Title: Copters to measure radiation in Bay Area
Source: San Francisco Chronicle
Date: Updated 10:26 p.m., August 25, 2012
Federal safety agencies announced Friday that they will conduct low-flying helicopter surveys over the Bay Area next week to measure naturally occurring background radiation. The daily flights starting Monday and ending Saturday are part of a joint research project between the Department of Homeland Security’s Domestic Nuclear Detection Office and the National Nuclear Security Administration, the Energy Department agency that oversees the nation’s nuclear weapons stockpile.
[...]
The information it gathers will be used by the agencies to “improve aerial radiation measurement capabilities” by local, state and federal entities, the announcement said.

Thanks, Admin.
After a long break from the jet stream this summer, the Bay is getting hit again this week, just in time for back to school.

EPA has radiation sampling stations all over …so, who knows what the helicopters are for. Probably something else, it anything.

You are optimistic.
The EPA RadNet has less measurement stations than the German and Japanese radiation measurement networks.
See the puny EPA radnet station map here: http://www.epa.gov/radnet/radnet-data/index.html#mapframe

EPA monitoring stations~~~!? Remember that the EPA turned most of them off during the first couple of weeks after 3/11/11. This was reported many times on eneNEWS. Ditto for the Canadian health agencies; they turned off their monitors.
Background radiation? We have never had any background radiation!!! Just ask UCB's Dept of Nuclear Engineering, BRAWM team. Nothing. Nada. No effect. Move along now!
Report Comment
I'll guess they're wanting to establish a current reading in order to compare with later levels during and after winter rains, the results of which will never be revealed – and second – to justify a (meaningless) announcement that "levels are the same and perfectly safe". Everything state and federal agencies do now, and what they announce, convinces me that our high-priced, wasteful government has become nothing more than an exercise in 'perception management', and I've stopped listening, because I think that their public emissions are toxic.
Or maybe they're warming up Bernanke's choppers, to be ready for the post-election, poverty war QE III money drop, which will arrive DOA as did the 1st two.
Report Comment
How long will they continue throwing the phrase "naturally-occurring" into post-3/11 descriptions of aerial radiation surveys, measurements at toxic waste dumps in jeopardy, and when food chain items detections inspire their alleged "concern"?! Another "coincidence"(?)that this announcement comes so soon after the "Treasure Island" fiasco?~NOT!!~ They've got a helluva lot of inactivity and lies to make up for before I even consider applauding any (minimal)efforts undertaken in the name of public safety and health concerns!! it's all so friggin' ridiculous anymore!!we been on our own all along and nothing will change while fascism rules in the land where the BS technology originated and their sickening relationship between the filthy industry and our govt.'s continues…..anyone displaying negativity about anything TPTB does is automatically considered a terrorist, traitor or a nutcase and probably SHOULD fear what they may do to anyone on their "shitlist". Anyone who speaks out even though they mean well is probably on that list these days no matter what the issue of conflict may be!

It's no longer possible to measure "natural" background radiation levels on the US west coast. So much extra radioactivity has been added over the past year and a half that any levels they measure are going to include "unnatural" isotopes from Fuku (and perhaps other sources) as well.
In fact, it hasn't been possible to measure exclusively "natural" background radiation since they started exploding atomic bombs across the hemisphere in the late 1940s. The phrase "natural background radiation" has been a misnomer since then (probably a deliberately misleading one, since they cite the fact that there is radioactivity in nature to reassure people that their additional releases are nothing to worry about). The bomb tests permanently increased the background rads to which we are all exposed. There is nothing "natural" about that.
But I also wonder WHY wasn't this background radiation surveying done long ago? I would have thought such background testing would have been carried out back in the Cold War. Why are they only getting around to it now (a year and a half after we–and especially our west coast–have been nuked by Fukushima). If they hadn't done it before, why didn't they do it in the week before the plume arrived, to get a baseline from which they could just Fuku's true effects (not that they want any of us to know its true effects, but surely someone somewhere in Washington, D.C., would have wanted to know that information).
Report Comment
Should say:

Of course they must have pre-311 background radiation data. America's obsessed with data lol They have all the record of Hiroshima and I can't imagine they haven't collected their own.

