Title: 119 of 132 people positive from sampling survey of radioactive substances in urine in Iwate
Source: Fukushima Diary
Date: Apr. 29, 2012
Iwate prefecture conducted sampling survey of radioactive substances in urine in Ichinoseki city and Oshu city.
The result published on 3/2/2012 shows cesium was measured from 119 of 132 people (90.1%). The highest reading was 6 Bq/L.
On 4/16/2012, the chairman of Iwate association of obstetricians and gynecologists, Kobayashi sent public questions to Tasso, Iwate governor. [...]
Translations of Selected Questions
- [Are] the meeting minutes of the assessing committee disclosed? If not, we demand to know the reason.
- Is there any schedule to conduct research about the diet of the children who they measured cesium from the urine of and about their symptoms? If not, we demand to know the reason.
- We think we shall continue to conduct children’s urine test and health inspection from now on. What is the view of Iwate prefecture?
- Please tell us how much of cesium per L in urine corresponds to “1 mSv/h” or 100mSv/Life on the assumption that a 40kg of a child continuously takes cesium for 365 days after Fukushima accident / urine = 1L/d.
- Please give us documented answers for those questions above by 5/16/2012. We will disclose the content of the answer to media.

Eeeeeeek!
Well done for the physicians. Quite disturbing though that the testing was done on 3/2, now the results are published, and answers to the most reasonable questions will (might) be answered middle of May!!
Until then, everyone will just go on enjoying their cesium meals and drinks.
tick tock….

tic toc indeed.
Good fo physicians to stand up and demand answers… finally.
This may sounds crazy but there is a circle of cesium enriched beef eaters. Pretty hardcore for my liking. Beef is of course from Fukushima.
Report Comment
More likely other crops… Beef is a taboo food now for many Honshu residents unless it is imported. Sell the bad beef to gaijin and buy beef from Argentina. Not so many mad cow concerns in Japan anymore. The odds look pretty good for imported beef versus the nasty odds for homegrown meat.
Report Comment
There was another mad cow disease case in California recently. Japan and Korea don't like American beef because of the mad cow issue. Just as well, American beef is contaminated too.
Report Comment
Andii is right. There is a group of beef eaters, eating beef in defiance of reports of contamination. I think they are among the groups in Japan trying to promote local products to avoid economic losses for the local farmers. The story was here, or at a link to Fukushima Diary or Enformable. 'Pretty sure it was posted here recently.

I'd sure like to know what it is the researchers found that would neutralize the radiation. The person interviewed in the report from today about doctors finding terrible health effects in people from Fukushima talked about it in the interview.
She said people are too confused, collectively, to know what to do. So they are not exploring and implementing things that could possibly help.

Oh, sorry, this was supposed to be in response to Shiverca's comment.

This story comes from Lori at FD, but I hope he comes and reads the comments.
Last month they held contest of prettiest student who only ate Fukushima food, Is this how they made sure they qualified?.
A list of names should be kept, of participants, and a yearly reunion to track the heath of these people. A long term study must be documented.
Report Comment
Spin doctors twisted the human experiment as 'contest', anything to make it sounds ok. Probably all data will be handed over to the US?
Report Comment
Shouldn't everyone, thousands, be tested! Why only 132?
Statistically, I guess over 100 with 90% showing positive is enough to make a point.
How much Plutonium or Strontium did they get?
Report Comment
In that vein, how did the 10% avoid the cesium? Do they eat differently? Do they have different lifestyles? Are they different genetically?
Is there something about them that might help save others, if understood?
Report Comment
Geeze,…my mind also went right to the 10% who MIRACULOUSLY came up clean.
But I was not as 'constructive/positive as you,…(big surprise).
I concluded the other 10% were in nursing homes, on oxygen, taking their food through a TPN, or PRN. (Said bottled 'food/nutrient' is PRE-311, of course!)

Really good questions aigeezer. It's got to be more than luck.
Maybe they were happy? (sarcasm)
Report Comment
Maybe they decided that was a "statistically significant" sample size, of people. A sample size that would provide reliable results that can be extrapolated to the larger population. Not possible to tell w/o running the statistical formulae for determining sample size, "n" .
Report Comment
Reply was to Chas Aha. The other 10%? Maybe no cesium because it isn't always excreted in urine. Urine results may not indicate body burden. My opinion anyway. Hit or miss? Maybe on another day, or after eating different foods, results of urine testing would differ.
Am going to find out what testing method my doctor's office uses to test for Cesium. They began to find it in people in California (near Santa Rosa, CA) last fall.
Report Comment
HoTaters, could you expand on this? Why did the doctors start testing for cesium in their patients in CA? Was it at the patients' request? What were the findings, if available?
Is this a widely known test which we can request in other states? I sure would like to know this type of information for my family.
After the horrible projections of thyroid contamination numbers by the NRC's affiliates for California children should they continue to receive exposure to the levels of fallout they detected last Spring, it would behoove all parents to monitor these levels in their own children if this test is available to them…
Report Comment
Nobody will have been told the results of testing like this, tests like these are always done that way. It sounds like the doctors have done this off of their own bat so the numbers tested could only be a statistically meaningful number not a diagnostical number.
Report Comment
I unfortunately would tend to agree with you on this, The Blue Light. But I am sure with enough digging, one may be able to find one ethical doctor and lab willing to give the true results of such a test, yes?
Report Comment
Back on June 29, 2011, the levels detected were almost six times lower than those reported now.
"The highest amount of cesium-134 was from an 8-year-old girl, at 1.13 becquerels per liter. The highest amount of cesium-137 was from a 7-year-old boy, at 1.30 becquerels per liter."

