Radioactive materials found off Miyagi and Ibaraki, NHK, May 28, 2011:

Japan’s science ministry has detected extraordinarily high levels of radioactive cesium in seafloor samples collected off Miyagi and Ibaraki Prefectures. [...]

Radioactive substances were found in all locations, including those off Miyagi and Ibaraki Prefectures, which had not been previously investigated.

Radioactive cesium 137, measuring 110 becquerels per kilogram or about 100 times the normal level, was found in samples collected from the seabed 30 kilometers off Sendai City and 45 meters beneath the surface. [...]

[Professor Takashi Ishimaru of the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology] said monitoring must be stepped up over a larger area, as radioactive materials in the seabed do not dissolve quickly, and can accumulate in the bodies of larger fish that eat shrimp and crabs that live on the seafloor.

Imagine that: heavy isotopes tend to settle on the sea floor. I’m sure if they thought that Cesium would make salt compounds and dilute away. Fat chance. What you have now is an impossible to clean up situation in the sea. Contamination, including ugly long lived isotopes like I-129, Sr-90 and many others, will be there for the long haul, slowly building up the the food chain until it comes back to us people. Not much you can do about it now.

      Nuclear reprocessing
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_reprocessing

The first large-scale nuclear reactors were built during World War II. These reactors were designed for the production of plutonium for use in nuclear weapons. The only reprocessing required, therefore, was the extraction of the plutonium (free of fission-product contamination) from the spent natural uranium fuel. In 1943, several methods were proposed for separating the relatively small quantity of plutonium from the uranium and fission products. The first method selected, a precipitation process called the Bismuth Phosphate process, was developed and tested at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in the 1943-1945 period to produce quantities of plutonium for evaluation and use in weapons programs. ORNL produced the first macroscopic quantities (grams) of separated plutonium with these processes.

The Bismuth Phosphate process was first operated on a large scale at the Hanford Site, in the latter part of 1944. It was successful for plutonium separation in the emergency situation existing then, but it had a significant weakness: the inability to recover uranium.

The first successful solvent extraction process for the recovery of pure uranium and plutonium was developed at ORNL in 1949. The PUREX process is the current method of extraction. Separation plants were also constructed at Savannah River Site and a smaller plant at West Valley, New York which closed by 1972 because of its inability to meet new regulatory requirements.[4]

Reprocessing of civilian fuel has long been employed in Europe, at the COGEMA La Hague site in France, the Sellafield site in the United Kingdom, the Mayak Chemical Combine in Russia, and at sites such as the Tokai plant in Japan, the Tarapur plant in India, and briefly at the West Valley Reprocessing Plant in the United States.

In October 1976, fear of nuclear weapons proliferation (especially after India demonstrated nuclear weapons capabilities…

using reprocessing technology) led President Gerald Ford to issue a Presidential directive to indefinitely suspend the commercial reprocessing and recycling of plutonium in the U.S. On April 7, 1977 , President Jimmy Carter banned the reprocessing of commercial reactor spent nuclear fuel. The key issue driving this policy was the serious threat of nuclear weapons proliferation by diversion of plutonium from the civilian fuel cycle, and to encourage other nations to follow the USA lead.[5] . After that, only countries that already had large investments in reprocessing infrastructure continued to reprocess spent nuclear fuel. President Reagan lifted the ban in 1981, but did not provide the substantial subsidy that would have been necessary to start up commercial reprocessing.[6]

        Report Comment

        • Tenor

Strong moves were made during Carter’s presidency to build the reprocessing facility at Savannah River Plant. This helped mobilize the southern Anti-nuclear power movement. The first large civil disobedience demonstration at SRP opposed the reprocessing plant. Hundreds of people including myself were arrested.

SRP is built very close to the 2nd strongest earthquake (1886) in U.S. history. It was ‘heard’ from NYC to Havana and damaged a brick building as far away as Atlanta. Huge quantities of LIQUID hi-level rad waste were (presumably are stored in weakening tanks at SRP. I’m not familiar with SRP for last 20+ years. In the 1980′s it routinely leaked’tritium into the water more or less continually.

A highway goes through the plant. It was against the law to stop or take photos. Steam billowed off the marshes used as SRP’s heat sink. Blackened dead tree trunks still were standing on the marsh land. “Why don’t they understand?”

