Title: Arnold Gundersen with another update on the unfolding effects of the Fukushima disaster
Source: KPFT Houston, If You Love This Planet Radio
Date: Aug 31, 2012

This week, Dr. Caldicott brings on nuclear engineer Arnold Gundersen to update readers on the unfolding effects of the Fukushima meltdowns and what is happening with nuclear power in other parts of the world [...]

At 8:50 in

Gundersen: The big problem is going to be — Have these things been distorted by the earthquake or heat during the process, or by rubble falling on them. They may not be able to pull them. They may get on them and try to pull them and try to lift and they’ll be jammed. Then that’s another problem. We’ll see as time develops. Unfortunately, they’re taking way too long.

or maybe the second they are out of water they will fry whoever or whatever is attempting the extraction. I know their condition. Either crushed or fused, embedded with dirt or bits of concrete…their condition is LETHAL

also, is it possible to give the bickering between the "Love Arnie" and "Hate Arnie" camps a rest? It is getting tiresome and distracting. Debate what he says, not his motives.

‪Compare the boil up of reactors in the clips below with the last frames of this clip of SFP4. Is that water sloshing over the side of the SFP?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYNGxWWG6K4

Plenty of corrosion, or the caps of the fuel assemblies missing…burned off? What's absolutely certain is assembles are dammaged, have been soaking in salt water, and could fall apart if moved…

This time Arnie potentially could be right.

For a detailed debris map in the SFP 4 see here:
    http://ex-skf.blogspot.de/2012/04/fukushima-i-nuke-plant-reactor-4-spent.html

But it won't be a big problem as they could just grout the stuff that cannot be removed from the SFP.

"… two new fuel assemblies [were removed] from the Fukushima Unit 4 spent fuel pool… actually it’s not a spent fuel pool, they’re in their own storage area. So it wasn’t indicative of what’s going on in the spent fuel pool, that’s where you store new fuel."

    From: Enenews..

So yes ..it is a matter of what is going on in the spent fuel pool.
While I have it in the cue..I'm postin a clip of a 6.3 hitting the reactors June 3 2011

For those that wonder if an earthquqke will effect the reactors.

The spent fuel can not be in the condition that Mr.Gunderesen described.
Unit 4 for suffered a major destructive episode and lost cooling.
Spent fuel burns with loss of cooling.

Excellent evidence. An earthquake of sufficient magnitude or a related event which shakes up the pool into explosion could release 1200 PBq of Sr90 which perhaps is the amount that was released during peak discharge of Mar 11 2011 earthquake and explosion and meltdown. The 1200 PBq of Sr90 of source released means 84 million infant mortalities in India alone based on 33.2 million infant mortalities for India from 1945 to 1997 because of the release of a total of 477 PBq. My blog shortly will release details of my work in this regard. International cooperation is therefore being urged in various official quarters in Japan and elsewhere according to enenews reports here.

        Ref:meserve letter 032201.pdf
"Another source of global Sr-90 is the result of the April 1986 Chernobyl accident.
Approximately 8 PBq (216,000 curies) of Sr-90 were released into the atmosphere. Apart from
childhood thyroid cancer (attributable to radio iodine ingestion), no increase in overall cancer
incidence or mortality has been observed that can be attributed to ionizing radiation from the
        Chernobyl accident (UNSCEAR 2000)."
According to my calculations Chernobyl resulted in 579200 infant mortalities in India. See Table IMINA in
        http://deathdealersnukes.blogspot.com
Thus the Fukushima release of Sr90 of 1200 PBq during March 2011 would result in 86.88 million infant mortalities in India alone.
The 84 million infant mortalities due to Fukushima stated above thus tallies closely with this figure. This would be over a period of about 50 years into the future based on the 477 PBq released during 1945 to 1997. The figure of 477 PBq Sr 90 release is for the Northern Hemisphere.
I will continue this discussion later further.

There is no separate new fuel storage pool. There are 3 cavities on the refueling floor, the spent fuel pool, the equipment pool, and the reactor cavity-that is just the top of the reactor pressure vessel. Fuel can only be stored in the spent fuel pool. The engineer who stated one existed last week must of worked at a PWR not a BWR.
Arnie is correct with his concerns, they are right on base. The new fuel is stored away from hot bundles in the pool and might have been removed easily because they were off to the side. These fuel bundles fit into the racks with about one inch of tolerance. So it certainly would be very easy for them to get jammed. And it is taking way too long-and there must be some reason for that. There must have been about 150 new fuel bundles in the pool, but they only removed 2 of them. Why???
The logical assumption would be there are problems in the pool, and they do not have the answers yet.

  • The 'day of truth' will come Arnie.
That's the REAL PROBLEM isn't it?

