Japan pumps water into reactor to contain radioactivity, Deutsche Presse-Agentur, June 20, 2011:
TEPCO also began late Sunday to release air containing radioactive substances from the building of reactor 2 by opening its doors.
An estimated 1.6 billion becquerels of radioactive materials were released, compared with 500 million becquerels when the double doors of the building of reactor 1 were opened in May, the Jiji Press agency reported, citing TEPCO.

I suspect that figure doesn’t amount to much, on the scale of what we’ve been talking about. Not to downplay any additional release, just saying.

Report Comment
NO. Radiation is an invisible shotgun, blasting your dna and cells away.
Report Comment
No, radiation refers more to a transfer of energy and they are many types. Alpha is a helium nucleus spawned by a splitting atom and is extremely chemically reactive with the first atom that it touches. Beta particles are like electrons spawned from atoms undergoing a change in energy and gamma rays are like X-rays. All cause changes in chemistry or cell functions

Becquerels are counts.
Think quantity.
Nothing more.
Becquerels do not offer any delineation between alpha, beat, gamma or neutron energy levels.
Just nuclear event.
Now if they were to distinguish Bq/m2/sec then we have a complete measurement.
Sieverts are an equivalent exposure rate.
With rate being the important term and concept.
Many of the news stories I have been seeing seem to be missing an important detail.
They report Bq/m2 or Bq/kg.
The way to understand the problem is what period of time was used for the measurement. Or what is assumed.
Bq/m2/sec? (per second?)
If the unit of time is seconds, implied, then fine. But I have never seen that clarified in any of the stories I have seen.
Sort of like if some one took their Gieger counter and measured 1uSv/hour in their back yard.
It would not make any sense at all if they posted “Hey every body, I have 1uSv in my back yard!”
This is essentially identical to the common MSM (well rounded degree in Journalism, hence not as sharp as they would like to think) problem of distinguishing the difference between voltage and current, or voltage and energy, or energy and watts.
Mainly because they do not understand the differences.
The units are different and have no conversion between themselves.
It is like trying to discuss how much energy is associated with a temperature.
Or how loud is blue.
Or what a mile smells like.
(Operative assumption….one is not trippin’)
The problem with this latest story is that whatever the source was that emitted all of the Bq that was measures is, for all practicality, still doing it. Just not in front of the measurement device they used at the doors.
The report describes it more like a gallon of something was spilled instead of a gallon per second pipe just got fully ruptured and is still spewing.

The Whole papal Nuke Industry is based on hoaxes, distortions, lies:
- A rto L auri found a periodic table book written in thirties. These books have been handpicked and destroyed by the nukeCosa Nostra… The book displays the radiation etc: 50 types of Uranium fuel radiation only 4 are measured!
- A Nuke Reactor ‘loses’ half a ton of fuel a year; vanishes, disappears… Where do these ultra hi radiating particles go? It radiates through all walls onto you and your kids, 1000miles around… see video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4rc37dRCI4w (repost)
- BetaFlare – explained, proven by A rto … no wonder why NCR is after him!
- Uranium reserves have already been depleted: the mining/enrichment process uses 10kW DieselOil energy to produce 1kW Nuke ‘energy’ …
- Each 4kW nukeproduced, 3 are pumped into sea as waste

Thank you for the excellent explanation, fireguyjeff. I suspect that one of the reasons why there is so little concern about the seriousness of Fukushima and the two Nevada plants is that the layman cannot understand the difference between becquerels, millisieverts, microsieverts, and curies. (I am old enough to think in curies.) This confusion is doubtless of benefit to those who want to keep the public misinformed.
Report Comment
37×10^10 bq is equivalent to 1 sievert and I think 1 Sv = 1 curie so 1.6×10^10 bq = 1.6/37 x 10^10 = ~ 0.04 Sv
Report Comment
The following is from:
http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/nuclear/radrisk.html
“Activity of Radioactive Source
• 1 curie = amount of material that will produce 3.7 x 1010 nuclear decays per second.
• 1 becquerel = amount of material which will produce 1 nuclear decay per second.
• 1 curie = 3.7 x 1010 becquerels.
The bequerel is the more recent SI unit for radioactive source activity.
Biologically Effective Dose
The biologically effective dose in rems is the radiation dose in rads multiplied by a “quality factor” which is an assessment of the effectiveness of that particular type and energy of radiation. For alpha particles the relative biological effectiveness (rbe) may be as high as 20, so that one rad is equivalent to 20 rems. However, for x-rays and gamma rays, the rbe is taken as one so that the rad and rem are equivalent for those radiation sources. The sievert is equal to 100 rems.”

