Human embryos in US likely bioaccumulating radioactive iodine, cesium, and strontium says physician who taught at Harvard Med School

There is no ‘safe’ exposure to radiation, Salt Lake City Tribune, April 9, 2011:

Radiation from Japan is now detectable in the atmosphere, rain water and food chain in North America. Fukushima reactors are still out of control and hold 10 times more nuclear fuel than there was at Chernobyl, thousands of times more than the bomb dropped on Hiroshima. …

Bioaccumulation increases the concentration of many contaminants as one moves up the food chain. Beef is much higher in dioxins than cattle feed and tuna fish have much higher mercury than their marine environment. Radioactive iodine, cesium, and strontium, all beta emitters, become concentrated in the food chain because of bioaccumulation. At the top of the food chain, of course, are humans, including fetuses, and human breast milk.

In 1963, one week after an atmospheric nuclear bomb test in Russia, our scientists observed the magnifying power of bioaccumulation when they detected radioactive iodine in the thyroids of mammals in North America even though they could not detect smaller amounts in the air or on vegetation.

Bioaccumulation is one reason why it is dishonest to equate the danger to humans living 5,000 miles away from Japan with the minute concentrations measured in our air. If we tried, we would now likely be able to measure radioactive iodine, cesium, and strontium bioaccumulating in human embryos in this country. Pregnant women, are you OK with that?

Hermann Mueller, another Nobel Prize winner, is one of many scientists who would not have been OK with that. In a 1964 study, “Radiation and Heredity”, Mueller spelled out the genetic damage of ionizing radiation on humans. He predicted the gradual reduction of the survival of the human species as exposure to radioactivity steadily increased. Indeed, sperm counts, sperm viability and fertility rates worldwide have been dropping for decades. …

    I know this Grandma to be, is NOT ok with this.

    I believe Monday will be a Month of this.

    What are the plans to stop these plants?

    Knowing that earth quakes and tsunami’s happen. Did they build these things without a plan when things fail?

    If they can’t fix this, what are their plans for the people in Japan, Canada, Usa and so on?

    Risk is to Great

    My youngest daughter is about six minths along !
    My oldest Son in Iraq breathing D.U. dust, now this too !
    Now all of us will get our share !

      Dad’s and Grandpa’s aren’t ok with this either..I don’t think to many people are.

    I hope your Son comes home soon.

    • xdrfox

      Yeah, they will just send him back again, Multi tours already, but better then Afghanistan with the many losses we are having there !

    These reports (not new to me) show that authorities are mincing words and ill advising by inappropriate cross referencing with non related unscientific facts if not out and out lying to the public !

    Instead of this henny penny madness over irradiation we should consider the enormous upside to the biosphere and other creatures more deserving of this beautiful planet by a drastically lowered human population. Human beings are being karmically aced out of the only biosphere we have because of the presumed benefits of hyper-consumptive lifestyles shoved down our throats by the corporate governance we now have. Judging by comments above we should be asking ourselves; what becomes of a nation that must cultivate and maintain a warrior class preoccupied with stealing other nations resources whilst living the most piggish human lifestyles imaginable? Shame on humanity generally and Americans especially for not caring a whit about preserving our true MOTHER, and all the while consuming like there is no tomorrow. It is NOT sustainable and we are clearly losing the game.

      No Sh*t, I didn’t start that war or any other, even the One that I was in and bold faced was lied to about. When do off spring listen to there parents when they have a fake Hollywood and TV and lying Presidents to believe in that never seems to get the real truth ! Just always drove a 4 cylinder, I get 90 miles to the gallon, for the past 7 years, how many MPG do you get ? I be willing to bet you produce 10 times the garbage that I do consuming ! Less then 5lbs a week !

        You make strong contributions that I respect here (and apparently elsewhere). I am low impact, and non consumptive to the degree possible living in the US. Unless humanity immediately addresses the etiology of our planet’s destruction we will not be around to indulge worry over the inability of humans to breed, much less consume.

