Atsunao Marui, an underground water expert at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, said a frozen wall could be water-tight but is normally intended for use for a couple of years and is not proven for long-term use as planned in the outline. The decommissioning process is expected to take about 40 years.

“We still need a few layers of safety backups in case it fails,” Marui told the Associated Press. “Plus the frozen wall won’t be ready for another two years, which means contaminated water would continue to leak out.”

Marui said additional measures should be taken to stop contaminated water from keep traveling under the seabed during that time and leak further out in the sea.

Readings at Tokyo Electric Fukushima plant showed radiation as high as 2,200 mSv
    TOKYO | Tue Sep 3, 2013
(Reuters) – Radiation readings around tanks holding contaminated water at the crippled Tokyo Electric Fukushima plant have spiked more than 20 percent to their highest level, Japan's nuclear regulator said, again raising questions about the clean-up of the worst atomic disaster in 27 years.
Readings at Tokyo Electric Fukushima plant showed radiation as high as 2,200 mSv, the Nuclear Regulation Authority said, up from 1,800 mSv at the weekend. Exposure to radiation of those levels would be enough to kill an unprotected person within hours.

    • SteveMT

Yup. What could be worse than 1,800 mSv/h?…well how about 2,200 mSv/h. A two year window of opportunity to try and fix this mess has been missed because of egos and pocketbooks. As these numbers rise look for a change in reporting radiation levels as in moving the decimal point. This minimization may be the only real optional left as ridiculous as that sounds.
"However, what is most surprising, is that neither Japan nor TEPCO has figured out how to make the situation so much more palatable. Instead of reporting the radiation level in millisieverts/hour, it should just convert everything in megasieverts or, better yet, gigasieverts. Because even in a country of hypnotized, irradiated Nikkei225 day-trading sheep 2,200 mSv/h looks far more disturbing that 0.0000022 GSv/h."

"Incidentally, the US mainspin media may also take a hint: once the shooting starts in Syria, presenting casualties in the "gigapeople" order of magnitude will make the coming bloodshed seem hardly notable. In fact it won't even be a "statistics" – it will be a decimal comma."

"measures should be taken to stop contaminated water " might as well be "I should be given a date with Jessica Alba."

    People are in a stupor.

I can't wait for an expert or scientist or government official to just come out the truth and say "We need Superman!"

    • obewanspeaks obewanspeaks

Z, come on you know where Super Man is!

He's probably hanging out over at the local strip club waiting for his next lap dance! 😉

      • zardoz2012 zardoz2012

Wait. I'm Superman? How could that be? (pops open shirt buttons at strip club to reveal a big "S" symbol. Cue John Williams music.) 🙂

This is a really terrifying situation the planet is in because I really think it would take the powers of a superhero to fix this and we don't have any superheroes.

Even a superhero like Batman couldn't fix this. If you made what's going on at Fukushima the threat to humanity in a comic book it would take a superhero with the powers of Superman to fix this problem. Or maybe even a team of superheroes like The Avengers or The Fantastic Four; one superhero (unless it was Superman) would not be enough to save us…if this was fictional, as in science fiction. But this is real.

Hello to all ENENewsers … Nuclear profiteers and Nuclear apologists have betrayed all life on Earth with their lies about “Safe, Clean, Nuclear Energy” … these nasty people will try to disappear into the crowd when the truth is evident of the destruction they have caused … take note now who they are and remember their words to be used to judge them for their crimes … $$POD$$

  • rockyourworld

i cant believe the billionaires arent stepping up and offering endless dough to fix the planet just so they can live to spend all their money, weird

    • zardoz2012 zardoz2012

Yes. And not even a celebrity charity concert or event. Bruce Springsteen was part of the charity-raising concert for Hurricane Sandy victims. Where is the concert to raise money to save the planet from Fukushima Daichi?

The silence on this topic from Hollywood and the entertainment industry is deafening. It shows me that this could really be the ELE that we all secretly feared it is.

Stopping water flow under the seabed is same as stopping water flow around the reactors >>
Use another bigger deeper ice-wall drilled into the seabed under the new bigger double-ring of breakwaters built 500meters outside the existing breakwater.

The bigger breakwater can have a big set of locks built out of a big old steel drydock fetched into the seawall with swinging sea-doors inside between the wingwalls.

Supply cryogenic from a LNG FSRU parked in a harbor built on the outside of the new bigger badder breakwater.

Pay Attention:… It's not too late to end this disaster with a blessing, turn it around 180degrees and Fukushima becomes a busy seaport city with all new technology and plenty of LNG from Valdez, Kitimat, Sakhalin, and deep methane-hydrates found in the Japan Trench when looking for a good safe spot to sequester some of the low-level nukewaste safely.. after it's securely compounded tightly with silica and cast in cement.

What is it with you, 21st C? You are sounding more and more like a crazy person. Do you just like hearing yourself talk?

I mean, why don't we just magically ship the radioactivity to Mars, then embark on your fancy non-doable construction projects?

        Please. Have more respect.

          Please. Have more respect. Yourself.
You are, of course, entitled to your opinions, as we all are, but do you not see your own frequent rudeness to others?