We used to have a problem stacking unfinished smoke detectors with .1 microcurie americium sources. When the non-conduction layer of the circuit board was hit by the alpha particles of the board below, a charge set up. A pile of 50,000 unfinished smoke detector parts would form a battery that developed enough charge to deliver a significant enough shock to damage many of the detectors and cause enough pain and swearing to know when someone was moving them. We ended up needing to put dissipative separators between them. One decay was the equivalent of two electrons in a capacitor.

Phytoremediation: You can grow plants that help eliminate radiation in the soil

An interesting link.
And it includes this caveat:
“While phytoremediation is promising, it is not without problems. For example, saturated biomass still has to be disposed of properly. Plants chosen for phytoremediation should be chosen to be unappealing to foragers who may put radionuclides back into the food chain. Biomass must be treated as dangerous waste and cannot be composted back into the garden. Burning the harvested material alone is not a solution either, as the ash itself will be saturated with potentially toxic levels of radiation.

Could anyone living in these areas tell me honestly, is really no panic in Japan. Do people really are not afraid of the own health and live and more over their children. Isn’t Tokyo too contaminated, and people live there are not endangered.
Doesn’t the government provide any evacuation plan. Why the world does’t try to save the Japanese.
Is there really nothing threatened them. Is this true?
I believe in every other country in this case would have been terrible screams and panic.
After all the metropolitan area of Tokyo is 30 million people.
Is it possible exodus? What’s going on? Does anyone know?

I’m partly Japanese and right now, I’m in Europe after leaving Japan 3 weeks ago. Whenever I meet Japanese people at the restaurant, I ask them if they are worried. Everyone is but only slightly. They think it’s a fukushima issue, a localized problem. If I tell them it’s serious even for Tokyo, they will be like, “Oh yeah.. oh I guess because of the monsoon rain…”
They basically don’t have a clue. Regardless of the monsoon rain, that comes from south east asia and therefore goes through tokyo before it goes through fukushima, they don’t get the fact Tokyo is only 270km from an off the scale nuclear disaster. That’s what I call ignorance. Ignorance of the Chernobyl example. If they knew people in some parts of France, 2000km from Chernobyl, were greatly affected, they would understand the magnitude of the disaster.
But I believe governments all over the world, especially France, are in total denial. They want to prevent people from having the Fukushima example the same way they told the French people the Chernobyl nuclear plume stopped at the French/Swiss border. I’m in FRance now, you guessed it, and there’s a complete media blackout. People here don’t know it’s serious. One of my friend who used to work in Japan even told me last week, “I heard there’s almost no radiation release anymore…”, and that he was planning a trip to Japan this summer and was gonna stay in tokyo 2 weeks…. Insanity if you ask me… but you have to realize that’s what people who don’t read sites like enenews will believe. Their mind is subject to what the mass media and policy makers at the very top want the population to perceive.
I would say it’s very important people who are aware don’t just post to each other on this blog. GO tell people what you know, spread the news. This is the only way people will deconstruct the lies they are told and fight against the spread of nuclear power… Otherwise, Fukushima will become another Chernobyl… An isolated incident due to human incompetence, that killed only 32 liquidators. Fukushima will have killed only 2 or 5.. most of them of heart attack, not radiation exposure, of course!!
So spread the word now before the sheep get slaughtered “en masse”.
And let’s not forget, nuclear accidents don’t just cause human health issues here and now. It’s the health of all living things on this planet that is at stake for the next few centuries and millennium. Let’s not let them risk our planet for short term profit. After all this is the only habitable planet in the solar system from what we know.

What about Spirulina?
Russian patent awarded for Spirulina as a medicine to reduce allergic reactions from radiation sickness
Petaluma, CA January 2, 1995: A Russian patent was awarded for the use of spirulina as a medical food for improving immunity of the Children of Chernobyl. Studies showed that 270 children, living in highly radioactive areas, had chronic radiation sickness and elevated levels of Immunoglobulin E (IgE), a marker for high allergy sensitivity. Thirty five pre school children were prescribed 20 Spirulina tablets per day (about 5 grams) for 45 days. Consuming Spirulina lowered the levels of IgE in the blood, which in turn, normalized allergic sensitivities in the body.
Spirulina is a safe whole food consumed by traditional peoples for centuries. It has been enjoyed by millions of people as a natural food supplement in the USA, Japan and Europe for over 15 years. This edible blue-green algae is 60% all-vegetable protein, easy-to-digest, with the highest food concentration of beta-carotene, iron, vitamin B-12, and the rare gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). A growing number of scientific studies have documented its immune enhancement benefits.
Spirulina for this research was grown at Earthrise Farms in California, and was donated by Earthrise Company and Dainippon Ink & Chemicals of Japan. Since 1990 Earthrise had donated Spirulina to radiation clinics for the Children of Chernobyl.

