Title: What Happened to Chernobyl Children 7 Years after the Accident (from a Japanese TV program in 1993)

Description: This video is from a Japanese evening news program broadcasted on Nihon TV, seven years after the Chernobyl accident (around 1993). I hope the families in Fukushima who still hesitate to voluntarily evacuate their children will watch this and change their minds.

Transcript Excerpts

Host: Yesterday, we reported that the truth of the terrible radiation damages had been revealed for the first time through the patients’ charts of the victims made right after the Chernobyl accident. [...]

Mr. Ryuichi Hirokawa, a photo journalist: Well, I went there to see with my own eyes what actually happens to the health of the residents. Above all, please take a look at what’s happening to children now. It’s been 7 years since the accident. [...]

However, truly terrible things emerged several years after the accident. [...]

Radioactive materials have now accumulated up to 20 centimeters below the soil surface and are slowly going downward. [...]

Radioactive materials that have accumulated 20 centimeters below the soil surface are absorbed through the roots of the plants and accumulated in the bodies of humans and animals.

Minsk Center for Pediatric Blood Diseases

Incubation period of radiation damages is ending, and they have started to attack people in forms of leukemia and thyroid cancer [...]

I visited this hospital last year, too, and filmed the inpatient children. [...]

But this time, I wasn’t able to see any of them. Most of them have passed away.

There are many stages in the treatment of leukemia. [...]

Hoiniki Central Hospital

Dr. Korzov, Vice Chief, Hoiniki Central Hospital: “In 5 to 8 years of the accident, there’s an increase in thyroid cancer, then breast cancer will follow, and then bone cancer. This is how an increase in cancer will occur. We are in the stage of increase in thyroid cancer.” [...]

Thyroid Cancer

In the world of medicine, thyroid cancer is supposed to be an adult disease.

The rate of children getting it is said to be one in 500,000.

However, in the areas around Chernobyl, there has been an explosive increase in pediatric thyroid cancer since 4 years after the accident. [...]

In Hoiniki District, located [70km] north of the Chernobyl plant, 27 out of 352 children have been diagnosed as needing attention. 20 percent of them are likely to get thyroid cancer, which is 7,800 times more than the average incidence rate.

Dr. Drozd, Institute of Radiology: “The health condition of children is affected by radiation.”

“It’s obvious if you look at the distribution map of radioactive iodine.”

IAEA Exposed

Three years ago, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)’s research mission visited the contaminated areas. Dr. Shigematsu [Japanese], chairman of the mission, announced “there are no health damages among the residents.” [...]

Mr. Hirokawa, after looking at your video, I wonder what it was that IAEA announced there were no health damages among the residents. [...]

The local people believed a fair research would be done, because IAEA is an agency of the United Nations and a medical scientist from Hiroshima would lead the research. So, they were astounded that the mission had announced the areas were safe.

But, didn’t the mission actually see the situation there?

Well, according to the local doctors, the mission members didn’t enter the heavily-contaminated areas.

Besides, they brought their food, sourced from far away, and didn’t eat anything local.

Still, they declared it’s safe. No wonder the local people are infuriated.

If the mission found local food too dangerous to eat, they should have said it’s dangerous.

The very credibility of the International Atomic Energy Agency is seriously challenged, isn’t it?

Yes. I hear that when the nuclear industry of the former USSR started to do business with the nuclear industry of the US,

They probably agreed that downplaying the damages by the accident would be beneficial for both sides.

That is an incredible powerful post, thank you for putting it here Admin.
As it’s a japanese program, hopefully many Japanese visiting here will see it and draw their conclusions.
Those poor children – their looks into the camera…sooo desperate. They all deserved to grow up happily.
It makes me so furious. Let’s never stop the fight, please.

The respiratory problems is most likely due to the xenon release, which was far greater than Chernobyl’s. Xenon collects in the lungs, then degrades into cesium after a short half life (2 to 5 days). Bronchitis, pneumonia, asthma, and other respiratory infections form quickly. After a few years, lung cancer becomes obvious.

This are 5,4 Kids (Five point Four),
sound much less than 7.800% increase of Cancer!

    But this Cancer is horrible,
no question- 5,4 Kids or 5.400,
    every case is dramatic!

Indeed – every case is dramatic. Especially as they all could have so simply been avoided if the adults (governement) would have only taken care. All those children could be alive today.
It breaks my heart to imagine just ONE japanese child suffering because its parents think this is “baseless rumour” and don’t want neighbours to think they are “overly sensitive”.

And please take into consideration that this is the result for only one district 70 km away from the plant. There are thousands of other children not being noticed in this report.

You are right but my point was that a medical Statistic is not really expressive for a Message!

But also face the Facts, there are Millions of Non-Japanese Kids who die every Week by all types of Diseases we can easily fight, think about AIDS, Malaria, other Waterborne Diseases, Diarrhea, etc.

        There are so many,
to think about this Kids in F`Shima is kind of a Luxury Dis-Behavior of a rich Aunty who do not know what she can do in Christmas Time!

Do not forget this Kids in the World where a change is easy reachable!!!

PS; i know you are on the good side but don:t get
        fixed on the F`Shima Problem!

I know Human, there are so many problems in this world it’s impossible to be “fixed on Fuku”. But as this board is about the Fuku disaster, I think I’ll afford the luxurious dis-behaviour of thinking about the Fukushima children.

