Title: Japan Nuclear Plant’s Battle to Contain Radioactive Water
Source: Wall St Journal
Authors: MARI IWATA and PHRED DVORAK
Date: August 6, 2013

[...] Tepco’s water-control measures, such as pumping out contaminated water and putting it in storage, are “merely a temporary solution,” said Shunichi Tanaka, chairman of Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority, at a news conference last week. Eventually, “it will be necessary to discharge water” that’s still contaminated into the sea, he said. [...]

Some 400 metric tons of water a day is still being used to cool the melted fuel cores—though much of that water is now recycled. More troubling is another 400 tons a day of groundwater that flows down from hills and mountains into the compound, and toward the sea. [...]

Now, Tepco is planning to pump out some of the water that’s built up behind the [underground] barrier, and store it as well. [...]

Mr. Tanaka, the nuclear regulatory chairman, has said that Tepco should admit it’ll never be able to handle all the inflow of water, and start arranging for the release of contaminated water into the ocean, as long as it’s under allowable limits for radioactivity. [...]

It goes everywhere, air, water, crops …radiation everywhere.

So where is the superfund ? Like BP in the gulf, Japan should be pressed by the eco left for a resolution fund in the trillions. The left went after BP like radioactive piranha to extract the the appropriate "pound of flesh", but I don't see any of that…

Hello again Teddi … we understand that the left is useless and the right must be also … not much action from anyone between the left and right either … got any ideas who should respond to this mess that will get results ? … $$POD$$

You've been missing my point which is – where is that gaggle of leftist econ "planet savers" that has been funneled hundreds of billions over the last decade plus because of AGW – where are they now ?

If they would jumped on this with full force like they did BP in the gulf, you would have gotten the attention you seek and hopefully that much attention begets solutions.

Teddi, NO ONE "extracted a pound of flesh" from BP. Those world-class criminals got off very light and they still thrive while the Gulf is DYING. They drilled a hole into the seabed! Still gushing to this day, and tomorrow and tomorrow after that…

Honestly, I think that the left is still reeling because Obama as "hope" turned out to be a corporate puppet and a sham. Now he is sending Caroline Kennedy as Ambassador to Japan! That's the thanks the Kennedy family got for their support? Go nuke someone else's First Daughter? We voted for Obama, but are now sickened by the sight of him. And his Secretaries are a fascist nightmare. It's not that individual activists don't care — they do – but the left has been demoralized into paralysis.

Tepco and tptb are in desperation mode. Considering what actions will make people feel warm a fuzzy no longer happening. Survival behavior has replaced routine behavior. Caveman level thinking is here…fire hot, food good, etc. etc. etc.

With ENENews, I'm like an onlooker at a horrific car crash… I don't want to look, I don't want to know what happened… But still I look, still I want to know what's happening. I can't stop myself.

You forgot…radiation good..look at the Japanese spa businesses offering 'baths'. Gads, the behavior is crazy..not even Caveman level. Cavemen, or some of them, survived or their offspring did..humans. Dont expect the current behavior of supporting low level exposure to radiation to lead to healthy offspring in Japan or in other areas of the world with exposure. Can you say..EVERYONE? Survival of the fittest radiation victims I guess.

I have always had a thing for Japanese women – I better find one now, because finding a non mutated one will become a rare delicacy very soon. Just sayin.

No, no, no, that water needs to flood JAPAN, not the Pacific Ocean!! But they want to SAVE Japan? Those greedy psychopaths have already KILLED Japan. Killed off their own country. Not the thing is to try and NOT KILL THE WHOLE REST OF THE WORLD.

Start evacuating now to somewhere, anywhere, then let the poisoned Japanese water flood JAPAN!!

I feel so very sorry for the people there! But their lives in Japan are over ANYWAY. So finally do the humane evacuation that should have been done in the first place. Then let Japan drown and sink.

I'm not an engineer — I don't even know if something about this will make it WORSE. The coriums keep fissioning so radiation keeps pouring into the ocean ANYWAY! But even they don't seem to have a clue how stop that from happening from beneath the surface of the earth.

I just cannot see anything worse than KILLING OFF THE WHOLE REST OF THE WORLD! So YES, sacrifice Japan if it will help.

They "have to" dump hundreds of poisonous tons of water into the ocean every day? No. They DON'T have to. Just because they have crapped IN THEIR OWN pond, gives them no right to crap in the WORLD'S waters. Just backwater it into JAPAN. Evacuate the people there and keep that crap in your own pond!!!

Hopefully, the world will chip in to build a fleet of construction vehicles, robots and safety wear to fight this horror… And supply trained workers to do "what can be done" to lessen the effects of the FUFU situation..

We can hope… But, I'm afraid that this media spotlight will not last long and FUFU will go back to being ignored…

    If they do this..

I hope they fill it up to the neck of every microhole first with
maximum resistent-glue-concrete component so there is a
    time-release of the
    radioactivity in the
    ocean. Buy's us another day..

And all the break-off melting-holes point that come free , might need some plugging too before the ocean gulps in..even if its onnly for seconds , all of humankind honest siencetist's needs to think about that first before going "gong hu" about the next eventual cluster of disasters in the making. Create that Sooo needed global Think-Thank already pretty please..

Those we have are not working..
    imho

But on the other hand , since "just drop it afterwards" was the
mentality when the npp technology pact was made iirc , maybe its
design will turn out extremely functional for it , and the
occuring radioactif tsunami coöperatif on a leash..smiling no doubt..
or build a bassin first ? To contain the tsunami that is ..
The nuclear industry has some explaining to do about the cost …

The Real Bill of "too CheaT to meter" ! Globally !

Its time to drop the masking act around our realities and just

    face it.. Together !

The structure of our economic ambitions and activities needs to be rebuild from
    scratch ,
Economy and Ecology needs to become one and the same in

Our collectif conscience and in Our Reality ..

When the planet and therefore we are safed and healing we can
set new ambitions , but now its
    SURVIVING…

We need a worldwide consortium made up of experts in the field to start brainstorming solutions to what is happening in Fukushima and what can be done to FIX it. We need them NOW. Each country will also need to commit funds to this effort, since it is and will continue to affect the entire planet. The consequences could be the extinction of all life on earth. It is past time to do this. Japan is calling for help and they can not handle it alone.
