Official detects radiation spike on California beach, now at 500% normal levels — ‘Befuddled’ as to why it’s so high, claims there’s no ‘immediate’ health concern — Public’s interest in Fukushima nuclear waste rising (VIDEO)

Published: January 4th, 2014 at 12:07 am ET

Half Moon Bay Review, Jan. 3, 2014 at 8:21p ET: [San Mateo] County health officials first learned of the radiation levels last week, and they sent their own inspector on Dec. 28 to Pacifica […] the county inspector measured the beach to have a radiation level of about 100 micro-REM per hour [1 microsievert per hour], or about five times the normal amount. […] Although the radiation levels were clearly higher than is typical, [San Mateo County environmental health director Dean Peterson] emphasized that it was still not unsafe for humans. […] Peterson admitted he was “befuddled” as to why radiation levels were higher than normal, but he was skeptical that the Fukushima meltdown could be the cause. He noted that many innocuous items could spike the radiation levels in an area, including red-painted disposable eating utensils. […] Peterson forwarded the matter to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and state Department of Public Health […]

Dean Peterson, San Mateo County environmental health director: “It’s not something that we feel is an immediate public health concern […] We’re not even close to the point of saying that any of this is from Fukushima. […] I honestly think the end result of this is that it’s just higher levels of background radiation.”

The Half Moon Bay Review article provides details on the YouTube video that spurred local officials into action: An amateur video of a Geiger counter showing high radiation levels at a Coastside beach has drawn the attention of local, state and federal public health officials. […] the short video has galvanized public concerns that radioactive material could be landing on the local coastline from Japan as a result of the 2011 meltdown of the Fukushima Daiichi reactors. […] First posted last week on YouTube, the seven-minute video shows the meter of a Geiger counter as an off-camera man measures different spots on the beach south of Pillar Point Harbor. The gadget’s alarm begins ringing as its radiation reading ratchets up to about 150 counts per minute, or roughly five times the typical amount found in the environment. […] In a blog entry, the unidentified poster of the video noted that he has been monitoring local beaches for two years before noticing a sudden rise in radiation levels in recent days. […] In the following days other amateurs with Geiger counters began posting similar videos online. […] “We can’t comment on anybody’s media creation. We really have no way of knowing right now whether it’s valid or not,” said [state Public Health] spokeswoman Wendy Hopkins.

There is some pink haze in the background images in this video, and a nice lens flare that flashed hot pink at right angle to the Sun.(@3:04 & 3:16) Lens flare involves the same light parallax scattering as what happens inside a jewel, Whatever the inclusion is, causes color from bending of light. Pink is a mix of all of the colors (white) and a bit more red. Pink clouds are a red Sun against brilliant white. The pink in the video is under a full overhead sunlight scattering in the atmospheric "inclusion".

I live in Longmont. You can see that the EPA is no longer publishing data:

The high altitude always gets the most radiation. For those who say that there are not ongoing criticalities happening at Fukushima, I just say you don't have to experience the radioactive fallout. Just after the meltdowns and meltthroughs in March, 2011, someone in the SW part of CO in the mountains, I think his name was James Tepkon or something like that, used to publish all the vegetable mutations in his garden and the radiation readings he took.

    • Why didn't they test the SAND?

Hmmm, would that be a NO, because that would start a panic?

Still no confirmation of 500 CPM beach sand reading, despite the 'experts' and government going out to see what is going on.

Sounds like Fukushima… bafflegab, downplay, deny, minimize, and hide for as long as possible.

They should have been the FIRST to measure this. Instead, they are the last, and then do everything they can to talk it away and not confirm the 500 CPM reading.

Are you getting that the government is not there to protect you yet?

This is the playbook and how they do it, every time, every where, in all situations, nuclear accidents, etc…

We have some folks in our group who have the equipment to test the sand.

I think we need to do the science on our own. Maybe our folks with the equipment should contact the man who did the sampling to send some sand samples so people WE trust can test it?

Our governments don't give a crap about any of us,, we need to protect ourselves from THEM.

