Gov’t tells TEPCO to prepare repair plan for Fukushima Daini equipment, Kyodo, January 12, 2012 [Emphasis Added]:

The Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency told Tokyo Electric Power Co. on Wednesday to prepare a report by the end of January on how to repair equipment at its Fukushima Daini nuclear power plant damaged by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami, a senior agency official said.

Daini in a ‘State of Cold Shutdown’? ‘A condition in which the bottom part of a reactor pressure vessel is kept below 100 C’? Sound familiar: Mainichi: Gov't claim of cold shutdown conditions is "meaningless" -- Like when Japan Army's retreat in WWII was called a 'shift in position'

The report is needed to “further ensure” the plant will remain in a stable state of cold shutdown, Kenji Matsuoka, chief of the disaster prevention section at the agency, said at a press conference [...]

A cold shutdown is defined as a condition in which the bottom part of a reactor pressure vessel is kept below 100 C and exposure from the release of radioactive substances is being significantly contained.

How Much is Daini Damaged?

The Fukushima Daini nuclear power plant was not so fatally damaged as the nearby Fukushima Daiichi plant by the magnitude-9.0 earthquake and subsequent tsunami.

In December, the government lifted its declaration of a state of emergency at the Fukushima Daini plant.

But facilities at the plant, including the emergency power generator and the cooling system for spent nuclear fuel pools, have been damaged, according to the agency.

We know Daini was smoking in March. Do we know WHY it was smoking?

Such as color or size of the smoke is unknown. However, after the smoke has not occurred.

      • I heard a rumor; The reactor was smoking because the company was trying out some tobacco products and how it would reduce the radioactivity in tobacco products by soaking up ‘excess’ radiation from reactor…

Then they decided to quit the experiment. The tobacco was getting soggy.

The crane operator was exposed to too much of this tobacco smoke, after they pulled it out of the reactor. He expired.

If you do not believe this, there is hope…lol

  • That means only about 10% of the nuke plants are still operating in Japan. Since local governments have to approve a restart, and most are opposed to this, odds are that these plants will not be able to restart.

This is news that has to be searched for… Another one that the mass media is NOT REPORTING…

I wonder why? Could it be that the nuke industry companies like GE, that also own the mass media, do not ‘like’ this news, so it never sees the light of their cameras or journalists?

    RE: Cold Shutdown:
It is a misuse of the term to describe a reactor after meltdown as ‘in cold shutdown’. As the fuel assembly is destroyed no shutdown is possible. Fuel is melted together and impossible to control directly. Even if pressure and temperature are unalarming momentarily ‘cold shutdown’ implies complete control which is impossible after meltdown.

Why can’t the Nuclear Industry accept that a melted down reactor is not a normal condition for a reactor which is shut down for any number of reasons and is ABLE TO BE STARTED UP AGAIN SAFELY!
This is a perfect example of Nuclear Oriented Bad Science (N☢ BS) being used to provide dis-information to the public and only serves to call into question those in the Industry that should be speaking out against this Nuclear Baloney (NB)!

Why does TEPCO and the Japanese Gov’t want to declare it’s Fukushima disaster Stable and more importantly, what do they hope to accomplish by doing it now; Is it a trail balloon?

    A. If the people “swallow” this Nuclear Baloney (NB) then TEPCO and their other Gov’t Leaders get to keep their jobs and march onward toward a nuclear future while the Nuclear refugees are “encouraged” to return to their Fukushima homes; letting history be the judge of whether or not this was the RIGHT decision.

    B. The people of Japan reject the concept of a “cold shut down” in which case TEPCO, in time, gets nationalized and Japan develops a 20 year plan to replace it’s reactors with solar of all flavors!

    C. The people of Japan are insulted by what TEPCO and their Gov’t is saying and take to the streets to DEMAND immediate change. TEPCO and their Government overseers are both swept away in order to placate the people of Japan. The Nuclear Refugees get settlements and the area around Fukushima is closed to all but scientific personal for the foreseeable future. Japan’s PM pledges to “race” Germany toward New Japanese developed Solar and being Nuclear within FIVE years…

The Japanese people are now at a cross roads that will define both their future, their children’s future and possibly the future of Nuclear Power on Earth!

    What will they now do:
    …Bow to TEPCO?
…Accept their Leaders vow to do better?
…Or Demand much less Nuclear ASAP?

    This is a decision that only the Japanese People can make;
… I hope they make US proud of them!

i thought I saw something that TEPCO had writen off Daini, months ago.

I thought that they managed to keep one EDG running at Daini, and kept the plant out of SBO, but they had major cooling system damage, had been running the RCICs and had overheat there.

TEPCO/JNES stopped putting out DAINI info a long time back but the plant had been reasonably mangled.

TEPCO denies reports to decommission Fukushima Diechi Units 5 and 6

“Fukushima prefecture called for the decommissioning of all six reactors at Dai-Ichi and the four reactors at the Fukushima Dai-Ni station, located about 10 kilometers (6 miles) to the south of the other plant.

“Tepco hasn’t decided yet whether to decommission the remaining two reactors at Dai-Ichi and the units at Dai-Ni, said Hosoda, declining to comment further….”
