Kyodo: ‘Massive’ amount of Fukushima data wrong? “Figures can’t be trusted” — NHK: Strontium-90 by ocean at 160,000 times limit — Tepco: Actual levels “exceeded the upper limit of measurement… We are very sorry”

Kyodo, Feb. 7, 2014: TEPCO to review “massive” radiation data due to improper measurement — [TEPCO] said Friday that it will review a “massive” amount of radiation data it has collected at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant because readings may be lower than actual figures due to improper measurement. “We are very sorry, but we found cases in which beta radiation readings turned out to be wrong when the radioactivity concentration of a sample was high,” TEPCO spokesman Masayuki Ono told a press conference. […]

Kyodo/Jiji, Feb. 7, 2014: [TEPCO] said it will re-analyze past water samples because some of the figures can’t be trusted.

NHK, Feb. 7, 2014: TEPCO to review eroneous [sic] radiation data — The operator of the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant has decided to review radiation data after finding the initial readings may be much lower than actual figures. [TEPCO] says it has detected a record high 5 million becquerels per liter of radioactive strontium in groundwater collected last July from one of wells close to the ocean. That’s more than 160,000 times the state standard for radioactive wastewater normally released into the sea. […]

Yomiuri Shinbun translated by EXSKF, Feb. 7, 2014: […] 5 million Bq/Liter of radioactive strontium was detected from the groundwater sample taken on June 5 […] about 1,000 times that of the highest density in the groundwater that had been measured so far (5,100 Bq/L). TEPCO didn’t disclose the result of measurement of strontium […] On February 6, TEPCO explained that they had “underestimated all of the results of high-density all-beta, which [in fact] exceeded the upper limit of measurement.” […] The company recently switched to a different method of analysis that uses diluted samples […]

Jiji Press, Feb. 7, 2014: TEPCO May Have Underestimated Radioactive Water Spill Impact […] Nuclear Regulation Authority may have to revise its provisional assessment of the spill [from a tank in summer last year], now put at Level 3 on the International Nuclear Event Scale of zero to 7, if the actual amount is far larger than has been announced, an official of the NRA Secretariat said. TEPCO’s measurement method is considered unreliable, the official added. […]

Yes, the beta particle flux density is so great that when they hit the bare metal walls of the water tanks (they did not think about polymer coatings, but TEPCO would not have paid for it anyway because it would have cost more money), everyone in the neighborhood is getting a full body CT scan with about .025 Angstrom wavelength X-rays. Part-time contractors are getting the same as the full-time employees – cheapskate TEPCO to their credit has found a way to give the same employee benefit to every contractor and employee.

But look at the bright side – fish will soon be so radioactive with Sr-90 you can use them for indoor lighting – no electricity needed for indoor lighting, far better than LED lights. Self cooking – and no more spoilage expiration date for fish – just as fresh as the day you caught or bought them for about 300 years. Put a few kilograms together on your dining table and the beta particle flux should be strong enough to roast marshmallows for those family get-togethers your family will always treasure. Just be sure to wear leaded-glass goggles to avoid cataracts from the betas.

It seems that at this point South Park should do a show about Fukushima. Can you imagine how Kenny will die at Fukushima? Surely the radioactive rats will get him… again. Or does he fall into one of those wells and come out as a vapor? Or he gets run over by a remote controlled robot.

The kids will say "They killed Kenny. You bastards!" through those fuku hazmat suits!

I would also suggest bulk seeds for sprouting . You can do indoors too .
I would also get involved with some heirloom seed banks to get seed that is not yet affected NOW
Seed will be the first thing to go and can be used for barter .
Learn to save your own seed and store it .
Seed can last for many years if stored properly . Spinach for instance has an 8 year viability .
Ot topic but will be spending time on this type of thing in the appropriate forum in the near future .

provisional assessment of the spill [from a tank in summer last year], now put at Level 3 on the International Nuclear Event Scale?
So you are telling me that the increase in ground water concentrations we have seen since last summer is solely due to this one 300 tonnes tank that leaked and you want to empty all the tanks into ocean and everything will be okay, am I missing something or are you.

    • RonM RonM

I thought I clarified this in an earlier comment, the Fukushima Disaster is an 11 on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the worst.

If the Nuclear Fuel Rods in Reactor #4 can be relocated successfully and the Frozen seawall containment is completed expeditiously and actually works to eliminate radioactive run-off into the Pacific then the disaster rating can be re-calibrated down to a 10 on the 1-10 scale with 10 being the worst.

Unfortunately if there is a severe earthquake or other event that compromises the main control rod storage pool then the disaster will increase to a 12 on the 1 -10 scale with 10 being the worst.