Wow… complete denial or total ignorance! Red painted disposable utensils… WTF… and this is a public health official? This is what we are dealing with. An ignorant public that isn't even remotely aware of how ignorant they are. Can you imagine the panic that will occur when radiation levels reach a point where there actually is an "immediate and undeniable health concern"? Of course by then it's too late to save your children. By then they are toast. I thought the national debt would be the final straw… now even that problem seems insignificant. This really is the end.

    • imacmill

It is the spectre of full-on, run-away citizen panic that is the reason that the governments of the world will *never* tell us what the situation really is. In the case of Canada and the US, what possible good would it do to tell every human being living on the west coast to evacuate? Where would we go (I live on the west coast of Canada). If the radiation becomes bad enough that we need to leave, then it's bad enough (or soon will be) to affect the entire country.

Seems to me we need to stop bitching about the media's deliberate lack of coverage on this (we know why) and make up our own minds about what to do. If you're in a financial/employment position where you can move away, now is the time to do it; if things do get bad (and I have no idea if they will), then waiting until then would mean any property you own would become worthless. Sell now while the selling is good.

      Just saying'…

The USA begged Japan to "dump" cesium. Was it to cover for all the nasty little classified surprises of our rather uncaring government/corporations have disposed of? The time limit of rust out was 40 years or so. Plan that covered this insanity was at the time to recover it when we had "developed technology" to dispose of it in a safer manner. This wait until next century logic, has effectively dumped their old problems on the new generations of people here today. Hanford has sat there leaking into the Columbia river for 20 years while FEDS screw around wasting "survey grant" money over what to do. And always wind up spending tax money to cover for any discoveries using propaganda.

Same plan applies to the fuel pools at these plutonium producers, let it rot until we "develop new technology" for disposal. Well my bad news in all this "new technology" is Mercury Nevada, 60 miles over the hills shadowing my area, is where in 2014, they plan to, for a disposal fee burry the USA, and other countries nuclear garbage under the SAND! The bright dashing young money grubbers closed Yucca Mountain; then resolved to simply burry their nasty casks like a cat covering turds in its litter box.

Big Brother's little minions in America need more guidance in the art of public persuasion in rejecting the notion that invisible radiation is now present at dangerous levels near humans.

Take heed of the wonderful job the Japanese officials did in discovering that radiation hot spots were caused by buried 50-year old radium bottles left from atomic energy researchers. Those disclosures by officials helped allay the fears of numerous centenarians in Japan and even a couple of citizens under age 100.

Please reveal the brand of the plastic ware so you can answer to the company in libel court. I am sure the health advisors are going to tell everyone the name of those dastardly plastic companies so the public can take preventative action. 🙂

    • Cisco Cisco

Sickputer…yep! OK…what's next from the official deniers? The next ruse will be, and it will be an "good one". The radioactivity now being discovered may be the result of leaks from San Onfre or prior ocean dumping of nuclear waste.

The nucleocrats strategy: Shift to another plausible possible diversionary source or two; and, claim not to worry in the future, because SONGS has been shutdown. And/or, the higher than normal beach radiation counts could be those pesky leaking barrels of nuclear waste dumped off the coast of California decades ago, and recently reported.

Without a independent media, the real story won't be told. BTW…Aljazeera is premiering a 4 night/part mini-doc/report starting Monday, December 6…."Return to Fukushima with America Tonight"

Yes sad, the beaches of LA are devoid. As we had to fly back several times to UCLA for my cancer treatments, we both noticed no life below on the beach. Back when we used to cruise (gave it up too damaging) Long Beach was alive with the calls of seabirds galore, seals sea lions, etc. everywhere. Now just after take off from LAX one sees nothing on the beach. What was once crowded with life is devoid now.

We used to be woken up every morning by birds, but now we can sleep in late. I was so happy a few months ago when I saw a hummingbird, and again when I saw a worm after the rain. The SF Bay Area used to be flooded with hummingbirds seasonally, and with worms on the sidewalks after the rains, but in 2013, I only saw one of each.