For the most part, now that Fukushima nuclear poisonings are being localized, time to check background radiation levels in the US after being dusted with Fukushima's main event and ensuing fallout. After readings are taken, they will raise radiation background levels to a new and higher standard. They are already claiming they are about to take 'natural' background readings.
Some comparable readings taken in, say, South America would be telling but they will test Los Angeles among other places and use those readings as comparables then claim the variations are minimal between the two cities then arbitrary set safe citizen exposure rates using those new parameters along with raising background readings used prior to Fukushima meltdowns.
In the meantime, low tides at Fukushima drain radioactive wastes into the sea and high tides force the poisons into the freshwater aquifers.
Short of leveling forests, fields, cities, etc., then covering half the contaminated island of Japan with a layer of concrete to prevent further dispersion, not much you can do, except wait a few decades for radiation to decay.
Report Comment
@razzz: "…wait a few decades for radiation to decay."? Think you meant centuries…
Report Comment
Maybe so about the decades to centuries or possibly eons, was hoping to just stop the localized spreading of contamination in light of recent Chernobyl findings where cesium readings are not fading away but in some areas actually increasing since the disaster in 1986.
The reason to replace the original Chernobyl sarcophagus with a new improved one is to keep contamination from escaping further into the surrounding areas as they begin demolishing the plant. That reactor had no primary containment just pretty much a kettle in an open room so anything irradiated by the explosion, like concrete, will continually breakdown to dust and become airborne including any radioactive lava mixes.
Before nuclear testing and during WW2, Germany was producing high quality steel for its naval fleet. To this day, the wrecked or sunken ships are highly prized for salvage due to their metal content and (non)radioactive readings.
Report Comment
Exactly right, not many people know that the submarine fleets of the UK and US are made of a lot of this type of steel.
Report Comment
They already acknowledged that the 'dilution solution" isn't a viable approach with regard to the state of the Pacific Ocean, and radiation doesn't "behave" the way they'd hoped or wish would be the case. Then there's Chernobyl and recent confirmation that Cesium has NOT decreased after reaching it's half-life and then some.In fact it has shown to have increased instead?!! Unless some major breakthrough in neutralizing radioactivity and/or remediation techniques at the very least-then we're pretty much screwed! I personally believe that the faulty, crap nuclear technology that began here in the USA-will have to "end" in the USA before any meaningful attempts to solve the nuclear issue(s) and their associated problems can be dealt with on the global scale. If Obama gets re-elected then maybe he will turn on the offending industries the way he's turned on those who assume pushing a little button in the voting booth actually results in their vote being counted & as intended?!! If the "pipe-dream" I cited were to actually happen-with a politician turning on one of the most corrupt, toxic and foul special-interest group of all,in favor of the well-being of humanity,common-sense and the survival of Earth and it's inhabitants~"then" we "might" have a chance. Anything less-then we're probably ALL truly "FUKuD"!!!~Anyone worth "the person they're printed on" already knows this in their "gut"!!~(I sure dream big,huh?,lol)….:-

I personally do not believe in the term "natural background radiation".
Since the big bang, any radiation traces would be long gone by now.
I think that something else happened long ago to create the background radiation we have today.

interesting thought rambojim. From the scientific perspective, there is a thing as 'natural' or baseline reference levels within energy states. If not, we'd all be in the form of one-big resonating plasma-cloud. All things – living and 'dead' – give off (emit) various forms of 'radiation' as time progresses. This has much to do with your initial point about the big-bang; a theory yet to be proven. It is these very 'baseline' levels of energy potential that define the 'existence' of given mass (particle). 'AJ' paranoia aside, I'm just curious if they're using the cover of this operation (helo-ops) to mask something else…

@Maggie: key statement "…'baseline' levels of energy potential that define the 'existence' of [a] given mass…" determines a quantum state.
"Different quantum states for a physical system show discrete differences in the value of the variables used to define the state." [http://www.thefreedictionary.com/quantum+state] interpolates that points of reference (baseline conditions) determine transition states.
In simple terms: without a reference, there are no distinct points or margins of safety…

Thanks, AFTERSHOCK – will do some followup.

rambo,
if you believe that radioactive elements have been produced at the "big bang" only, you are wrong.
Every supernova produces a full range of heavy elements at its neutron flux of about 1E25/cm2.
This is at least 10 billion times the neutron flux in nuclear reactors.
Even the sun produces them by neutron capture, but in minuscule quantities.
So radioactive (instable) isotopes are constantly produced and spread in space.
There will always be a natural background of radioactive decay.

Radiation measurements from helicopters.
They know why they don't come closer to the surface…
h.

