Rain likely to induce more radioactive leaks, NHK, May 28, 2011:

The operator of the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant says it is closely monitoring contaminated water levels in the facility as heavy rain is forecast next week. [...]

The company is concerned that contaminated water in the basement of reactor buildings and nearby tunnels may overflow and seep into the ground and the sea.

Rain is forecast on Sunday and Monday because of an approaching typhoon. [...]

Overflow my ass! This is a storyline for a further silent release of all the radioactive material that fills up their containers on this site – a chance to dump them and start anew.

My take on this is: “The wind has changed [we knew that but didn't want to panic you] and is going to blow the caesium over Tokyo [and maybe a bit further] and [as we haven't got the tent up in time] we thought we’d let you know [that it's not our fault] if we announce some more surprise contamination info a couple of months later”

      - oh and of course someone might already have read about the 300km stretch of contaminated seabed so maybe anyone reading about THAT might be persuaded to accept it’s the typhoon’s fault.

      haha, gotcha!

Why are they collecting H2O just to dump it again…seems like a waste of time to me. Tepco could spend a little money on a better way of collecting and holding all this radioactivity they are creating by trying to stop more radioactivity. If the radioactivity was a precious metal they wouldn’t let a gram slip threw their fingers….

Well, it is not raining very much yet. The typhoon will arrive on Monday. Still some time to prepare.

The site of the plant is still a mess so rain will not help, just transform it into a muddy mess…

But more, I mean significant, radioactive leaking is unlikely. The rain can only account for a small fraction of the water currently used to cool the reactors.

It will just make life for the engineers less “pleasant” if it ever was to start with!

does anyone know if the problem in Japan is intensifying the storms in the Northeastern USA? For the past few nights there were lightening storms like I have never seen. The explosions were so loud it sounded like bombs were falling in the mountains.

    • I think the radiation laden clouds are carrying an energetic charge aren’t they? Since the disaster I have noticed changes in general in the clouds, their formations, their actions and their appearance. The oddest thing here on west coast is the ongoing formation or appearance of hellacious thunderclouds which release no rain, thunder or lightening as they hang round and pass through all day. That is SO STRANGE for here where we get rain dumps a plenty with & without the giant storm clouds normally – it is just so weird that SUPER STORM CLOUDS here lately seem to travel eastward, without leaving a drop of weather in their wake. I think the same scary clouds I see here are releasing eastward with force. The silent dark ones here have yet to unleash significant rains DESPITE their presence which is a new thing IMO!

In my time in LA, it was rare that any rain was accompanied by thunder and lightning.

        Report Comment

        • I’m in BC, we get a lot more rain here than LA!!! My point about the big clouds is that black bottomed *thunderclouds* usually don’t station themselves silently all day. It has become the new normal lately in our horizon here.

          Report Comment

          • I’m seeing them too. I’m near Victoria, on Vancouver Island.

Black clouds that just hang around and dump very little rain. Never used to get those.

What makes clouds black? Cloud density? Cloud composition?

            Report Comment

          • Well, we do know that ionization affects clouds:

            GCR=Global Cosmic Rays

            Cloud effects
Changes in ionization affect the abundance of aerosols that serve as the nuclei of condensation for cloud formation.[44] As a result, ionization levels potentially affect levels of condensation, low clouds, relative humidity, and albedo due to clouds. Clouds formed from greater amounts of condensation nuclei are brighter, longer lived, and likely to produce less precipitation. Changes of 3–4% in cloudiness and concurrent changes in cloud top temperatures have been correlated to the 11 and 22 year solar (sunspot) cycles, with increased GCR levels during “antiparallel” cycles.[45] Global average cloud cover change has been found to be 1.5–2%. Several studies of GCR and cloud cover variations have found positive correlation at latitudes greater than 50° and negative correlation at lower latitudes.[44]

            Report Comment

          • PU239 – I am on the other end of the island! Thought it was my imagination but no, our clouds ARE different these days! It is at least a coincidence we have these new clouds on the scene right after the explosions and the heavy storms east of us all seem to bear relation to each other …

Of course, there are also the *new* black grey streak (cirrus) clouds in the night skies. They are actually very pretty, especially as they cover parts of the moon. Just a little unnerving as they suggest some sort of change is in play.