        • Ontological Ontological

My wife has been feeding what is left of the birds here. Used to be desert doves all over, now it's a family of mocking birds, a family of humming birds, and several other smaller birds. They trust us, and stay all year because we have been feeding them since the corexit use in the gulf spill. Keeping them from migrating, and having them winter here in the shadows of the Spring Mountains, has preserved their ability to breed.
Sage and rosemary around the house used to be full of honey bees, now 3 or 4 buzz among the lovely purple flowers. I think the hummers are the new pollinators.

          • AllenH AllenH

We have some kind of Ivy plant that grows flowers and then the bees came in their thousands. In 2012 and 2011 it was so loud you could easily hear them sitting in your apartment, this plant wraps around the 5 story building. This year: Nothing !!!

            • Ontological Ontological

Sounds like it was nice, poor lil bees. Millions of bees fled their homes due to corexit, only to be incinerated by cell phone microwave towers, and now radiation from nuclear scintillations as well as the toxic ELEments themselves. Monsanto's dream(selling robotic mini drone pollinator bots), and our nightmare.

I'm in Minneapolis and yes, I too have notice a great decline in earth worms after it rains. My driveway and the street I live on used to be covered by worms after it rained. Literally hundreds could be found, used to pick up the crawlers if we were going fishing anytime soon. Not anymore. The last two summers my yard has been completely devoid of them after it rains.

It would be interesting to see the bird tallies from the Christmas bird counts that happen all over the country. Every year birders count birds in the same 15 mile radius circles and have been doing this for many many years. I'll do a little looking around and see if I can find any results online.

      • Thanks for the replies.

Yes, where are those bird counts?

      • Very good suggestion. I'm searching and finding that bird life has dramatically died off over the last 40 years.

One example that could be tied to Fukushima can be found in South Dakota. South Dakota had very, very high readings according to Radnet over the summer of 2011 and 2012 because the jet stream moves up north from Colorado over the Dakotas and Minnesota.

South Dakota survey shows large decline in pheasant numbers
Aberdeen area has 55 percent fall off from last year's survey
August 31, 2013|By Bob Mercer, American News Correspondent

PIERRE — Hundreds of thousands of pheasants mysteriously disappeared from eastern and central South Dakota in the past year. Not enough chicks hatched this summer to offset the losses.

The state Game, Fish and Parks Department left many South Dakotans stunned with its declaration of a 64 percent decrease in its annual brood survey, released Friday.

Possible reasons are many. Drought turned severe in August a year ago and didn’t let up in many places until a cold and wet spring this year. There has been continued conversion of farm acres from conservation reserve to crops. That has meant less dense nesting cover and easier meals for predators.

And in many places there seems to be fewer insects this summer, such as crickets and caterpillars that comprise young pheasants’ diets for the first month of life…

The fact they went out of their way to make sure that FUkushima was discounted means just the opposite – they know it's coming from there, cuz there is no other aerosol vector in the airstream.

BTW, readings in Ojai, CA today were 25 to 38 CPM. And normal background radiation in the 1950s were 3 CPM. For decades it was moved up to 12 CPM. After FUCKwhatever, it became 25 CPM.

Singing my Fukushima life with his words
Informing me softly with his song

Killing denial softly, with his songs
Telling the rest of my life with his words
Enlightening me softly with his songs

I heard he sang truth songs

And so I came to see him

To listen to truth for a while
And there he was, this disfigured boy

        A stranger to my eyes

Strumming my pain with a crooked finger

Singing my life with his words
Revealing me softly with his song

Killing me softly, with Nuclear songs
Telling what's left of my life with his words
Killing death softly, with his truth songs

I felt all flushed with Cesium's fever
Embarrassed in the Pro Nuke crowd
I felt he found my Nuclear concerns

And read each one out loud
I prayed that he would finish

This has to be one of the most nonsensical statements I have read about the radiation upsurge:

"He noted that many innocuous items could spike the radiation levels in an area, including red-painted disposable eating utensils."

