Nuke query: What if dam breaks?, Omaha World Herald by Nancy Gaarder, June 30, 2011 at 1:30 pm EDT:
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is asking for an explanation of the flooding that would occur should a dam break upstream of two Nebraska nuclear plants it monitors. [...]
On Wednesday, the NRC regional office that oversees Nebraska sent an official request to the corps for its 2009 and 2010 analyses of what would happen if a dam fails. [...]
The dams themselves have had some issues, according to the corps, but nothing that affects their integrity, said John Bertino, head of dam safety for the Omaha district. [...]

Found lots of links to reports for issues around iowas dams…but the issue of infrastructure such as bridges…
http://www.theiowaedict.com/financially-ripped-off/forget-dams-bursting-are-bridges-next/
off that link found this
2009
State-regulated dams: 3289
High hazard potential: 90
Significant hazard potential: 201
Low hazard potential: 2998
State dam safety FTE’s: 2.25
Total Budget: $131,069
http://www.damsafety.org/map/state.aspx?s=15 some of the figures are interesting and this link gives you other historical etc data…
http://www.damsafety.org/media/Documents/STATE_INFO/State%20Performance%20Data/Grant%20Useage/Iowa.pdf helps understand funding maintanence issues surrounding the dams…only four inspectors…only 75 inspections since 2001 (info on this 75 figure seems to be used in different connotations, vague/incorrect use maybe) with 90 high hazard potential sites and 200 with significant hazard potential oh and 3000!! low hazard potential!!! Oh and the bridges etc!! anybody got any other relevant articles/info to go with this??
also, I found on this website
http://geo.usace.army.mil/pgis/f?p=397:12:2416198679135288
a link to the dam management safety tool is busted…shame! Wonder why??? Dam management (cover your asses ) cleanup??
Talking about asses and cleanup, I was trying to find info about Beef/pork Processor Waste Ponds along the Missouri/Mississippi valey/river as I believe this type of farming is quite big over in the usa…are any good links for info on these waste ponds with relevant disaster management reports etc?? many thanks in advance… my geography of the usa is not so good and makes slow going on the research…peace

Saw that story yesterday. It’s a good summary. However, the title is incorrect and would be more accurate if it read:

Dams are build to to hold water even if it passes over the top of it. at least outside of the USA…

Overtopping or overflow of an embankment dam outside of its spillways will cause disastrous flooding through the eventual failure of the dam.

Excerpts from Bernard Shanks, stltoady.com:
“The greatest fear is the massive Fort Peck Dam, a hydraulic-fill dam that is the largest of its kind.
The Fort Peck Dam is built with a flawed design that has suffered a well-known fate for this type of dam — liquefaction — in which saturated soil loses its stability. Hydraulic-fill dams are prone to almost instant collapse from stress or earthquakes. California required all hydraulic-fill dams be torn out or rebuilt — and no other large dams have been built this way since.
At three miles wide…Fort Peck may be the largest at-risk dam in the nation. What if Fort Peck Dam should fail?
Here is a likely scenario: Garrison, Oahe and three other downstream earthen dams would have to catch and hold a massive amount of water, an area covering nearly 250 square miles 100 feet deep. But earthen dams, when overtopped with floodwater, do not stand. They break and erode away, usually within an hour. All are full.
There is a possibility a failure of Fort Peck Dam could lead to a domino-like collapse of all five downstream dams. It probably would wreck every bridge, highway, pipeline and power line and split the heartland of the nation, leaving a gap 1,500 miles wide. Countless sewage treatment plants, toxic waste sites and even Superfund sites would be flushed downstream. The death toll and blow to our economy would be ghastly.”

Mr. Burns: Sooooo Simpson…tell me again why you went along with building the nuclear plant on the river down stream from so many dams.
Homer: Oh…that’s easy Mr. Burns. Those dams are in another state so they’re some one ELSE’S responsibility, not ours. If they break and flood our back up cooling system we get to blame it on THEMMMMMM!
Burns: Ehhhhhhhhxcellent Simpson.
I always knew there was a reason for keeping you around. Now get back to work!

Excellent, indeed. A skullish laugh for me this morning.

