“Biologists have been left mystified by millions of tiny purple creatures washed ashore on beaches in Hawaii” -MSN
Title: Oahu’s south shores invaded by mysterious creature
Source: KHON 2 Hawaii
Author: Brianne Randle

SOURCE: KHON 2
The south shore of Oahu is being invaded by something strange from sea, that even has sand crabs running for cover.
[...]
If you look closely the entire shoreline is dotted with tiny, purple creatures all curled up.
[...]
It’s something many have never seen before. And no one we found knew what they were.
[...]
Even the biologists at the Waikiki Aquarium are scratching their heads.
[...]
Waikiki Aquarium officials are saving some, hoping to keep them alive long enough to see how they grow.
[...]
At this point it’s still unknown where these crabs came from, how big they’ll get and what they eat.
Comments from Norton Chan, Waikiki Aquarium Biologist
- “The lifeguard called and asked what these things were because she had reports of surfers were actually have these things crawl up on their boards and onto them”
- “There’s a lot of things we don’t know about the ocean so any opportunity like this is a great learning experience”
Comments from beach goers
- “When something washes up like this you don’t know what to expect, maybe Tsunami stuff”
- “It’s the first time I’ve seen this, I’ve never seen it before”
- “It’s really weird, it looks like you want to eat it like a little berry”
- “There are probably millions I’d say”
- “Looks like it has about it 6 legs on each side”
- “Yeah it’s like an avatar crab”
- “I definitely want to know where they came from and what they are all about”

Run a DNA test. Is this a successful mutant new life form?
Report Comment
There is no such thing as a successful mutant life form in the face of massive radiation. Do you see successful mutant life forms on the moon?
Report Comment
All the whales are dying off of radiation poisoning. Maybe these sea creatures were part of the whales' diet and aren't getting eaten anymore.

hi anne. do you have a link on the whales and radiation deaths please? just curious, 'tis all.

Animals tend to flee to higher ground when they know a tsunami is coming. Given everything that's been pouring non-stop into water columns throughout the Pacific, I don't think it's too much of a stretch to consider something we've never seen before from the ocean suddenly swarming a beach to be a creature taking refuge in the safer place (relatively speaking).

If there b millions of them, put them in the Tepco execs' sushi. If execs live, then they're witches. If they die, who cares.

They should test them for radiation.. Who was the active Hawaiian enenewser? How about..?

So far they havn't washed up on the Big Island, we are farthest south…
I don't have a rad detector either ..

had them crawl up me whilst surfing Big Isle before, a few years ago. it wasn't a common site – certainly not millions – but on occasion there'd be a few.

Four new species of freshwater crab, bright purple in color, have been discovered in the biologically diverse but ecologically-threatened Philippines
".."This could explain why large males of various Insulamon species are more reddish compared to the generally violet females and immature males."
Scientists began extensive investigations of similar freshwater crabs in the area in the late 1980s, when one new species was found — the Insulamon unicorn, Freitag said.
More field work led Freitag to conclude there were four other unique species.

"Based on available new material, a total of five species are recognized… four of which are new to science," Freitag wrote in the latest edition of the National University of Singapore's Raffles Bulletin of Zoology…"

Perhaps another thing going on here is that for more and more humans, seeing any life form that isn't the usual few that manage to survive closer frequent contact with humans is unfamiliar because people see so little of the actual life around them anyway. When something drives these creatures into closer contact with humans, often because of a human caused event or stressor, we're mystified. The only animals we see are usually the ones we dominate or eat. The rest go largely unnoticed as their numbers dwindle into extinction.

great point vic!

My first thought was: they are malformed crabs. Malformed due to genetic defects. They had contaminated parents by radiation that had their genes modified. These parents gave birth to these malformed crabs.

Yes, and perhaps radiation accelerates the evolutionary process. From mysterious black dust-bacteria to purple crab creatures…life may turn into a sci-fi fiction reality….scarey.

Malformed creatures from a radiated ocean. Is what it is.

Ugh, could be a form of sea lice, a predator of crabs. No wonder the sand crabs are running! Sea lice come in two forms, parasitic and non-parasitic. The mouth in all species is a cone or siphon shape (vid specimen looks cone shaped to me). Basically, the sea louse is a specialized copepod that kills fish and crabs. The thorax contains six pairs of legs. I could be wrong, of course. Is it too easy a jump to speculate that rad water fingers are hitting Hawaii or just above it, so the younger marine critters are washing up now? The video states these 'pea-sized crabs' are dead or mostly dying. Any marine animal with a shell is going to be hit hard by radioactive Cesium. Their Pacific home is quickly becoming a toxic soup of many radioactive isotopes that over time is predicted to dilute at the surface, with more concentration deeper in the water column. In a recent simulation study, the eastern Pacific will be much higher in radiation than the western Pacific in ten years, especially around Baja. Woe to all the marine life, even the lowly, despised sea louse!

Looks like they may have been about for years.

Ya, heads-up to two-legged louses, beaching to follow-
If it's a sea crab, it's likely a 'megalopae' stage but that proboscis has me stumped. At http://www.marinelifephotography.com/marine/arthropods/crabs/crabs.htm are assorted pics of the 200 species of Hawaiian crabs, said to be difficult for experts to identify the different stages, let alone with radiation damage. At @ http://www.chucksaddiction.com/hitchcrabs.html, the 'pebble crab' matches the vid pic in color but the snout looks a tad like an allogalatheid klepto-parasitic crab who steals food from crinoids or a galatheid crab that is very small and eats invertebrates. What's next? A 'Tidal Wave of Terror'…it's, it's Roger Corman's 'Attack of the Crab Monsters!' We are in unknown territory.

Makes me think of a situation we have seen on land before if you kill off all the natural predators you get a spike in prey. Such as we would see if you killed off all the coyotes the rabbit population would explode to unimaginable numbers.

thanks arclight,in the meanwhile, i shot a youtube vid of a plane flight on June 28th,2012 on a Virgin Atlantic flight 24 ; LAX- LHR , i brought my Soeks defender Dosimeter with me ,and the results were above 3.0 mSv/h , most the time ,above 2.5 for the 10 hours ,the question ,i, asked on the bottom of the vid is: Is eating food and water safe at this level? the channel is Paiut023
Thankx