      You want to know who isn’t SUSTAINABLE? It’s the rich f***s who brought us these wars, the FED, the IMF, the Bilderbergs, nuclear power and AIPAC, just to name a few. Have them marched off a cliff and maybe the world will straighten out.

    I like how you back it up with a source

  • All life will be accumulating radioactive iodine 131, cesium 137 and strontium. The people that made the mess should also be the people who pay for the cleanup and help pay the affected peoples medical bills later.

    In a nuclear radiation disaster, radioactive isotopes (radiation poisoning and exposure) will spread through sea water, rain and end up in the food supply and drinking water of people thousands of miles away. Zeolite can help protect you. Potassium iodine (or potassium iodide) is not a safe supplement, and really does not work.

    Instead of making them just pay, their whole families should be rounded up and made to cleanup the mess!!!

    I think everyone who believes that its okay to have such miniscule particles of radioactive stuff flying around constantly, and those that still believe in and insist upon continuing to use such a dangerous substance for energy consumption, all managers at every nuclear plant in the world, every human that has okayed the changes to safe limits, everyone that refused to measure anything other than iodine, every shill and nuclear industry apologist should put their money where their mouth is and go help tepco clean up this mess in japan. Go on! Show the rest of us how safe it is. Go on theres loads of space since the tsunami, great investment opportunities after all this id ‘nothing like chernobyl’ is it? Go on i dare ya!

  • crazygreen

    Good morning! Interesting that it takes a crisis to make people wake up to realize the corporations that run this world are Dangerous! They only value profit, not people! And that is why this has happened.

    GE followed an unsafe “save money” policy and so did TEPCO. They were betting on actuarials and not doing what needed to be done to protect against giant tsunami and earth quakes.

    Monetary values were placed on human life, and obviously they don’t value life too highly. Now they can claim “force majeure” and say it wasn’t their fault.

    How about this question: Who said it was safe to build a dangerous technology, requiring heavy human control and intervention, within a giant tsunami and earthquake zone?

    There is criminal negligence and the people responsible should be tried for it. These are the people who have allowed the poisoning of the Western Hemisphere in exchange for profit. Industrial values do not include a value on human life.

    Dr. Helen Caldicott,

  • It’s far beyond Likely, if we can judge from the past and Chernobyl

    Dr Ernest Sternglass of University of Pittsburg presented the following infant mortality rate for the Pacific states, following chernobyl fallout in May 1986, just one month after Chernobyl:

    * May 1986 54% increase infant mortality in Washington state
    * May 1986 48% increase infant mortality in California compared to previous June
    * June 1986 245% increase deaths per thousand live births in Washington state
    * June 1986 900% increse infant mortality rate per live births in Massachusetts

    These problems will face those who inhale or ingest even the smallest particle of radioactive material:

    * premature births
    * increased deaths after live births
    * increased infant pneumonia & influenza
    * increased leukemia
    * increased learning defects
    * increased thyroid cancer
    * increased breast cancer
    * immune deficiency disorders
    * increased chronic degenerative disorders

    This is another Extinction Level Event organized by evil and negative powers you can’t imagine….we haven’t been given half the turth of who we are as Human Beings and the beauty potential/power we have. Its up to us to stop this as one collective postive unit. Don’t fight among ourselves…don’t give into fear. We have the upper hand. The challenge is to remember. The future is NOT written. We can STOP all of this!

    one could grow hemp and turn it into energy for around $1.00 a gallon,it equals 400 gallons of gasoline, plus almost everything can be made from it.from cloth to plastic ,paper ,fuel even homes, it doesn’t get you high and it’s illegal, maybe one day the people will stop this nonsense and take their world back from the top 1% and then we can take care of our mother earth like she takes care of us.this plant could save the planet and we listen to fat greedy pigs and do what they say.think about it, get real

    • rob

      not only that we wouldn’t have to cut one more tree down,
      i only wonder why there is no outrage?

      • Linda

        Because the sheeple don’t want to think, realize or do anything about the situation on this planet as it currently is. Better to just sit back and think that everything is just hunky-dory. Compliancy is easy.