I know we’re on the same side. Peace.

hi human gotta say im surprised that you tie in the plight of other children to those of the children of fukushima, it is a seperate issue.. in my research, i have found that many international childrens charities have not been informed of the problems facing the children of fukushima and so they are carrying on their battles against child injustice in other parts of the world and have no idea of this situation… living in europe with a scandanavian ex wife.. we wonder if the gross deformity child and adhd children might not be as a result of contamination from chernobyl.. the earliest child has had various physical problems to overcome.. but there is NO PROOF!, and in the sixty years of nuclear, oxford university only begins its “tissue bank” in 1998 excluding belarus!! according to proffessor thomas!!… i think that stsatistics are a poor way of looking at this situation cos you will miss too much!!
          just my opinion

oh and i have many polish friends who have adhd or ocd, strange! they think chernobyl too!! but theres NO PROOF! :)

“Violation of the Human Rights of the Children of Fukushima”
          http://www.greenaction-japan.org/internal/110817_Fukushima_human_rights_UN_submission.pdf
Fukushima Prefecture did answer the parents’ demand that school grounds be measured for radioactive contamination, undertaking a survey on 5th~7th April which covered the 1,638 schools in the prefecture. The result showed that 76% of Fukushima prefecture schools had levels of contamination exceeding what triggers designation of a workplace as
“radiation-controlled” (0.6 microsievert per hour) where individuals under 18 are not legally permitted to enter. At over 20% of the schools even higher radiation levels were recorded, levels warranting “individual exposure control” if occurring in a workplace.”

            @arclight,
the Children of Fukushima are the Children of this Planet like the Children in India, in Africa or in Falluja!
            (all are smelly)

For example the Radiation now coming down from Tora Bora in the Himalaya will be much more deadly than this Stuff we have here.
And all Rivers are made up there, the Indus, the Ganges and the Mekong!
            for Research; http://www.ratical.org/radiation/DU/

This are over 1 Billion People who get radiated Water in the future, made by Uranium-239!

We need to stop all forms of Non-Natural Radiation with exception of medical Instruments!

We need to stop all forms of Non-Natural Radiation with exception of medical Instruments!

not sure about the medical uses either.. they need a reactor! and i dont believe that we need that.. we can develop non nuclear alternatives.. we have the technology!! this will be the big debate when nuclear is cancelled and the research aspects! but we have to change direction with our technologies i believe or no change!

your point about tora bora and other battle sites is worth making, but 23 percent of arable land is now useless, this does not include irradiated lands such as tora bora, chernobyl, bikini kazahkstan (huge)etc for some reason…

        So true…

The district had a population of 45,900 people in 1986 before the Chernobyl disaster. Certainly more than 352 were children.

        http://www.khoiniki.gomel-region.by/en/region/history

“Twenty years since the catastrophe the population of the region has halved as more than 20 thousand people were resettled from the areas most contaminated with radionuclides. Forty-nine villages out of 99 ceased to exist as well several educational establishments and 6 rural councils.

About 88 thousand hectares of lands were removed from agricultural use, including 34 thousand hectares of arable lands”

Actually, it would be 780,000%… the Japanese report said 7,800 times, not a percentage.

Also just to make sure we are all using the same figures, the report appears to be saying:

      1) 27 out of 352 children in the town needed attention, or 7.6%.

      2) Of those 27 who needed attention, 20% are likely to get thyroid cancer, which is statistically 5.4 children out of 352 or 1.534%.

      3) If that is 7,800 times above average for childhood thyroid cancer, the average must be 0.0001967%.

From around .0002% to over 1.5%.

What country are you living in Human? Japan?

I am sure the well researched folks here know that the “UNITED NATIONS” is not a democratic institution at all. It is nothing but a ZIONIST front organisation of UNELECTED marxist psychopaths hell bent on controlling the world, and of course KILLING OFF the people they don’t want. All these nuclear catastrophes are textbook AGENDA 21. The unimaginable bastard lunatics behind all this are happy that little people are dying. Don’t ever hold your breath waiting for anything associated with the UN to tell you the truth or act in your interests. Won’t happen. Remember the bird flu pandemic? All those vaccines being shoved at you? They will do or say ANYTHING to carry out their agenda, which is to kill off as many sheeple as they can.
I fully expect the world health oranisation will be giving anne coulter some kind of peace prize for her “radiation is good for you” crap.

re:” you see i think that unicef havent been told”

I think saying people in positions that could help “haven’t been told” let’s them off the hook far too easily. It makes it sound as if those people are simply passive, helpless victims of ignorance incapable of exercising any independent agency. Anybody working with the UN, in particular, is undoubtedly privy to more information than most of us are. We “hadn’t been told” either if “not being told” means not being spoon-fed information by the mainstream media (squeezed in-between its coverage of Michael Jackson’s doctor and Herman Cain’s harassment allegations).

The major media outlets haven’t informed us about events in Japan since March, but we had enough common sense to know that the situation didn’t suddenly end after a week in the headlines, so we took the initiative to seek out information sources that have continued to cover it. If people with organizations like the UN, who are in positions where they could make a difference on this issue, “haven’t been told,” it’s because they didn’t care enough to seek out the information that is available on sites like this. They are not simply helpless victims of an ignorance imposed upon them by the mainstream media. Their ignorance is at least partially self-imposed; it is the ignorance that results from willfully turning their heads in the opposite direction.

The UN doesn’t care about Fukushima. As the woman on the video last night said, the WHO has abdicated its responsibility on all matters regarding radiation’s health impacts. They have “washed their hands” of the matter, as if handing jurisdiction over to a body that they know has every interest in covering up such tragedies could really resolve them of the moral responsibility to do something

No doubt UNICEF has also consciously turned a blind eye to this tragedy. Contrary to popular myth, the UN is not composed of high-minded idealists; there is a great deal of power and money behind the actions—and the willful inaction—of that organization.

If they’re going to kill off most of the populace they should at least use a method that doesn’t directly affect them… and they’re children… and they’re children…
