High level of strontium found at Fukushima plant, Kyodo, June 13, 2011:

Radioactive strontium up to 240 times the legal concentration limit has been detected in seawater samples collected near an intake at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Sunday.

The utility said the substance was also found in groundwater near the plant’s Nos. 1 and 2 reactors. The government’s Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency said it is the first time that the substance has been found in groundwater. […]

    In ground water or seawater the “traces” of strontium at 240 times the limit this is not. Seawater can become ground water; seawater evaporates and becomes clouds …do they get it yet?

      A question comes up with this situation.

      Does H20, when evaporated, carry any other component with it?

      Distillation comes to mind, so I am wondering if anyone else has an idea about such.

      Just a thought.

        Not unless the water you’re evaporating has substances in it with a lower vapor pressure or boiling point than water. Distilling alcohol from water comes to mind. 🙂

          Other components can also evaporate, without question, but that does not mean that they are “attached” to the water molecule.

          I doubt that a radioactive isotope will evaporate as water does, nor will it attach itself to a water molecule.

          Only way, as I see it, to get a heavy isotope injected into the atmosphere from a water source would be to thrust it, say a hurricane would work (typhoon).

        ZP, Manifest, & others, I found this information. TMI put this out in 1989. Are there any concerns about a tritium component in this water?

        The federal Atomic Safety and Licensing Board has given the operator of Three Mile Island permission to evaporate 2.3 million gallons of radioactive water into the atmosphere, a decision two anti-nuclear groups say they will appeal.

        “We are convinced that implementation of applicant’s proposal will have extremely small radiation-exposure consequences, both to workers and the general public,” the three-member board said in its order.

        Bedell said the effect of boiling away the water would have a “minuscule” effect on the health of nearby residents.

        “It’s as close to zero as language can reach,” he said.

          Even with a pond, it could take up to 10 years before the radioactivity would decay enough for the material to be handled, Morse said. Building a storage pond “buys you time,” he said.

          But other experts sharply disagree, saying exposing the material to open air could allow radioactive iodine and other volatile substances to blow off the site, adding to the remote contamination that is already spreading dozens of miles from the plant.

          A factor that could vastly complicate the problem is the presence of tritium, or heavy water, which is produced during fission. Tritium cannot be filtered out of water, instead requiring an extremely expensive treatment process.

          “If the contaminated water has relatively high tritium or tritiated water concentration, then treatment could be more complicated,” said Joonhong Ahn, a nuclear waste expert at UC Berkeley.

          Nuclear power plants normally have systems in place to treat tritium on site. But the condition and capacity of the Fukushima system is not known.

    NHK: Excessive levels of strontium detected in seawater

    Tokyo Electric Power Company, or TEPCO, reported that strontinum-90, at a level 53 times higher than the safety standard was detected in samples taken from inside an inlet used exclusively by the nuclear plant, on May 16.

    TEPCO also said that strontinum-90 was detected at a level 170 times higher than the standard in samples also taken on May 16, near the water intakes outside reactor number 2. At the reactor number 3 water intakes, the level was 240 times higher than the legal safety limit.

    Apparently TEPCO has actually done multiple sampling at different locations….good.

    Ah, Strontium-90, my least favorite fission product. Probably found where ever Cesium-137 is found. Bioaccumulates in the bone. Generally unhealthy in any quantity, especially in the young and growing. There needs to be an internationally run, independent survey of the contamination coming from N Japan.

    Dr. Ilya Perlingieri recommends we garden indoors this year, to avoid as much radiation contamination as possible. Another alternative is to dome garden. She also mentions several foods and supplements to lessen the impact of radiation exposure.

      • I find she’s slightly off on her info, plus she misses out zeolite, bentonite, gingko biloba and other things.

        E.g. “Six reactors at Fukushima Daiichi #1 Plant are in danger of catastrophic meltdown. ”

        In fact, 3 reactors are in melt-through (worse than meltdown). Two are in cold shutdown? (5 & 6) but with lingering questions.

        The fourth, #4, is the one we’re waiting for – incessant steaming viewed from the live camera – and guaranteed to kill the world several times over.

        Not quite correct because there is, ostensibly, no core there, just the deadly fuel rods. It’s the fuel rods that will be catastrophic.

        And, #4 is smoking/steaming and nobody seems to know why.

          erm….. I think you’ll find the still ‘hot’ core of R4 (only 7 months mileage) was placed there during the shutdown. Thus the heat issue.
