Title: Tuna carrying radio active material across Pacific
Source: ABC Australia, Pacific Beat

Date: July 15, 2012
Dan Madigan, Stanford University: [...] so in 2011, the fish we measured — because we didn’t know what we’d see and we weren’t really convinced we’d see anything — we only measured 15 fish, and what was amazing was that we found it in all 15 bluefin tuna that we looked at. These were known from their size to be migrants from Japan, so they had only by the nature of when we sampled them and how long it takes them to cross the Pacific, we know they’d only been in the water around Japan for at most two months, probably less, maybe less than a month. So our big simple question was what will bluefin look like that migrate over this year that have spent their entire life from egg stage growing up in the waters off Japan? The concentrations of radioactivity had decreased, but the amount of time the animals have to spend in that water before they make their long migrations has increased. So we really don’t know what to expect. And there’s many other species that use those waters off Japan and migrate long distances, and as of now none of them have been looked at, and again people really want to know what species are carrying this radioactivity and which aren’t, and that’s what we’re trying to do.
[...]
There’s a relatively new, I think it’s somewhere in the range of one to two years old, funding site called petri dish, so that petridish.org, and we actually just launched our project on that site. And it’s a really cool idea what they’ve done. Their idea is instead of applying to grant agencies in the traditional fashion, it allows the public to go on this website, check our scientific projects, find one that interests them and contribute. And we really found after our first study we were overwhelmed by the public response, and it was clear that people want to know more about what’s going on and this is a chance for them to put a contribution of their choice, a small or a larger contribution towards figuring that out and doing a solid comprehensive study of lots of different species. So that’s what we’re doing and Petri Dish reached out to us and we just launched our project on there, so I’m encouraging anyone who’s interested in this story to go on that site. And we really want people to focus on and let us know the animals that they are interested in; whether it be ones they eat or ones they just like, so it could be sea turtles or whales, because you really like sea turtles or whales. Or it could be albacore because you eat a lot of albacore, it’s really up to you. And the nice thing is that the people who contribute are kept up to date with the work, they’re basically already directly taking part in the work and depending on how much you contribute you get something from the researchers, whether it be a thank you letter from all the researchers, other forms of swag like t-shirts, framed photographs of your study animal of choice, there’s kind of a wide variety there and you can check that all out on the site too.

sending...
Even with a strong push, it will take 20 years to shut them all down, in the mean time, get to know your radiation levels with this handy chart that I built.
If you scroll down it is translated to Japanese which I had done because I was sending my first Geiger to a Japanese family that needed real data to make real decisions.

Million Member Coalition Forms Behind Renewable Energy Agenda
"It is time for the communities who are suffering the ill effects of fracking, mountaintop mining, and other forms of wasteful and dangerous energy production to have a say in moving America to a clean energy future. The political power of the energy industry has deferred a clean energy agenda at the expense of the health and safety of too many communities in the country."
Solo said, "To those who will say that these groups do not have a place at the policy-making table, we say this: these are exactly the people who need to be heard. The harms caused by continued reliance on fossil fuels and nuclear power may not be felt in the Hart Senate Office Building on Capitol Hill, but they are experienced in the heartland of this nation."
The coalition's "American Clean Energy Agenda" calls for phasing out nuclear power, natural gas, coal and industrial biomass "and driving a grand transition to efficient use of renewable, non-polluting resources."
As signed by the supporting citizen organizations, the American Clean Energy Agenda states, "The time is now for a new, grassroots-driven politics to bring about a renewable energy future. As Congress debates major new public investments in energy, we need to ensure that our taxpayer dollars support an energy system that protects public health, promotes energy independence and ensures the economic well being of all Americans."

"Whether it be oil and shale gas drilling, coal mining or nuclear energy, this coalition of grassroots experts have witnessed firsthand the devastating impacts of mountaintop mining removal, fracking for natural gas, uranium mining and nuclear waste," said White. "We've banded together to take back our clean energy future from the seemingly all-powerful big oil, natural gas and energy companies that continue to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to keep us trapped in a dirty energy economy."