        • We not They; 21st century is entitled to his opinions. We will never know if his theories would work because sadly Japan is looking for cheap solutions and won't spend money. We not They Finally do not understand the concept of constructive criticism. I don't know what you are trying to accomplish with a line like " You are sounding more and more like a crazy person. Do you just like hearing yourself talk?" Just like when someone commented that Bloomberg was backing gun control elements there was We not They extremely offended that anyone would remotely be pro gun. But it was ok for We not They to espouse anti gun sentiments. The reality is both viewpoints have there merits. What makes Enenews unique is that even pro nuke trolls can post here. This is a melting point of ideas. But please be more polite with your criticism and perhaps less emotional.

LNG (liquid natural gas) and deep methane-hydrates cause global warming.

Radiation levels at Fukushima Daiichi are reaching the levels where no one can any longer get near to Fukushima Daiichi even with protective gear.

This level of radiation will keep getting greater for at least 250,000 years.

      • No Go, there is no simple answer that fixes this. We take a planetary hit and hopefully not a personal hit.

We act for change, no nukes, more renewable. And kill coal too.

And control China….good Lord, no small efforts we make will matter as China rapes their land and thus our Home Planet./

Radiation readings at Tokyo Electric Fukushima showed 2,200 mSv present
    September 04, 2013 Russia Today
Radiation levels around tanks holding contaminated water at the crippled Tokyo Electric Fukushima plant in Japan have hit a new high, officials with Japan’s nuclear regulator said Wednesday.
The readings taken by the Nuclear Regulation Authority just above the ground near tanks at Tokyo Electric Fukushima plant showed as much as 2,200 mSv present, surpassing the previous high measure of 1,800 mSv found just four days prior. Both levels are potent enough to kill an unprotected human within hours.

  • I think they are lying when they say the decommissioning process will take forty years. After two years they still won't even bring forth any theories on where the corium (s) is/are. Probably three unique tales. Spent fuel pool #4 with the freshest nuclear waste reminiscent of the leaning tower of Pizza but in an earthquake zone on spongy ground. Tons and tons of nuclear water/waste in cheap tanks bolted together. Leak Leak into underground mountain fed stream/river "groundwater". Do I need an expert to tell me Contamination from Fukushima is traveling “under the seabed” and spreading further out in Pacific Ocean ????
I don't know after two years the only progress I see is that finally the government is forced to take a more active role. If you divide forty by two we should be about 5% done but I don't think they have even started decommissioning they are barely keeping the mess under control, think they have fallen back by twenty percent or so. And by the way I still haven't figured out who decided to lie to the citizens of Canada and USA, never mind Japan. Orwell, I appreciate the poetry but really all I want is a simple old fashioned crucifixion posted on Facebook so we can monitor the progress.

Hey Mark, this may be simpler –
a cellar, a chair, short lengths of rope,
a tepco exec deprived of hope,
persuaded to speak of what he knows,
      captured, of course, on video.
Reminiscent, I think, of the Tupamaros.

      • No go on torture. We cannot fall to that level.

        • Stock, I think we are talking tongue in cheek. However the politicians seem to keep no promises, lie through their teeth and still collect a pension. Ditto with the business types who are reckless with our environment for their profit. There is no accountability. Crucifixion would level the playing field.
Crucifixion for lying politicians and Executives who pollute the earth. Whatever is going on at Fukushima, nobody is going to jail and no one is talking prosecution so where is the accountability?

  • We Not They Finally

So (best case scenario!) they'll spend two years (maybe — if they get to it at all) building an ice wall (if that's doable), which will deteriorate after another two years, like the sub-standard tanks. And what ABOUT "under the seabed"? How did the toxic water get THERE?

And then wouldn't a gazillion gallons of toxic water flowing uncontrollably "under the seabed" be a whole new dimension of an unstoppable disaster that no one has even been addressing?

It's gotten like a suggestion box in a lunatic asylum in Japan. There is no actual plan, there is no will, there is no commitment, there are no resources put forward. It's just one big giant suggestion box, while the world as we know it disappears.

  • many moons

I think they should start with a budget in the trillions…no all the money and resources in the world to save the world. Then get scientist together to use technologies already in place to mine the melted fuel and all the other radioactive material as if it were oil or gold…find and collect every last broken fuel rod as if it were worth millions of dollars, gather all the polluted water and put it into all those missiles and send it out of our solar system…we could do it…..a lot of death and suffering but we will have that anyway and an end to our planet….the problem is only increasing.

"Marui said additional measures should be taken to stop contaminated water from keep traveling under the seabed during that time and leak further out in the sea."

Funny that nobody mentions the obvious solution: Extend the half-built Impermeable Wall in a rectangle completely around Reactors1-4. Be cone in another 6 months. Two crews, working on both ends.

They need to control water level under those reactor ruins.
They need to stop the inflow of groundwater under the reactors.
Where do I send my two cents? 😉

  • NeverAnyDanger

They can't even safely store contaminated water for 2 years – how are they going to make it to 40 years or however long it will really take? Will SPF 4 even stand for 2 more years while the unproven ice wall is built? How many problems will they run into with that?

The situation seems to be moving so fast right now they won't even get to the ice wall. Once it's totally out of control they can stop spending money and tell us all it's really alright. People don't seem to care or even remember it's still going on.