Well, if they are causing spikes in radiation, then they are not "innocuous" are they, Dimwit? Obviously we need to stop stressing about Fukushima and go after the litterbugs leaving their picnic utensils all over the beach.

This is it, the first frontier of the plume has arrived.

From this day on things will change drastically for the locals, awareness has to be risen.

First, don't expect this to be a spike as radiation levels won't return to pre-Fukushima levels. The levels will increase further due to constant nuclide deposition on the costal area.

Secondly don't trust the officals talking about external radiation doses.
The real threat won't be the elevated background radiation, but the incorporation of radionuclides by breathing, swallowing or seafood ingestion.

Please act responsible, keep yourself informed and share your knockledge, especially those who raise children.

Careful about jumping on this bandwagon too soon. There are some beaches in that area that have natural exposed radioactive bedrock that is eroded by the surf action. There is every chance this is caused by natural radioactivity in certain types of sand that has all been dumped in one spot on a beach such as that.

To cry wolf for something that can be proved is a natural occurrence is exactly what the government is hoping you will do, so they can prove it's natural and then publicly embarrass their enemies.

A suggestion for how someone befuddled could become un-befuddled.

That reading on the beach is sufficient cause for concern that a scientist would think about designing experiments. One could answer questions like – "Is the radiation due to some local phenomenon, or due to something more widespread?" And perhaps also – "Is the radiation due to something new, or has it been that way for some time (decades)?"

Here's an experiment to answer the first question. Initially restrict one's attention to the seacoast of Northern Hemisphere. Take bunches of measurements all along the Pacific coast of North America. Then all along the Atlantic coast of North America. Then along the Gulf of Mexico. Then along the Atlantic coast of Europe. Then along the Pacific coast of Asia. Then repeat for the seacoasts in the southern hemisphere. By any chance, are your measurements high at pretty much all locations around the Northern Pacific, yet nowhere else on the planet?

One way to answer the second question is to seek historical data, where consistent measurements are made. Perhaps someone has a better idea for that.

But if an experiment shows that the problem is widespread across the Northern Pacific, not elsewhere, and is new only within the last few years, then most reasonable people would conclude that they're FUKU-ed. With no befuddlement.

w m Where is the hay stack?

    • Socrates

Absolutely correct. Massive radiation cannot be hidden along the beaches. If ALL beaches show high radiation then it is Fukushima.

I am consulting with experts from all over the United States. Whatever the from reality is, we will get to the bottom of this soon. Are Buckballs here, was something dumped off the coast off of San Francisco, or combinations of both?

The government either does not know or does not want to admit what has happened. I have sources that are avoiding me. That is very disturbing.

My guess is that a number of canisters are corroding and releasing their contents, places like Hanford are unable to contain the waste and the Fukushima nuclides are arriving. It is out – of – control so all they can do is buy time to cover their tracks.

Their worst fear is that their system has promoted this type of behavior. That system made them rich and powerful. Any changes would distemper them. Some might even be brought to justice for mass-genocide. That scares them because to continue their ways will contaminate them, too. This double – bind has them paralyzed. If the grim truth is known, the economy collapses with the food chain.

Hm… has it occurred to anyone that you cannot save the world? I hate to say that being both an optimist and a pessimist. But maybe the world is unfolding as it should. An advanced life form seized control of the levers of technological power only to find that all he could create was death? Maybe herein lies the lesson.

I have lived around many places in this country. In the 50s, Southern California beaches were paradises. Mexican beaches, too. Where black seals swam now surfers sit in black wetsuits waiting for a wave. Don't you see that one dominant species has supplanted another with high tech synthetic everything. Yes, plastic silverware and radiation from any possible source because there are so many possibilities.

I watched the movie Kon Tiki last night remembering as a kid who read that book and also On the Beach. Both spoke to civilizations that extincted themselves. Jared Diamond explains how empires crumble; how the false God's they created fall.

