Follow-up to: Tepco Presentation to Officials: "Crowd went nuts... they started screaming... they were flat, then the loudest crowd I've ever heard" -- "Enormous amount of distrust in Japan" (VIDEO)
In this August 31, 2012 footage from KTV Tokyo, the only microphone on for most of the uproar is Tepco’s, so crowd noise is only picked up during the end at ~1:05 in:
Fairewinds’ Chief Engineer Arnie Gundersen “discuss[ed] safety problems at Fukushima Daiichi Unit 4’s spent fuel pool with Tokyo Electric when he met with Diet members.”

Arnie, a lone voice, is doing what the NRC, with its 4,000 employees and one BILLION dollar budget, should be doing.
Report Comment
Or what the IAEA, with its 2,400 employees and $400 MILLION dollar a year budget, should be doing (25% of which comes from the U.S. Department of State)
(Note: In 2008, former Indiana Sen. Lugar called the IAEA's budget a "shoe string budget.")
Can you imagine what Arnie could accomplish with that "shoe string" budget?

Hi Mack. Thank you very much for this useful information. Would you please provide a link to your source or sources? It would be great to be able to track this kind of expenditure. IMHO the public has a right to know.

Thanks, skizexq. I have always loved Thomas Dolby's music. That song is so apropos today, given Enenews has followed developments in the Gulf since the BP oil spill, the recent salt dome debacle (ongoing), and now the lovely news there is at least one EMPTY !!!! SFP at Fukushima.
Thomas Dolby is a genius. I hope the human race survives with a more or less intact gene pool so future generations can be blessed with genius like that belonging to Thomas Dolby.

Here's another good one. 'Love this guy's music, too. This song is personally very moving for me. I feel like I'm living through a slow motion "On the Beach."
HoTaters knew Howie when he was just a lad and touched down in Northern CA on a brief hiatus.
The song below is beautiful. I hope our children's children will have a future. This is a song about the writer's (musician's) daughter leaving home. He is saying goodbye. It could also be a goodbye song for someone who is dying. Moves me to tears.

Here's another one, written by Howard Jones to his daughter, who had grown up and was leaving home. It is also fitting, as it could describe someone dying and passing on to the next world.

Thanks from me too, skizexq! I'm hopelessly out of touch with current artists and only learn of them when someone brings them to my attention. (It's almost necessary – I usually can't concentrate on anything but music when I hear it, then get involved and neglect other stuff!) I didn't know of Dolby. I viewed the video and *loved* the imagery selected!! I've bookmarked the piece – hope to check out Dolby further!

Sorry Admin, not OK. Given the long history of engagement from myself and others on this blog, headlines like this , which on face value FINALLY break a critical silence, must IMHO be substantial. This is not, so appears like the hyperbole that other critics have accused enenews of but that I've disagreed with. Not this time. This is rubbish.
Gundersen asks specifically about fuel pool 4 fuel, so if that official is saying that there's no fuel in the pool, it would be the first time to my knowledge that a TEPCO official admits that it's all burned away. Except of course the two fresh assemblies that were removed for inspection a month ago.
Lies lies and more lies. Please do not post misleading headlines that are not substantiated by the content of the post. I love this site, and am deeply grateful for the work that you (all?) must put in to it. Thanks. HOWEVER, I think it is very important that all of us here are measured, objective, and accurate. The credibility of our search for truth, and the honesty that we are demanding of officials and government, must also be our own benchmark.
Here, look at the corroded caps of the fuel assemblies, and ask 'how did that metal top get lost'? From 1.27 many canisters appear completely empty.

Opinions please!
I wondered about that assertion also?
Is it true that there are no fuel rods left intact to burn in unit 4?
I personally think that the images we saw in March of 2012 of unit 4 with the black stuff all over the side indicated that something had happened to the building in the late winter or early spring.
That was my contention all along because the building looked different. I have screen shots. I'll try and post on my blog today.

There were an awful lot of burning, flashing things on the webcams for months and months, beginning shortly after the 1st of the new year (2012). Recently, steam coming out of the ground and what looks like phreatic explosions. Something has been burning, steaming, and flashing. You've got to wonder.

Those were not removed from the spent fuel pool. If you look at the alignment of the removal relative to the RPV lid/lifter, you can see they are pulling these from the reactor pool, not the spent fuel pool. Just more TEPCO nonsense to hide something from the public.

“ TEPCO officials announced that as of October 3, they will begin accepting claims from victims of the Fukushima nuclear disaster, including evacuees and those suffering psychological damage, for the period beginning June 1 and after. Those eligible may request up to five years’ worth of compensation in one lump sum. Payments will begin at the end of October.”

