Title: Active faults may force Tsuruga atomic plant to be ‘disqualified’
Source: Kyodo
Date: Apr 25, 2012
The Tsuruga nuclear plant of Japan Atomic Power Co. in Fukui Prefecture could be “disqualified” as a fault running under it and soft earth layers may have moved together in the distant past, nuclear power regulatory agency officials said Tuesday. It is unusual for government officials to point out the possibility that a nuclear power plant is faced with such a fundamental problem. The state does not allow a reactor building or other key nuclear facilities on an active fault or a fault that could move along with it.
If the risk that it could move along with an active fault is confirmed, the two-reactor Tsuruga plant could be decommissioned. [...]
Errors?
Researchers on active faults have long pointed out the danger the fractured zones and the Urazoko Fault could pose but Japan Atomic Power said when it applied for building two more reactors in 2004 that Urazoko is not an active fault.Urazoko was confirmed an active after Takashi Nakata, professor emeritus at Hiroshima University, and others pointed out in 2008 errors in Japan Atomic Power’s research.

Title: Tsuruga reactor may be sitting above active fault
Source: NHK
Date: Wednesday, April 25, 2012 06:14 +0900 (JST)
[Tsuruga nuclear plant on the Sea of Japan coast in Fukui Prefecture] will undergo fresh inspections after experts warned that active faults may exist below the plant. [...]Earlier in the day, a team of experts surveyed 3 faults in the compound and found that one of them located 150 meters west of the No.2 reactor may be active.
The team said the fault could shift simultaneously with a known active fault nearby. If that happens, they could trigger an earthquake more powerful than the plant is supposed to withstand. [...]

Amazing foresight these nuclear engineers have…

Its a leaky new cage…..but funny, in a laugh or cry kind of way

Kind of makes me wonder what is their agenda to be cherry picking decommissions? Bring proactive has not been their style.

Japan in general was not, and is not, geologically suitable as a location for a NPP.

They're probably all off for good ..once they get through the summer, bye bye nuclear power plants.

Why don't we hear of reports of Japan "racing" to re-stock their lost capacity with renewables?
Report Comment
Right, only minor talk of that.
Report Comment
Because people have not figured out what is going on here. I would say at most 10 percent get it. Japan's culture dictate they deny and hide uncomfortable things. Thus, the majority just wants to forget. The US did absolutely no homework when they sold Japan on nuclear.
Report Comment
There are efforts being made, and a rate tariff was just set for solar power. But first, Japan needs to bust the monopoly system the utilities have, implement a sharable grid, separate generation and transmission, and offer subsidies for renewables. Then you'll see a race to replace the nuclear generation with non-carbon farms and individual installations.
The whole system in Japan is more about making a select few stockholders rich than treating the populace properly.

Hello to all
my last years findings for australiancannonball:

A pdf-file with numerous maps to get a quick impression:
Overview of Active Fault Research at Geological Survey of Japan (2006)

AFRC Website with an "Active Fault Database":

there you can find an interactive faults-map:

Thanks, reVivre. I've been playing around with the interactive faults map. It's really good.

The Seamless Geological Map is fascinating also. I zoomed in on the DaiIchi plant area and expanded the line legend. That made Minamisoma look like a place to stay away from!
I don't yet understand what the contour lines are telling me – the unit of measurement. Can the DaiIchi plant really be just 6 meters above sea level? Can huge areas of land near it be just 1 meter above sea level?
There is some Japanese writing along many of the roads, but I can't read it – I assume it's just road names.
Great find – thanks again for the links.

reVivre:
. Nice! ALL Japanese nukes are near fault lines. Shut them all down forever now. Where will you put the spent fuel rods forever? Do you have a place that ISN'T geologically active?
Report Comment
because they have to burn their fortune on imported coal and oil to have energy. nothing left for solar cells, maybe.
Report Comment
I dont think thats it, for the reason why we dont hear about a mad rush to solar in Japan.
Report Comment
Why are they reporting this so formally? There should be a mass movement to shut down all nuclear power plants without even going beyond the obvious dangers of Fukushima. It's amazing that new reasons need to be thought of to 'decommission' them. End them because they're insanely evil you bastards.

Good. I empathise with the people of Japan. The government and energy monopolies should be brought up on charges.