There is so much toxic crap in our throw – away society that we have become throw-aways. I think everyone here knows this. Without due concern for the environment, economies mean nothing. Mother Nature takes her course and the best laid plans of mice and men mean naught. This IS the lesson.

I will still go to Torrey Pines State Beach to photograph nature today. But there is no joy.

    • Ya, let's just not tell anybody and lay down and die. Some of us believe we are conscious co-creators of this reality. Everyone deserves to know about Fukushima. • Socrates

You didn't let me finish because I am showing you the way below, as I have before. See below what path you must take… I have said it before. You must take the profit out of the activity. To "regulate" is impossible the injury – producing mechanism is still profitable. Do you get it? Great legal minds such as our Founders put the jury system into our constitution as the of means of address. Their needs to be a conscience of the community – that would be YOU. Legislators will do nothing because they are bought and sold. Current congressional approval rating is 5%. Obama ' s about 40%. Are they helping you? And what part are you playing. Blogging? Don't criticize what you do 't understand. The task ahead requires leaders and ideas, remedies and justice. Are YOU bringing these people to JUSTICE? Yes or no? If so how?

        • "Their needs to be a conscience of the community" and i agree, that won't be found in our legislative communities… but you never know, high on our lists of those to inform need to be our state representatives, town/city counsels and business Associations. There we may find a few People. With children.

Also, see my request and lament for attorneys below. You can't have justice if the People aren't on board. And don't know.

What does one do first? Boots on.

      To continue…

I spent time in some of the most amazing places. I hate to return because it breaks my heart to be a witness to the environmental devastation. The economy trumps the environment until the real order of things is re-established. Playing with nuclear weapons and nuclear energy is just one of those huge extinction protocols. Technology has opened other mass – extinction protocols. Man never had such power nor has ever been so vulnerable at the same time.

I intend to practice acceptance. It is too late for this civilization, indeed, all civilizations will eventually crumble and collapse of their own weight. We here that GE is going into fracking and abandoning nuclear energy. Fools rush in, of course. So long as those fools can externalize those costs by controlling the lawmakers and politicians this will be a done deal and we are finished. But just maybe the Erin Brockovitz' and the Gerry Spences of this world can once and for all take the profit out of this game.

When you sit on the jury that judges these profiteers, you will be shifting the losses back to those who related the losses: those who profited by this course of conduct. Least we become another Easter Island with a barren landscape and no one left who can even tell the tale.

Probably in tune with much of the thought of the video, but only watched around 15 minutes. I guess I drove most to distraction on the last blogsite I frequented, by my emphasis on Energy.

Yet, what is electricity and what is it powered by? Fuel, sometimes nuclear, the means to energy.
It is part of this reality. So many different kinds of energy and so many different realities.
I like the one I refer to as 'Being'.

      • @Socrates. I believe there are many di-itching to take action. if you care to discuss rallying of the ball see above email.

There is also cyber reality now. Blogging + Boots. Some do both. Really, in all the ways we each can get the rad word out.

Then We will see a rally of the People.

No need to reinvent the wheel. Plenty of groups have been in the trenches for years…, Friends of the Earth, etc…and many state specific groups fighting nuclear.

          Join one. Get active.

          • flatsville

Chemfood, If you wanted to re-invent the wheel for one day and create the nucleus of an active group you could organize street level demomstrations at JapGov consular offices in the US. This would be the worst kind of publicity for Japan given that many people visit those offices for visas and business related purposes. Hold a preeser and present a petition to remediate the mess on the 3rd anniversary.

Easily organized via the web for a one day event. Biggest bang for your digital time.

Above is the list of cities. You got 60+ days. Perfectly doable.

I thought I had young law student who was wavering on his career path, but he found his way back to class.

I see no efforts underway to mark the 3rd in any way.

