Transcript for Exclusive Arnie Gundersen Interview: The Dangers of Fukushima Are Worse and Longer-lived Than We Think, Chris Martenson, June 3, 2011:

Arnie Gundersen, nuclear consultant

[...] It’s also possible in any of the fuel pools, one, two, three, and four pools, that you could get a criticality, as well. So there’s been frequent enough high iodine indications to lead me to believe that either one of the four fuel pools or the Unit 3 reactor is in fact, every once in a while starting itself up and then it gets to a point where it gets so hot that it shuts itself down and it kind of cycles. It kind of breathes, if you will. [...]

I think it’s a relatively significant amount – maybe a tenth of the nuclear reactor core starts back up and shuts back down and starts back up and shuts back down. And that’s an extra heat load; you are not prepared to get rid of one tenth of a nuclear reactor’s heat by pumping water in the top [...]

  • Apocalypse!
    Open air nuclear reactors! Consequences of uranium mines are similar and together with fossil fired plants makes for synergistic brew propbably going back to the soup at the begin. What research opportunities(sic)

      Why is there no big media coverage of this extraordinary situation, like there was for Chernobyl?

      What on earth do CNN, Sky, Fox, BBC, SBS TV, News Nine, etc, think they are meant to be doing??

            It’s what led me to this site. I’ve tried talking to friends, colleagues who all seem to think I’m barmy. I’ve given up trying to talk about it…..most people have forgotten that it ever happened, they say that it’s a long way away or they believe the people involved know what they’re doing and, finally, that most people have got their own lives to think about. They also all believe that if it WAS something to worry about that it would be all over the news. When I asked for the opinion of the lawyer I work for she said that she is more concerned about the deaths involved with diamond mining. Every reply just cuts me dead and ends the conversation before it even starts. She also said that people aren’t interested in “old” news and that they have to keep selling newspapers. When I couldn’t find any news about Japan I thought it might be because it was bad but how the global media can be totally shut down is beyond me and I can’t get my head round it at all. Maybe the sort of people that are interested in this site are a bit more curious and imaginative or something. It’s definitely something that’s always on my mind but I’m obviously in the minority. It bears repeating……the only people I can discuss it with are all on this site! It’s all so crazy that I’ve, at least once, wondered if it ever happened at all and I’m in some parallel universe it’s all so crazy. I’m totally fed up with the BBC and I’ve more or less given up on the crazy 24hr news…I pay my licence fee and for what? Certainly no investigative journalism. I understand that news has to be “new” but surely something on the scale of Japan should be reported on from time to time? Instead I have to watch what they want me to watch on a continual loop about stuff that compared to Japan doesn’t really matter and what’s the point when sites like this exist?

        This ain’t the cold war where people have a political ax to grind.

        Plus the nuclear industry OWNS the media and heavily lobbies governments to keep everything hush hush

        CBS = Westinghouse
        NBC = GE

          The “media” in 1986 had a bit more integrity guaranteed by a greater diversity of ownership. There were more than, in the English language in the West (UK/US) more than 50 different corporations that owned all English language media in 1986. Today there are only 4 or 5 multinational corporations operating with far less regulatory structure. Over the past 25 years, not coincidentally, the tendency of editors and programming directors for any English language media has been to say less and to avoid offending the corporate owners of all media, which results in being told a smaller and smaller, less significant proportion of the overall, big-picture truths about any disaster or story that might cast any of the subsidiary corporations of the media ownership corporations in a questionable light. All the corporations that own the entire world English language media are deeply enmeshed (such as GE) with the nuclear power industry, with nuclear weapons and military contracts of the western nations. There will be, logically, less and less accurate reportage and information, for other reasons besides media consolidation, online will also reveal less and less about reality without extraordinary effort of individuals with high integrity as seen in this blog site and perhaps a few others.

        I have wondered about this also. Either it is as bad as everyone here thinks and to tell people in a forcefull enough way to make the general public aware of the gravity of this situation would lead to a huge world wide panic, or it is being overplayed in forums like this. I think the powers that be have grown too accustomed to having their heads attached to their bodies to make people hear the worst.

        You have that exactly right. Another example of the disinformation meme of “bungling fools working independent of each other” that can be easily analyzed as untrue is in the reportage following the 911 false flag operation by the United States to justify regressions in policy of the past 10 years, such as the jingoistically entitled “Patriot Act”, the “Anti Violent Domestic Terrorism Act” and quite a number of other policy actions and regressive legislative acts passed that have greatly reduced basic human rights, on paper, in the U.S., and especially in our, the U.S., international foreign policies. These policy trends since the false flag of 911 have made information gathering and transparency about government, quite a bit more difficult to analyze but not impossible, as it is quite valid to induce or deduce the policies of states by historic axioms of power, such as divide and conquer, and covert methods are meant to confuse and distract, disinformation, misinform, or to reinforce straw-man concepts about big-picture geopolitical realities which have nothing to do with axioms of despotic power games.

      It’ frrustrating trying to reach and engage individuals here in dialogue without a forum, so at the risk of repeating myself:
      I think that I can shed some light on the on-again, off-again nature of thecriticality.
      A similar phenomenon plagued early test reactors in the 1940s, called “poisoning” of the reactor…
      The splitting of uranium or plutonium in a chain reaction leads to the production of iodine 135, with a half-life of about 9 hours.
      The iodine then breaks down into Xenon 135.
      Xenon 135 is a potent neutron absorber, even better than cadmium.
      The Xenon 135 absorbs neutrons and (temporarily) halts the chain reaction, until it’s exhausted and then the cycle begins again.

      My humble opinion:

      1. Money. Billions, trillions invested in nuclear energy.

      2. Money. We owe Japan a trillion dollars. If they ask for it now, we don’t have it to pay. The U.S. is already 14 trillion in debt.

      3. Money. MSM is owned by companies who’ve promoted and made big money off nuclear power.

      4. Greed. Nuclear power is a cash cow.

      5. Old thinking. Nuclear power is an old outdated energy promoted by an old stubborn mindset.

    hi Rosie. :)

    if you’re meaning why the MSM blackout? or do you mean the rest of what’s going on?

    if it’s the former, seems it ties directly to just who owns the MSM. who ‘pays the bills’ so to speak. GE is the designer of many nuc plants and a great deal more than kitchen appliances. dad worked for them in the 50′s & 60′s, GE has always courted and won guvt contracts. and that’s not for blenders i can assure you. so when you watch the commercials, ask yourself who would loose most if the ‘truth of things’ actually were openly admitted on MSM, they would not kill the milk cow. and their admissions are not much.

    and the above is only ONE angle. there’s a number more than only that.

    For sure 3 is a LOT more active.

    Why can’t Japan utilize some kind of modified, automated >SONIC DEVICE< to measure and map the exact location of the corium in or under the reactor??

    They did this very successfully back in 1983 for the Three Mile Island meltdown. Isn't that the big question at stake for each reactor at the Daiichi plant?…

    Where is the corium now?!….

    Fukushima spent fuel crisis: What exactly are the risks — and will Russia heed the lesson?
    Part of: Nuclear meltdown in Japan

    For over a week now, the world’s attention has been riveted to the distressed reactors at Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, whose cooling systems were destroyed in the devastation brought by the March 11 dual natural disasters — but the on-site cooling ponds, where vast amounts of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) are in storage and which, just like the reactor cores, have been dangerously heating up, pose no less of a threat. What are the dangers? And why does the Russian nuclear industry pretend Russian on-site storage facilities are exempt from such terrible risks?
