Just to prove my point, as illustrated by SgtMAD,
The crane in the “falling” video stops moving at 2011-9-21 14:27:47
Even tho the web cam stream is not working, RIGHT NOW, the link provided by SgtMAD shows a screen shot of the crane back in action, at least standing up again, at 2011-9-22 11:09:12

      Seems air tight to me…

I have 30 years of experience in heavy construction and I can tell you that the crane was folded up and lowered to the ground to avoid the high winds that would have flipped the crane if left extended

if you check this live picture of the reactors you can clearly see all the cranes back up and working today.

if you look at any of those cranes, you will notice about half way up the boomyou will see where the cables are running over the back of the crane away from the boom itself, the crane bends right there and can be easily lowered to the ground.

I have worked on just about every major hotel built in Vegas for the last 20 years and have worked around these cranes quite a bit, before that I worked on oil rigs in wyoming, where we also used quite a few cranes to set up drill rigs and work in refineries.

That’s funny, cause for a time lapse video that crane must be falling in super slow motion.
I say this video has been misinterpreted for the headlines of this story.
I believe they slowly lowered and folded up the cranes also.

IT”S TIME LAPSE PEOPLE!! THINGS DON”T FALL DOWN THAT SLOWLY!!

Also they moved another crane in the lower left area of the video.

      Report Comment

      • Kevin Kevin

There are a bunch of odd things about the video. You point out the obvious notion that nothing falls that slow. I agree. However what is less obvious is when you look closely at the foreground the wind moves the greenery and it is clearly SPED UP. But at odd times during the clip that would suggest time lapse is not the reason.

It could easily be a situation where the film has been tampered with.

In the end the way the crane is up ended with with what looks like its footings still properly outstretched gives the impression that it is certainly not a business as usual folding up of a crane.

There is undoubtedly storm conditions and it appears as if the hook or whatever the tool is at the business end of the crane is not wound back up which would also suggest that it was in working mode when it tipped versus a normal taking down or folding up of the crane.

    • odiez1 odiez1

Also the headline photos have been enlarged to zoom in on the crane, they are misleading in that way..
I think speculation on the web cam video should be labeled as such.
That crane moved slowly under it’s own power. If it really did fall over it would have jumped from standing to fallen, but IT DIDN”T DO THAT.

I’m no shill, I call it like I see it.

Unfortunately, it wouldn’t be over and done with but much worse. The naivete about nuclear effects is amazing. The problems were caused by MOX fuel and perhaps nuclear weapons plants hidden in 2 or 3 of the reactors. So we may have already had 3 nuclear explosions. And that didn’t end the problems…….

Crane speculation: fell or was folded?

I’m on a phone so my viewpoint is as such…

My take: it took 11 minutes from start to finish for thd crane to fall or fold. So what do I think ( fall or fold?) Depends on what you define as fold for one thing… Do you mean it folded itself or operators did it?

If the operators were out in those winds folding down a crane then they are so dam good they could plug the radioactive leak in the reactor vessel with chewing gum.

Look at the black cloud above that crane right before it moved. That was a massive downshear, enormously powerful. It even moved the monster crane at 1 into view.

I think the mud from the rain made the footing unstable and the downshear made the crane fall. Slowly yes, but it fell (or you could say it “folded” by itself. There were no workers involved.

Look. As bad as this situation is, I don’t think this web site needs to embellish the situation by posting video of a crane, that may be totally innocently undergoing a stowing operation prior to a storm coming, by posting the video as if the storm caused it to happen.
What is the proof? It can easily be a “stowing” process. Why shouldn’t I think that that is what I am seeing?
ENENews is a great site to keep us informed about things you can’t get from any other news source. But it doesn’t need to become a virtual “Weekly World News” that sensationalizes what is already sensational.

Welcome to searching for the truth :)

I’ve been reading this site for a long time, and didn’t really want to post because people panic so much and post all over the place – it IS offputting for people coming for news (I will not make friends saying that but I am not here to make friends necessarily, I am here to try to make sense of what is happening on our planet).

I’ve seen you stop panicking, which is a good thing, me too (hence my chosen name). Stay, if you are so inclined, and post information you find.

The people who keep telling us how doomed we are etc might well be right, but my instinct is that on a global scale we are not immediately all going to develop tumours overnight/acute leukemia/radiation poisoning. However, my thoughts on where there’s proper grounds for sorrow are best expressed by looking at what the Mascot for the Fukushima Tourist holds up as a sign “Pray For Fukushima” written in crayon.

