpower

Don't get me wrong either. I love Arnie to the extent he feels a responsibility to shed some light on things, and he does provide some scratch. That is always a start in the right direction even if he will not say like we do that the goal is shutting down this flawed and dangerous industry.
I am really sorry anyone would downplay this anomaly at San Mateo as if it is natural as that tramples on the precautionary principle. No I do not advise rash judgment in anything, toward any conclusion incl. those I have reached, but sometimes when there is a preponderence of evidence, Occam's Razor might apply. I acknowledge the data Arnie introduced that refutes fission products on the beach, but what I would want to see is a little more indie analysis of that sand, if you please.
Who with a gamma spectrometer can you trust? I find myself reading between the lines alot about what is not said by people posing as authorities on gamma spectroscopy. Basically for all the voodoo awe people pay to the nuklar technocrats, the damn GS device is about the size of a blender, hooked up to a computer.
At my level as a layman and citizen, I merely rely on the logic that I do not see this supposed natural contamination of global beaches happening…no evidence of it in Hawaii.
Show me the beef. The question is open to anyone to prove or disprove whether they have an Inspector or Gammascout or whatever. Please check it out and decide for yourselves.

I was living 10 to 15 miles from this meltdown and almost died of cancer in 1989. My grandmother died of cancer 7 years after this meltdown. My little sister is still in So. Calif. and has just had surgery for her 3rd cancer. My father had horrible skin cancer when he died.

It has been calculated that this meltdown was 260 times worse than TMI. There was neither a primary containment nor a secondary containment.

I took my daughter there when she was 2 years old for 6 weeks and she has already had a rare inoperable cancer. No one ever told me about the meltdown and I only learned about it from reading posts on

All my doctors expected me to die. I had stage 4 cancer. I am only alive because I read a lot about diet and supplements and herbs and have an extremely, extremely restricted vegan diet and drink and cook only with spring water from inside a mountain from a million years old aquifer and avoid all sources of radiation ionizing and non-ionizing and all sources of electromagnetic pollution and all microwaves and other environmental pollutants. I sit 4 feet from my computer hard drive and monitor and it has no wi-fi or cameras. I turn down all x-rays and cat scans. I have no cell phone.

My sister is also downwind from Son Onofre NPP.

Anne that is amazing. I am sorry for all the cancer and health troubles but the way you protect yourself from radiation is extraordinary.
While my diet is restricted and i drink filtered water and eat organic as much as i can afford, i am surrounded by radioadmitting doodads, pcs and tablets and radios and wireless this and that. We keep it all out of the room where the beds are….but we are surrounded by in it nonetheless…specially living and working in a city…..

me too.. I keep wireless off but where I live now I see at least 12 other peoples WiFi's on low reception in my home office. I hate to think about just all the low frequency radiation. comcast has been installing this "double" wifi modem in WA state where they don't tell you (except my install guy did) that eventually they plan to turn on the second wifi and have it broadcast to other comcast users in the area who are on their phones/tablets) I have my wifi turned off but I have no idea if they've turned the other wifi on or not. They will eventually once its approved by the government.
I haven't used a microwave in perhaps a decade, just because I learned back then it's not wise, and I keep my cell phone turned off 99.999% of the time, and I don't have any gadgets in my bedroom, so I do try, but perhaps a lot of it depends on location.
I also eat mostly organic and drink water out of a Berkey filter, It's not just about me though, most people don't do these small things that I have done for years. I also worry about my cats.
bottom line I sit in front of a computer all day and I read from a kindle (but on airplane mode)

After leaking the gases, they discovered that the winds were headed toward the San Fernando Valley. All of our families lived [there] and all that radiation went over their homes.”

A 2006 report by David A. Lochbaum, the nuclear safety engineer with the Union of Concerned Scientists, determined that up to 30 percent of the reactor’s radioiodine and cesium could have vaporized during the accident."

wtf?????? little kids cleaning up the mess???

California has mobilized hundreds of thousands of citizens to clean up debris along the beaches, including debris from the 2011 Japanese Tsunami. This catastrophic event resulted in radioactive debris being sent into the Pacific ocean from the severely damaged Fukushima Diiachi Nuclear Power Plant. Volunteer debris collectors clean up any debris they find and gather critical information about the Japanese tsunami debris using a comprehensive data card. It is as if each volunteer is a guinea-pig in a massive experiment.

    • A war is needed, including civilian enlistments, but keep the kids out of it.

    • KiloCharley KiloCharley

This is appalling! No children should be there at all. Uniformed parents that mean well I'm sure, putting their children at great risk. This is precisely why information should not be withheld. The public has a right to know the truth. Nice gesture, cleaning up the beach and all, but this is akin to watching a child walk in front of an oncoming train and doing nothing. I am sickened by this report! Seriously, sick! Thanks mindrive for sharing, I need to punch a wall or politician or something…

      • TooExpensiveToMatter

Kids shouldn't be cleaning up trash no matter what kind it is (unless it happens to be in their own yard and they made the mess, of course)

This is just child abuse, plain and simple.

I thought there were laws in the US against child labor.

Can't you go to jail for engaging in that?

