AEC chief puts odds of N-plant accidents at ‘1-in-infinity’, The Hindu, November 10, 2011:
Excerpts from a speech by Chairman of Atomic Energy Commission Srikumar Banerjee on Nov. 10
- “The probability of an accident due to a nuclear plant is one is to infinity”
- “There are nearly 14,000 nuclear plants in the world and the casualty rate till date is just 52″
- Fukushima “was not a nuclear accident… immediately after the earthquake, the nuclear reactor shut down and nuclear chain reaction stopped”
- “The spread of radiation was not as high as it was projected” from Fukushima
- “He termed it as ‘baseless,’ the allegation that nuclear radiation comes out from the nuclear plant”
- “Besides, the plants along the coastal areas do not have any effect on the lives of fish, he added”

We have long believed that the solution is dilution. Worked with carbon monoxide, just vent it outside, back yard burn barrels burned everything, just don’t keep standing in the smoke, and our power plants, our cars, our home furnaces, and industrial wastes just keep getting cleaned up in the worlds weather systems. Sadly, this has been the approach to this crisis also. It doesn’t work so well when the radiation keeps being released, and when the half lives are in the hundreds/thousands/and millions of years. It moves around, it accumulates and is the gift that keeps on giving. Let’s hope there is being progress made in containment. Clean up isn’t realistic yet. We are not in the final stages, the limits of this disaster is still unfolding and the magnitude still unknown. Isolation, evacuation, sealing and limiting of damages are priorities. If only the radiation was as easy to cover up as the news coverage is to black out.

Manmohan to focus on energy ties with Kazakhstan
“Early this year, India began renewing efforts to sell nuclear reactors to Kazakhstan; Department of Atomic Energy Chairman Srikumar Banerjee is already here to hold talks on a feasibility study for 220 MWe reactors considered ideal for an electricity grid in a vast country with a scattered population. This would be India’s first export of nuclear reactors, provided it manages to convince the Kazakhs to end their total dependency on Russian technology.
India and Kazakhstan have signed an agreement on cooperation in agriculture. This means exploring the possibility of Indian farmers taking over Kazakh farmland on lease. However, a controversy over leasing of land to the Chinese just before Mr. Nazarbayev’s election had led Astana to halt this move.
Kazakhstan has traditionally supported India, whether it was at the Nuclear Suppliers’ Group, or standing by India after the Mumbai terror attacks. India was the first non-Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) destination for Mr. Nazarbayev in the early nineties. After a lukewarm spell of bilateral ties that lasted a decade, India invited Mr. Nazarbayev to be the chief guest at the Republic Day celebrations in 2009.”

“NEW DELHI: A new mine in south India could contain the largest reserves of uranium in the world, a government official said in remarks reported Tuesday, signalling a major boost for the energy-hungry nation.
The Tumalapalli mine in Andhra Pradesh state could provide up to 150,000 tonnes of uranium, Srikumar Banerjee, secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy, told reporters after a four-year survey of the site was completed.
“It’s confirmed that the mine has 49,000 tonnes of ore, and there are indications that the total quantity could be three times that amount,” Banerjee was quoted as saying in The Times of India.
“If that be the case, it will become the largest uranium mine in the world,” he said.
Previous estimates suggested that only about 15,000 tonnes of uranium would be produced at the mine, which is due to start operating by the end of the year.
No details were released on the quality of the material in Tumalapalli, a key factor as other uranium mined in India has been inferior to imports being procured from France, Kazakhstan, Russia and elsewhere.
“The new findings would only augment the indigenous supply of uranium. There would still be a significant gap. We would still have to import,” Banerjee was quoted as saying in an Indian newspaper.
India gets less than three per cent of its energy from atomic power and it hopes to raise the figure to 25 per cent by 2050.
The government has been seeking new supplies of uranium, which is refined into nuclear fuel, but it has been consistently rebuffed by major exporter Australia as India has not signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.”

Wow, this wonderful industry is spreading radiation from Fukushima and Depleted uranium dust from DU weapons all over the world, all at no cost to us. Are you feeling healthier yet?
We need to step up the accidents and use of DU weapons, and resume the open air atomic bomb testing. No need to cover up the nuclear waste.. Just put it in concrete and build all of our new buildings with it, so that we will have lots and lots of this healthy radiation, 24 hours a day..
Why not make special radiation rooms, filled with spent nuclear fuel rods. Make them into tanning beds that people can spend time in to get nice and glowing ‘hot’, with a free tan to boot.
What a wonderfully generous and kind world we live in.. free radiation for everyone!

wonder if india will buy japanese rice this or next year? of course rice from japan is not necesarily grown in japan….??
The Global Food Crisis May 22, 2008, 9:14AM EST text size: TTHow Japan Helped Ease the Rice Crisis
Prices quickly fell on Tokyo’s call to tap into its huge reserves. But how did the stash get so big, and why does rice-rich Japan import the staple?
“With prices now falling, the global rice crisis seems to be subsiding. That’s thanks in part to a policy announcement by a Japanese bureaucrat. On May 19, Japan’s Deputy Agriculture Minister, Toshiro Shirasu, said that Tokyo would release some of its massive stockpile of rice to the Philippines, selling 50,000 tons “as soon as possible” and releasing another 200,000 tons as food aid. The first shipment could reach the Philippines by late summer. Shirasu also left open the possibility of using more of its reserves to help other countries in need.
To understand Japan’s role in deflating the rice market, it helps to visit the warehouses rimming Tokyo Bay. It’s here in temperature-controlled buildings that Japan keeps millions of 30-kilogram vinyl bags of rice that it imports every year. Tokyo doesn’t need rice from the outside world: The country’s heavily subsidized farmers produce more than enough to feed the country’s 127 million people. Yet every year since 1995, Tokyo has bought hundreds of thousands of metric tons of rice from the U.S., Thailand, Vietnam, China, and Australia.”

“Japan Records Trade Surplus in September
Published on 10/24/2011 3:12:43 PM | By TradingEconomics.com, Ministry of Finance Japan
Japan recorded a ¥300.4 billion trade surplus in September, the Ministry of Finance said on October 24. The rise was led by shipments of autos to Europe and auto parts to the U.S. and China.
Japan’s exports in the month rose 2.4 percent from a year ago to 5.98 trillion yen ($78.2 billion), the second straight monthly increase.
Meanwhile, imports soared 12.1 percent to 5.68 trillion yen, rising for 21 straight months mainly due to higher energy prices.
But the figure was 61.2 percent lower than the level seen last year, reflecting the severe damage done by the March earthquake and tsunami, particularly to the supply chain.”
