Radioactive cesium detected in Fukushima shiitake, NHK, July 16, 2011:
Radioactive cesium exceeding the government standard has been detected in shiitake mushrooms grown indoors in 2 cities in Fukushima Prefecture, about 60 kilometers from the troubled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. [...]
The Fukushima prefectural government says 1,770 becquerels per kilogram of radioactive cesium was detected in mushrooms grown in Date City. The level is more than 3 times the provisional government limit [...]
Fukushima officials are to ask the farmers to recall their produce and refrain from making new shipments while determining the cause.

They are also looking into the cause of why the blown MOX Reactor #3 won’t hold nitrogen. Clueless in Fukushima.

As I said months ago, look for companies to be dealing with China Korea and other contries merging of doing deals to keep producing goods for lose of factories in the fallout zone or future zones, many will not want to buy contaminated goods !

first, mushrooms, if memory recalls, concentrate cesium better than most.
second, the water used to grow them was probably contaminated (best guess).

Finally, something that gives me hope.
Because mushrooms absorb radiation so well, what about spraying the reactors and surrounding landscape with particular mushroom spores? Since it is monsoon season, they would spread quickly and absorb at least some of the radiation. Something is better than nothing.

Radiation water filters should have been issued to everyone. This situation has been reduced to non-rocket-science at this point. Better yet would have been to evacuate everyone months ago and let the mushrooms accumulate all of the radiation they like.

Indoor mushrooms with high radiation in Japan is not a big surprise. I have read that mushrooms are Radiation sponges. Invisable cross contamination, or Airborne contamination. I wonder about the mushrooms we pick here in the wild of the Pacific Northwest- Chantrels. More than suspicious about there degree of contamination they contain. Many of these are picked and sold to buyers at roadside stands then shipped overseas.

Novamind: You are 100% right about mushrooms. I watched a wonderful TED demo from the 2010 TED presentations about just that.
GIANT and I mean HUGE mushrooms ( like trees) were once on this planet, especially in the NW.and the presenter hinted that they were there to cleanse a prior contamination of the Earth.
Wish I could lay my hands on it real quick, I will try later, but have other things to attend to right now.

They Plea for interntional help using Presidental, Govt. Legislators, whatever to put pressure on the Japanee Govt. as they had closed shelters and told them to go back ‘home’ which is highly radiated. They FEAR their childrens health. They don’t ask for money or donations, they just ask for intervention from any and all of us.

I wrote the President and my local fed. govt. legislators requesting their help to persuade the Japanese Govt to reconsider and evacuate the people away from Fukishima Prefecture.

A million of us were in the streets of San Francisco protesting the Iraq invasion. It did no good. If all of us in all the cities had been in Washington instead, it might have made a difference.
This is a war. The people are victims. They must stop acting like one. It is probably already too late but they can at least make their government officials pay for the disaster. You won’t get that by asking nicely.

I keep meeting health-conscious people who have their own organic vegetable & herb gardens. They all have excellent health and their kids really benefit. Now they will have to move them indoors or into a greenhouse structure, I guess…

More beggar the future schemes. Fracked gas wells don’t last very long and many industry sources are doubtful they will be ultimately profitable. But they do provide immediate write-offs and if industry can pass the environmental costs to the taxpayer, then they can be very profitable. NYS gets immediate cash flow too but the damage to the water will take a few years to show up. Then some wonderful corporation can purify NYC’s water for only a few cents a gallon and the politicians will have retired and moved away to a state that didn’t frack its water.

On the Japanese nuclear crisis, they simply quit reporting bad news. They pretend that it’s all over and only report good news to the public about the so called crisis. If private parties scream about the radiation that covers the US, they simply say “what radiation?” They act like there is no radiation; and if they do have to report it, they minimize it and say that it is of no consequence and nothing to be concerned about. If radiation levels reach previously established limits, they get around the problem by simply changing the limits and the dummies in dummy land never know the difference. Yet, some news does sometimes leak out from alternative sources.
On Jun 23, 2011, the Goldsmiths CXCIX published a major revelation from comments made in Malaysia by the IAEA (the International Atomic Energy Agency) to people there opposing the location of a new nuclear processing facility in Malaysia. The IAEA actually admitted that there are no safe levels in radiation poisoning.

I have a theory of how the radiation got into the mushrooms.
Shiitake are often grown on oak stumps, but they are also grown on reconstituted ‘logs’ made of sawdust and other vegetable waste.
Thrifty Japanese used straw silage to grow the mushrooms. The same radioactive stuff they fed to the cows.
It made me wonder what happened to the rice. Probably it’s in the market. No one even mentions this.
