Local Red Cross officials say there is so far no information on any effects of the radiation, such as have been seen in the areas affected by the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, which include immune system problems and listlessness among children.

A year and a half have passed since the magnitude 9.0 earthquake and massive tsunami devastated the Tohoku region’s coast and led to the triple-meltdown crisis at Tokyo Electric Power Co.’s Fukushima No. 1 power plant.

Many children have developed a fear of water and appear weak and prone to sickness. And in Fukushima, fears of radiation among adults appear to have had an impact on children.

Yuji Tsutsui, 47, a professor of experimental psychology at Fukushima University, said many 3-year-old children studied in areas with high radiation levels are displaying spoiled attitudes and clinging behavior toward their parents.

  • AFTERSHOCK AFTERSHOCK

Doctor Yuji Tsutsui observes that "…children studied in areas with high radiation levels are displaying spoiled attitudes and clinging behavior toward their parents." This is the professional conclusion of a "professor of experimental psychology"? These families are languishing in regions with high radiation levels and this man can only point to petulant and clinging behavior of these children? I'm not sure who's more pathetic. The innocent victims who've been abandoned by the government of Japan or this so-called man of science…

There was a recent government sponsored symposium held in Japan to address the continued rise in public worry over radiation, seeing fear, rather than radiation exposure, as the primary threat. We shall expect to see many more such "learned opinions" making their way into the the media for a while. It is the mainstream response to the public attention that the protests and the local civic actions are receiving. The strategy to minimize public fears over the radiation fall out by portraying concerned people as emotionally unbalanced worked after Nagasaki and Hiroshima and the hope must surely be that it will work again with Fukushima.

Expect more blatant and subtle "medicalising" of normal, appropriate, human emotional and psychological states.

(I forget the coined word in use for this, sorry.)

You don't have to look far to see it extending beyond "radiophobia" to everyday situations.
    It serves many agendas.

    Diminish victims and victim concerns.
Transfer blame. To victims/associates, (or competing agents).
Hide what is physical, attributing it to what is mental.
    Promote dependency, not individual empowerment.
Promote inappropriate individual response; the illusion of choice masking dependency on outside agents/experts/ or state/corporate structures.
Promote fear – of being considered weak/abnormal/different coupled with stigmatizing weak/abnormal/different.
Promote self doubt; helplessness confronted with ones' own normal and appropriate responses.
Promote acceptance of exterior agents defining what are appropriate individual states of being.

The particular agents in these articles may not be consciously following a playbook as much as revealing they are attitudinally compromised/complicit/tools. Tip of the iceberg.

We all are now Winston Smith
and the world is Room 101,
if we don't want the boot on our faces forever
we'll have to change how the world is run.

That's some epic quoteage right there. Yes it is those spoiled children who are responding inappropriately to their dire straits.
