OHTAWARA, JAPAN, Oct 17 — 800,000 pounds of radioactive ash have piled up at a garbage incineration plant over 100 km from the Fukushima meltdowns, according to a report on Reuters by Kiyoshi Takenaka.

The Ohtawara plant is projected to run out of protected storage space in two weeks, after which radioactive ash will have to be left outdoors with no proper shelter.

A city official explained why the ash has not been taken to a local dump: “Residents say they are worried about their children’s health and grandchildren’s health. Faced with such pleas, we just cannot make a move.”

“Researchers say that problems arising from the radiation, scattered over mountains, rivers and residential areas, are set to persist for years,” reports Reuters. “The problem is here to stay.”

Kobe University professor Tomoya Yamauchi said, “I doubt the problem will go away in a year or two. It takes 30 years for caesium 137 to decay by half. Each time it rains, caesium deposited in mountains will be washed down to where people live.”

In northern Japan, government data shows the amount of stored-up radioactive ash and dehydrated sludge is up 63 percent in the last 11 weeks.

    Insane!
How long will it take to collect all the debris, burn it, and cover everything with radioactive ash? First Honshu then…Hokai…and on and on…then…

“In northern Japan, stored-up radioactive ash and dehydrated sludge from the sewage treatment process alone totaled 52,000 tones in mid-September, up 63 percent from levels at the end of July, data from the Transport Ministry showed.

The volume is still growing by about 360 tones a day.”

so that means there is about 63,000 tons and they say that they will have it under control by december!! so there will be another 30,000 tons by christmas…

2 years before emmissions stop! add another 130, 000 tons a year…maybe a reduction over time though!! wonder how many bequerals that is?? you know i hate zeroes!!

Radium in bottles WAS the source for one hot spot in Tokyo.

Of course this is only ONE out of many, many spots discovered.

hot spots are everywhere, even beyond tokyo.
Radium was not the source for this hot spot.

Radium is an alpha emitter, blocked by air , paper, skin and GLASS-the vials holding the radium.

Simple indicators of this are the higher readings on the ground at that location.
Consider that if the readings on the street were so high, then the radium inside the house would be a fatal dose to approach.
Also, the response time by the government to this specific report of radioactivity was unprecedented during this crisis. They have NEVER gotten off their arse this fast before.

Seems to me, they will sacrifice all quality/quantity of life to keep their economic liveblood flowing.

Where is the samuri sword in all of this madness? When so many governing and buisiness bodies in japan DESPARATELY need to become aqainted with its buisiness end.

If the cesium is there to stay then logic should dictate that the people should leave. I feel great sympathy for the people but they cannot sit there and wait for the government to pay for them relocation. They will be (likely already are) internally contaminated and become ill from it if they wait.

The people should all pack up their most valued items and just LEAVE. Leave and then find out what you can get in terms of support. Would you rather live in a radioactive fallout zone or be living in some community shelter far from the contamination? That should be an easy one to answer.

If this were Godzilla attacking Fukushima, the people would flee in terror but the radioactive fallout is imperceptible so people do not feel the threat. This is the real terror about the fallout. People must leave as this is worse than any giant lizard attacking your city. In such case you could hide, seek shelter and then come back to rebuild but this has essentially permanently destroyed some areas for the next 10′s of thousands of years. People must detach themselves from their love of the land and leave. I did it, I realize how emotionally difficult it is as I am battling the anxiety and depression constantly but at least we are as far as we can be from the contamination source for now.

Leaving your land of birth is not easy even if you have a nice carrot winking at you from your dream destination.

      Following this:

Making any decision in a state of depression is difficult: depression swallows energy and you need energy to make your brain work.

Brain work is necessary in order carefully and irrevocably to come to a decision to leave the land of your birth, be this your nation, your town, or your farm.

Can’t expect individuals to organize themselves in this state of mind.

And be in no doubt that the still honourable Japanese people are in large measure well aware of the pollution of their landscape.

The above however might explain why there appears so much inertia where we as onlookers would expect panic, wholesale evacuation without reference to the authorities.

      Leadership.

This is where the inspiration and charisma of true leadership can make a difference. Sadly, the no longer honourable Japanese authorities seem to have discounted this possibility.

      ?

The truly evil thing about this contamination is…that no one can ‘see’ it until the effects appear, and it is too late then. It is probably too late now, but I’d still recommend that they leave. didn’t Russia offer to take Japanese refugees?

            B&B, with respect.

As a first worlder and faux third worlder through family, culture, love, and commitment, I understand a little bit – probably more than you show here – how the relationship between 1W and 3W works.

While zapped expresses his/her views in outrageous and outraged language, it is only towards the sharp end of the spectrum of the complaints that the third world is at last beginning to express. 1W has raped and pillaged 3W for centuries, that much is true, and without sanction until recently, sadly also true.

But 3W has attained a standard of educational qualification in the subject of FirstWorldSpeak and has now the sophistication not only to argue its case but also to develop the thinking to back it up and to change its position.

The developing weakness of the 1W economies has also changed the picture. Not only has 3W the mental equipment to evade further bullying by 1W, it has also now got more ammunition: more and more as the dollar goes down (and the euro and the others with it).

Somebody from the first world needs more humility when challenged by a third worlder.

            Not easy, but better.

            Please take note.

I have the utmost understanding for 3W countries / poeple to claim their rights. Really.
1W has put them in a bad position, I see that.

For my understanding this doesn’t give anyone who expects to be taken seriously the right to call others “brainless ass wipes”.

While the points zapped makes are real points, and the language used outrageous and outraged, the personal attacks may have crossed a line.

My self defence teacher said: if unfortunate to be mugged, then hand over as demanded. But if all handed over and still threatened, this is not the same game: not theft but power. After which, you are entitled:no, obliged, to play the bigger power hand.

Having given zapped the time of day, and having seen accessions from the other side, it may be time to call “power” to replace “justice” as might have been.

I would begin to come down on the side of the name of the game being timewasting, and without naming the NIDF directly we do know where timewasters come from.

Africa suffers injustices, yes, at hands of first world, yes.

What Africa has suffered mirrors events in Japan and probably from the same prime cause, the institutionalised greed of the first world financial community.

If we cannot respond to zapped in these terms, and/or if zapped cannot accept this, then we need maybe to recategorize the conversation?

I just spent 6 months in a non first world country. I am going back to live there.

Many people treated me with the utmost kindness and hospitality and made me feel less like a martian and more like a lost lamb returned to the fold.

Some people who knew nothing of me seemed resentful that I was sharing their space. Just something I was not quite prepared for but then resolved to live with.

Everyone has their anxieties, pressure, complaints. Not always or inevitably personal, but sometimes one can be in the wrong place.

First worlders have less of the anxiety – pressure – complaint than Third worlders.

It pays us, and pays them respect, to remember this.

            Peace!