Who (at what government agency) is responsible for this program?

I would think if enough people wrote to their Congressman/woman and made a big stink, someone would take note.

      • Crash2Parties Crash2Parties

No worries; "The tsunami washed the debris out to sea well before the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant went into meltdown, so radiation should not be an issue. "

See? Same site, different page (Coastal commission). It's all good.

But seriously – even ignoring that kids are most vulnerable to radiation and it's pretty clear that if the debris is here so is the radiation…what if a child picks up medical waste?

CPS should have teams waiting at the beaches, IMO, to educate people about what is and is not appropriate to have children do.

Eating out, over Christmas? Well at a restaurant one can attempt to avoid potentially contaminated food.

I sat silent on Monday as fish and shellfish were consumed; I ordered only an entree. Why did I not address the issue with my lunch companions? Come now, 🙂 even my daughter declares "I don't want to hear about Nuclear, I have enough problems!" That, when I asked how far she would be from a particular nuclear plant, as she tossed up between two University appointments. The one she was inclined towards, was some one hundred miles from a plant that was leaking radioactive waste.

However, she accepted the other. One month later, an explosion occurred in the vicinity of her new appointment, within approximately the same radius as the other; reports defines it as non-radioactive and 'not of concern.' Neither are on the Coast!

At a private dinner party, it is harder to contend with. Recently I avoided the rice, played with the chicken dish…said nothing. The following day, the hostess telephoned, to apologise for the 'dreadful meal.' Did I say anything? No. People cannot cope. I have for some time attempted to mention concerns. But on more than one occasion, I have been informed that there is enough to worry about without any additional information. They've heard, they've chosen to ignore, they close the topic with 'there is, after all nothing we can do.'

Yes and if you take too much c it will take the calcium out of your bones , careful of your calcium sources as well . Stock.. The liposomal C from Amazon is awesome although I am preparing to buy an ultrasonic and make my own cheaper. I wish I had been getting it in early 2012 when the Tokyo Trots nearly killed my family over a three month span. The fires from Fukushima were massive in December 2011 to late February 2012. If you knew someone in America who died suddenly in that time frame then it was a result of the worst nuclear fallout since the Chinese blast of 1966 and the March to June 2011 fallout from Fukushima Daiichi.

Nuclear researchers will reveal that data someday. Dead men walking won't keep secrets.

No supplement of any kind is an adequate replacement for the naturally-occuring nutrient it is trying to be. Proper nutrition eliminates any need for supplements. There is no such thing as a "vitamin", just as there is no such thing as a "weed".

Want "vitamin C"? Pine needles contain 300 times the "Vitamin C" as an orange. All pine needles are edible, but don't take my word for it…Look up James Sloane, Susan Weed, Frank Cook, David Hoffman, Mathew Wood, Arthur Haines,Jim McDonald, David Winston, Blanche Cyble Derby, "Green Dean" at EatTheWeeds, Martin Crawford, Bill Mollison, Geoff Lawton, Sepp Holzer, Simon Mills, and Markus Rothkranz to name a few.

Most of these people are herbalists…and none of them are trying to sell you a product. Never spend another dime on your health…everything you ever needed has been in your land all along…you've just been mowing it and poisoning it instead of respecting it and protecting it.

My comment is in relation to Sam and Sickputer (whom I hold in high regard), but is for everyone here. Exhaust the information provided by the herbalists I mentioned, and I bet you'll never purchase a product again.

Also, get yourself a field guide to edible wild plants in your region.

Owning a lawn mower–or any other gas or electric device of the sort–is a sure sign that there is still more progress to be made.

              Best to all.

Don't forget: Despite what I just said above…if nuclear is allowed to continue to exist, the contaminants will work their way into the living bodies of the plants and animals and waters that we all need to survive…such that the very things that give you life will begin to end it.

Thus there is only one solution: Abolish nuclear in all forms, immediately and forever. The creation of these materials is crime against life itself.

lipo C, you can make your own easily and cheaply. But beware that absorption is at best twice regular ascorbic acid and only at levels above 5 grams. Way less than IV C. Phospholipids may have their own benefit. Frequent dosing of regular C is adequate for large doses and is the secret either way, as half life is still short with lipo C. Its not absorbed intact but digested in the small intestine.

        • Sickputer

Absorption of lipospheric (aka liposomal Vitamin C) may well be just twice the regular capsules of oral Vitamin C. I am one of the growing number of "anecdotal" supporters. Works for me very well. Twice as nice as oral.

I am not completely surprised the world's preeminent vitamin C researchers into vitamin C have absolutely zero studies on liposomal Vitamin C:

"Another formulation of vitamin C, liposomal-encapsulated vitamin C (e.g., Lypo-spheric™ vitamin C) is now commercially available. However, data regarding the bioavailability of liposomal-encapsulated vitamin C are not currently available."

          Linus Pauling Institute

SP: A 2008 study in the UK was positive for liposomal Vitamin C in fighting cancer but the final report was mysteriously deep-sixed. I think a cheap cancer drug is not on the fast track for the medical industry. Vitamin C does not create big pharma money.