The antidote for radioactive Cesium poisoning is Prussian Blue.
What are the possible side effects of Prussian blue (Radiogardase)?
Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Tell your caregivers at once if you have a serious side effect such as severe constipation or stomach pain.
Less serious side effects may include mild constipation or minor stomach discomfort.

Sorry,…..had it out with family this weekend. I will no longer ALLOW them to ridicule me for believing about FUKU,…nor my desire to inform them. The door is shut! They are dead people walking,…..and it is INJURIOUS to me,…now I must better protect myself!

Hi Jill. Sorry to hear about your family troubles. Seems most of us here are facing the same struggles. I know how frustrating it can be. I always try to keep in mind just how persuasive our opposition is. They have been impressive in their success of keeping people misinformed/uninformed. Couple that with what a hard reality it is to accept and it makes it a little easier to forgive them.

In the hour of darkness and peril and need,
The people will waken and listen to hear…"

Hi Jill, I'm having the same problems with everyone around me. Work, friends, family. No one believes that a 3 way nuclear meltdown is a life threatening concern…then you ask yourself…"how could it NOT be???" How could it not enter into the atmosphere and the water???? It would take a miricle for that to be true.
I find that most people DON"T want to know about it cause they Don't want to deal with it….
But other people, like us, realize that just isn't real. We have to deal with it cause it's real and we are real people.
Try not to get offended, deep down, they know you are right…but if they agree with you they will have to change and they don't want to….
I just slip in little phrases with disclaimers and see where they land it's all I can do….they have locked onto their safety blanket call denial…the more you try to pry loose the blanket the harder and nastier they hold on.

So sorry, StillJill. You meant well, trying to help them understand the dangers of Fuku fallout exposure, but they obviously are not receptive. There is only so much one can do…("You can lead a horse to water…")
You can sleep well, knowing at least you tried. But I know it hurts, not having family who believe you or who want to hear anything about Fuku. But if you can find peace with this, knowing it isn't about YOU, then that's all you can do, right? Hugs to you!

The 6 Bq/L is what is being excreted in urine. One has to wonder how much higher the body burdens of cesium are, in these people. There must be a way to calculate how much is excreted, assuming ongoing exposure, to determine how much is actually inside a person's body.

Very good point!

This ratio looks like 100Bq Whole-body content:1Bq urine excretion by the Figure in this Swedish study from 1999. [See this Figure (#1) in the study.]
http://marcosaba.tripod.com/S0265931X9900024.pdf
3.1. Whole-body content of 137Cs and 40K
Typical values for the total 137Cs content in the subjects of the Lund reference group ranged from 20 to 400 Bq, which is evident from Fig. 1, where the daily excretion level of 137Cs is plotted vs. the whole-body burden of 137Cs (non-pooled
individual data). The whole-body burden levels were more than one order of magnitude lower than was measured in the 1960s by LideHn and Gustafsson (1966).

The units in that paper is total cesium in becquerels for body burdens, and total Bq of urinary output. They don't have weights of the subjects, or total amount of urinary output. So the body burden is not in units of Bq/kg, and the urinary cesium levels are not in units of Bq/l. At least as far as I can tell from skimming that paper.
So it's hard to relate it to Bandazhevsky's 50 Bq/kq leading to irreversible lesions of organs.

Thanks for clarification, Bobby1. Reading some more of that paper, it looks like there are a lot of variables involved, i.e. potassium intake, age, weight, renal function, and co-morbidities.

Another battery of 100% positive urine tests in Fukushima
Radioactive substances were found in urine samples of all of 10 surveyed children from Fukushima Prefecture in May.
http://mdn.mainichi.jp/mdnnews/national/news/20110630p2g00m0dm106000c.html
According to the urine test, 1.13 Becquerels of radioactive cesium-134 per 1 liter of urine, the largest amount for the isotope among the 10 surveyed children, was found from an 8-year-old girl, while the largest amount of cesium-137 at 1.30 Becquerels was found in a 7-year-old boy.
David Boilley, president of the French nongovernmental organization (NGO) ACRO radioactivity measuring body, said at a press conference in Tokyo that the results of the survey on 10 boys and girls in Fukushima City aged between 6 and 16 suggest there is a high possibility that children in and near the city have been exposed to radiation internally. ACRO also investigated radiation exposure of children who resided near the site of 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster.

heres acros statement of the land contamination being comparable with chernobyl
…Urines of children living in Fukushima town (19-21st of May 2011) … The contamination is very large and comparable to the environment of Chernobyl. … If we calculated the contamination of the caesium 137 in becquerels per square … Pasture is also contaminated by cesium 134 and 137 at levels that allows grazing…."
and this from the iaea
but does give intake outake measurements… sort off??
"In November 1986, seven months after the Chernobyl accident, a study was undertaken on the daily caesium-137 urine excretion from IAEA staff. The observed mean daily value was 12.2 becquerel per day (Bq/d), corresponding to 0.67% of the whole body content, in good agreement with the values reported in international surveys (range of 0.3% to 1.3 %). The result was also in good agreement with the calculated daily intake (from food) derived from body measurements done on the same subjects. In April 1990, at the request of the Byelorussian authorities, measurements were performed on four of their nationals."
