Here is an excerpt Debito Arudou‘s latest piece for the Japan Times:
“Regardless, the awful truth is: ‘We Japanese don’t lie. We just don’t tell the truth.’”
“This is not sustainable. Post-Fukushima Japan must realize that public acceptance of lying got us into this radioactive mess in the first place.”
“For radiation has no media cycle. It lingers and poisons the land and food chain. Statistics may be obfuscated or suppressed as usual. But radiation’s half-life is longer than the typical attention span or sustainable degree of public outrage.”
“As the public — possibly worldwide — sickens over time, the truth will leak out.”

what a great paragraph!! says it all! bleedin japan times, cool im a subscriber
“Again, uso mo hoben: As long as you accomplish your goals, lying is a means to an end. The incentives in Japan are clear. Few will tell the truth if they will be punished for doing so, moreover rarely punished for not doing so.”

Amazing logic by Arudou and finally the truth begins to peek out from under the red rising sun. Such honesty and when linked with bad news…travels swifter than the jetstream. Slowly and inexorably the mainstream news iron curtain is poised for breakouts from journalists looking to scoop the competitors.

“Many doubt government claims that radioactive rubble will not proliferate nationwide, fanning fears that the nuclear power industry is trying to make itself less culpable for concentrated radiation poisoning by irradiating everyone (see http://www.debito.org/?p=954!)!”
“Now we have documented proof that the Japanese government (the Environment Ministry, no less) is taking steps to pressure local governments nationwide into swallowing their fair share of the radiation. Why does this debris have to be carted around the country? Not only could it contaminate the entire nation, it will also shield the nuclear power industry from criticism and responsibility — as it will make it harder to link radiation to the cause of any future sickness or death if casualties are not limited to the Fukushima area.” http://www.debito.org/?p=9547
< <<<<<<<<<<<
Busby has also suggested this as a possible explanation for why they are transporting debris for incineration to places all over the island. I’m not doubting him on that, but I must admit that I really don’t understand how this strategy can work. Surely there is already data on cancer rates across Japan. If in the wake of Fukushima that rate suddenly increases noticeably across the entire country, I don’t see how that gets TEPCO off the hook. It seems to me that a post-Fuk increase all over Honshu just magnifies their liability–it would have been bad enough to do such harm in one prefecture, but if it can be shown that cancer rates increased in the wake of the accident across the entire island, that looks even worse for TEPCO–they’ve not only devastated the health of one prefecture’s population, they devastated that of an entire country (or at least its main island).
If that really is their agenda and such horrific statistics do come to pass, let’s hope that the strategy backfires on them and it is interpreted as I interpret it, magnifying–not obscuring–their liability and their shame.

That was interesting. I wonder what the normal number of cargo ships there usually are around Japan. (?)
I’m guessing here, but I’ll bet they’re shipping ‘hot’ stuff out as quickly as they can. (Maybe just dumping it in the waste can which they call the Pacific Ocean.)
It’s the same logic as someone who gets an STD and decides to give it to everyone else because someone gave it to them. Unthinkable, but it happens. Not a good principle, but a common/human one.

I appreciate what Arnie has contributed, and understand he has to be careful to maintain his credibility. But I was thinking that he (or any other expert) could get up and say that “his sense is this……you know suggest that although he doesn’t have irrefutable proof, he feels strongly that we can expect certain things to unfold. It is surely a nightmare for those in Japan. As i watch the talkdown, coverup, and almost total lack of proactive response with other plants of this or similiar design in quake zones.
The US could easily see 7-8+ ricter quakes this decade in the greater New Madrid seismic zone (Chicago-OKC) and that could lead to similiar meltdowns. No proactive response (unless you count studies) is underway though.

Nonsense from a poison pen
By OLAF KATHAUS
Sapporo
As much as I admire Debito Arudou for his efforts to point out flaws in the Japanese society and politics, he let himself get carried away this time.
First, the phrase “radiation poisoning” is usually reserved to the acute effects of ionizing radiation that usually manifest within days of exposure. None of this happened in Japan outside of the reactor.
His vision that the worldwide population will get sick because of Fukushima is utter nonsense. But his argument fail-proof: he claims that statistics about Fukushima effects will be obfuscated…READ MORE IN LINK

The truth about tatemae
By SCOTT HARDS
Nasu, Tochigi
Debito Arudou (“The costly fallout of tatemae and Japan’s culture of deceit,” Nov. 1) paints with indefensibly broad strokes, completely failing to establish how tatemae culture — essentially a social mechanism to prevent hurt feelings on the part of the listener — somehow translates into Japan being a vast sea of lies.
He trots out a number of recent news events and finds deceptions by their players, but this is something one could do easily with news stories from any country in the world. He demonstrates nothing uniquely Japanese or linked to tatemae.
Worse, he misrepresents some of the stories. At Olympus, Michael C. Woodford was indeed fired as CEO for being a “whistle blower” but the subsequent resignation (and probable indictment) of their top manager, not mentioned by Arudou, reveals that it’s the truth that is being valued more highly.
He also sees lies where there aren’t any; his radiation obsession clouds his understanding of Tepco’s “cover-up” of reactor meltdowns in Fukushima. It bears repeating that nuclear reactors don’t have “meltdown sensors” and even today, we don’t know for sure, empirically, that the fuel did melt since the reactor vessels cannot yet be safely opened yet. It’s simply an analysis of temperature and pressure data that has led to this openly disclosed conclusion.

“Standing at the edge of the 21st century, people of the world have a strong desire for more and more harmonious development of science technology and the importance of the academic research as a platform of science technology is snowballing. Our mission, as an affiliation to the university, is not only to promote original and creative researches for surpassing the international marks, but also to keep pioneering unknown regions of study. We, Research Institute for Electronic Science, Hokkaido University, are aiming to transcend the traditionally-systemized learning which has been predicated on physics, chemistry and mathematics and develop new electronic science fields obtaining aggressively the achievement from biological science.”

Over the last few weeks many independent reports have been released regarding the true levels of Fukushima contamination. These have come from independent scientists, citizen groups and European agencies. West Coast, Seattle, Boston hot spots: Cancer to dramatically increase yet public kept in dark
On Monday, it was confirmed that the major human right to health is being violated in the United States by the public not being advised that Fukushima hot particles contaminated the United States and that West Coast cancer are due to surge, based on scientific analysis by Scientist Marco Kaltofen of Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) of radioactive isotopic releases from Fukushima who presented his findings at the American Public Health Association (APHA) annual meeting in Washington DC as reported by nuclear expert Arnie Gundersen.

Author of the new book, “Nuclear Toxicity Syndrome,”Dr. Mark Sircus, on his “Wisdom and Warning” website, blog.imva.info, has referred to research and analysis of Dr. DeSante. (Also see: “Prestigious doctor: US nuclear ‘Baby valley of death,’ Millions to die (video),” Dupré, D.)
“In Nuclear Toxicity Syndrome are chapters talking about how the very young, those under one year old including unborn and newborn babies who seem to be dying at faster rates on both the east and west coasts of America—starting immediately after a radiation plume came across the Pacific soon after the nuclear catastrophe at Fukushima occurred,” states Dr. Sircus.
After Chernobyl’s radioactive cloud over the U.S. West Coast spring of 1986, Dr. DeSante’s research uncovered severe die-off of young birds. Later, researchers Gould and Goldman duplicated Dr. DeSante’s results using human mortality data from both U..S. and Germany. They found that the “young, the old, and those with weak immune systems were the main casualties.