They want you to think it is measuring "natural" background radiation. Actually in the fed's own words:
"The fixed-wing system is designed to produce data for areas of high radioactivity (areas where the natural background radiation can be ignored). The helicopter systems are used for radiation measurements closer to the natural background levels."
http://www.colorado.edu/hazards/library/japan_nukebib.html
SP: Can't access the article without paying $30. But they were also doing the same helicopter surveys in Baltimore in May 2012:
http://www.mde.state.md.us/programs/PressRoom/Pages/NNSABaltassessment.aspx
SP: If I understand this 2008 article on drones it appears at 300 feet (100 meters) a radiation detector is not very likely to compile "normal" bacjground radiation. It needs to be lower (100 feet) to do that:
"High energy gamma radiation, above a few hundred keV, can be observed up to a distance of approximately 100m above ground. Lower energy radiation limits the potential for airborne observations to altitudes of 30m."
http://www.barnardmicrosystems.com/L4E_radiation_watch.htm
SP: So the SF and Baltimore public explanation seems false unless radiation detectors have advanced considerably in 4 years (I doubt it).
I think they are looking to see if something needs to be addressed prior to the presidential debates. Obama is not going to be blindsided at least on this specific topic. Not that Romney is likely to use it.

I believe they just do "natural" background measuring.

Nice find Sickputer!~ I also seem to remember something similar going down in Seattle and possibly Portland a while back too. The one thing ALL of the pro-nuke pukes have in common is the ability to "speak with a forked tongue" and contradict each small admission of a "problem" with an "about-face" and change the story and add more confusion for the victim/public to sort through without ever getting a straight answer except for those who "defect" from the foul ranks of perpetrators to rejoin the human race despite the money to be made by silently allowing TPTB to annihilate humanity just by getting paid to not be critical of their SOP,if not be a "slithering, industry spokesperson". I admire those cited-Chris,Kei,Pat,Arnie,etc. for being incorruptible role models for all of us,but especially pro-nuke insiders who suddenly find themselves confronted by a conscience and soul and start moving towards the "light" again. I wish more would "cowboy up" and rejoin the human race! I can't speak for all of us,but I'd personally forgive and even suggest "rewarding" anyone who split ranks and confessed industry "secrets",cover-ups,etc.~even if they had to admit their prior complicity in crimes against humanity in the process!(just "my" opinion)Take Care ALL

I am heartened by the only positive outcome that Fuku has possibly brought about, that of the sentiments of jonnyblade. It will take that since of outrage, magnified by millions of times, to get us out of this unbelievable situation. Yesterday our drones killed over 50 humans between Somalia(37) and Pakistan(18) and not a word was said. This happens every day, in our name. I have not seen a single news story on Fuku in so long I no longer denigrate my fellow humans for being so uninformed. I know they don't have the time to do the research I do. We have no idea of the conditions of our fellow humans in Japan, no reporting, no official numbers of sickness or deaths, no reports of illness no nothing. We are, however, making the world safe for commerce. We are ready to invade Syria, Iran, god knows who else in order to secure all available strategic resources, that is what we do, because we can. Those of us who would like to evolve as a species are the enemy and will be removed, period. That is what we are up against. I don't think turning the other cheek is the answer. But I respect those who put their lives on the line in peaceful persuit of an end to this insanity. However, that is not something that the powers that be understand.
Welcome to the dark times. Now the real struggle begins. Will we prevail or surrender………………..

Blackbeer – Thank you for your entire post with call out of this: "I no longer denigrate my fellow humans for being so uninformed. I know they don't have the time to do the research I do." By design or more likely to my observation by normal human psychology at work across decades and centuries – we have gone from mass illiteracy with rule by the literate elite (pre-Gutenberg) to potential of wide-spread knowledge – and back to the equivalent of mass illiteracy again. Many more are literate, but are unschooled in the necessity and importance of the power that was within their grasp. I can't say there's no 'design' to this state of affairs. I think those of power have retained their pre-Gutenberg elitist persuasion; they have taken advantage of normal human psychology to shape cultural "memes" and values. They have encouraged childish enthusiasm for baubles and circuses.

Having said what I said – I can think of multiple additional facets that should be identified. I guess the 'bottom line' is: So – what do we do? Other than speaking, challenging, acknowledging, I have no idea. We'd like to see "critical mass awareness" – and maybe that will develop. There are indications it could.

Thanks Maggie, I am quite sure it is by design. I have been watching it happen since my return from Viet Nam in 69. I was lucky enough to stumble across BF Skinner about that time and between him and Sigmounds favorite nephew I was pretty sure of the way things would be going. I had no idea, however, how successful and how fast this change would happen. I'm a child of the 60's and for sure I felt the power that we had for a moment in time. That may have been our swan song, I don't know. Yemen, Egypt, these peoples uprisings gave me new hope, as did the Wall Street movement, but, in fact, it only let us realize what we were up against and that we are ill equipped to face this foe. I only hope I live long enough to be here when the sh%$ hits the fan. Already I feel the earth move under my feet, and I know she will have the final say……………