Antioxidant Effects & Potential Radiation Protection
Alfalfa may also be able to protect cells from damage from such things as x-rays because of its antioxidant properties. A research study on alfalfa and two other herbal foods found that alfalfa reduced free radicals and cell damage in animal test subjects that had been given alfalfa prior to x-ray. The study was conducted in Antalya, Turkey and its results were published in the January/February 2008 issue of “Photochemistry & Photobiology.”

People in Canada should pay attention to the new food and supplement regulations going on. Do you want to have a choice between GMO, frankenfish, or real food? If we align our border with the US, will we lose our food rights? Like labling, markets, roadside stands, herbal alternatives? The US has already removed all of these rights.

Well, my family has stopped ribbing me about my cases of tuna and salmon, now in AC’d storage with other canned and storable dry foods and supplies.
Canned salmon can be found with use-by dates out to SEP 2016. Tuna ranges from 2013 to 2015, but if you go through the grocery tuna shelf, you can find dates also out to 2016 (initials are BB). And most believe the use-by dates are conservative.
I won’t be happy buying Pacific anything in a month, just like we stopped buying anything from the Gulf of Toxico, and some day government and agency cabals will see the backfiring results of their policies of suppression and denial of food issues and testing when buyers start to empty the grocery shelves.

( And I saw a report of seaweed from Maine being severely contaminated shipped at the end of March.
Unfortuately, none of our governments are testing the seaweed to check it, or telling us ways to repel/remove the radiation from our bodies.
Anti oxidants! supplements (keeping in mind most Vitamin E is GMO, possibly others) Take your A, B, C, D, E, CoQ10, Omegas, NAC can be dangerous, but if you know how to take it it’s excellent. Ther e is also Spirulina, Chlorella, Bone Powder, Baking Soda, and many others.
and anti oxidant foods like #1 pinto beans. eat a little every day. Strawberries (tricky to find non radiated ones tho, I grow mine indoors) Blueberries (frozen before) Sardines, Kippers, (realized GMOs in flavored ones, started just buying the “in water” kind). ORGANIC veggies, grown locally, not sprayed with BUDNIP, or ones you know and trust (that dont take seeds that are resistant to Round up and then DOUSE them with ROUND up. ) I’m so grossed out about what they’re allowed to do to our food! But, DON’T WORRY! It won’t impact the environment.
This asinine government is committing such atrocities on it’s people by keeping them in the dark as to the danger they are in, and we as the world watching are becoming complicit by our inaction. We see the lies unfold each day, but we do nothing. We are watching a nation of innocent citizens be poisoned by TEPCO, and we are either unable or unwilling to help them. ( I haven’t figured out which yet). I liken this to how so many felt when they knew the Jews were being led away to slaughter, and yet they did nothing to stop it. We must find ways to be a new ‘Danish Resistance’, and help these poor souls. Their country has experienced a terrible shock, with the earthquake, tremendous losses in the tsunami, and now the unimaginable consequences of living through yet another, (Hiroshima being the first), nuclear holocaust. They are unable to see clearly through their devastation, and need outside assistance.
The leaders at TEPCO, who are suffering through the same difficult emotions as the rest of the citizens, and who are perhaps terrified of triggering nationwide chaos and panic, are no longer able to make appropriate decisions here. The people must be told the truth. What that may bring, I shudder to think about. But, what is the alternative? Let them all die there? It’s all just nightmarish.

Whoever commits atrocity also commits those future atrocities thus bred.
Good government never depends upon laws, but upon the personal qualities of those who govern.
Governments, if they endure, always tend increasingly toward aristocratic forms. No government in history has been known to evade this pattern. Because Tepco’s previous estimate of the radioactivity in the water was 720,000 terabecquerels which is roughly 20% Fukushima.
So that would make 28.8 Chernobyls in the water alone.
Also Tepco today seems to be saying it was a problem with the radioactivity levels in the actual water, not sludge or contaminated oil.
Quote:
TEPCO engineers suspect that the density of radioactive substances in the contaminated water was greater than had been predicted.
They initially thought that the device had absorbed large volumes of oil and sludge containing radioactive material. But in a test conducted on Sunday, high radiation levels were registered for equipment set to the lowest of 3 absorption levels.
In another test on Monday, TEPCO adjusted the flow of the contaminated water through the equipment.
The radioactive wastewater is hampering work to bring the plant under control. The amount is increasing by 500 tons a day as fresh water is continuously being injected to cool the reactors. Storage facilities are filling up and a delay in restarting the filtering system could cause the water to overflow in about a week.

thank you for the new link radioactive! I followed that one regularly til it went down. The problem is that now that it’s warmer there you cant see the “steam” to have a visual of how much radiation is being emitted.