Howard Hughes used massive amounts of squeezed oranges to heal after one of his plane crashes.

Now we hear the Japanese are using intravenous and Liposomal Vitamin C for the workers at Fukushima NPP. Coincidence?

Arnie Gundersen is a good man.

Words cannot express my gratitude that he is with us.

Remember, everyone: It's not just the fish, themselves…it's everything they are used in. That means those vitamins you've been giving your kids that contain concentrated fish oils as a means of supplying omega 3…

And all of the industrial farmland that uses fish emulsions (and other fish products) as "fertilizer" on the fields…they are inadvertantly transporting radionuclides from the fish in the ocean directly into the soil that all of your plants and animals are taking into their bodies.

Even the marijuana growers are using these fish-derived "fertilizers" because they think the crap they buy in plastic bags that says "organic" on it is how to grow plants…

  • razzz razzz

I have said before I like then and maybe a few others that appear trustworthy.

The body has a hard time with inorganic minerals (no carbon attached via photosynthesis) probably useless to toxic in larger doses. So vitamin manufactures try prepare their pills and capsules to help the body absorb them as in natural uptake. There are always exceptions but the body usually recycles everything someway or another by producing synthetics when rearranging amino acids. Proteins are to large to be assimilated through the intestinal walls and have to breaks down into amino acids to pass thru. Body converts sugars to other uses and so on. Eating proteins only has them breakdown into amino acids which the body reassembles into its own proteins that are needed (via the liver, bone, etc)…it is all quite fascinating.

Off topic I think. If a Rad counter picks up high counts of C1317/1, what else left Fukushima by air & sea? PU & uranium, all 6 plants were using MOX fuel, so if you detect high rads it could be or all of the deadly rads sent to us by GE & Tepco! OK.

  • humptydumpty humptydumpty

I already stopped eating shrimp due to its probable sourcing in the Gulf of Mexico. There needs to be a law passed requiring labeling or available information of the source location.

Maybe when extensive testing gets underway — and this will probably be increasingly demanded as more people become informed — distinctions can be made between frequencies and levels of radiation detected in different types of seafood: wild caught vs. farmed fish, and fresh or frozen vs canned, large vs. small organisms, etc. The cans of white albacore tuna (they have the least mercury content) that I have in stock, have a sell-by date but no packing date, so that makes it harder to gauge the risk. Another important product that comes from the ocean is seaweed, which I have read can help protect against absorption of Iodine radioisotopes.

Arnie Gunderson would be a trustworthy consultant to the seafood industry and for many other products, in helping to devise a protocol for testing, reporting, publication and labeling. I don't trust the EPA or other govt agencies in this regard.

As for swimming in the Pacific — I think it's too cold now without a wetsuit. But those brave folks that want to take the plunge and enjoy the beaches probably will want to do so while there's still a fairly low risk. Within a year, the radiation is likely to become worse. It will always be risky, though, and the main concern is possibly swallowing or breathing hot particles or taking them in through…

I look at Arnie like I look at the the number of hammers I have in my toolbox. They range from a 4oz ball peen to a 6 lb double jack in steel with different configurations and even some I've ground myself, brass hammer, lead hammer, even wooden dowel with 2 holes into which I can insert a rod to use it as a handle or a hammer…Even at that point, and even though my box has wheels, I've been in situations in which what I had wasn't quite what I needed. So, one just has to use what's at one's disposal. If I have a 12oz ball peen in my back pocket, am 60 ft off the ground and my box is 2 blocks from where I am I will use that hammer. It may take the effort of sixty blows from that which could be accomplished with one swipe of the double jack, and, besides that I may mishit at times from all those swings and the lack of coordination that results from such repetitive muscle motions, but in the end it gets done. A statement like this from Arnie is of the 12oz variety, not the 6 lb variety that you might wish, but hey…For millenia they just used rocks. It could be worse.

    BAD FISH…January 11, 2014

A fish contaminated with extremely high levels of radiation was found in waters near the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant, a government-affiliated research institute said.

The Fisheries Research Agency said Jan. 10 the black sea bream had 12,400 becquerels per kilogram of radioactive cesium, 124 times the safety standards for foodstuffs.

The fish was caught at the mouth of the Niidagawa river in Iwaki, Fukushima Prefecture, on Nov. 17. The site is 37 kilometers south of the stricken power plant.

It was one of 37 fish-–all black sea bream–that researchers caught in waters in and off Iwaki in October and November to study the level of radiation to which they were exposed.

The research institute said it will study the fish further to try and determine when it became contaminated with such high levels of radioactive cesium……

    • mungo mungo

Two other fish also exceeded the safety standards of 100 becquerels per kilogram, at 426 becquerels and 197 becquerels, respectively.

The readings of the remaining 34 fish were within the safety limits, according to the Fisheries Research Agency.

Officials said black sea bream in the region that was covered by the recent study have not been circulated as food in fish markets.

Black sea bream fishing in coastal waters off Fukushima and Miyagi prefectures is currently restricted.

They are also on the list of fish that local fishermen are asked to voluntarily refrain from catching in the northern municipalities of Ibaraki Prefecture, which is located just south of Fukushima Prefecture.