St. Louis Post-Dispatch is covering up the fact that there are two Nuclear power plants (Ft. Calhoun and Cooper) surrounded by flood waters and Los Alamos threatened by an out of control wildfire, and removing people who post stories about it in their forum or comments
http://stltoday.com
http://interact.stltoday.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=6
Not only are they covering it up and trying to humiliate me about it, nearly all these cretins think RADIATION is safe and happy and as American as apple pie and torture.
These two power plants are within 6 hours of St. Louis, so surely its newsworthy. Instead they run stories on American Idol.
If you care about the future of the country, we need to realize the media DOES NOT CARE ABOUT US. As this demonstrates, even when there is a massive threat to a specific area they still do not run the truth.

Well, I guess the good news is that very few Americans are going to be effectively curtailed by censorship or threats when their lives are already smack dab well on the line!!…?
(Japan not referenced here!)
Can anyone keep a vast mob from jumping out the door and over the turnstills when someone yells, Fire!? Nope.
I guess we still get to pick our poison!

Thanks for sharing the experience. There is plenty of loony-tunes nonsense when it comes to nuclear, that is for sure. The media certainly does not care about anything but than being the “mouthpiece” of the rulers (who own and control the media, in any case). And it is clear that these rulers are actually quite intent on destablising the country.
Questions for all those who claim “radiation is safe” and are suppressing news/comments about events at nuclear plants on the Missouri River (such as those at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch):
Why the need to suppress and remove comments about events happening with nuclear plants up river (that could result in significant radioactive releases) if radiation is “safe”?
Surely, even if massive amounts of radioactive water flow down river and even if radiation is ingested by millions of people, it won’t matter at all, will it?
So, what are you so disturbed by (or worried about) that you have to remove the comments about these events at the nuclear plants on the Missouri River?

I am pasting below a comment from someone on Prison Planet. I cannot verify the truth of it, but one of the things we do here is throw out possibilities and discuss their validity, so that it for what it is worth:
From:Harold
To:Al Cuppett
Subject: Gavins Point Dam about to be blown.
Hi Al, Harold from Omaha here. Hope all is well.
I just recieved a call from my best freind. He informed me that one of his drivers has a freind who is an Engineer at Gavins Point Dam on the SD/NE line.
The face of Gavins Point Dam is cracking under the preasure of the floodwater buildup and could burst soon.
Military men have just completed the setting of charges on 25% of the face of the dam in preparation to blow it if the dam continues to crack. They are afraid the dam is going to give way and in an effort to save most of it, they have set charges to blow it in an attempt to relieve some of the preasure of the floodwaters.
This will spell catastrophic results for EVERYTHING downriver…..including Omaha’s riverfront and a good portion of downtown.
As you know, ALL photography is banned at the Ft. Calhoun Nuclear Power Plant and a 3 mile “no-fly” zone has been implimented which is roughly 15 miles due north of my house because it’s apparently under water as I write this to you. Last week they are reported to have had a level 4 emergency fire which affected the coolant of the rods but was dealt with quickly and no damage occured at that time. However, if the dam is blown, the results could be Biblical in proportion…
This week, the decision was made by my employer to prepare to lose our shop of over 40 years and move it if the floodwaters come down the street which they very well could do in the next 2-3 weeks but if the dam is blown, we could maybe have 3-4 days notice at best.
Do what you will with this information Al and God Bless the Republic…
Live With Honor,
Harold
Omaha, NE.

I believe the writer of this letter may be the same person who put this same info out on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CYMkZwdFMQ on June 25th.
Since then, he has been set upon by the most vicious “trolls” in a manner that I have never seen before. Whether the info is true or not, I believe he acted out of concern. Many of the denigrating comments that have been posted are obscene. I have never seen anything like it.

I appreciate your response and I believe what you say about trolls is an indicator of truth because the disinfo agents are pointed to leaks to try and discredit them.
I told my family shortly after Fukushima chaos began that I was expecting an event in the US so that down the line, when it becomes obvious that we are suffering effects of radiation, the powers at the top can blame it on our own event and protect their buddies in Japan. Even if we caused Fukushima to punish them (theory only), the world cabal protects political cronies.