“it is just so weird that SUPER STORM CLOUDS here lately seem to travel eastward, without leaving a drop of weather in their wake.”

These super clouds are indeed building as they move eastward. All of the super cells/tornadoes in the Midwest and Southeast w/100s dead are proof that something bad is happening.

Question: Could all of the radiation in the atmosphere be causing such violent weather?

The most certain and long range problem for the existence of human beings on this planet is radioactive pollution since it will stick around for millenia. But please remember that we have already unleashed another disaster, climate change. The energies we are talking about in climate change dwarf that in all of the radiation stores we have. They are well capable of causing all kinds of havoc. The energies inherent within the radioactive releases are minor. They are absolutely lethal to life but they will not cause storms. Climate change does. Just as a taste please read the following.

      http://researchnews.osu.edu/archive/grnlndgrl.htm

The most immediate destruction we face is climate change. But we may survive that. Large scale nuclear contamination is an ELE.

And as a parting thought all our reactors are on coastlines. The ocean levels are going to rise and rise fairly rapidly now. I hope they have sense enough to start disassembling all nuclear reactors and storing the lethal fuel with more security.

But always remember that we have created two hells not one.

after Chernobyl, they used an anti-scattering agent called BURBA. it was a sticky substance which they dropped from helicopters all over the area to plaster the radioactive particles to the ground.

probably tepco is doing the same thing.

some radioactive particles will adhere to this stuff, but not a big noticeable percentage. maybe it’ll catch the particle otherwise destined for your lung. (i hope so)

Yesterday, the 27th of May, 2011 Mr. Edano gave two press conferences.

In one he laid down the hammer on Tepco demanding info that has been witheld, both from the govt and the public. He is clearly seeing the coming storm about cover-ups. He said, “do not wihthold any more info” refering to new measured readings that have surfaced lately.

What was of concern was in the second press conference Mr. Edano said that Tepco’s Hosano told him something an hour before the press conference and he could not say what that was until he talked to the Prime Minister Kan. He said that Tepco would be announcing it in a press conference later in the day(27th). He hurriedly left after it was finished. Nothing new has come yet from any govt press conferences.

Today’s Tepco report is saying things that should have already been said.

Here is Tepcos latest report as well as admittion that there was an explosion in Reactor number one, three, and four.

Not excused from the liabilities of it, but we are entrusitng a coporation to put people ahead of its profits which is foolhardy. A well run nucleaqr operation demonstrates a disaster preparedness ability to meet and exceed what is needed to manage all aspects of their operation; espeically when things go sideways. In this case, TEPCO shows they are NOT capable of running their plants safely so the idea of putting the health and safety of the citizens in their hands is DEEPLY IRRESPONSIBLE at this stage of the game. It is a hollow effort for their government to publicly slam TEPCO for being untrustworthy and in the next breath hold them accountable for the safety of the citizens…. what a world we have created.

Would rain storm/ typhoon bring radiation in air down on ground? Instead of radiation blowing to West coast US, rain and changing wind direction will deposit more radiation on Japan Islands. Sucks for Japanese people but maybe better for us on West Coast?

Feel sorry for Japanese people but ultimately for me personally better them then me. However USA residents can’t be too smug they have similar old school nuke plants situated on fault lines and us Canadians sell nuclear technology and uranium maybe the uranium used in Fukushima. We are all complicit in this disaster in some way.

In Vancouver where I live they used to have signs up at city limits “Vancouver a nuclear free zone” but they quietly took those signs down. Uranium is shipped out of Vancouver ports and mined in our province. The only reason we don’t have nukes is because of our mountain rivers allowing us to utilize hydro electric.

Feel so sad that while we all were busy with whatever lifestyle choices we enjoy the IDIOTS have been building silent death.

Still think some kind of boycott against Japan would be good or something to fight back. If we spend more time directing our combined energies towards those in charge, than posting about frustrations on Internet forums, it stands to reason we’d see more action.