That said, tourism to the area has picked up because people want to find the truth…

Enjoy the rest of your life, however long it may be, and that is one of the wisest statements I’ve seen here :)

It’s kind of sad how selfish people can get without realizing it.. instead of buying a bunch of stuff to stock up on in fear of radiation send some of that money to a trusted charity that goes to the Japanese.. I mean shit, the ‘fukushima 50′ who stayed behind to avoid an even more catastrophic meltdown/explosion, they didn’t have any contact with their families after the tsunami.. they had to work in a suicide environment that they know the dangers of.. knowing they probably will die before they can see their family again.. i couldnt imagine being in that situation. Hero is an understatement. Not to mention all the other workers who have the worst working conditions in the world. They eat radioactive food, they shower in radioactive water.. its horrible and were over here where it’s least concentrated freaking out. but people are people i have my own morals that im proud of. take care staycalm and good…

If cancer rates were 1 in 2 before Fukushima, what will they be 5 years from now. If all nuclear were stopped immediately there might be a chance. But what we see is article after article that the nuclear industry refuses to let any knowledge or accident deter them from installing another 4,00o nuclear power stations in the US alone. In addition, they want nuclear in every home and every car. Uranium in bombs and weapons and even golf clubs, fertilizer, and roads is increasing at an exponential rate. Sitting on the computer being scared isn’t going to help anything. we need demonstrations, protests make everyone aware of the dangers of nuclear energy and then we have a chance. And did u say they’re building 4,000 more nuclear plants in the US? because i really hope that’s a typo. and not because i “dont want to know the truth” it’s because to say we’re building 4000 more plants here doesn’t give you too much credibility..

    Grace that’s revolting!

Look at it this way people. Ranting and raving a “the end is nigh” serves the ends of corporations because it allows them to file everyone under “weed-paranoia conspiracy nutter” (and if that causes offence I am sorry, but the outside world is looking at this page and surely you want them to carry on looking in growing numbers).

There’s already organisations battling against the big corporations, yelling and screaming mainly makes for disinformation. We need facts though – nuclear is not going to go away, if this was say solar v coal then it would be easier to shut down and hand over, but you can’t put out the lights on a nuclear plant and have it go conveniently away. Doublethink to even try to think about it, the problem will still be there for thousands of years.

Given that it is very unlikely that nuclear will go away (much as I personally wish it would) what we need to be campaigning for is not abolishment that won’t come but proper safety controls, proper disposal, safer plants. I actually don’t think nuclear is inherently dangerous but the technology being used is ancient and out of date, so you put that with human stupidity and human greed and… well, we’ve seen a small section of what can happen.

Oppenheimer also was hit by what he had done.

Thing is, if you experiment with something non-lethal and your initial floundering around (i.e. what the nuclear industry has always done, floundered covered up and lied) leaves you with some broken machines and no fatalies to anything but your bank balance, it’s no big thing. Messing up from the start, as has happened with nuclear, has too lethal a consequence. I’m trying and failing to articulate here that in potential if things were ideal and in an ideal world nuclear would be feasible. That isn’t the situation we live with, and money has become the main factor for most of those who have control over the situation.

The clock can’t be turned back, we need to find the way to make those with responsibility live up to those responsibilities.

I’m going to quantify my last statement. I think it is entirely possible to have safe nuclear energy, but unlikely to happen due to the shyster activities you hear about at so many nuclear plants and facilities. Such practices are only an extension of human nature – ever really think about what happens to what you personally flush down the toilet? – in that your profitibility outweighs someone else’s problem. Trouble is, there is too much money at stake in most cases which is why we are where we are now.

@staycalm Not to drop into the tinfoil blogs is a challenge we are facing everyday since this blog was founded. The emotions of the people here vary. But ONE thing unites us here: We are those people who do not want Nuclear Power Plants for the purpose of providing electricity mainly towards the industry, where alternative sources are not even wanted. It was this concept that hindered engineers to develop alternatives. Now as we are facing an elemental accident which never happened before in human history, make sure to find a spaceship to find a planet where they believe in save nuclear energy. We do not believe in this here because too many sacrifices have been done and will be done. So get out of here. And make sure to report our IPs to your master. Peace.

That “get out of here” is keeping a lot of people away from this site, so if you want this resource to simply be a playground for a little group of people to run around ego waving then you’re doing a fine job of helping the planet get fried quicker.

I am not taking your post personally, and I am not going to attack back because there is way too much at stake for that. Mainly, humans being stupid is what caused this all to happen in the first place.