That there are MULTIPLE BIG problems:

    1. The situation there is, and has been for some time now, a world changing catastrophic 'man-responsible' event.
(People just don't get it… yet.)

    2. Without a doubt, this mega disaster will get worse in ways that are unimaginable.
(ie… fuel rods, earthquakes, pipes, melted cores, salt water, radiation metal fatigue… etc…)

    3. The overwhelming contamination of our planet has occurred and will continue to accumulate. Simply stated, 'it's overwhelming'!
(air, water, soil… then food, then you, if not already!)

    4. Getting people to truly understand the importance of 'mitigation' techniques for fallout, without panic.
(It might be possible to ease the panic, but stopping the 'anger' when masses of people realize how they've been duped and how this debacle will affect their children, the picture may not be so pretty.)

    5. many many more…
    _

It's been known by those in the nuclear industry, from day one, that this was going to be a Public Relations nightmare and at all cost the majority of citizens must never to know the truth. Done in the name of Homeland Security, secrecy for your own good, or something like that.

A real President/Leader would break the silence.
A newscaster, like Brain Williams, should 'go rogue', live on-air.
Where does the Pope stand on this?

Please, one of you, somebody, let the people…

I told my dog diamond the truth. He looked up at me as if understanding, then reached around and licked his privates. I told my brother the truth and he lit a smoke and said "What do you want me to do about it?". Face it folks. Our goose is cooked. The lutefisk stinks. The milk is sour. Remember, dog spelled backwards is God. And may he bless us all.

ChasAha, There *is* evidence that "thought travels". Not only travels, but may be received. I don't want seem to have drunk too much "woo woo" kool-aid but a kind of "telepathy" may cause concerns posted here to reach a far wider audience than the ENE community. Keep in mind that ENE is far from the only site where anit-nuke concerns are constantly expressed. Someone walking down a street won't catch a post word-for-word, or even catch "clear" general understanding. But that person might discover him/herself more attuned to news tidbits about nuclear issues. The person won't likely experience this as "a message coming from somewhere", ("voices" are not a 'healthy' experience for most people) – it will be more like a "noticing something as a growing concern." The person may say to a friend: "Have you noticed growing concern about nuclear safety?" and the friend might say – "Yeah – been thinking about it myself, not sure what got me started."

Obviously I can't *promise* this is happening, but there's evidence it is among possibilities. My point is meant to reassure. Spelling out alarm and examining details here at ENE is one way of contribution to that "spreading awareness". Without some people talking about nuclear safety there'd be no word to "spread". Also – so long as we don't compromise our own health, "energy" of expression is supposed to "amplify" this kind of "transmission". (more…)

We have no control at all over the speed at which awareness might "catch on". Nor do we have control over what people with considerable political/economic power do to "fix" issues as they understand them. BUT – so long as we keep sharing, we may be "spreading the word" in more ways than by direct communication. The more "ordinary people" become concerned, the more their sheer numbers will begin to influence those making decisions.

I'm often stunned at people who're totally unaware, but then again – once I bring it up, they are! Also – I know "thought communication" approaches "fanciful dreaming", but it may also be a possibility.

The truth re nuclear is "on the loose".

(I do *not* advise intentional "energetic sending". From what little I may know, it's at least a health risk and can lead to expectations followed by worry looking for "proof" it works. I would suggest doing what you already do, but keeping in mind you may be having more effect than you realize.)

Other moments – notice little wonders close at hand! (Children playing, a flower, etc.)

The whole interview with Arnie was very good. Helen asks thoughtful questions and corrects Arnie when needed. I wondered if she heard him say Hippocritic" instead of Hippocratic and she corrected him the second time he misspoke. He took it in good fun and made a pun out of his mispronunciation ("those Hippocritical physicians in Japan".

Notable notes: Coriums not likely now to meltdown but will require water cooling for at least another 6 years.
Core cleanup impossible by humans for many years because of the radiation emissions.

Radioactive water in turbine buildings emits 1 million becquerels per liter per second.. Much higher levels in Units 1-3 reactor buildings.

Cesium resin is building up from the filtering systems and respresents a very longterm toxic waste problem.
No place in Japan is capable of safe longterm radiation waste storage because of seismic activity over 250,000 years.
Helen fears much foreign waste may come to Australia for longterm storage… Cites Halliburton rail line to a waste dump that is close to a precious Australian aquifer.

    Questions I might have asked:

A lot more questions about bioaccumulation estimates for the Japanese prefectures.

Are central and north central Japan crops highly hazardous?
Are any prefectures fairly safe at present?

What about the Japanese east coast water contamination? As the ocean radiation contamination grows over this decade how will radiation levels compare to previous ocean spills?