        MOX fuel
Reprocessing of commercial nuclear fuel to make MOX is done in the United Kingdom and France, and to a lesser extent in Russia, India and Japan. China plans to develop fast breeder reactors and reprocessing. Reprocessing of spent commercial-reactor nuclear fuel is not permitted in the United States due to nonproliferation considerations. All of these nations have long had nuclear weapons from military-focused research reactor fuels except Japan.
The United States is building a MOX plant at the Savannah River Site in South Carolina. The Tennessee Valley Authority and Duke Energy are interested in using the reactor fuel from the conversion of weapons-grade plutonium.[5]
        Thermal reactors
About 30 thermal reactors in Europe (Belgium, Switzerland, Germany and France) are using MOX[6] and a further 20 have been licensed to do so.

Fukushima to Restart Using MOX Fuel for First Time
          Sep 17 2010
Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) said it was preparing to restart the 784 megawatt No.3 reactor at its Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear plant on Friday, at which it is set to burn so-called mixed-oxide (MOX) fuel for the first time.
Fukushima is a nuclear power plant located in the town of Okuma in the Futaba District of Fukushima Prefecture. With 6 operating units located on site, Fukushima is one of the largest nuclear plant sites in the world. Fukushima is the first nuclear plant to be constructed and run entirely by TEPCO.
Asia’s biggest utility said if all goes as planned, the reactor will start generating power on Sept. 22 and begin commercial operations on Oct. 26.
It had shut the reactor at the northern Japan plant for planned maintenance on June 19.
During the shutdown, TEPCO prepared for uranium dioxide as well as MOX fuel to be burned at the reactor, making it the first time the company will use the recycled fuel.
Other power companies have started using the recycled fuel as part of Japan’s goal to move towards a closed cycle where it recycles its own spent fuel and then burns recovered uranium and plutonium as MOX fuel.

Lets drill a hole to the mantle, send it down there to collect to the center.

Once that is done, all reactors will need a hole next to it in the mantle. the basements will have an ally way that when and if it melts, down ~400km to the mantel.

    from wikepedia:

A novel method of exploring the uppermost few hundred kilometres of the Earth was recently proposed, consisting of a small, dense, heat-generating probe which melts its way down through the crust and mantle while its position and progress are tracked by acoustic signals generated in the rocks.[24] The probe consists of an outer sphere of tungsten about one metre in diameter inside which is a cobalt-60 radioactive heat source. It was calculated that such a probe will reach the oceanic Moho in less than 6 months and attain minimum depths of well over 100 km in a few decades beneath both oceanic and continental lithosphere.[25]

  • Power outages, downed communication lines knocked out most radiation monitoring systems in disaster areas
    Kyodo Sunday, May 29, 2011

Most radiation monitoring systems in Fukushima, Miyagi and Ibaraki prefectures broke down temporarily after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, preventing local authorities from gauging the ensuing nuclear crisis, prefectural officials said.

Monitoring systems in other prefectures with nuclear power plants also face similar risks of a breakdown, requiring an urgent review, analysts say.

Twenty-two of the 23 round-the-clock radiation monitors installed around the crisis-hit Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant and at the nearby Fukushima No. 2 nuclear complex stopped sending data to the prefectural monitoring center about three hours after the quake, officials said.

It boggles my mind to think about whoever is responsible for a) using weather as a weapon of mass destruction, b) deliberately setting off earthquakes and cyclones for profit, c) purposefully compromising all ability to monitor or control nuclear reactions set in motion, d) seeing to it that most of humankind is kept in the dark about the invisible destruction. These conspirators either 1) truly believe they and theirs will escape from being included in the affected class of humans (moving to bunkers in southern hemisphere?), or 2) are members of a class of suicidal mass murderers who pride themselves on how big a killing they are committing, possibly in the name of their favorites-playing god. Eat miso, paint neck with iodine tincture, stop dairy, filter water, do tai chi, stay out of the rain if possible for short term, is the hope I got out of that video. As things currently stand the Japanese have no choice but to keep pouring water on the melted down reactors. That water will keep building up until there’s another accidental, or intentional, dump into the sea. This may go on for months to years and the amount is already in the millions of gallons (they’ve been releasing the figures as tons, because it makes the numbers smaller.).

If the radio nuclides don’t quickly precipitate out (I hope they do) then in a few months time this radioactivity will reach the Bering Sea and then the Gulf of Alaska. (Because that’s how the currents run off the Japanese coast.) These are some of the richest fishing areas of the world. Of course that’s the first US territory that the airborne fallout hits, too.