1:30 pm. thank you socrates, anne, heart, nukelchen, ontological, others i have not named. re activism.. after three mile island i am others were prt of full twelve years of non violent civil disobediance to educate and shut down nukes; and focussed against activities supporting nuclear war mongering. activities included jail time and court witnessing; we helped shut down the lilco power plant on long island ny when it was built…blueprint changes found in the local long island town dump showed deep structural flaws in the construction of cooling system- LILCO just falsified the architectural drawings and threw out the old ones. Which were found This was before shredders! I was an activist for years. Jail time was too damn corrosive, Switched focus to environmental and and occupational safety. Was a 9/11 responder, was there when the towers fell in nyc, i watched them just a mile away in lower manhattan; i helped out with protective equipment for the responders. Now, so much older, with health issues, (my health issues are a direct result of activities protecting worker safety and the environment)how can we be activists, how can we be productive and not totally wear ourselves out?……

        • zogerke zogerke

for one, we need to take good care of our health. for another, we need to name and communicate by any means necessary, facebook, tweeting, blogging, those great tear-off posters someone here has created to point people to enenews. we need stay decently behaving with kindness, so we do not turn into the 'enemies' of life-haters we are trying to alter, so we don't turn into what we are trying to destroy, that is destroying us.
for the big picture, i think how human ancestors have been on this planet for 500 millions years. how it took at least several million years for us- homo sapiens sapiens to evolve. if we are wiped out, if life is wiped out, maybe the next ten million years will see another life form emerge that is radiation resistance (like the primal soup creatures that finally evolved to incorporate & thrive with oxygen instead of 02 being a toxin)…I worry about the children; i grieve for what they will see and experience. the only comfort i feel is that in the big bigbig picture we humans may need to be extinct for any life on this planet to continue and evolve to another point…..what grief.

I thought it was a first rate video. The guy clearly demonstrated the rise and fall of the exposure field. The Inspector clearly does its job as intended, and I'm glad the agencies mentioned above have taken notice.

'Befuddled' haha. Nice to see them trying to switch it up though, I was getting bored with 'baffled'.

  • Re: Wendy Hopkins Public Health spokesperson [California]

    1. "unidentified poster"
The poster of this video can be easily identified.

    2. "amateurs with Geiger counters."
Sounds like a putdown. It's an Inspector Radiation Detector.
He's not a amateur, if he's been doing this for over 2 years and thankfully keeping records too.

    3. "We can't comment…"
No, you CAN comment, but you won't.

    4. "We really have no way of knowing right now…"
Yes YOU do. Liars! Go test it thoroughly. Right NOW!
Hire two independent professionals. Right NOW!

The 'buck' then gets passed to the EPA and they say there is 'no concern', so they aren't going to test.

Round and round we go, where she stops….?
    It's and endless loop. 😉

It would be nice if someone could identify the Radioactive isotopes involved.

I.E. Testing using a scintillator counter(Large crystal coupled photodector in a light sealed/shielded environment). Where measuring the resulting photon energy emitted by crystal gives an indication of the Energy level of radiation that struck the crystal. The pattern of photon energy's determines which Radioactive Isotopes are involved and at what concentration.

    • Ontological Ontological

The days of atomic frequency detection, and true source detection in a portable unit is soon. They already have "examiners" that identify the isotopic materials. 50 grand is a tad pricey for me however.

      • tbg

Here is one for 6K, even has options for USB and Bluetooth. It can find several of the main "talking point isotopes", as I like to call them, plutonium, iodine, cesium.

I have also been wondering if there isn't some way to make an isotope detector on the cheap, like using old surplus from ebay or something, I see lots of old Gamma tubes and military Pu detectors and such.

Seems like if someone could positively identify Pu or Cs or something from fukushima in WA or CA or OR that might wake a lot more people up. Geigers are good but I know the cpms are up here, we need more precise data and isotope identification and the man aint sharing.

I worked for San Mateo County as a programmer for twelve years. The most God awful incompetent place you will ever see. Proof it is true what they say about civil service workers.

When I crossed the California state line, it was like a jail break.

Went to the Florida gulf. But BP was soon on my trail to destroy the Gulf.

This is not confirmation of anything.

The County couldn't confirm a water faucet leak without holding a week of county commission hearings and further study.
