Radioactive cesium detected in Fukushima shiitake, NHK, July 16, 2011:
Radioactive cesium exceeding the government standard has been detected in shiitake mushrooms grown indoors in 2 cities in Fukushima Prefecture, about 60 kilometers from the troubled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. [...]
The Fukushima prefectural government says 1,770 becquerels per kilogram of radioactive cesium was detected in mushrooms grown in Date City. The level is more than 3 times the provisional government limit [...]
Fukushima officials are to ask the farmers to recall their produce and refrain from making new shipments while determining the cause.

really? determining the cause? Could it have anything to do with the three Nuclear Reactor meltdowns and a forth spent fuels fire.
Insanity!!

They are also looking into the cause of why the blown MOX Reactor #3 won’t hold nitrogen. Clueless in Fukushima.
When will the government start thinking of the People that they represent first, rather than themselves?

As I said months ago, look for companies to be dealing with China Korea and other contries merging of doing deals to keep producing goods for lose of factories in the fallout zone or future zones, many will not want to buy contaminated goods !
Others have already did deals and here is the newest:
The joint company will be established as early as this year to procure parts and materials for liquid crystal displays, including glass substrates and color filters….
Sharp and Hon Hai also agreed to supply each other with LCD panels.
Under the agreement, the Japanese manufacturer will acquire middle-sized panels from its Taiwanese partner. In return, it will supply large panels of 60 inches and above.

first, mushrooms, if memory recalls, concentrate cesium better than most.
second, the water used to grow them was probably contaminated (best guess).
gotta reverse osmose the plant water, too.

Finally, something that gives me hope.
Because mushrooms absorb radiation so well, what about spraying the reactors and surrounding landscape with particular mushroom spores? Since it is monsoon season, they would spread quickly and absorb at least some of the radiation. Something is better than nothing.

great thought.

Radiation water filters should have been issued to everyone. This situation has been reduced to non-rocket-science at this point. Better yet would have been to evacuate everyone months ago and let the mushrooms accumulate all of the radiation they like.

Indoor mushrooms with high radiation in Japan is not a big surprise. I have read that mushrooms are Radiation sponges. Invisable cross contamination, or Airborne contamination. I wonder about the mushrooms we pick here in the wild of the Pacific Northwest- Chantrels. More than suspicious about there degree of contamination they contain. Many of these are picked and sold to buyers at roadside stands then shipped overseas.

Novamind: You are 100% right about mushrooms. I watched a wonderful TED demo from the 2010 TED presentations about just that.
GIANT and I mean HUGE mushrooms ( like trees) were once on this planet, especially in the NW.and the presenter hinted that they were there to cleanse a prior contamination of the Earth.
Wish I could lay my hands on it real quick, I will try later, but have other things to attend to right now.
Maybe someone else can look it up?
The other day, Ries/Risa?? forget , anyhow, “our local author and gardener” posted a video of a family in Fukishima City that was in Japanese.
I found a repost of that video this morning that had been subtitled in French and Endlish, I think by someone in France.
Here is the link with subtitles.
They Plea for interntional help using Presidental, Govt. Legislators, whatever to put pressure on the Japanee Govt. as they had closed shelters and told them to go back ‘home’ which is highly radiated. They FEAR their childrens health. They don’t ask for money or donations, they just ask for intervention from any and all of us.
Here is the video:

I wrote the President and my local fed. govt. legislators requesting their help to persuade the Japanese Govt to reconsider and evacuate the people away from Fukishima Prefecture.

I will only believe that the Japanese people take this disaster seriously when I hear about a million of them marching on their Government and demanding assistance.

A million of us were in the streets of San Francisco protesting the Iraq invasion. It did no good. If all of us in all the cities had been in Washington instead, it might have made a difference.
This is a war. The people are victims. They must stop acting like one. It is probably already too late but they can at least make their government officials pay for the disaster. You won’t get that by asking nicely.

“When the world wises up and no longer buys ANY Japanese products Japan and their people can thank their idiot leaders for their deceptive ways that caused others to stay away.”
And japanese locals purchasing non-contaminated imported products at higher black-market prices might be the first indication of the developing long-term food-contamination problem.
I hope ex-skf gets the hat-tip for providing information on the impending japanese higher-black-market-prices for imported meat-fish-produce: the problem is obvious, hiding in plain sight.

I’d say the folks in NYC have a good opportunity for some campaigning at their doorstep! If nukes are no reason to rally, maybe fracking is??? Hope dies last.

More beggar the future schemes. Fracked gas wells don’t last very long and many industry sources are doubtful they will be ultimately profitable. But they do provide immediate write-offs and if industry can pass the environmental costs to the taxpayer, then they can be very profitable. NYS gets immediate cash flow too but the damage to the water will take a few years to show up. Then some wonderful corporation can purify NYC’s water for only a few cents a gallon and the politicians will have retired and moved away to a state that didn’t frack its water.

On the Japanese nuclear crisis, they simply quit reporting bad news. They pretend that it’s all over and only report good news to the public about the so called crisis. If private parties scream about the radiation that covers the US, they simply say “what radiation?” They act like there is no radiation; and if they do have to report it, they minimize it and say that it is of no consequence and nothing to be concerned about. If radiation levels reach previously established limits, they get around the problem by simply changing the limits and the dummies in dummy land never know the difference. Yet, some news does sometimes leak out from alternative sources.
On Jun 23, 2011, the Goldsmiths CXCIX published a major revelation from comments made in Malaysia by the IAEA (the International Atomic Energy Agency) to people there opposing the location of a new nuclear processing facility in Malaysia. The IAEA actually admitted that there are no safe levels in radiation poisoning.
The Goldsmiths 199 cited this additional bombshell from the IAEA: “…government laws and regulations are not put into effect on the basis of safety (or the health and well being of people). They are put into effect on the basis of ‘benefits.’ In other words if benefits are there, safety, health and well being of people can be ignored.” And that tells the tale on the backdrop for almost all government rules, regulations and laws. They are made for so called benefits—which usually translate to profits and gains to the fat cats running things. (And that…

Radiation in Our Food
U.S.-based group of medical doctors Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR), no amount of man-made radiation in water and food is safe. “There is no safe level of radionuclide exposure, whether from food, water or other sources, period,” said Jeff Patterson, DO, immediate past president of PSR, in late March. “Exposure to radionuclides, such as iodine 131 and cesium 137, increases the incidence of cancer. For this reason, every effort must be taken to minimize the radionuclide content in food and water.”…

I have a theory of how the radiation got into the mushrooms.
Shiitake are often grown on oak stumps, but they are also grown on reconstituted ‘logs’ made of sawdust and other vegetable waste.
Thrifty Japanese used straw silage to grow the mushrooms. The same radioactive stuff they fed to the cows.
It made me wonder what happened to the rice. Probably it’s in the market. No one even mentions this.
