Title: Obsession with a safety myth
Source: The Japan Times
Author: Editorial Board
Date: July 26, 2012
[...]
A big question is whether the government and the power industry have really liberated themselves from the [nuclear safety] myth and have a humble attitude needed in handling nuclear technology.
[...]
both the regulators and the power industry have not paid serious attention to the fact that once a severe accident happens at a nuclear power plant, it causes irreparable damage
[...]
one wonders whether complex piping inside a nuclear power plant can remain undamaged when hit by a strong earthquake. The Diet-commissioned panel pointed out that when the piping suffers small fissures, measuring devices cannot detect water leaks
[...]
The government-commissioned panel on the other hand carried out all its hearings behind closed doors and the identity of most of those questioned is hidden in the report. This method apparently made its report somewhat fuzzy. There even is a view that the panel was rather “soft” on bureaucrats.
Many questions as to the causes of the nuclear accident and facts related to it remain unanswered. It is not yet known what parts of the plant were damaged and to what extent. The government and the Diet should launch further investigations. Establishing a permanent body should be considered.
Investigation reports by the Diet-commissioned panel, the government-commissioned panel, Tepco’s committee and a private sector committee contain many differences. At the very least, thorough studies should be made to ascertain the trustworthiness of various views and explanations.

Very ascerbic, Richard, and right on the mark.

I mean any harsh criticism of Tepco and the bureaucracy in Japan is warranted, IMHO.

So glad to see Japanese media questioning the status quo.
Is this meant to be taken as the official Editorial Board of the Japan Times published their united opinion?
All I can say is I agree so much, and yeesh, it's about time we were all apprised of the extent of the damage to all the nuclear power plants in Japan. We do need to be informed as to the nature of the accidents. The damage is not just limited to Fukushima Daichi.
Soft on bureaucrats? Humility needed on the part of the plant operators and everyone affiliated with them? Irreparable damage?
Yes, yes, and yes. Not only irreparable damage but incalculable damage. Hearts, minds, souls ravaged. This must stop.
Saikado hantai.

And Ohayo Gozaimasu to friends in Japan, and across the sea. Greetings, Richard, I'm just back from the veteranarian's office. (
I can't spell tonight.) My dog has hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, and I'm hoping and praying she'll make it through the night.
I may have to take leave of Enenews for awhile until she's on the mend. Reading so much unpleasant news here can be almost overwhelming at times, with everything else going on in one's personal life.
It is encouraging to see Japanese mainstream media publishing opinion questioning the nuclear power status quo. The honesty is like a breath of fresh air.

Your vivid situation made me think again about all the non-human victims of Fukushima.
See you soon (virtually), I hope. Hugs for your friend.

@arclight: had the Japanese not gone the nuclear route, they would've discovered – long-ago – that the answer to their nation's energy needs was right under their feet…

@arclight….After all this. After all that has happened, This government and the power company executives must all be complete and total without a trace of doubt, fools and idiots of the highest order, bent on a death wish for the entire planet…

Irreparable damage happens when a reactor melts, no matter the country.
Report Comment
"Whether or not the piping of a nuclear reactor will withstand an earthquake".
A. It ought to be obvious by the damage at Fukushima Npp… the piping is extremely vulnerable to damage.
B. This is one of many safety issues that shows clearly that nuclear power is unsafe.
Rational people must reject this mortal gamble.
SHUT THEM ALL DOWN

Hai! Saikado hantai!!!

Google News sees this Goverment Panel has come up with the same answer to all nuclear accidents.
It's only human error, Nuclear is not to blame (don't even blame earthquakes and Tsunami's).
It's HUMAN ERROR!
All better.
Build more nukes.

quantum dynamics is fuzzy, as is drip fed partial truth reporting.
8.9 quake along the coast and aftershocks more than Kobe? I think not.

"…one wonders whether complex piping inside a nuclear power plant can remain undamaged when hit by a strong earthquake."
What the writer should have written: "…we demand to know whether the makeshift plastic piping inside what is left of the Fukushima nuclear power plant can control the highly radioactive water flowing through them when they are hit by the next strong earthquake.
The journalists and mass media in general have failed us all on the Fukushima issue.
[ Cool Japan ?]
