Bubble, bubble, toil and trouble. The vaunted cold shutdown announcements of December by the Three Stooges in Tokyo just keeps sounding more and more like Grimms fairy tales.

Is there not a single leader in Japan who can rally the people? If not they will all surely face a long painful future of sudden deaths, birth defects, and the collapse of a 6,000 year-old culture.

Perhaps the culture is so corrupt at the top that there is no hope for salvation. Perhaps it is time for the Japanese Exodus to save the race.

Perhsps thevarchipelago is finished… Suitable only to send condemned prisoners and nuclear waste from every plant in the world. Mankind has crapped in the waters of Mother Earth one time too many in Japan.

Aside from this endless sadness that's being revealed here in this article, we know there's only a few days before the first year anniversary of this catastrophe. Seeing how they've done such a wonderful job of ignoring and downplaying the significance of it, I'd like to suggest that we not leave it to the MSM to define this incident. I, for one, have already picked-out a wonderful composition of music that defines the horrors of Fukushima in subtle musical terms. I'll be forwarding this to some of you. Perhaps we can all find a piece of music or some poetry to pass around? I know this suggestion is not nearly enough of a dedication to those who have lost their lives (and will be) to this nightmare. I just don't want others wrenching-away the mic from those who've been committing our hearts and minds to this sad event throughout this long – hard – year. Let's try to think-up and do something that lights-up the internet with a million candles and prayers.

Remember, this is the beginning of what will be decades of hard truth, coming-down upon us all. We are the vanguard of this truth and must hold-fast to its power…

@Whoopie: Strange you should have picked a candle for your new avatar (which, btw, is awesome!), as I was thinking that everyone should light four candles to mark this sad occasion. The four candles can be symbolic of the four reactors. Amongst other aspects, they can be representative of ideas/concepts that we can all agree too; such as love, peace, truth and life. They can also represent the four directions of the world that will be devastated by this catastrophe.

This idea of four is fundamental to the transfer of esoteric knowledge and is easily grasped by all.

We need to define this event! Is everyone getting this? We – need – to – define – this – event! Let the people define it! Not those whose interests got us here with decades-and-decades of lies and selfishness, but rather those who will suffer as a consequence of this event.

So, let's start beating the pots and make lots of noise! We have only a few days left…

@jec: I'm not sure what the appropriate quantity should be. If there are a known amount of reactors that are in meltdown, then the count should equal only those. It's my understanding that there are several NPPs throughout Japan that are in dire straights for one reason or another. I'm thinking of keeping to a symbolic count that represents what's actually known. So, just how many NPPs are in actual meltdown? If it's only three, then that's the appropriate count. Is it more?

Having clocked up more than 200 gamma spectrum's myself (More than 1000 hours.) using Sodium Iodide NaI detector and software PRA (Pulse Recorder Analyser.), i would not be too quick to proclaim finding Iodine 131 based on using this detector alone or this gamma spectrum seen here. I could be mistaken but i do not think so at this time.

(Gamma spectrometry is now affordable to the layman like myself.)

The gamma spectrum seen here does not appear to have cooked for very long (Very hairy.).

The fuzzyness can be attributed to beta emission creating a secondary gamma continuum and might explain the aforementioned hairyness seen in the sample spectrum. It would not surprise me. In this case, using beta filters (Certain acrylic plastics.) will help make the spectrum clearer.

It appears to be a 1024 channel approx and for positive ID the next step is to get High resolution gamma spectrometry using a Germanium detector and liquid nitrogen cooling.

I am not saying i disagree with the result, merely that it would not be conclusive and should be only be used as an indicator in my limited experience so far.

I do not see any clear peaks in the spectrum seen above.,

In any case, a second and third reading should be obtained along the lines that if it is iodine 131, there should be a predictable decay of the Iodine 131 and a disappearance of that particular peak i claim is not clear.
        That would be more conclusive.
In any case, i would treat it as though the finding was positive until proven otherwise.
In these cases (Where children and health is at stake.) it is probably wise to proceed along the lines of "guilty until proven Innocent".

Obviously this subject is in your comfort zone spectro and it is very interesting. One question I have is why can't they deflect the beta emmisions (if there are any) through a magnetic field to better see the gamma spectrum?

Second thought, block the beta with some sort of material would be easier.

            Report Comment

          • Spectrometising

Awesome question hbjon, and it can be done, but i suspect the usual method is to use acrylic plastic filters that block/absorb the beta particles, but allow the gamma to fly right through. A few mm's will do using the right plastic.

The problem with magnetic fields is they are complex to set up without affecting the photomultiplier tube (PMT) within the Sodium Iodide detectors that detects the scintillations of light when the gamma hits the crystal.

That is my understanding so far, so i guess it is easier to use a filter. Much like using paper to block/absorb/filter alpha particles which are easy to stop.

Also, there is usually very little room in the Lead shielded chamber where the sample is usually measured,

HmmM…lots of considerations and i am still a newborn lamb in the spring on this subject.

Can one do an xray spectroscopy of the air released from the tap water and see if they can find Xe131? While they are at it, let's see how much helium they find. Tritium and I131 will decay into noble gases. Is this one of the consideration you were referring to?

Thanks moomshellblue. They are a collection of gamma spectrums of all sorts of things and inclued soil samples from Japan. They are not all my work and represent the work of those like myself who are learning about gamma spectrometry.
There are lots, both good and bad, clear and not clear, and all kinds of nukes as i said.
If the reading taken of the gamma spectrum above were longer than 90 minutes the result might be more clear also.
The ones i have been doing lately can be two days long on weak sources.

Because of the short half-life of Iodine-131, wouldnʻt a rough "indicator" be enough? wouldnʻt even a low level be enough to signal its presence? Are you suggesting this group is getting a false indication of Iodine-131?

Obviously criticality continues what does this mean for decay heat? Is it like starting at day one or rather 311? Anyone have an opinion on this finding of Iodine 131 as it suggest to me that the corms are still quite active. I hope I'm wrong and that we are a year into decay heat concerning the corium but…

Coriums are still going critical, and the groundwater is getting contaminated. Every re-criticality they get hotter, and then they cool off with decay heat. Then the cycle continues.

So they are not losing any heat or any significant amount as my understanding is these coriums are as hot as the surface of the sun? Bummer I was hoping things would cool down so to speak.