Question: if TEPCO is still pouring in literal tons of water into the reactors daily, and they're still leaking at such as rate that less than a meter of water is left standing in the reactors, and (most importantly) if Fukushima Dai'ichi is continuously giving of radiation still, how would it be possible for radiation in the Pacific to 'decrease'?
Or is he (Madigan) referring to the Bluefin Tuna they sampled?

Seitsukie I believe they, like many others, think the disaster is over. Maybe someone can go to their site & let them know. Providing links of course.

Good question. The answer is that while the TOTAL radioactive pollution continues to increase, the CONCENTRATION of radioactive crap has decreased in the waters off Japan. The largest immediate release to the Japanese coastal waters happened with the explosions, like dumping a massive bucket of paint into a bathtub. The oceans are like bathtubs with faucets on and drain open: if you dump a big bucket of paint (or cesium) in the tub, and then slowly pour more paint in it will still gradually dilute as the paint is drained and replaced by new water. In the actual oceans, the "drain" is the rest of the planet. This is why researchers now say California will be the most contaminated coast in ten years: the crap is spreading out on thecurrents.

In theory it's logical and hopeful for the world that the ocean water off Fukushima is much less toxic than after the initial explosions and releases from the meltdowns.
But relying on the Tepco data for current ocean values does not inspire confidence. They have understated radiation levels from the first day. Independent offshore research is needed to assess just how bad is the dituation from the leaking megaplex at this point in time. Japan banned close shore foreign researchers last year. I doubt they are any more accommodating now.
Very little hard data on water injections had been issued by Tepco in over a year. We have little idea of how much feed water has been used to cool various hotspots in the plant. It could be trillions of gallons poured over three 100-ton coriums in the ground and seven spent fuel ponds. How much water? How contaminated? Hiw much flows into the ocean every day?
The Japanese people and the entire world are entitled to truthful answers. But don't expect any open disclosures from the Diet and Tepco. That's why 100,000 Tokyo citizens are protesting in thr streets every weekend. The government leaders are headed for another reshuffle soon.

In a few very short years from now..there won't be ANY Bluefin Tuna. Their eggs & sperm will be permanently damaged. Can't those Idiots who claim to be "Experts" SEE THIS?

TEPCO data should ALWAYS be considered false until proven correct by independent testing…
Until some group like Greenpeace is allowed into the waters off Fukushima, everything we are told is highly suspect!

I have a question I would like some of you to answer. I have noticed this year a drastic reduction in the number of earth worms around my home in Blaine MN. USA. We have had plenty of rain and usualy after it rains the driveway and street have many many dozens of worms crawling around. This year I have made an effort to go out after it rains and have seen a grand total of 2, yes, TWO earth worms this year. I have also noticed far fewer bugs in general around my house. Anyone else noticing anything similar? Thanks.

I've posted on the anomalies thread about the 95% reduction of cockroaches in my yard.
I live in the desert and the cockroaches live in our relatively lush garden. They've been mostly wiped out in my yard–started aug of 2011 but persists still.
At first I was happy until I realized what this means.
I did some research and found multiple sources documenting decimation of cockroaches after Chernobyl in Russia and the Ukraine.
These sources also mentioned earthworms as vulnerable.
The cockroaches in my yard lived in the soil with the earthworms.
Both ingest soil (cockroaches through breathing cilia like structures on their legs).
Thus, both are vulnerable.
My inlaws live in MN so I've watched the jet stream over that state.
Jet stream is over it during parts of year (including recently).
The Dakotas had amazingly high rad net levels at various points in the fall of 2011.
MN has no readings in the northern part of the state.
I bet your earthworks suffered the same fate as my cockroaches.
Earthworms seem to me much more of a loss…
