Title: Crisis never came close to scenario meriting Tokyo evacuation: panel chief
Source: Japan Times Online
Author: REIJI YOSHIDA
Date: Feb 8, 2012

The Fukushima No. 1 plant worst-case fallout scenario drawn up by Japan Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Shunsuke Kondo last March 25 assumed winds would carry the radioactive materials to Tokyo, forcing the government to help people “migrate” from the capital. [...]

After Kondo’s report was submitted to Hosono, the government prepared remote-controlled concrete pump trucks with long arms that could directly inject coolant water into the spent fuel pools.

Nitrogen was injected into the stricken reactors’ containment vessels to prevent further hydrogen explosions, and massive amounts of slurry, a mixture of sand and water, have been prepared to contain radioactive materials as a last resort.

They should have prepared this right after 3.11 and used it on reactors 1-3. Mucking forons!

Japan Times: “Massive amounts of slurry, a mixture of sand and water, have been prepared to contain radioactive materials as a last resort”

Your headline is fuzzy: Was the material (slurry) made in March or has just been made?

Please watch your tenses (have been prepared versus was prepared) and the way you post headlines out of context so that you remain a serious site.

and massive amounts of slurry, a mixture of sand and water, have been prepared to contain radioactive materials as a last resort.

ENE News! Sorry for my last comment. The JAPAN TIMES actually uses the phrase”have been prepared to contain radioactive materials” which is a subtle slippery slope grammatical way to say “we may expect radioactive materials.” This grammatical shift is interesting because the Present Perfect tense “Have been prepared” elates NOT a finished past event but an ONGOING EVENT and possible “ast resort.”——————————————————————————–

Preparing slurry for a case of last resort…how much slurry? ..what are the conditions of last resort…
How much nitrogen?… what hydrogen explosions?…
Why bother? ..it’s in coldshut down..
    How much slurry ?
Think it’s going to work..up against the heat and interaction of radiation and concrete?
That brings to mind..anoher great idea ..TEPCO has…dumping concrete onto the waterline area of Fukushima…what EXACTLY is unset concrete supposed to do?
It has to be dry to set…!!
    Slurry…how much slurry?
Next they will be grouting the seafloor..like BP…lol

Slurry…. sand and water .why dont they just wait until the ocean meets the reactors…

  • Maybe part of the plan is to cement over the floor of the bay, and the continue on out into the ocean for about 40 miles around the plant, and then start on the whole Fuku Province land mass.

This would work to keep all radioactive materials buried.

And it would stimulate the economy, getting thousands of cement trucks dumping cement daily, all over the 1500 square kilometers of Fuku Province and the 1500 square kilometers of ocean outside Fuku..

Now, what about the radiation still coming out at the FUKU plant? It will settle ON TOP of the cement.

What about the radiation coming down the rivers? It will also settle ON TOP Of the cement…

This is the official “spent fuel pool emergency plan”. This would almost be useless for reactors 1-3 because the fuel from these in whatever shape they are in is buried deep beneath the buildings. If any of spent fuel pools collapse this is the only answer. In that situation no human will be able to stay anywhere on site and not receive a lethal dose of radiation very quickly. And if that is the case, all reactors and pools on site would be unmanned and uncontrolled, and in much worse condition than they are now.

If things come to this it’s a crap shoot whether it would work or not. Is the plan to shoot the slurry from the ground I think they are underestimating the dose rate potential within a close enough range. If the plan is to drop it by air it will of course be largely inefficient, and a number of the helicopter pilots at Chernobyl who dropped sand did not live very long.