      Got It?

    • Sickputer

Ha ha weeman… The tanks are like mild radioactive Koolaid compared to the hundreds if sludge tanks from the Kurion filtering. So if those babies rust out then the figures are 1,000 times the "mild" stored water.

And where does the Kurion sludge come from? Filtering cooling water that has passed over core splatters and melted fuel rods. I wonder if they even filtering anything now. Probably not at Units 1-3 because the ground sites are too hazardous to even walk there on the sea side. The whole place is in the verge of evacuation and total annihilation for central Japan… and beyond.

Forget theorizing Chinese plants or Hanford are exacerbating the current problem. That's million year hot fuel leaving Fukushima Daiichi and it just takes one big megaplex commercial power plant to fatally change the environment forever for carbon-based lifeforms. We Lost Our World at Fukushima Beach.

      • weeman

@sickputer, do you know how they collect sludge, I thought it would be to radioactive to handle?, I was under the impression that the filters in the unit would be cleaned by back washing and collecting the residue, through bypass? Don't know.
I would have thought the only time you would open filter system would be to change filters, how I don't know?
So one cool aid tank is responsible for current upswing in ground water, do you believe, I am going to take that with a pinch of iodine salt.
Be well and hold your head high.
I doubt that the filter system has been working for a long time? Should have had triple redundancy by this time, three filter systems.

If they don't test for it, they can't say they found anything. The EPA or FDA or NOAA or whatever alphabet soup agency tests constantly for industrial poisons to protect us from ourselves.

Normal reasoning would include the EPA testing lakes, air and soils with NOAA testing seawater and the FDA testing foods. Then all get together and compare notes and try to make sense out of each others findings and issue warnings or an advisement.

Shelter indoors? Avoid milks for a certain period? Eat shellfish at your own risk? For abundant caution, keep kids out of the rain and snow until a plume passes to avoid possible health complications. None of those seem to outrageous after a nuke plant blows up and you are downwind.

    • So sad, but that won't happen. The head of GMO foods is in charge at the FDA.. no worries about food safety.. GMO and radiation is GOOD for you.

The NRC has pro nuclear loyalists from the nuclear industry revolving door stationed inside to protect the nuclear industry from the public.

The EPA, same thing.. monitors were turned off when the worst radiation hit.

The politicians are 'owned' by corporations, via tidal waves of money washing over them from monopolies such as the nuclear industry.

WHO at the United Nations is 'owned' by IAEA, a marketing arm of the nuclear industry.

Mass media is nothing more than pro corporate 'programming' with nary a word spoken against the monopolies who are totally in control.

ON THE BRIGHT SIDE: Ch'an masters (or wannabees) now have a new subject for meditation on impurity: Find a morally dead corporate corpse, with a disgusting appearance. (Tepco and Fukushima power plants)

The Idolization of Enlightenment: On the Mummification of Ch'an Masters in Medieval China
            by Robert H. Sharf

"[…]The meditations on impurity involve locating an abandoned corpse by the roadside or in a charnel ground, taking a position nearby, and contemplating the inherent repulsiveness of the body. The Buddhist scriptures enumerate ten meditations on impurity, distinguished according to the relative stage of decomposition of the corpse at hand, be it bloated, livid, festering, cut up, gnawed, scattered, hacked, bleeding, worm-infested, or skeletal.[…]"

If we can get some ch'an masters to meditate on Fukushima and Tepco, their impurity will jump out of their bodies with such force that it might blow the leaking reactors into outer space. If they meditate in the basement, that is.

Tokyo Electric Admits Most Radiation Readings May Be Wrong
    February 8th, 2014 Fukushima – SimplyInfo

Tokyo Electric has admitted a large number of Tokyo Electric radiation readings taken since 2011 may be wrong and much lower than reality.
An audit will be performed on old data from 2011 until October 2013. Tokyo Electric explanation is that high radiation samples had a “counting miss” where the total level of radiation in the sample is NOT accurately recorded. Some media reports questioned Tokyo Electric excuse.

Currently this is only calling into question all beta radiation readings taken. Neither Nuclear Regulation Authority or Tokyo Electric has mentioned similar problems with gamma readings but there have been other issues with measuring and laboratory processes since Nuclear Regulation Authority took over review of the Fukushima plant.

Some of the earliest beta radiation readings were taken when workers entered standing water in the unit 3 turbine building and received beta burns. The workers were NOT informed of the high radiation levels in the water before being sent in for the work. The workers have since sued Tokyo Electric for the workers’ injuries. Tokyo Electric incorrect readings would also impact estimates made of leaks to the sea from damaged tanks in 2013.