Hi arclight
Wonder who will compensate the people here who now have nodes on their lungs, lumps on their thyroid, new heart problems, the medical bills, the bills they will have because they are to sick to work, and the psychological damage that this is/will cause here?
Daughter was in emergency room with erratic heart and blood pressure..from their scan they found nodes on lungs..They have been watching it.
She now has a lump on her thyroid..they will also watch that..they just took some more blood samples.
I feel like we are doing their step by step examinations wonder how many steps before she is referred to an oncologist.
BTW..Her new husband was just diagnosed with nodes on his lungs.
There are many there and here who don't even know, they have something yet.

Compensation is only possibly if a person can prove cause and effect.
The government and corp. are doing everything they can to eliminate that possibility, just like they did historically in many other places…

Does anyone know what they are going to do with people in Japan who want to evacuate and are now contaminated? Excuse my lack of knowledge but how do the de contaminate them? I would think this poses a problem with evacuation at this juncture because of the high level of contamination.
Report Comment
Moon: The government will do nothing at all. There will be no official evacuation order, so that the government can avoid the ruinous expense. People who evacuate voluntarily will simply carry the contamination with them. Japanese expats may not be welcomed in many areas, once the affects of contamination become well known.
Report Comment
I know how inflammatory this may sound but it is a concern I think? I mean, I want to help the people in Japan but how do you evacuate contaminated individuals without exposing healthy children to possible contamination or am I mistaken would this not pose a problem. Sorry if this sounds ridiculous but from what I've read this sounds valid. Thank you for your time.

Moon: Look at the fear of radioactive contamination that is exhibited inside of Japan, directed at their own:
"The Daily Telegraph said that officials were demanding that evacuees provide certificates proving they have not been exposed to contamination.
"The newspaper said a clinic in Fukushima City refused treatment to an 8-year-old girl for a skin rash. Her family was living in a shelter after abandoning their home in Minamisoma, 18 miles from the nuclear plant.
"The newspaper noted that the prejudice was similar to the ostracism that survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 experienced."
http://erickaecourtney.wordpress.com/tag/hospitals-turn-away-japanese-refugees-for-fear-of-contamination-of-radiation/
I'm of the opinion that you can only die from radiation once. Everyone is getting lumps on their thyroids. Everyone is getting nodules in their lungs. (I have one I can feel in my left lung that I can read with a geiger counter). The time to have avoided all this was when the first nuclear power plants were proposed. But the people allowed the death machines to be built. Now there are so many that their design flaws will be the end of the human race on earth.
If you want to take in Japanese refugees, you are free to do so. Take them from the airport to the store to buy new clothes and shoes. Leave their old ones in garbage bag. No suitcases allowed in the house.

If they say there is nothing that can burn in the fuel pool, they are lying. Because the zirconium shieldings of the fuel rods are highly reactive (that means chemically reactive to water), when the temperature rises. Then this zirconium releases enormous amounts of hydrogen gas.

The coriums especially are susceptible to renewed criticality in the event an earthquake cracks open new fissures close to the blobs and lots of water covers more surface area of the fuel. Huge quantities of water are already hanging around underground and more to come with the approaching typhoon.
Any news of the eight relief water wells Tepco was supposedly drilling to relieve underground aquifer flow? You would think that measure wouldn't require months to accomplish.
Any large earthquake af Fukushima NPP can wreak havoc with the coriums and the spent fuel ponds.
Report Comment
The Relief Water Wells were part of a Cofferdam and Well Project. TEP.gov had become alarmed at the massive amounts of radioactivity in the groundwater flowing through and beneath the complex, and out into the Pacific Ocean. The destruction of the Pacific Seafood Industry had become a certainty unless the flow of highly contaminated groundwater could be stopped. The idea was to block the flow of groundwater by installation of a cofferdam at the edge of the ocean for 1 km. Behind the buildings, uphill from the shore, water wells would intercept the ground water flowing towards the ocean. This water would be tested, and dumped into the ocean, bypassing the 3 Rogue Nuclear Reactors located underneath the ruins of the complex. This is conjecture: What would happen in the 3 Rogue Nuclear Reactors should the flow of cooling ground water be stopped, and the level of ground water lowered? Rogue Nuclear Reactors1,2,&3 would heat up, probably boiling the remaining ground water. TEP.gov must have concluded that the destruction of the Pacific Ocean was a smaller problem than having three nuclear volcanos steaming and spewing enough radiation into the atmosphere to finally require the evacuation of Japan. At this time, we began to see lots of discussion about "dilution". The contamination of the Pacific Ocean was OK because there was enough water to dilute the radiation. In short, TEP.gov can't slow or stop the flow of ground water cooling Rogue Nucler Reactors1,2,&3.

If there is nothing in the pool to burn, why is 99 percent of the information from Fukushima about spent fuel pools? All empty fuel assemblies with fuel burning a half mile into the earth? When life gives you lemons make lemonade. Using the photoelectric effect, someone should invent a way to harness the radiation and convert it to electrical force. Maybe that is already on TEPCO's to-do list.