Egypt is sunni Arab, they dislike(and could be considered an "enemy") of Iran(Persian) but would prefer to support Iran than the US.
Our government is ousting christianity in favor of "universal" religion, including sharia muslim acceptance. A problem arises when the government allows sharia to dominate the US "freedoms" and Constitutional laws because sharia is a blend of religion and GOVERNMENT. If you accept sharia, you allow a foreign government to have control of your life. You are controlled. Other religions don't do that but the muslim religion does. This is happening right now and will continue to happen. ALL people that support abortions will be on the kill list if sharia is the rule of america. No sex outside marriage is allowed. All gays will be on the kill list. Want to drink beer?… they will kill you for that. Want to wear a 2 piece swimsuit? Not allowed. All meat will be blessed by a muslim that makes it dedicated to ALLAH. So when you eat it you are subjecting youself to the dominion of their god. @blackbear: "Those of us who would like to evolve . . . will be removed, period." assumes evolution can be influenced by that which is evolving. It is an interactive process. Quick background: more non-combatants are killed during war, than those who are actively participating in it. This leads one to conclude, there is no safe harbor. You can hunker down in the trench but just as easily be finished-off as those who charge forth.
The nature of evolutionary struggle is that of chaos with controlled feedback. And those who think they're in control are as easily effected by the outcome of their efforts as those who are controlled.

The great upcoming war and the last chapter of the good book are hand in hand. So much of it is hard to understand but concentrating on it has revealed a lot.
I believe the Fukushima core meltdown is the " as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea"
Also "the heaven departed as a scroll"… I could not comprehend that until I saw a photo of 2 Israeli warplanes with their "trails" which were exactly that… it made the sky look like it was rolled up like a scroll and next sentence … "the mountains were moved out of their place" is because of the bombs! Google photos and you can see what I am talking about the scrolls. " the sea of burning glass" was another passage I could not understand until I realized that if a large expanse of sand is nuked then it will liquify & become a sea of burning glass! WSP sez…"I believe from day one, the ones who rule the world knew exactly what was and is happening with Fukushima."
SP: Of course they did…the US has 91 military bases in Japan. The nuclear detection Boeing WC-135W Constant Phoenix aircraft flew over to Japan the first week of the crisis and remains close by in Fairbanks, Alaska.
They knew exactly what was happening. As the first huge fallout plume was heading across California on Friday March 18, 2011 the Obama girls and momma left on a plane for Brasilia and Barack showed up 18 hours later in his plane. 51-car loads of his friends and colleagues tagged along on the South American trip. Even Steven Chu was enjoying the fresh South American air.
They spent five days in South America conveniently avoiding the worst fallout cloud since the Chinese super hydrogen bomb test in 1966 blew across America.
"It produced fallout that by January 1, 1967 resulted in the fallout cloud covering most of the United States. This one Chinese explosion produced about 15 million curies of iodine- 131 – roughly the same amount as the total release of iodine- 131 into the atmosphere from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster."

SP: I don't need the Internet to tell me about that bomb…I lived through it and the main stream media in America publicized it on TV and in newspapers and gave advice about avoiding eating snow ice cream.

Exactly Sickputer..It just showed who really is invited and who will get warned when things get dangerous (it won't be us).
There is only so many who can go deep down into their deluxe accommodations.
There are many who think they will be protected, but they really won't be.
Thank you Sickputer

* Before pontificating at Energy News about our radiation and radiation surveys state of affairs, at least spend a few minutes Googling and/or Duckduckgo-ing. This:
–came up in the top 10 from a single search. It's a perspective piece about radon hazards that focuses upon Tahoe, but includes a wealth of survey maps and links –some of them precisely to the past USGS radiation surveys being speculated about here.
* This isn't to put you down or shut down participation here, but to emphasize how very important our own due diligence is –when it must go in lieu of what our mainstream news and co-opted government agencies should be providing.
** Not to detract at all from the time-bomb Fukushima Daiichi amounts to, but up to this point, the #1 cause of lung cancer among non-smokers has been radon. It could be (and I sure don't know for sure) that disinformation agents want us to focus on radionuclides drifting in from Japan –instead of domestic radon. Why? Perhaps (perhaps) it's because (and I'd like to find out for sure) –that a very significant source of the radon across our nation is the 350 million tons of uranium mine tailings left laying about the North American continent (per:

* Human-social-group psychology being what it is, I can lodge my comments here, and in a day or two everyone will most likely go back to babbling away as if I said/stated nothing.

**We do our best with this babble, but what we really and desperately need is a government and leadership (in and out of government) who we can trust –who can tell us what's what, then we put our shoulders to the wheel to make whatever's wrong –right.
I suggest that we all vote Green this time –and no matter what, since we're surely on the road to hell by going the "lesser of two evils" route. I get the impression that the Greens are serious this time: no more "safe state" BS. (Hey: send them a donation!) –Craig
